Good at the start but quite boring
meganyoung-2535625 February 2023
At the start it was interesting but toward the end the storyline kept on going and got quite boring. Tbh I only watched it because Kang Daniel was in it. There are some very funny characters and moments. The girl characters annoyed me alot while watching it. And it was quite confusing (the storyline) it felt like there was so many different parts going on and it was hard to catch up. The mix of love and cops was a good idea but an hour every episode and 16 episodes was a bit much and it would have been more enjoyable if it was shorter. I didn't even bother watching till the end. But the acting wasn't that bad.

A prototype story meant to cause frustration through repetition before the final pay-off
Humbby24 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Well, that was a rollercoaster ride!

Rookie Cops is a prime example of a show that has a structure that frustrates me throughout the entire story, and serves as a prototype for other shows that exhibit similar story telling.

Don't get me wrong, the show was good, and I'll talk about the good stuff in more detail later, but it was frustrating to watch nonetheless.

A story can be comprised of smaller stories, which serve as a purpose for character development or the incremental progress towards the main goal. This is exactly the route Rookie Cops decided to take. The students, still naïve, morally guided and always seeking justice, find themselves in various troubling situations, where not everything goes according to plan, if anything at all. During these various encounters with unlawful citizens they find out how awful some people can be and how difficult it can be to catch some of the criminals. Not only that, they also realise that their plans are full of gaps that can be exploited, and that good plans can also have negative consequences.

The extreme justice seeking behaviour, naivety, total disregard for possible dangers and the repetition of such behaviours is the way to get me frustrated. To be fair, I also am extremely concerned with justice, and I often disagree with how people are being punished or treated in relation to how the public perceives the perpetrator and their crimes. Justice, is not the rehabilitation of the criminal, justice has nothing to do with human rights, justice is when the people feel that the perpetrator in question is punished or treated in a way that is equally or more harsh than the crime they committed to the victim. Justice has nothing to do with preventing crime, it has to do with pleasing the population and gaining trust in the system, not with giving certain people second chances.

I find it important to make that clear, because it seems that people really do not understand why prisons exist or why people threw tomatoes at criminals, or paid to watch someone get decapitated in the past. There's a reason why people lack faith in the judicial system, especially nowadays. While this show does not mention any of the punishments given to any of the criminals, the way they get captured is too light. Think about of Ottomans, who amputated hands from thieves in some severe cases. Compare this to today's system, where any small injury of the criminal can cause an investigation or punishment to the cop, this is a bad system, and now wonder that so few people actually want to do such dangerous work while barely being able to defend themselves or carry out the work they have to do.

This is why I dislike justice seeking behaviour, because most of it, has nothing to do with justice, it's punishing criminals, trying to cure them, while treating them with velvet hands. The naivety, disregard of danger and repetition of such behaviour should be clear enough of why it frustrates me.

Because of this, I cannot give the show a 10/10 even if the rest of it was perfect, which it wasn't, but it was good.

I know that if there's anything people dislike about the show, it's the characters. I found the characters to be fine, the male lead is calm, somewhat difficult to read emotionally, but not boring. The female lead was amazing, she played her role really well in all situations. The side characters were interesting in their own way, but Ari and Woo Joo Young really lacked depth that Yoo Dae Il, Kim Tak or Ki Han Na had.

I don't want to make this too long, so the final thing I want to say is that, the plot twist at the end of episode fifteen was glorious! They face on Jo Hansol when he saw they captured Go Eun Gang instead of their prostitute was so satisfying to watch! The soundtrack that played during that scene and during the credits was great too, written by the male lead of the show Kang Daniel. At that moment, Jo Hansol really didn't know what to do anymore, he just didn't have anywhere to go. Anything he'd do would just lead to his demise.

The final episode was somewhat disappointing, as I had hoped the capture of Jo Hansol had taken a different direction than it did, and not knowing what punishment he and the corrupt former officers faced after trial is wasted potential, as it's a moment where you can really influence people's feelings.

Highly Underated! ⭐ 10/10

I didn't expect too much from the drama when I first saw the trailer, but after watching it I was amazed by how I fell in love with it! The storyline is captivating and even the side plots provoke so many feelings of happiness, laughter and even sorrow. I can't believe this drama hasn't received more attention and doesn't have a higher rating. It's a real diamond. Over the years I've watched hundreds of Kdramas and this would be one of my favourites. Do yourself a favour and watch it.

Great Feel-Good Drama
refordgarry5 March 2022
If this were a US Series the cast, selected solely on "identity" wouldn't've gotten on so well together as those of this nice K-Drama young cast. Having just watched Episode 11, which I recommend as a well-written, feel-good episode, I was struck by the sheer charm of 8 young people really interacting with each other like human beings, rather than a collection of identity-politik epithets whom writers deem young people should be - but are not. South Korea, is definitely still a civilisation state, i.e. One where the civilisation still dictates what is artistically plausible, not some sort of neo-liberal concepts of universality, which are artistic phonies. Well done, team!

well balanced, fast paced, good storyline drama

Warning: Spoilers
It's really a youth drama set in a police university and telling about the friendships and struggles of the students.

Rookie cops have great chemistry from all casts, realistic plot with social & political issues, and good romantic scences.(Ep 8 ending😇) This is my comfort drama.

Rookie Cops Ep 6

"You can't tell whether you feel uncomfortable or feel your heart flutter?"

"Then, date someone who doesn't confuse you".

The last 5 episodes are irritating
Notyourenemy6 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Not gonna lie its good at first. Everything is chill and wholesome. But the last 5 episodes are unexpectedly stressing. It is like the characters suddenly left their common sense and most drama scenes were too exaggerated (except for the death of Tak's brother). I feel like from the last episodes are just filler episodes. Honestly the death of Haeil doesn't have much impact to me because of the reason why he did in the first place. Why didn't he just call the police in the first place? Or if he wants evidence why be distracted? Also why does Seunghyun have to call haeil multiple times when he could've at least called the police, considering that haeil already mentioned that he is in trouble and may have heard the commotion in the backround or know the way haeil makes a sound. And especially when haeil fell down the water, why didn't he tried his best to break the car's glass or find a way to escape?? What can a non-waterproof phone can do underwater? He just kept on tapping the phone. Where's the common sense? And then another was when Tak and SeungHyun had issues. It's kind of annoying that both of them just kept their emotions and issues bottled up and never told their girlfriends about it. They only make them be worried to death.

It's a bit of everything; romance, comedy, suspense, thriller, e.t.c

Warning: Spoilers
Loved each and every moment of watching this drama series. It's a bit of everything; romance, comedy, suspense, thriller, e.t.c. So, it will give you joy and tears and angst and everything honestly. I believe it's a laid back series which everyone can enjoy. The fight for freedom against the seniors at the police college really brought me to tears. It's alright beautiful. Hana struggling while being a heroin was also memorable. Seunghyun's dilemma with his family was also something to fathom. The highlight for me was the fight scene in the club at the end. The realistic kiss scenes were a breath of fresh air from the usual wide-eyed kdrama 😘 Sooo good. Totally recommended.

Don't believe the ratings
tunesplitter27 October 2022
This show is atleast mid. I'm giving 1 star because the hardcore korea fans hyping up every peoduction from korea. No it's not awesome just because it's from korea. I can't believe that. Imdb is not made for that.

This show is barely watchable. The dub in german and english is horrible. In korean it's alright. You can watch that if your girlfriend force you to watch it. But to be honest it's a waste of time. There a lot of awesome korean productions you can watch. And a lot better shows on Disney plus. Don't ever believe the imdb ratings for korean productions, especially kdrama. What a shame for this website. Sorry.

What even is this....
Park_Min14 September 2023
Shamelessly copy-pasting their homework from Police University (2021). Nonetheless, the drama had the worst combination of anything and everything which ruined any appeal for it. It would have been a tiny bit better if the drama didn't have any romance. Aside from the first 2 minutes and 42 seconds of the introduction scene of the first episode, this drama was a waste of carbon emissions. Good cast, but way too long with not enough plot
Hallelujah28927 May 2023
"Rookie Cops" has a good cast, and some decent plot turns. It would be a good series to watch, except it's very long (twelve episodes which are an hour long each) and has a lot of filler. No reason why episodes should be an hour long!

I also found some main plot story lines predictable (the guy gets the girl) and not well thought out (what villain doesn't check for wires). Still, the smaller moments have some charm due to good actors, like the janitor's antics, the female lead's proud parents.

It's a shame because there's a good cast here and at times decent writing. I stuck through some episodes then skipped forward, and confirmed for myself the series is a bit of a sprawling mess.

The should really blend it's A and B plot lines better as it seems like two different seasons even though it's only just one. What starts out as entry to a police academy and orientation story segues into major conspiracy land, and it's up to our trainees to solve it-except they don't have much of a challenge.

And of course there's a death, and we meet everyone's parents and hear back stories, and it's just too much for my capacity to care for six or seven families and their hopes and dreams, when there's not a compelling, unifying plot.

My review may not be fair as I skipped a lot. I don't think this is a bad show, but it's overly long and thin on plot.
