Utter trash
wsalvatore-544046 June 2019
This movie was just horrible. I have seen some very good indie films, but this one was just not watchable. Bad acting, story, production, everything was just bad except the scenery. 1 sure fire way to see if a film is going to be bad is if the very first review is from the production company that made it and they are too dumb to even attempt to hide it. If they can't event cheat a review correctly the movie itself has no hope.

Very Slow For What It IS....
wandernn1-81-68327416 February 2022
Okay so this is called The Haunting Of Borley Manor now, apparently. The name of the movie was changed in the credits and on Amazon. This movie is slow. Also seemingly based on historic events. The Manor was demolished in 1945 so I guess the Haunting has been over for a very long time.

Really a documentary would have been more interesting I think. 3/10.

So bad it's good. Want a real laugh, read the end credits, best part of the film.

Avoid like the plague!
kjohnson-058341 May 2019
Wasted £5.49 renting in sky, story line diabolical, tells nothing about the real Borley, acting was mediocre at best. I was looking forward to this as an interested in Borley Rectory, wished I handnt wasted my time. Should have read reviews before renting. Watch something else instead, Postman Pat for example.

It's not good
biskwitsbaby27 February 2019
Everything about this film is just bad, i never normally write reviews but having been duped by reviews saying this film is AMAZING! and THE MOST TERRIFYING THING YOU'LL EVER WATCH! I had to warn others not to get too excited like I did and recklessly spent £3.49 renting this on Amazon! Don't waste your money.

Rubbish!

What a shockingly bad film this is! I can only think that the really great reviews are from people involved with making this drivel. It's so so bad, judge for yourselves but don't say you weren't warned.

Nope
Sorry but this is appalling. The title should read "The haunting of anywhere, but Borley Rectory." This was not an account of the rectory, its hauntings or the people who lived there and I should know as one of them was my nan.

One to Avoid
collioure_bee8 March 2019
I am trying to find something positive to say but just can't.

Just about everything in this film is so bad. The acting is dire, with so many feedlines missed and some very wooden and cliched characters appearing.

The apparent scary bits were no more frightening than your average episode of SpongeBob SquarePants and as for the story line.......not sure there was one of any substance.

Plenty of silly and basic errors in sets and "plot" - using the word plot very loosely - all I can say is, the best thing you can do with this film is leave it on the shelf.

This film is so bad, the acting so wooden, I was praying there was actually a real ghost and that it would come and kill me before I had to endure this tedious, tiresome, borefest of a movie !!

Utter rubbish
Extralien28 April 2019
I know the Borley story very well and this film did so very little towards the telling of that story. The acting was awful, nothing seen gave you any idea or impression that you were anywhere in or near the Borley area. From the description I was expecting a film where this lone guy experienced everything the rectory had to offer, but no, the film is severely lacking. This is going to end up stuck on charity shop shelves as they wont even be able to give it away as a free gift.

Microbudget Horror
guy_robbins23 March 2019
Great film for a microbudget horror if you beat that in mind. Lead actor much better than has been portrayed in other reviews, cinematography is good and soundtrack excellent, overall a good watch if your not expecting a Hollywood blockbuster....

Certainly adds another twist to the Borley legend!

A slow burning but valiant effort.
jackstupidjack10 July 2019
This is an ultra low budget affair, so don't expect RADA quality acting, or Hollywood effects or dynamics or you'll be disappointed. This is a well strung together narrative on a tiny budget which is sadly low on chills. The story is well set out, if a little tediously, though not reflecting the Borley myths at all, and the adding of Harry Price to the character list is a little haphazard. The overall production is pleasing enough to pass an hour or so. The period is nicely captured, the setting bucolic enough, though the scares are mild, more of the slow building chiller type, but there are a few reasonable creeps, but if you're a die-hard gore and jump-scare lover, then this film won't be for you. There is enough promise in the overall product to suggest that the production team could well produce something much better in the future should they ever get the funding and recognition to follow up this commendable effort.

Possibly the worst movie of all time
hanoi-rockstar1 April 2019
Awful. Just plain terrible... boring, ultra tacky special effects , could have been really good as the story of borley rectory is really interesting. But this was utter crap. Avoid at all costs ... didn't even finish it as it was that bad .

Deceitful Title

The only good thing about this DVD is the picture on the cover. I bought this from a charity shop for £1.00 . I would like to punch the person who gave it to the charity shop.

Awful film.
gib197010 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Looks like they spent more on the cover to actually dupe you into buying it than the film itself. Wooden acting with no passion. I've seen people more animated when they've got a parking ticket. Thought it was going to be like The Woman In Black from the cover. Utter rubbish. The wife and I started laughing as soon as the nun turned up and took the mick and made up our own lines just to make it the end. Only half way decent thing about it was the soundtrack. How this is on general sale in the supermarket is beyond me. Avoid and save your money and 91 minutes of your life. Arty shots up people's noses don't create a spooky atmosphere. The people behind this shouldn't be even allowed to think of making another film again. Ever.

I'm a bit confused to be honest
maisiegrimes9 March 2019
I'm 60mins into this film and so far it's only consisted of: the main guy, who I've got no idea what his name is, waking up in random places, that nun with alien eyes??? purely horrendous accents, everyone walks weirdly like seriously ? What is going on?

I've given it 1 star for the actors actually turning up on set.

If I could give this less than 1 star I would
hulkspidverine10 March 2019
This is a very poorly made movie. The acting is very amateurish. Camera work and editing equally as bad. It seems the only good reviews for this movie are the ones coming from the cast and crew themselves which I could understand if it was a hidden gem of a movie. It isn't... Don't be duped.

The Haunting of Bore-ley Rectory
Hayden-8605528 May 2020
Utterly terrible, acting was bad, plot was nonexistent, and it just wasn't scary in the slightest. The Nun was more silly than anything else, and apart from a few nice scenery shots there's absolutely nothing redeemable in this snooze-fest.

1/10: Boring and slow

Terrible script , terrible acting , no suspense and a spelling mistake. I'm sure the bones that were found were not cabon dated, they're usually carbon dated.

Appalling
richardwinwood9 August 2019
What seems like a good premise has been tackled in the most appallingly amateurish way imaginable. Perhaps the screenwriter could consider approaching other production companies until they find one that can do the story justice because this one clearly does not. Acting - very poor. Production - makes acting look acceptable. Score - totally forgettable.

An interesting version of Borley
jmb770513 March 2019
It's definitely the best film Steven M. Smith & Jon-Paul Gates have done so far. Nice pacing and the story unfolds well and while it's a microcosm of the Borley story ( I didn't know Maryanne Foyster had an affair with an American soldier) it was educational, so I could see the Borley saga from another perspective.

I see it more as a polished drama though than a genre horror film.

Pretty enjoyable and better-than-expected ghost story
kannibalcorpsegrinder22 October 2020
Sent to stay at the Borley Rectory, a wounded American soldier arrives to perform spy operations for the allies while he heals, but the longer he stays there he becomes convinced of the haunted nature of the building which houses a terrifying paranormal entity and tries to save himself and his friends from its clutches.

This was a pretty satisfying and enjoyable effort. One of the films' better elements is the engaging atmosphere and feel throughout here which manages to get quite a lot to like. The idea of the house being out in the countryside away from everything sets a rather normal and unexpected setup for a haunted house tale yet the sunny nature proves quite adept at hiding the darkness within. The backstory involving the history of the building and how the first world war affected its history causes even more to like here with the reasoning behind the haunting of the building and its ghostly inhabitant trying to get inside his head given plenty of space. As well, there's a lot to enjoy with the generally creepy and chilling ghost interacting with everyone. The few scenes of the ghost appearing and tempting inside the house playing sinister spook-games with him as it creeps up behind him and alerts its presence before disappearing is quite chilling with the demonic visage and creepy look playing a nice part to the hauntings. That these are shown to have a fine psychological impact on him throughout the course of the film and leads to a fine reveal about her fate that's quite heartbreaking which is in tune with the style of ghost story that's on display. These are what holds the film up for the most part. There isn't much to dislike here but it does have a few minor flaws. The main issue is the rather sedate and measured pacing that leaves this one somewhat sluggish at times. As the ghostly nun is only in a select few scenes for brief shock jumps, this strategy results in periods where it can feel rather dull, especially when it continually tries to hammer home what happened to him in the war that caused his condition. The numerous flashbacks are somewhat overdone, making for a somewhat irritating tactic of interrupting the story to focus on somewhat we already know when it could've just used a single all-encompassing version and moved on. The other troubling issue is the odd storyline in the second half that turns the film into a rushed and confused paranormal investigation. The conversation between them at his house which causes him to stay goes on way too long as it then moves into a montage of preparing for the nightly visit. As these include the lengthy conversations about the woman he sees in his dreams and the history behind it all, this segment comes off underwhelming and the complete opposite of what's supposed to occur in these kinds of films. Combined with a low-budget tone and feel that some might be put off by, these are the films' flaws.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Language.

Another poor Borley haunting film
virtuafooty10 April 2019
Another poor Borley film. I'm a huge critic of Andrew Jones' low budget horrors but even his Haunting at the Rectory film had more redeeming features than this, and that didn't even feature a ghost to my memory.

Not sure how anyone can review this 9 or 10 stars unless they were somehow linked to the production.

Production values are poor and it doesn't really make sense or go anywhere.

Maybe one day Blumhouse will produce a decent Borley film.
