We needed a show like this
PardonTheTruth3 October 2022
East New York is off to a solid start. There's a very strong NYPD Blue and Hill Street Blues vibe to it. I grew up in a neighborhood a lot like this one and the realism is palpable. Poor people doing what they can to get by, grinning politicos whose only objective is lining their pockets, etc... But this show is not in any way a downer. It presents a group of flawed characters who all bring substantial baggage to the table. The reliable Jimmy Smits and Amanda Warren are perfect in major roles. Old pro Richard Kind plays the usual idiosyncratic character that always fits him like a glove. Let's hope it's not a flash in the pan.

Disregard the bad reviews
nasimzhosein-695-7947487 November 2022
It's another cop show but this time it has some character and realistic story in the episodes. It's so nice to see a female lead as the commander and how she portrays herself is admirable: respectful, firm and fair. Unlike the other cop show FBI where the female lead is disrespectful, rude and obnoxious in the show but i do think that's her normal characteristics.

This show is worth watching good acting, good script and engaging.

Can't understand why I need to write 600 characters to review a show.

So I will have to repeat myself, good show watch it if you like cops show. Very realistic about the drama police persons face on a daily basis.

I like it and I'm going to keep watching every week!
freddy_at_home9 October 2022
I tuned in for the first episode without knowing much about this. I like shows like Chicago PD and Chicago Justice (so sad it got canceled) and Blue Bloods, even if it's a bit cheezy with all the saints stuff.

Anyways, this show seems to off to a god start. Fun seeing Jimmy Smiths back on the screen. He's good! And Richard Kind, he is just funny no matter what he is in. Love that guy. But just to be honest herem I wish cops would stop running around in "high heals" shoes. It's just plain dumb. Come on.

And it's all a bit Gangsters Paradise (Coolio) But now a days it's not easy to watch anything good on TV. So this actually is kind of a start of a new week treat. Keep em' coming.

And I'll sign off by saying Thank You America for giving us great TV-shows year after year. Greetings from a happy show lover from Norway.

Love it!

It's my modern day, Hill Street Blues! I absolutely adore the show, the characters, the story line! In my humble opinion, it's all that a bag of chips and twelve Snapples to go! It has all the ingredients to be truly worthy of an Emmy Award. The show grabs you from the start and leaves you eagerly waiting for next week's segment. I actually think that if it's fleshed out, it could be great on the big screen as well! Everyone that I have spoken with that has seen the show has it on their must see list as well. It's on the list of my top cop shows, including Blue Bloods and Chicago P. D. in short, it's a qualified winner! Please see it and you will also become an ENY Addict as well!

It's Good

I love cop shows. Been watching them a long time. I'm particularly fond of Chicago PD right now. But East New York is kind of different. In a good way. I really like Amanda Warren in this role. And Jimmy Smits is always great. Olivia Luccardi and Ruben Santiago are standouts as well. It's fast paced but also takes time with the characters. It has the usual 2 to 3 situations the officers are dealing with per episode. It's got a good vibe to it. I hope the writers stay true to the storylines and characters. I'm impressed so far. Give it a shot. Looking forward to episode 3. Go East New York!!!!!

good network police drama
SnoopyStyle10 May 2023
Black deputy Inspector Regina Haywood (Amanda Warren) gets promoted to be the new leader of NYPD's 74th precinct in East New York, Brooklyn. She has some new ideas and intends to implement them despite resistance from the old guard. Assistant Chief John Suarez (Jimmy Smits) is her protective superior. Captain Stan Yenko (Richard Kind) becomes her executive officer. Officer Marvin Sandeford is the skeptical veteran as he mentors new recruit Officer Andre Bentley. Brandy Quinlan is the young officer eager to change the system. Detectives Tommy Killian and Crystal Morales are detective partners.

This is a solid police drama. It has a reliable veteran like Jimmy Smits. The cast looks great. I would dial back some of the progressive politics early on and add more of the political corruption. It's a really good show. In years past, it would be given time to build an audience, but that's not the world today. This show has no connections to other shows and no cross promotion possibilities. CBS cancels this after one season.

Amanda Warren shines
maryhei3 October 2022
I'm a senior citizen, and I really appreciated the mature characters in the show.... It has the makings of a great show..... It has intelligent dialogue, interesting plot lines, and characters the viewer actually cares about.....

That being said, the dialogue doesn't clearly reflect the storyline.... It required the viewer to painstakingly follow every word or you may not understand the ending.....which I didn't. For example, I had to go back a view times to understand the conclusions of the crime.....

Again, needs work to make storyline and hence, ending, less muddled. Glad to see that it didn't descend into a soap opera drama as so many crime dramas do.

Just another cop show
drjgardner27 April 2023
There's not much new to see here. If you like cop shows you'll like this one. There's a nice mix of patrol v detective v supervisor v admin, which can be seen in most cop shows for the past few decades. They also use the newbie v veteran contrasts. The acting is uniformly good at every level, and the guest stars also do a good job.

What I like most about the series are the shots of East New York. These are done well, help add to the story, but don't overwhelm you. If there's any way this series stands out a lot from others it's in this area.

Another way it's a little different is the diversity. The area chief is Hispanic and the precinct chief is a Black woman. Contrast that with Blue Bloods which is white bread on white or Chicago PD which has a mere sprinkling of Black and Hispanic.

Character driven
robtatters25 October 2022
Thankfully not your usual procedural!

The acting is good. Refreshing approach that doesn't follow the tired procedural storyline franchises. Character driven story lines are engaging and allow for many possibilities in the future. I've only watched three episodes so far and each one has started developing characters. The idea of a policeman living in the crime ridden area to connect with the people is interesting. The premise of the story at this stage is to restore some peace to the area. However the new police chief and the characters of the various beat cops and detectives is also a focus.

FORMULAIC BUT DECENT
anoran10828 April 2023
Regina Hayward is solid as the lead actor in the series. HOWEVER, the writing (especially the dialogue) is so formulaic and predictable. The support cast ranges from decent acting to lame. I tuned in because I'm a huge Jimmy Smits fan but he is wasted in the show. He makes brief appearances to dispense pithy advice and lame "atta boy" remarks. It's all been done better on other shows from the wide-eyed rookie, to the cynical detectives to hardened activists fighting for justice. This is like a watered down version of version of Blue Bloods with a more diverse cast. I'll keep watching and hope it improves!

Pretty good
danjarnutowski4 October 2022
Not without flaws but I felt some solid emotions out pilot. Nice diverse cast. So far i like all the characters which is rare. A cop show that just feels different in a good way. Hopefully it does well. I like the cop deputy/chief/I'm not sure if I got the title right. She's tough but shows emotional consideration. And just has a personality i don't see that often. I can see this show going places if it paces well and avoids predicatability. I'm curious about where the characters will go. The pilot has set up a lot so it will be interesting how they unfold going forward. I'll be watching and seeing if it meets up.

I am not sure who this show is aimed at, Teenagers?
mjones41-826-63073629 March 2023
The production values are good, the cast is good, the direction is good, the acting is good. BUT the dialogue and the storylines are really cliche. I guess it doesn't try to take itself too seriously because there are some intentional light hearted moments. I expect a lot more from a modern police drama, but perhaps I'm just too old for this show. Maybe it's made for teenagers or young adults, it's really hard to tell who the target audience is. I had to stop watching after 2 episodes because it really felt like my IQ was declining as I watched. I am sorry to give it such a low score, some of the elements of the story line which include ideas to improve community policing seemed good, but that was about it.

Horrible wokeness gone crazy
howardbelcher18 November 2022
I love police procedural shows, and I like some of the actors in this show. I had high hopes that this would be the new Hill Street Blues, but it is not that.

It seems that unless you are a minority in some way, you are the bad person in this show. Sorry, that's a fair tale. I don't think that minorities should be the bad people in the show, but this is nuts and makes it hard to watch.

Personally, I would love to just find a police show that doesn't have all the garbage drama. Get rid of the love stories, the nonsense that has nothing to do with policing or criminal investigation. Give us a pure police procedural like many of the good shows from the past, or the great UK police procedural (again, from the past for the most part).

I mean Jimmi Smitts gone? WHAT THE HELL!

I really looked forward to each episode. Please someone renew it! Renew it like the did Magnum P I. They renewed Queen Latifah show, why not East New York-a much superior show with great stories and great acting all around. All the episodes had great storylines and each character had great strength in their role. PLEASE RENEW THIS SHOW SOMEBODY!

This show is pretty good!
Advocate126 October 2022
I normally don't go for the fake crime shows, but this one is good. The cast is great. Amanda Warren is a great lead. The writers are good because this show will give you some punchlines. Whether it's one cop saying you've mastered the art of the filibuster, a priest saying be careful cherry picking scripture, or another cop asking someone if they are still part of the veteran felons of America, this show will make you laugh.

The show is strikingly real as I know first hand what another minority female police chief experienced, and this show does a great job of showing that side as well.

You will want a season 2 of this season. Can't wait.

I like the show but...
roclife-2719629 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While I like the show the lead character and a few of the supporting cast, it is a cop show at the end of the day. The location I love East New York being a native New Yorker. The action sequences are very good but when it slows down it really slows down. Some of the separate lives of the supporting characters becomes a bit boring. Get back to the Lead character and her love affair with the undercover agent. It's more interesting and when they focus so much on the supporting cast with the bar and the young man who was shot it looses my interest. It's not strong enough to caring a whole episode then we finally get back to the lead characters love affair at the end. It's just not written well enough that the supporting characters can carry an entire episode. I like it but...

Best cop show I have seen in a while
pastor_benje9 March 2023
The storylines are interesting, the characters are worth learning about. I haven't seen a show in a long time where I actually cared about the characters. I've watched Chicago PD quite a bit and I like it, but this is more "human." I find the personalities and the storylines believable, and nobody is a superhero. It is not the classic, "great cops and really corrupt cops" type show. It's just people. Some of the reviews say there is too much racial content, but I think it is handled very well. Realistic and not sanctimonious. The politics are shown in a balanced way as well. Really, just great television.

Too good to be true. And unfortunately it was.
janoffpeter3 October 2023
This show has it all. It has a far bit of grit and some grime to go with it. It's got the necessary components and acting that usually are included in shows such as Law and Order and the old classic Hill Street Blues. There are a few iconic actors and formulaic characters played by the fabulous bases-loaded veteran Jimmy Smits, street wise character actor Ruben Santiago-Hudson and the iconic Richard Kind who plays the lovable precinct savant. Those three basically keep this thing afloat. Then we have a couple of newly established mainstream stars such as Darien Sill-Evans (typecasted) and the leading lady Amanda Warren pretty ho hum and "too beautiful" to be chief. Personally I enjoy the fresh faced rookie played by the young Olivia Luccardi. Episodes 1-8 or 9 I was thinking this is just too good to be true. A solid binge series! But as we all know when something seems too good to be true it generally is. After episode 9 this morphs into a jungle of cliches and the formulaic aspects advance and it become overwhelming. It's now cheesy, boring, and romantically bludgeoned . It's not believable not that being realistic was ever a pre-requisite but if you are looking forward to the next episode before the present episode ends and then all of a sudden the momentum drops off of a cliff and the series becomes a soap opera. Well, you know it was too good to be true. The show starts off like "Hill Street" but dissolves into something more like "Power".

Great Potential
BertS-MN23 October 2022
Starts off good: good cast, interesting circumstances, a lot of options, East New York can go anywhere.

After 3 episodes it looks like we know who the main characters are going to be, and they look promising. I don't know anyone except Jimmy Schmitts, but the others look like they can handle themselves.

I hope they continue to have good writing/plots and good actors in episode roles. We could use a good police show that has more range than murder after murder.

If they don't screw this up, this has potential to be very good or maybe even great. I doubt it can be as good as NYPD Blue or Wired (my 2 favorites), but one can hope.

Descent entertainment, but the story is rushed through
Sandmanreviews1 October 2023
This cop show takes place in East New York. A deprived neighborhood in Brooklyn. The series begin when Regina Haywood steps into the police office of 74th precinct as a newly recruited commanding officer. She sets the tone for how the police should work. They should build good relationships with the citizens of East New York. She pushes that agenda to the extent so that the police officers are recommended to move into one of the housing projects in the neighbourhood. One young female police officer thinks that's a good idea and moves in to an apartment in a building with only black tenants (she is white). That part of the show is pretty interesting, how the police officer tries to fit in to an environment where she clearly isn't wanted. However, the show isn't build showing complicated cases where the police officers spend hours of trying to figure out who did it. Instead the viewer is offered something that is more similar to Law and Order and all the other TV-shows available late night on TV. In every episode there's a new case (so you won't loose track if you skip an episode). But the way the cases are solved are on the other hand rushed through, and in some cases the police officers draw conclusions that aren't really clear to the viewer. The show isn't based on the idea that there should be an intellectual process of solving a case, it's based on the idea that the case should be solved within 40 minutes and therefore the logic of the story has to be sacrificed in order to make it in time. The only reason I continued to watch this show was because it was on HBO, which means no annoying commercials. But I could just as well had watched Law and Order or CSI. This show is nowhere near as great as police shows like Bosch, The Wire or Line of Duty. I have read some of the reviews saying that this show is character driven. Not really. The characters are mostly pretty cliche. You have seen similar characters in plenty of other police shows. You don't get to know anything private about the characters. There isn't time for that, because a case has to be solved within 40 minutes.

If I could give this show a minus 1 I would
iambenee18 October 2022
Complete garbage. Too whimsical. Unrealistic. Not a good option. This is more of a Disney story. Not even filmed in ENY. Not even indicative of ENY. The writers did not try to capture the essence of ENY. Totally fail. To understand how bad this show is you have to understand that there is New York and then there is East new york. It is a Boro within itself. You do not venture there unless you live there or you know someone who lives there and even then you are taking your chances. It is not a neighborhood to be taken lightly. It is not called the beast for nothing. This could have been a great TV show however because of the lack of the writers to actually know what they're writing about it is, and again I say, a complete fail.

Please Reconsider this Great Show
wonder-1036615 May 2023
What am I missing? East New York is a quality show. It is filmed in a great city, has excellent writers and outstanding actors who work well together.

Amanda Warren and Jimmy Smit are perfect leads. Amanda Warren is new to me and she is an excellent actor. She's powerful and vulnerable, caring but no nonsense. My cousin also loves her. Such an interesting character well played. I loved how she dressed for her birthday party. Outstanding. So different from her uniform.

Additionally, I have loved Jimmy Smit forever. Whenever I hear he's acting, I will add reminders to my phone!! Mr. Smith is an effortless, believable, beautiful actor.

The other East New York cast members ARE memorable. The ensemble works well together and their characters are interesting. Rotten Apple contributors agree!

So CBS, I'm baffled that this show has been cancelled!!

Please, I beg you to reconsider.

Thank you.

Sharon.

Just as Good as Wolf!
Erin5026627 June 2023
I am a crime/law show junkie, especially all of Dick Wolf's offerings. This show is written just as well, has just as interesting as characters and scenarios and I can't believe it hasn't been renewed! Jimmy Smits-what a pleasure to see you on the small screen again! Whatever role you take, you excel as an actor and solidify the cast. Amanda Warren is such a fresh breath and really stands out as a strong independent woman and effective leader. Richard kind is his sunny, engaging, and oh so perfect yet in his role as Captain; wise, someone old school, but more than willing to work with a younger woman and actually support her. Elizabeth Rodriguez and Kevin Rankin do have shades of their compatriots, Marissa Ramirez and Donnie Wahlberg on 'Blue Bloods', but still have plenty of their own talent not to feel as if they are copycat characters. The 'rookies' on the show, Olivia Lucarrdi and Lavel Schley, show excellent potential to becoming strong acting presences. So many police procedure shows are set in Manhattan so it's nice to see another borough being featured and one that has been sadly neglected. The show also shows the tightrope that comes with police versus politics and very realistically. I hope they reconsider renewing for the 2024 season!

Not Biased Political Woke Cop Show
mysafetyemonline16 October 2022
The FBI TV SHOWS are predictable and focus on insulting and misrepresenting GOP as supremicists or crazy gun toting anarchists...show after show. NCIS has become ritualized, where the storyline goes you can predict, down to the minute. CSI at least has interesting science, though improbable, and also predictable down to the minute (write down what time in the show when each obvious plot turn happens, it is the same every episode. Maybe a computer writes them? The soap opera relationships are boring too.

Now East New York is shaping up as top notch, like the very best unbiased cop shows, in the Chicago mix and my favorite Blue Bloods. Let's hope it stays real and keeps the network's liberal bias at bay. Well done!
