It’s a deceptively big month on Prime Video in September! To kick things off, The Wheel of Time will be back for a second season on the service, while a live-action The Boys spinoff series called Gen V will be capping off the original series content later in the month.
But there are also some interesting new projects lined up between those two biggies. On September 15, Jenna Coleman and Oliver Jackson-Cohen star in what is sure to be a delicious tale of revenge. Wilderness, based on B.E. Jones’ novel of the same name, stars Coleman as a heartbroken wife who discovers her husband has been cheating on her after she gives up her whole life to move over to America with him and support his career.

With its list of new releases for September 2022, Prime Video is finally unveiling the most anticipated (and expensive) series in the streamer’s history.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power will arrive to Prime Video’s servers on Sept. 2, 2022. This Lord of the Rings prequel, set in J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age, is in many ways the kind of TV property that Prime Video must have always wanted. It’s certainly the TV property most fitting with the company’s largesse and riches. The Rings of Power will cover the creation of the titular rings and many important events from Tolkien’s lore (condensed into a more TV-appropriate timeframe).
Middle-earth is going to be the happening spot on Amazon and the streaming world at large this month, but Prime Video does have a handful of other originals for the fantasy-phobic. Flight/Risk, a documentary about the Boeing 737 Max design disasters,...

United Kingdom based distributor Signature Entertainment is set to release Carles Torrens' (Apartment 143) Pet. This horrifying thriller pits one very lonely man against the woman of his dreams/nightmares. Centrally starring Dominic Monaghan and Ksenia Solo, the film has already released via Video-on-demand, in the Us. It is now slated to show on DVD, in the UK, this March. A UK official release trailer is available now! The trailer shows Seth (Monaghan) stalking Holly (Solo). He follows her to her work. Then, he ups the ante, by abducting her, in her own home. In a remote locale, Holly becomes unhinged as Seth struggles to deal with her devolving personality. Who is crazier Seth or Holly? Pet looks to be an exciting psychological thriller. Fans in the UK will be able to pick up this title on March 13th. Us fans can likely find Torrens' latest on their favourite VOD platform.

See enough horror films and you’ll find it easy to believe that just about every home and business in America features a basement in which a comely young woman is being held prisoner. That familiar scenario is rehashed in Pet, director Carles Torrens’ (Apartment 143) sophomore feature starring Lord of the Rings veteran Dominic Monaghan as a seemingly mild-mannered, lonely man who resorts to a drastic solution to win the love of the object of his desire. Or, that may not be his goal at all.

A woman is locked in a cage by a man who wants to change her. That's both a metaphor for too many modern relationships and the premise of a new film by director Carles Torrens (Apartment 143). Seth (Dominic Monaghan), an animal shelter worker in Los Angeles, sees former schoolmate Holly (Ksenia Solo) on a bus one day and tries to rekindle their acquaintance. Holly politely declines but soon finds herself an object of unwanted attention from Seth. He tracks her down through social media and shows up at a restaurant where she works as a waitress. Holly, still dealing with the ramifications of ending a relationship that wasn't working out, is none too happy about Seth's increasingly pushy and demanding attitude, and tries her...

[Guest reporter Jenny Nulf shares her impressions of three movies from this year’s South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, Texas, including I Am Not a Serial Killer, I Am a Hero, and Pet.]
I Am Not a Serial Killer: What happens when a movie gets stuck in limbo for three years? Well, the director is given enough time to create a slow-burning monster movie that will lurk in the back of your mind long after viewing it.
In a tiny Midwestern town, John Wayne Cleaver (Max Records) works with his mother and aunt at a funeral home, helping her embalm the dead bodies. A possible sociopath, John also chats regularly with his psychologist, Dr. Neblin (Karl Geary), about how to subside his murderous tendencies. Then things start to go wrong when an actual serial killer sweeps through the town, and when Max discovers the identity of the killer, it takes him down a terrifying path of self-discovery. This is not your average, sweet coming-of-age story.

I’m back! It’s been a long time and I apologise for that, moving house turned out to be a far far longer process than I anticipated or had been led to believe. Three weeks turned into six, six weeks turned into three months and now here we are.
Aside from the length of time it takes, moving house was a real eye opener in other areas too. Specifically in terms of how I inform you week on week of all of this wonderful content available to stream and then how you have to put up with lacklustre delivery from various ISPs. My mother is the reason I’m a genre film fan; it’s all her fault. Over the years I’ve made her countless lists of movies I think she’ll like. I made her watch Session 9 and Pontypool, and finally talked her into seeing Shaun of the Dead.
My mom got a Roku for Christmas. The tables have turned.
I suddenly find myself inundated with recommendations and Netflix instant discoveries. She’s digging deep. Most of her suggestions are indie, low budget, or “what’s that?” horror films.
My mom may have informed my cinematic tastes, but she’s also the woman who forced me to watch Devil in the theater, and goaded me into bumping Chernobyl Diaries and Apollo 18 up my queue. No one’s perfect.
Her tastes may sometimes be questionable, but she’s my mom, and I still do what she says. Because of her I watched Apartment 143.

Although most film critics don’t have the balls required to plumb these newfound depths of depravity, those with enough courage will emerge on the other side (albeit after many hot and soapy baths), triumphantly hearkening 2012 as a banner year for the horror genre. Apartment 143
Stars: Kai Lennox, Gia Mantegna, Michael O’Keefe, Francesc Garrido, Fiona Glascott, Rick Gonzalez | Written by Rodrigo Cortés | Directed by Carles Torrens
Ghosts, they are a grumpy bunch aren’t they? They wonder the house and throw things around, make people bend over backwards and swear a lot, and if we are to believe in what films say then they just love the attention of a well-placed surveillance camera and recording device. The ones that are born from rage and violence are often the subject of a good Asian horror as we see in the most famous exports such as The Ring (Ringu) and The Grudge (Ju-On), and this with just a hint ofParanormal Activity is where Apartment 143 takes its inspiration.
The storyline for Apartment 143 is fairly typical, we know it quite well. A haunted family decide to bring in a team of parapsychologists to find...

As a heads up, this post does contain potential spoilers for the past three Paranormal Activity films. The 4th remains safe, but it’s essential to discuss the specifics of the past of the franchise to also discuss its future.
And now here we are. It’s hard to believe that we’re already four films deep, but come Friday the newest chapter in the Paranormal franchise makes that a reality. Whether or not you are a fan of the films you can’t deny that they’re absolute cash cows and its safe to say there will be more. Many, many more. When your profit is umpteen times your budget it’s not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. So acknowledging the inevitable, that next October we can expect PA5 and probably 6 the following year, where can the franchise go from here? From my perspective,...

Apartment 143 impressed many with its take on the documentary horror subgenre and we recently took some time to sit down with the film’s director to talk about his influences, the current state of Spanish horror cinema and how he subverted audience expectation to create something fresh.
You can read our review of the film here, and you can buy the DVD from the 15th of October. It’s a refreshing take on a well-worn story and the low-key performances and strident reach for realism may not always sidestep the cliché minefield inherent in the set up but Torrens and his cast do a lot of things right.
Here’s my interview with the director of Apartment 143, Carles Torrens,
It seems to be a great time for Spanish Horror – are there cultural aspects which offer something different to the usual Hollywood horror films?

Ahead of its October 15th UK DVD release courtesy of Momentum Pictures, we’ve nabbed an exclusive look at the paranormal mind games suffered by the residents of Apartment 143. Check it out right here, right now!
The film is directed by Carles Torrens and stars Francesc Garrido and Fiona Glascott.
Synopsis:
Following the tragic death of his wife, Alan White and his two children find themselves plagued by a series of inexplicable events that eventually force them to leave their home and move into an apartment building in the city. Worryingly, within a week of moving, they once again begin to experience the strange phenomena that threaten to tear apart what is left of their family.
Desperate for answers and, hopefully, a release from what he is beginning to believe is a haunting, Alan requests the help of a small team of parapsychologists experienced in investigating and explaining such incidents.

Ever since William Friedkin’s The Exorcist became one of the most powerful and successful horror films ever, people have tried and failed to replicate the style and power of the film. Most recently we have had The Possession, Lovely Molly, and The Last Exorcism and to an extent the Paranormal Activity films all dealing with someone (usually female) who may have something living inside them that is not of this earthly plane.
Most of the above have had mixed results and most got a decent cinema release. So it’s surprising that Apartment 143 is going straight to DVD because it has a possession element which feels like the most scary and powerful that we have seen on-screen for quite a while.
Launching straight into the action we find ourselves in the run-down apartment of the White family who have moved here after the disturbances at their former home...

Chicago – I was hoping that the practically straight-to-Blu-ray “Apartment 143,” written and produced by “Buried” and “Red Lights” director Rodrigo Cortes, would be a clever horror alternative that just didn’t find the right path to mainstream success but was truly worth your time. My hopes were dashed against the rocks of cliched storytelling, awful acting, and generic direction about ten minutes into this mess. A few decent ideas in an interesting climax save it from complete disaster but you’re likely to have turned it off by that time and visited a scarier location.

At this point, with the steady stream of Paranormal Activity sequels standalone wrecks like Apollo 18 or The Last Exorcism, you’re either already a fan of the found footage horror movement or you know well enough to stay away. The subgenre seems to attract many directors looking for a cheap and easy flick and so many of them just copy and paste the same tricks used by their predecessors with precious few innovating like we saw in Chronicle and The Troll Hunter (neither are technically horror, but it’s not their fault the horror entries are stagnant. Director Carles Torrens's Apartment 143 brings nothing new to the table, and doesn’t even manage to use the basic tricks of the genre effectively.

If you're not in San Diego for Comic-Con or if you have no interest in the show (lord how we wish we were you), you should be aware that Rodrigo Cortes' latest thriller, Red Lights, hits theatres nationwide this Friday. How about a clip?
Red Lights follows Tom Buckley (Murphy), the assistant to veteran paranormal expert Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver), who makes it her job to prove metaphysical phenomena to be nothing more than elaborate hoaxes being played by creative scam artists. They've traveled the globe together in search of proof, never finding anything that can credibly prove the existence of a single true psychic or the like.
But the one 'scam artist' that Dr. Matheson has never been able to disprove is the legendary psychic Simon Silver (Robert DeNiro), a charismatic showman of sorts whose return to the spotlight raises tensions for both Dr. Matheson and Tom, leaving...

*spoiler alert Director: Carles Torrens. Writer: Rodrigo Cortés. Cast: Kai Lennox, Gia Mantegna and Michael O'Keefe Apartment 143 (aka Emergo) is one of those films that almost stand out in the swarm of found footage style of films. Most of the problems are merely logistical. As a ghost story, it's almost as good as Poltergeist and Insidious put together, but made with a tighter budget! This movie literally puts viewers in the "Twilight Zone" with no explanation at all. With this film, there is one annoying detail that never gets answered: why is Apartment 143 located near the top floor? Usually numbering systems begin from the first floor and rise as more layers are added. When considering that this movie is made by Hispanic team of Carles Torrens, director, and Rodrigo Cortés, writer, they did not consider putting in some cultural nuances. There have been some incredible films with some...

We talk with Apartment 143 director Carles Torrens in our latest interview. The found footage film was scripted by Rodrigo Cortes (Buried, Red Lights) and takes a scientific look at paranormal events that plague a family within their apartment. With the film receiving a limited theatrical release, we had the opportunity to talk with Carles about joining the recent wave of found footage films and looking at paranormal events from a scientific point of view:
Apartment 143 differs from many of the recent found footage films in that it really focuses on the character development over scares. Was this a concept you worked on with Rodrigo Cortes or was the script pretty much complete by the time you took a look at it?
Carles Torrens: This was a screenplay that Rodrigo Cortes developed on his own and he was planning to direct it as some point. The movie was...

Apartment 143 follows three parapsychologists who begin investigating a series of anomalous phenomena in an apartment, and recently we spoke to filmmaker Carles Torrens about his involvement on the flick.
The project was Torrens' first feature, and we also discussed his experiences making the challenging indie thriller, which uses well over 10 different forms of footage style as the team begins interviewing and recording the tenants and the unexplained phenomena intensify. As they go deeper into their research, it is revealed that a family's secrets may also be a factor into the mysterious supernatural happenings inside Apartment 143.
