Anybody that hasn't read 'Bearskin' already should really do so. It is unmistakable Brothers Grimm in style and detail, including a quite dark ending, and not just one of my favourites from them but also among my favourite fairy/folk tale stories. And this is coming from someone who loves their stories and highly appreciates their importance in literature, when it comes to fairy/folk-tales they were among the best.
This series is a very interesting one and well worth watching. It is not a consistent series, with a few components unevenly executed throughout its run and some episodes are better than others, but it does make one get acquainted with Brothers Grimm's work if they haven't already and saw it namely as a fan of animation/anime. It adapts 'Bearskin' quite well, although inevitably there are changes and the ending is understandably not near as dark, or should one more like say grim.
'Bearskin' is not perfect. For me the ending was a little too pat, though it is very understandable as to why it was not the grim one of the original story ('Grimm Masterpiece Theater', or 'Grimm Fairy Tale Classics', though did have a fair share of dark moments).
Did feel that the animation was not too great, pretty flat and rushed-looking this time round, though it may have been the picture quality, and most of the character designs are recycled. The best animated character is the genuinely creepy-looking demon (the devil in the original story, but a demon here). The music has also been better elsewhere outside of the intro, in my opinion the music wasn't really dynamic with what was going on and dates the episode a bit.
On the other hand, the voice acting comes over quite well. The best faring being the narrator, who has one of those "listen to for a while without problem" voices, and the sinister-sounding demon. The dialogue flowed well at least and didn't make me cringe, not award-worthy but that is not something to expect from this series.
Generally the characters are fine. The demon's part is not "massive" but he makes a big impression when he does, while Johann becomes more likeable and rootable as his character matures and evolves after not being as sure about him at first. The story is charming and becomes more engaging as the story progresses.
Concluding, worth watching. 7/10
