Vera must put together the pieces of a 11-year-old murder and stop a ruthless killer before he or she strikes again.

A decade after she was convicted of the murder of Abby, the precocious young daughter of her lover Keith Mantel, Jeannie Long escapes from prison. She returns home, but after she is cruelly rejected by her father, she kills herself. News of her death brings forward an alibi witness who confirms she was innocent, as she had long claimed, and Vera reopens the case. At a charity event where Keith pays tribute to Jeannie, Chris Winter, son of Jeannie's probation officer, Robert, is murdered, having tried to contact ex-cop Caroline Fletcher, who arrested Jeannie and later had an affair with Keith. As Abby was a friend of the Winters, Vera suspects Chris was the killer but comes to realise that he was the witness, attempting to cover up for the real murderer. When Keith is attacked after exposing the secret of another family member, Vera now knows that the Winters are shielding one, if not two, murderers.—don @ minifie-1

Jeannie manages to escape while en route to a hospital but after an unfortunate encounter with her father, commits suicide. The resulting publicity reveals a witness who can place her elsewhere at the time of Abby's murder. Convinced of Jeannie's innocence, DCI Vera Stanhope re-opens the case. Jeannie's probation officer, Robert Winter, provides Vera with interesting information, but when Winter's teenage son Chris is murdered, she realises he may have been a witness to Abby's murder all those years ago.
