'Snow White and Rose Red' is among my favourites of all the fairytales (the most famous deservedly being from the Brothers Grimm, certainly the most familiar to me) even if there are more better known and frequently adapted fairytales. It is a very charming, though somewhat slight, story with two equally charming title characters and the bear has always struck me as very rootable.
It is a story that lends itself well to animation, seen with 'Simsala Grimm' and here in 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater' and it is also a story that should be adapted more (there is also a very good German, live action, version from 1979 just to say). Find this adaptation of the story the better one, and it is not just that it is more faithful in detail and spirit. Also find it to have more heart and the characters a touch more interesting.
Also find 'Snow White and Rose Red' to be one of the better episodes of 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater', or again 'Grimm Fairy Tale Classics' to some, and mostly very good though the series had at this point not yet had an episode without flaws.
There are imperfections here. The music, apart from the theme songs which are lovely, is neither memorable or varied, further having the issue of not being dynamic or fitting with what is going on. Some of the synchronisation is still sloppy.
My biggest complaint though is the dwarf/gnome character, he is incredibly annoying (one of the most annoying characters of the whole series for me) and is not sinister or much of a threat at all. Hate his dialogue too, which comes over as over the top and condescending.
For all those imperfections, the voice acting (excepting the dwarf/gnome character, who may fit but is very hammy and not menacing or funny) is a big improvement over the previous episodes. Can find the voice acting a problem on 'Grimm Masterpiece Theater', either being inconsistent or just not very good, but 'Snow White and Rose Red' is one of the better voiced episodes. The bear and the mother are especially well voiced. The opening titles sequence is charming and evokes nostalgia.
Also find 'Snow White and Rose Red' one of the best animated episodes, the colours are vibrant, the backgrounds detailed and more meticulous than some other episodes of the series and the character designs are some of the series' most expressive especially for the bear. The writing is generally fine, having maturity and entertainment value with enough for both children, without dumbing down or being too juvenile, and adults, without being too complicated. The story is charming and the characters, the dwarf/gnome aside, engage, the bear also being rootable.
To conclude, very good episode and does the story justice on the whole. 8/10
