“Martha, is there any way I can have more meaningful duties?” Gabriel asks. “I want to guide people; I want to change their lives.”

Martha tells him that “to save a lost soul, you have to find a lost soul.” But for Gabriel, this doesn’t take long. He discovers one in Ansari’s character, while standing one night atop an L.

Joel Edgerton
Joel Edgerton can be seen in the upcoming Train Dreams, which screened at Sundance a few months ago, and Netflix shelled out a massive $16 million for the rights to this elegant slice of early twentieth-century Americana, which could be an awards contender if given the proper build-up. Our Chris Bumbray raved about the film, saying in his review, “It’s the kind of movie that stays with you long after you see it and hopefully will get the kind of build-up it deserves, as it will likely rank among the best films of the year when all is said and done.”

Next, Edgerton has signed on to star in a black comedy with Toni Collette titled Fangs. According to Variety, the film is described as a “thrilling black comedy about privilege, power, and dangerous fantasies.” The film will be helmed by first-time Australian director Lucy McKendrick. Sydney Sweeney Boards Another Video Game Adaptation With Jon M. Chu in the Director's Chair
Image
Split Fiction, one of this year's hottest new video games, is coming to the big screen. Sydney Sweeney is attached to the new project, making it the second video game adaptation she's signed on for in recent weeks. Variety reports that Wicked helmer Jon M. Chu will direct the fantasy-science fiction adventure. The game, which was released in March, follows two authors, Mio Hudson and Zoe Foster, who participate in a test of a new simulation device that allows them to enter their own stories.

A glitch puts Mio and Zoe into the same simulation, and they have to travel through a dangerous blend of Mio's science fiction story with Zoe's fantasy epic before they travel deep into their own psyches to face their buried traumas. Sweeney will play one of the two leads, but it has yet to be decided which one she will play. It's the second video...

Sinners (2025) Review
Image
Sinners is the kind of film that arrives like a thunderclap: audacious, bloody, and brimming with style. Ryan Coogler, reuniting with Michael B. Jordan for their most ambitious collaboration yet, fuses period noir, supernatural horror, and musical fable into a rich, genre-fluid tapestry that’s as intellectually rigorous as it is downright entertaining.

Set in 1930s Mississippi, but filmed with a mischievous modern eye, Sinners follows the return of the Smokestack twins – Smoke and Stack Moore, both played with chameleonic confidence by Jordan – to their racially segregated hometown with a dream: to open a Black-owned juke joint in an abandoned sawmill. Naturally, things don’t go according to plan. The land is cursed, the locals are wary, and, oh yeah… there are vampires. And not the sparkly kind.

What’s most remarkable here isn’t the premise, Coogler has always had a knack for turning the familiar inside out, but the sheer confidence of execution.

Calgary Underground 2025 Review: Eephus, Where Baseball Contains Multitudes
Image
Eephus, Carson Lund’s wonderful ode to small stakes baseball and gruff Americana, needs its odd title explained: The Eephus pitch is a throw that is so unnaturally slow that it confuses the batter. It makes him swing too early, or too late. It works like a curveball, but with no power. It looks like it stops in midair. It stays in the air forever. You get bored watching it hang there. So does the hitter. The Eephus makes him lose track of time. It is a poetically goofy pitch, not used in major league play, more a curious bit of the sports minutiae than a real thing, a conversation to displace the silence while sitting in the dugout waiting to bat. In other...

Eric Dane Reveals Als Diagnosis but Will Still Film 'Euphoria'
Image
Motor neuron disease, better known as Als (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), is a devastating and terminal neurodegenerative disorder for which there is no cure. It's taken the lives of many wonderful people, such as David Niven, Sam Shepard, Ronnie Corbett, Aaron Lazar, Roberta Flack, Kenneth Mitchell, Charles Mingus, John Driskell Hopkins, Stephen Hawking, and Lou Gehrig, whose name has become associated with the disorder. It's a terrifying thing to be diagnosed with, with doctors giving most patients a life expectancy of two or three years (although Hawking famously lived for more than 50 years with it). Today, actor Eric Dane announced his Als diagnosis. "I have been diagnosed with Als,” Dane shared with People, adding:

“I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter. I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to set of Euphoria...

Government Cheese Review: Apple TV+'s Latest Surrealist Dramedy Delivers

Quick LinksGovernment Cheese Strips Down '60s Americana With StyleDavid Oyelowo Leads a Standout CastGovernment Cheese's Weirdest Themes Carry a Universal Message

Though it doesn't get as much attention as other streaming services, Apple TV+ has been at the forefront of prestige streaming content for years with shows like Shrinking, Severence and Silo. Each show is as varied in its narrative as its cast, and all manage to reach audiences through the execution of these ideas. Thankfully, when it comes to its latest series, Government Cheese, Apple has pulled out all the stops to offer audiences one of its most unique surrealist dramadies, yet that reminds audiences that finding oneself and providing for family doesn't have to be a choice.

Government Cheese follows Hampton Chambers (David Oyelowo) after being released from prison in 1969. Though he expected a warm welcome, he instead found that his wife, Astoria (Simone Missick), and sons,...

SXSW Preview + Hot List: Blake Lively, Jenna Ortega, Michelle Obama, Matthew McConaughey & More Coming To Austin
Image
Usually, it’s the films that are loud at the SXSW Film & TV Festival in Austin. This year, however, the parade of personalities in the City of the Violet Crown will be creating plenty of thunder including Blake Lively, Jenna Ortega, Michelle Obama, Disney co-chairman Alan Bergman, Amazon and MGM Studios head Jennifer Salke, Sen. Elizabeth Warren and Conan O’Brien fresh off the Oscar Dolby Theatre stage.

There are an intriguing amount of sit-downs here at SXSW this year after the fest kicks off Friday, rivaling the number of sidebar chats at a San Diego Comic-Con and certainly towering over the few at this past year’s Sundance, where the best chats were off-menu and not contained in any program: Elvis Mitchell’s conversations with Bill Murray and Quentin Tarantino.

In a déjà vu to Comic-Con, O’Brien will be on stage twice: once in a Sunday comedy event with...

Wim Wenders: The Journeys through Solitude and the Search for Meaning
Axel Cruysberghs in King of the Road (2016)
During his “King of the Road” Tour in Calcutta Wim Wenders said, “Today, there is a whole new form of loneliness, a very sick form…. There is a new disease, a deadly form of loneliness, which is digital loneliness.” His words instantly reminded me of one of the most quoted lines in the history of cinema, i.e. “I’m God’s lonely man“, by Travis Bickle. This loneliness has been lurking inside human beings for eons, only it’s medium has now changed with the advent of social media, which is making us more and more asocial and estranged from first-hand experiences. While watching Wenders’ films, it’s been observed that loneliness is a characteristic trait of all Wenders’ characters. Being a victim of the same loneliness for a month, I’ve been obsessively consuming Wenders’ work so here’s delving deep into the major themes of some of his films.

'A Quiet Place' Spin-Offs Teased by Franchise Creators
Image
Released in 2018, John Krasinski's A Quiet Place went on to become a box office sensation that took in more than $340 million dollars. He'd follow it up in 2020 with A Quiet Place Part II, and though he took a backseat for last year's A Quiet Place: Day One, the film was just as successful, proving the franchise still has a lot of life left in it no matter who sits in the director's chair. Now, creators Scott Beck and Bryan Woods are teasing where the series could go next, and it makes perfect sense.

Beck and Woods were on hand at the Independent Spirit Awards this past weekend to speak to Collider about their hit horror franchise, which has thus far stuck pretty close to home. The first film saw the Abbott family handle things from their isolated farm in upstate New York, and while Part II expanded things a little,...

“Much Ado About Nothing” was initially released in October and marked Waxahatchee’s follow-up to her 2024 LP, Tigers Blood, which dropped in March. The track arrived alongside a video directed by Anna St. Louis featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the artist on the road, from lighthearted moments before taking the stage to Crutchfield...

How That All-Star Grateful Dead Tribute Came Together for MusiCares (Exclusive)
Image
Distilling the musical legacy of the Grateful Dead into one night is no small feat, and into three hours is an even taller order. But Don Was — longtime president of Blue Note Records, respected multi-instrumentalist and musical director for the Jan. 31 MusiCares Persons of the Year event — was up to the task, curating an inspired lineup of devotees, including Billy Strings, The War on Drugs, Norah Jones, Dwight Yoakam, Maren Morris, Noah Kahan and Wynonna Judd, and longtime collaborators like John Mayer, Bruce Hornsby and Was himself, who’s a touring member of Bob Weir’s Wolf Bros playing his signature upright bass.

As Was tells it, the set list came together organically, with the artists choosing which songs to play in concert with show producer Rac Clark and MusiCares’ Laura Segura. The end result ran the gamut from the popular (“Truckin’,” performed by Yoakam) to the ambitious (“Terrapin Station...

Beyoncé isn’t guaranteed a Grammys country sweep
Image
Who would have thought Beyoncé would become the Grammys’ favorite country artist? After having had already been nominated in pop, R&b, rap, rock, and Edm categories, Queen Bey is this year’s only artist nominated across all four country genre categories: Best Country Solo Performance (“16 Carriages”), Best Country Duo/Group Performance (“II Most Wanted” with Miley Cyrus), Best Country Song (“Texas Hold ‘Em”), and Best Country Album (Cowboy Carter). How likely is she to win? As of this writing she ranks either first or second in all four categories according to the Gold Derby predictions, but she faces tough challenges across the board.

For Best Country Album, she has an especially strong advantage: Cowboy Carter is the only nominee that’s also up for Album of the Year, which may be a significant reason why she...

What Does "Lynchian" Really Mean?
Image
The great American filmmaker David Lynch passed away on January 15, 2025, sending the world abuzz with remembrance of his many contributions. From decade-defining movies like Eraserhead (1977), Blue Velvet (1986), Mulholland Drive (2001) to beloved television like Twin Peaks, Lynch created works of art so singular that a term was created to describe them and any like them that may follow: "Lynchian." What does it mean for something to be Lynchian? In honor of a remarkable auteur, here's a breakdown of the term.

So, What Does "Lynchian" Really Mean?

David Lynch established an entire artistic aura that goes beyond any specific technical style, but rather evokes a feeling. Lynch established a philosophy. According to Urban Dictionary, the official definition of Lynchian is "having the same balance between the macabre and mundane found in the works of filmmaker David Lynch." Juxtaposition is key to understanding what makes something Lynchian. Something might be Lynchian by creating...

What Happened To Frank On American Pickers? His Tragic Death Explained
Image
American Pickers lost a major star, not just with Frank Fritz's departure, but with his recent tragic hunting. Premiering in 2010 and still going strong 26 seasons in, American Pickers follows a group of collectors who travel across the United States collecting rare antiques to add to their personal collections, for their clients and even for resale. Though some question whether American Pickers is one of the faker shows on the History Channel, there's no denying its popularity and hype. The show plays more like a treasure hunt than an antique hunt, which adds to its appeal and suspense.

Frank was one of the main stars on the show for over 10 years, along with his co-star Mike Wolfe and Wolfe's business partner, associate Danielle Colby. Many episodes focused on Fritz's and Wolfe's respective businesses and their desire to find one-of-a-kind pieces of Americana. Sadly, Frank and Mike were often at each other's throats,...

Watch Maggie Rose Cut Down the Haters with ‘Fake Flowers’ on ‘CBS Saturday Morning’
Image
Maggie Rose performed a trio of songs off her Grammy-nominated album No One Gets Out Alive during her debut appearance on CBS Saturday Morning.

The Maryland native and Nashville lifer sang the devastating indictment of two-faced friends, “Fake Flowers,” a lilting “Under the Sun,” and the title track, a declaration to live a life uninhibited. “Buy the house, visit Rome/Wear the dress that stops the show,” she sang to open “No One Gets Out Alive.”

Released in April, No One Gets Out Alive cemented Rose’s expert pivot to rootsy Americana vocalist,...

‘The Outsiders’ Musical: Meet the Americana Duo Behind the Grammy-Nominated Score
Image
“You don’t choose music,” Jonathan Clay says. “Music chooses you. We love making music, in any facet.”

Since 2010, Clay and Zach Chance have fronted the Americana duo Jamestown Revival. Now, they’re coming to grips with being first-time Grammy nominees — but not for their work under Jamestown Revival. Instead, Clay and Chance are nominated for their score to The Outsiders, the Broadway adaptation of S.E. Hinton’s novel about the class and racial divisions in 1960s Tulsa. The pair, along with musical director-turned-collaborator Justin Levine, were already nominated for...

Luna Carmoon On The Battle Of Producing Her Debut ‘Hoard’, Being “Ghosted” By Film Four & Why She Will Never Trade The UK For Hollywood: “I’m Not Interested In Americana”
Image
British filmmaker Luna Carmoon first set plans to make her feature debut with Film Four after producing a series of buzzy short projects. That feature, however, was put on indefinite hold after execs at the broadcaster, as Carmoon describes it, “ghosted” her.

“Thankfully I didn’t sign any contracts with them. But I was going to be in development with them,” she explains from a photography studio in London where she is currently working. “And then they disappeared for a year and I never heard from them again.”

In response, Carmoon began writing a new project out of “desperation and sanctity.” The result was Hoard, which debuted at last year’s Venice Film Festival. The film picked up three prizes in Venice before embarking on an extended festival run, which included Lff where Carmoon won the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature. Previous winners of the Sutherland include Andrea Arnold,...

The appearance marked Waxahatchee’s second at the Tiny Desk, previously appearing in 2013 in support of her more indie rock-leaning second album Cerulean Salt. She referenced her past performance before launching into “Right Back To It.” “I...

Jimmy Stewart Was the Best Part of This Underseen John Ford Western
Image
Towards the end of his legendary filmmaking career, John Ford found himself reckoning with what he brought to the screen. Beginning with The Searchers and continuing through The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, Ford, a WWII Navy veteran, presented himself as an optimistic American full of idealism due to his picaresque tales and painterly vision of the Old West. On the surface of his beautiful work is a glossy painting, but underneath it all is sobering commentary filled with pathos about American culture and history that remains relevant today. In Ford's world, Americana has been built upon a foundation of myths, ones that propagate racist ideology and a skewed portrait of the white savior, which is explored with a meditative but fierce scrutiny in one of Ford's underrated gems, Two Rode Together, carried by a stellar two-hander in Jimmy Stewart and Richard Widmark.

'Richard Jewell' Star Paul Walter Hauser Gave Film a 3.5 on Letterboxd
Image
In an industry that is sometimes criticized for playing it safe and holding back honesty, actor Paul Walter Hauser is like a breath of fresh air. Following him on social media, you'll find that he's refreshingly honest, even going as far as to criticize his own work. Like many cinephiles out there, he's also an active user on Letterboxd, rating films left and right on the app, including his own. It was one such recent rating, for his 2019 film Richard Jewell, that got the attention of someone on X, and it's because his rating wasn't positively glowing.

On X, Hauser took the time to respond to a user who noticed his Letterboxd rating of Richard Jewell, a film in which he was directed by Clint Eastwood and played the titular character, was a bit low given his ample participation in the film. The user wrote, "Paul Walter Hauser giving Richard Jewell as 3.5 on Letterboxd,...

Paul Walter Hauser Gives His Own Movie 3.5 Stars on Letterboxd: ‘What’s Wrong With Giving an Honest Rating?’
Image
Paul Walter Hauser is an active Letterboxd user — sometimes even critiquing his own movies.

On Wednesday night, the actor took to X to respond to a post that reads, “Paul Walter Hauser giving Richard Jewell a 3.5 on Letterboxd, a movie in which he quite literally plays the title character, is one of the funnier things I’ve come across on that app.”

Hauser replied: “If I think The Shawshank Redemption and Schindler’s List are 5/5, and Richard Jewell is not a perfect movie/bonafide classic, what’s wrong with giving an honest rating? It’s a good film that is definitely worth watching. A 3.5 out of 5 is not a slight. It’s reality.”

Hauser starred in the 2019 Clint Eastwood-directed crime thriller as Richard Jewell, the man who found a bomb during the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta and alerted authorities to evacuate — only to later be wrongly accused of planting the explosives himself.
