English actor Tuppence Middleton is on a steady, slow rise and that seems to suit her just fine. Now she’s part of the impressive ensemble in David Fincher’s latest film Mank. She plays “Poor Sara” Mankiewicz, wife of the alcoholic co-writer of Citizen Kane, played by Gary Oldman. MaryAnn’s quick take… Primal and exhilarating, full of dread and tension. Drops us right into the chaos of war to tell an intimate story about fear and intensity of purpose. I’m “biast” (pro): love Christopher Nolan’s films

What are movies? They are not just mere stories, not simply dismissable entertainments, not even the lowest, basest ones. They are our mutual dreams… and nightmares. They howl with our rage and scream with our pain and ache with our hopes. The best of them touch us in ways we sometimes cannot even pinpoint, probably because what has percolated up from the filmmaker’s heart and soul and mind is an expression of that same collective unconscious that is waiting in us to be spoken to. We don’t always know why these films resonate,...

Curtis Bernhardt followed the route of his fellow directors Fritz Lang and Robert Siodmak: Germany, France, America, but unlike them he never went back to film in Germany at the end of his career. I looked at his Marlene Dietrich vehicle here. Now let's consider one from his French period.
Carrefour (Crossroads) is an amnesia thriller. Je t'aime amnesia thrillers. They're particularly interesting since the kind of movie amnesia where you forget who you are appears not to exist in real life: if you lost your identity, you would have lost so many other brain functions it's doubtful you would be abe to talk about it. The device remains popular not just because it's so useful for crazy plots, but because questions of identity fascinate us.
(Speaking of crazy plots: French novelist Sebastien Japrisot, whose name itself was an anagram, wrote one of the best, the twice-filmed A Trap For Cinderella.

Trap For Cinderella, the new film written and directed by the critically acclaimed filmmaker Iain Softley (The Skeleton Key, The Wings of the Dove) is available on digital platforms, including SundanceNow as of the 13th. Recently, I was able to interview Softley about the film. I might have snuck in a Hackers question too. Check it out below.
Micky is a fun-loving photographer, living a party lifestyle in London until a chance encounter with a childhood friend changes her world forever. The opposite to life-and-soul Micky, Do is a quiet bank clerk, with little by way of a social life. Yet much to the annoyance of her DJ boyfriend Jake, Micky is all too delighted to reacquaint herself with Do, embracing her old friend with typical gusto. But when they return to the tranquil French villa where they spent so many happy summers in their youth, tragedy strikes. A fire engulfs the building,...

As a fan of more ambitious filmmaking, it’s always exciting to see what project British filmmaker Iain Softley is going to take on next. From a cyberpunk cult classic to a sci-fi piece set in a psychiatric institute to a hoodoo thriller set in Louisiana, it’s hard to predict the subject matter and setting of his films. For his most recent project, Trap For Cinderella, Softley took on the task of adapting Sébastien Japrisot’s novel of the same name, bringing it to his home country and providing his own spin on the dark thriller.
Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with Iain for an exclusive 1 on 1 chat in honor of the film’s release. We discussed the process of adapting a novel, the use of identity as a theme in cinema, what drew him to the project and more!

Identity is a curious thing. Many people spend their entire lives trying to figure out what they want to occupy their time with, who their real friends are and why they do anything all. And that’s what people do under normal circumstances, so obviously things get a lot more complicated when you have no memory, have had reconstructive plastic surgery and now have no real idea of who you actually are.
That’s where Iain Softley’s Trap For Cinderella picks up. It begins with Micky (Tuppence Middleton) waking up in a hospital bed covered in third degree burns. She remembers almost nothing of her past life or her accident, which means she’s at the mercy of her Aunt’s assistant (Kerry Fox) to figure out which of her memories are real and which are fabricated. As the story goes on, more and more is leaked to Micky...

Memory and identity are two of the more familiar themes filmmakers like to explore, and both rise to the surface in the upcoming British thriller "Trap For Cinderella," which finds two best friends brought together by nostalgia and torn apart by tragedy. Directed by Iain Softley ("Backbeat," "Hackers"), the film stars Tuppence Middleton, Alexandra Roach and Kerry Fox and tells the story of Mickey and Do, a photographer and bank clerk respectively and former childhood friends, who get reacquainted and return to the tranquil French villa where they spent so many happy summers together. But when a fire leaves Do dead and Micky badly burnt and blighted by amnesia, everything gets turned upside down. And as you'll see in this exclusive clip, past and present eerily overlap. "Trap For Cinderalla" opens in select theaters and will also be available to watch on Cable VOD, SundanceNOW and other digital outlets on Friday,...

We get the chance to interview famous people every now and them. We ask them their favourite Statham movie. Here's what happens...
Jason Statham. Since the dawn of Den Of Geek, he has been our muse. Our mayor. Our driving force. So much so, that we ask lots of people that we meet just what their favourite Statham movie is (including the man himself). Here, we've gathered together lots of the responses we've had in one document.
And so here it is:
Jason Segel: "I guess it would have to be… oh man, there are so many. I’m going to go with The Transporter!"
Seth Rogen: "Crank. And then Crank 2."
Evan Goldberg: "It was him in Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, right? That’s the best one."
Alice Lowe: "I've never seen any of his films..... Oh I did!

★★★☆☆British director Iain Softley is something of a curio, having made films as diverse as Henry James adaptation The Wings of the Dove (1997) and the Angelina Jolie-starring cyberpunk thriller Hackers (1995). His latest film (another literary adaptation), Trap for Cinderella (2013), is awash with style and yet at the same time pays homage to the French New Wave with its over-boiled, but enjoyable, mystery-thriller narrative. Based on the novel by Sébastien Japrisot - dubbed the Graham Greene of French literature - the plot concerns a young, affluent fashionista, Micky (Tuppence Middleton), living in London's happening East End.

Iain Softley is a filmmaker who’s hard to categorise. His career is pretty fascinating, because it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of film he’ll make next. His first film was a drama about the early career of the Beatles, which he followed with an unconventional action movie about computer hackers. Then he made a period drama. Then a weird sci-fi movie set in a mental hospital. Then a spooky horror film, and followed it up with a fantasy movie for kids. How many directors can you name who’ve made a series of films that diverse?

Iain Softley’s psychological thriller, Trap for Cinderella, is just a few weeks away from hitting cinemas in the UK, and what we’ve seen so far suggests it’s going to be a memorable new entry for the genre.
The first trailer was released earlier in the month, giving us an excellent first look at Softley’s upcoming return. And now Lionsgate have released the film’s first poster, with Tuppence Middleton front and centre.

Iain Softley returns to the big screen this summer with an anticipated psychological thriller, Trap for Cinderella, marking yet another intriguing direction for the writer-director to take, whose career includes the likes of sci-fi, drama, family adventure, and mystery.
Rising young star Tuppence Middleton (Cleanskin) takes the lead here for Softley, and now Lionsgate have released the first trailer for the film, which is slightly restricted in nature.

Iain Softley's Trap For Cinderella harks back to elegant, suspenseful mysteries like Vertigo and Diabolique. In the shadow of those films, it's not particularly groundbreaking, but it's so stylish, intriguing and well-made that innovation hardly seems necessary. After all, the old adage warns us not to fix things that aren't broken, and Softley complies admirably. Were it not for a couple scenes involving cell phones, some pop songs, and the film's fairly copious amount of nudity, it'd be easy to mistake the movie for a lost, sleeper gem from the 60's. Alex Barber's excellent, desaturated 35 mm photography only adds to the retro feel. It's a deft, remarkably assured work, and certainly not the type of film I expected from the director of K-Pax. ...

While there are still not enough good roles for women out there, particularly in mainstream Hollywood, that hasn't stopped a batch of young female stars from exploding from out of nowhere in recent years. Head-turning performances have helped launch faces like Carey Mulligan, Mia Wasikowska, Emma Stone, Jennifer Lawrence, Felicity Jones and many others into the stratosphere, and the success last weekend of "The Hunger Games" has hopefully put to rest the fallacy that huge audiences won't turn up to big movies carried by a woman.
With that in mind, and hot on the heels of our ten picks for actors on the rise yesterday, we've chosen ten actresses who, while yet to be household names, have wowed audiences and casting directors in recent years, and look like strong contenders to headline the big movies of the future. By 1857, the Charles Dickens’ marriage was allegedly a loveless one when he met the 18-year-old Shakespearean actress Ellen ‘Nelly’ Ternan. Dickens was 45. Ealing Studios and The King's Speech financier Prescience has merged their respective sales arms. The companies previously worked together on both St. Trinian’s films, Dorian Gray and Easy Virtue. Back in November, was announced that British up and coming actresses Felicity Jones and Imogen Poots had signed on for Iain Softley’s indie project Trap For Cinderella.
Since then, both Jones and Poots launched big buzz around them – Jones gained critical acclaim for her role in Sundance hit Like Crazy, and previews for this summer’s Fright Night are recommending an exceptional performance from Poots.
