The Fantastic Four: First Steps Promo Art Shows Marvel's First Family Using Their Fantastic Powers
Image
With Thunderbolts*/*The New Avengers serving as something of a comeback for Marvel Studios, all eyes are now on The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The characters have better brand recognition than the Thunderbolts, but they're also best known to moviegoers for starring in three consecutive duds.

The odds are already stacked against the reboot as it has to share July with Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, and Smurfs. Excitement among fans does appear to be high, though, and more promo art has surfaced as the promotional tie-ins begin.

This latest wave highlights Marvel's First Family; Mister Fantastic strikes a pose not dissimilar to that classic Chris Samnee comic book cover (he's even making a "4" with his hand), and the Invisible Woman shows off one of her force fields.

The Human Torch, meanwhile, flames on, and thanks to the lines on his suit, looks like a piece of Jack Kirby artwork come to life.

Rihanna Trolls Fans with New Song “Friend of Mine”
Image
Anticipation was high for Rihanna’s first new song in three years, but “Friend of Mine” isn’t quite the comeback that the Navy had been anticipating.

Released today (May 16th) as part of the soundtrack for the upcoming Smurfs movie, in which Rihanna voices Smurfette, “Friend of Mine” features minimal lyrics beyond repeating, “Feel like a friend of mine” multiple times. It also contains only one verse, sung twice, over admittedly catchy Afrobeats-inspired production.

Regardless of whether it has met expectations, “Friend of Mine” is the singer’s first new, original music since 2022’s “Lift Me Up,” a more substantial, tender soundtrack cut from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that paid tribute to the late Chadwick Boseman.

Smurfs is due out on July 18th, and will follow Rihanna’s character, Smurfette, as she leads her fellow Smurfs into the human world to rescue Papa Smurf (voiced by John Goodman) from a band of evil wizards.

Rihanna Returns With Club Banger ‘Friend of Mine’

Rihanna has dropped a new single, “Friend of Mine.” The upbeat, Afrobeats-inspired dance track was written for forthcoming animated movie Smurfs, in which the singer voices Smurfette.

A video for the song sees Rihanna approaching the Smurfs’ village with a giant flower as an umbrella. As she goes inside, it transitions to animation and the small blue creatures dance along to the lively track—with some pretty impressive moves. The club-ready single marks Rihanna’s first new music since 2022’s “Lift Me Up,” recorded for the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever soundtrack.

Adventure Comes Out of the Blue in New Smurfs Trailer
Image
Theaters around the world are about to see blue again. Paramount has released a new trailer for its upcoming live-action/animated Smurfs reboot.

Paramount has heavily leaned its marketing for Smurfs into making sure audiences know that Grammy-winning singer Rihanna is voicing Smurfette in the new movie. This continues in the latest trailer, which spends the first several seconds showing footage of Rihanna in the recording booth. When the trailer officially starts, a lot is going on, with Papa Smurf being taken prisoner, the Smurfs journeying into the live-action world (in what is now an overused trope for this franchise), and the snooterpoots (a Minions-level cute and small creature) making their debut. Check out the new trailer and poster for Smurfs below.

Marshmello Joins ‘Smurfs’ Voice Cast (Exclusive)
Image
Marshmello, the notoriously masked DJ, is lending his voice to Paramount’s upcoming “Smurfs.”

It’s unclear who he’ll be playing in the live-action animated hybrid film, but he joins the starry (and sprawling) lineup of Rihanna as Smurfette, John Goodman as Papa Smurf, as well as James Corden, Nick Offerman, Jp Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña and Kurt Russell.

Chris Miller (“Shrek the Third” and “Puss in Boots”) is directing the “Smurfs” reboot. The story follows Smurfette as she leads her tiny, blue-skinned kin after Papa Smurf is mysteriously taken by evil wizards. It opens in theaters on July 18.

Created by the Belgian comics artist known as Peyo, the Smurfs have been the subject of several feature films over the years, most recently at Sony with 2011’s “The Smurfs.” Despite negative reviews,...

Billboards across the world were lit up with news that the first full Superman trailer will be released this Wednesday, and the video has now been officially released online.

In this "motion poster" for the Dcu reboot, we see the familiar sight of Superman and Krypto together. However, this time, they're watching over Metropolis, and the teaser offers perhaps our best look yet at the fictional city's iconic skyline.

The Man of Tomorrow then takes flight before we get confirmation about the trailer landing on Wednesday.

So far, we've had a teaser trailer, a 5-minute preview, and a featurette for Superman. With that in mind, it will be interesting to see how much more of the story this full trailer reveals, not to mention the type of epic visuals comic book readers are hoping to see on screen.

AMC CEO Adam Aron Dismisses Early 2025 Box Office Slump as Anomaly, Points to Sharp Recovery
Toni Collette, Mark Ruffalo, Robert Pattinson, Steven Yeun, and Naomi Ackie in Mickey 17 (2025)
AMC Entertainment’s first-quarter financial results for 2025 reflect a difficult period for theatrical exhibition, as revenues declined and net losses widened. Despite the numbers, CEO Adam Aron maintained that the performance should not be interpreted as a reflection of waning audience interest in moviegoing, arguing instead that the sluggish box office in the first three months of the year was an isolated event already being corrected by a much stronger second quarter.

The company reported a net loss of $202.1 million for the January through March period, an increase from a $163.5 million loss during the same quarter a year earlier. Revenue fell to $862.5 million, down from $951.4 million in Q1 2024, marking a 9% year-over-year decline. Admissions revenue dropped 11% to $473.5 million, and concessions fell nearly 12% to $283.4 million.

AMC’s earnings per share came in at a loss of 58 cents, a figure in line with analyst forecasts of 59 cents, according to data from FactSet. Shares...

But CEO Adam Aron insisted that “Anyone trying to draw any conclusions about the success or appeal of movie theatres from the results of the first quarter of 2025 is likely to be mistaken, because the industrywide domestic box office in Q1 was in our view a distorting anomaly that has already corrected itself. We continue to believe that moviegoing demand for the balance of 2025 and all of 2026 will show great strength.”

The company saw a net loss of $202 million grow from $163 million in the year-earlier quarter on revenue ahead of Wall Street forecasts at $862 million, down from $951 million.

Eps was in line at negative 59 cents a share, an improvement with more shares outstanding.

“Setting aside those first quarters directly impacted by Covid and its aftermath, the...

Can Summer Set a Post-covid Box Office Record With Help From ‘Superman,’ Marvel and ‘Jurassic World: Rebirth’?
Image
Cinema owner Mark O’Meara was watching the Oscars in his living room when Sean Baker, accepting the best director trophy for “Anora,” made an impassioned plea for global audiences to support their local multiplex.

“I stood up and was jumping up and down. He’s talking about me and independent theaters,” O’Meara remembers telling his wife. Five years after Covid badly bruised the movie business, and two years after the strikes slowed the recovery, O’Meara needed no reminder that the industry remains seriously challenged — a fact that was illuminated during 2025’s glacial box office start. “It was an apprehensive couple of months,” he says.

This was weeks ago, in March, when theater attendance was flatlining and tentpoles like Disney’s “Snow White” and Marvel’s “Captain America: Brave New World” just weren’t inspiring enough trips to the movies. But April’s one-two punch of “A Minecraft Movie...

Smurfs (2025): Release Date, Cast, Plot, and All You Need to Know
Image
The Smurfs are back, but whether that’s a good thing or not, we’re not quite sure. These blue creatures have been a pop culture staple for decades, and now they’re making a comeback in Smurfs, a reboot set for release in 2025. Unlike previous adaptations, however, this one will be a musical, with, perhaps, more surprises along the way.

PG movies are making a box office comeback, even outperforming PG-13 films last year. Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore says they’re becoming a real summer force. And while streaming is always there, filmmakers like Dean Fleischer Camp (Lilo & Stitch) believe nothing beats the magic of a movie theater, especially for kids.

With an all-star cast and an attempt to break down the Smurf mythology, this could either be a delightful trip down memory lane or yet another miss for the franchise. Let’s break it all down, and what we know about the project.

Image
We’ve been waiting to see what some true Hollywood mainstays can do with artificial intelligence in filmmaking, and announced today is a project that has the potential to break through into the mainstream in a big way.

“Poker Face” and “Russian Doll” star Natasha Lyonnne is set to make her feature directorial debut based on a script she co-wrote with “The Oa” and “Another Earth” writer Brit Marling. But what really sets the film apart is that it will be a live-action feature film that will blend with it generative AI animation. Lyonne is also teaming with Jaron Lanier, the futurist, author, VR pioneer, and visual effects artist, on the project to give the film a new look and show what they believe AI can really do.

The film too is about that very gulf between live-action and AI and why even as the technology has improved immensely, audiences...

Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s Broadway Reunion Gets Opening Date
Image
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter's next excellent adventure together has officially set its opening date, though it won't be in the world of Bill & Ted. Their previously announced Broadway rendition of Samuel Beckett's play Waiting for Godot is now set to begin previews at the Hudson Theatre, Broadway's oldest venue, on September 13. The curtain will officially rise on this strictly limited engagement starring the longtime friends on September 28, with dates running through January 4, 2026. Announcements for the full casting and design teams are expected soon.

Directed and produced by the acclaimed Jamie Lloyd, the show is a bit more of a serious affair for the dynamic duo than the most righteous time-travelling, rock-and-roll adventures they've typically embarked on together. Godot is a theatrical touchstone around the world, premiering back in 1953 in French and subsequently being translated into many languages with its leads, Vladimir and Estragon, being played by many talented actors,...

‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ Movie Gets Official Title: ‘The Legend of Aang’
Image
“Avatar”– the master of the four elements and not the blue alien creatures created by James Cameron — graced the main stage at CinemaCon, the annual convention of movie theater owners that’s currently unfolding in Las Vegas.

Well, sorta. Paramount didn’t preview any footage of the film, based on the popular “Avatar: The Last Airbender” television series, though the studio did unveiled the official title: “The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.”

Previously titled “Aang: The Last Airbender,” the film takes place in a world divided into four nations — Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. Benders have the ability to control and manipulate the natural element from their nation, but only the Avatar is the master of all four. Plot details haven’t been revealed but the movie is expected to pick up years after the events of 2005’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” which followed then-...

Patty Maloney Dies: Billy Barty Co-Star, Syd & Marty Krofft & ‘Star Wars Holiday Special’ Actress Was 89
Image
Patty Maloney, an actress whose 30-plus year career included memorable turns on Little House on the Prairie, Syd & Marty Krofft’s Far Out Space Nuts, Buck Rogers in the 25th Century and the Star Wars Holiday Special, has died. Her passing was confirmed via a post on the official Syd & Marty Krofft Facebook page. She was 89.

Maloney stood 3 feet 11 inches and weighed about 60 pounds. Her stature and pantomime stills meant she often worked in costume. And work she did, with memorable roles on some of the most popular TV shows of the ’70s an ’80s.

On her first series, the actress played the furry and funny Honk on the Kroffts’ Far Out Space Nuts, a character who spoke only in horn-like honks. The show was a Saturday morning staple for kids in the ’70s, especially via syndication. She also appeared on 13 episodes of The Krofft Superstar Hour and other of the duo’s shows.

Billie Lourd on Starring With Matt Bomer in ‘Mid-Century Modern’ and Being on Her “Indie Grind”
Image
People often describe the experience of working alongside a group of close-knit collaborators on a film or television show as being like a family. There’s no better way to say it for Billie Lourd regarding her newest credit on Hulu’s Mid-Century Modern.

The comedy reunites the veteran star with her Scream Queens, American Horror Story and American Horror Stories boss Ryan Murphy, who serves as an executive producer of the Max Mutchnick and David Kohan-created series. The latter two TV titans also have a tight connection with Lourd after finding a sweet spot for her on their Will & Grace reboot, playing Fiona, the granddaughter of a character played by her late grandmother, Debbie Reynolds. The legendary actress was a regular on the NBC sitcom as the mother of Debra Messing’s Grace Adler.

But in perhaps the sweetest familial connection, Lourd is the goddaughter of power publicist Simon Halls,...

Animated Sequels Are Back, Led by Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2,’ but Pixar Counters with Original ‘Elio’
Image
It’s another year of high-profile animated sequels, led by Disney’s “Zootopia 2,” DreamWorks’ “The Bad Guys 2,” and Nickelodeon/Paramount’s “The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Square Pants” and the “Smurfs” film.

But there are plenty of attention-grabbing non-sequels in 2025: “Pixar’s sci-fi “Elio,” DreamWorks’ “Dog Man,” and Sony Pictures Classics’ “A Magnificent Life,” Sylvain Chomet’s biopic about French author-filmmaker Marcel Pagnol, and Sony Picture’s “Scarlet,” the latest anime from Mamoru Hosoda (“Belle”). In addition, Netflix delivers another diverse slate: “In Your Dreams,” “KPop Demon Hunters” (with Sony Pictures), Genndy Tartakovsky’s R-rated, 2D “Fixed,” “Lost in Starlight” (the streamer’s first Korean-language animated film), “Plankton: The Movie” (with Nickelodeon), “Pookoo” (with Skydance Animation), and “The Twits” from Roald Dahl.

Additionally, there are three Oscar-qualifying holdovers from 2024: “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” “The Colors Within,” and “The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie.

Why The 2025 Oscars Announcer Sounds So Familiar
Image
It's Hollywood's biggest night! The 2025 Oscars are happening as I type these words and, quite possibly, as you're reading them. The awards are being handed out and all of the expectations, surprises, and great moments that come along with the Academy Awards are unfolding. We've got a full list of Oscar winners for you to check out right here. Conan O'Brien is hosting this year's ceremony, with a number of different presenters taking the stage. But who is the announcer for tonight's event? And why does he sound so familiar?

That voice you're hearing between awards and heading into commercial breaks belongs to none other than Nick Offerman. Many viewers probably know him best as Ron Swanson from the beloved sitcom "Parks and Recreation." His voice is distinct, to say the least, and those who put together the ceremony decided that he would be the right man to help add...
