Peter Yates' "Bullitt" is one of the most stylish cop flicks ever made. Those multi-screen opening credits designed by the great Pablo Ferro, that jazzily urbane Lalo Schifren score, those wildly cool outfits donned by Steve McQueen at the height of his laconic sexiness (some inspired by the suits sported by real life detective Dave Toschi) –- it's a stone groove punctuated by spasms of violence and, of course, a raucous car chase through the hilly streets of San Francisco. It's so ineffably pleasurable, you don't mind that the narrative is a sketchily plotted afterthought. Who needs an intricately structured story when you're watching, as Quentin Tarantino wrote in his book "Cinema Speculation," "one of the best directed movies ever made?"
You throw on "Bullitt" for the 1968-ness of it all (it's the apolitical flip-side of the coin to Haskell Wexler's roiling docudrama "Medium Cool"), as well as the...

Netflix has ordered a new animated comedy series from “Norsemen” creators Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, the creatives’ first foray into the cartoon arts at a time when adult-focused animation is booming and live-action production has slowed or stopped in many territories.
“Captain Fall” will track titular Jonathan Fall, a wet-behind-the-ears yet good-hearted sea captain who unwittingly finds himself at the helm of a smuggling ship. Details about animation style, casting, direction and production have yet to be announced.
Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the show to be released in two parts. Helgaker and Torgersen will serve as creators, showrunners and executive producers for the series, with animation vet and Netflix producer Joel Trussell (“Electric City”) joining them as executive producer.

Hanks also wrote the film’s screenplay, from a novel by C.S. Forester. The movie hits U.S. shores on June 12. Watch the trailer below.
In “Greyhound,” in the early days of World War II, an international convoy of 37 Allied ships, led by captain Ernest Krause (Hanks) in his first command of a U.S. destroyer, crosses the North Atlantic while being pursued by Nazi U-boats. Amid the treachery of the maritime battle at stake, Krause must also face his own demons and self-doubts as a newly minted commander. We've been provided with the first teaser trailer, poster, and a few images from director Ben Ketai's horror film Beneath. Coal mines are scary enough places when everything's going right, but the terror level jumps up a few notches after a collapse traps the crew 600 feet underground; it's only a matter of time before they turn on each other in a desperate bid to survive. This teaser leaves out the dialogue, opting instead to let the music and camerawork take viewers down into the depths of the mine and follow along on the inevitable descent into madness. It proved an effective decision, as Beneath has been chosen to be the opening film of Screamfest, starting October 8th. Beneath stars Jeff Fahey (Lost), Kelly Noonan, Joey Kern (Electric City), Brent Briscoe (Parks & Recreation), Mark L Young (We're the Millers), and Eric Etebari (Lincoln Lawyer). Last year, Playtone heads Tom Hanks and Gary Goeztman co-optioned the film rights to best-seller Erik Larson’s non-fiction book In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin. The prestigious period drama is being co-backed by Universal Pictures, but has failed to make much progress over the past nine months since Hanks came aboard as both leading man and producer. That can be attributed to him working on the animated web series Electric City, as well as tackling the title role Paul Greengrass’ Captain Phillips.
Hanks and Goeztman have garnered Emmy nods for HBO’s political drama Game Change – not to mention, the former is getting to work on Disney’s Mary Poppins behind-the-scenes drama, titled Saving Mr. Banks – but plan to get ...

The Internet has doomed us to bizarre times. Lol cats, Reddit iAMAs and Re-pins, the strangeness never stops and its never stops evolving. And weirdest of all, there’s going to be a time when we cease to notice this as novel. The thirty-somethings who grew up during this cultural shift will become out-dated sixty-somethings. Internet oddity will become as customary a part of life.
That’s the world Tom Hanks’ Electric City lives in – a cosmos where information soaks through every function of existence, and where much of that information is bizarre. Electric City is also a post-modern realm, as much a product of stylized gumshoe fiction as of cyberpunk. Imagine a fedora-wearing fusion of Dashiell Hammett and William Gibson, and you’re on the right monorail track.

If you were actually measuring for buzz or even a raised sense of excitement for Tom Hanks’ Electric City, a new online animated series, well, you probably didn’t detect much. At Comic-Con last weekend, web series were part of the story, as Bryan Singer and Tom Hanks both unveiled new online ventures. Tuesday, while the headlines tout Yahoo!'s new boss Marissa Mayer, the web portal launches the first ten 4-7-minute episodes of Hanks’ animated dystopian sci-fi adventure “Electric City." The next ten installments will be released on July 18 and 19. Heinlein fan Hanks has been developing the Reliance Entertainment-backed project for some two years at Playtone. The well-written, handsomely animated series immediately draws you into its polluted future world, in which rebel grandmothers fight against mob gangsters via hunky hired assassin Cleveland Carr, voiced by Hanks. (His blond love interest runs a radio show, natch.) Do-good killer Carr operates in a primitive post-apocalyptic low-tech society with no power grid and danger around every corner. The Nyt spoke to Hanks here and Singer here. Hanks has long been a prolific.

Every so often a new web series comes out that is heralded as an "all new type of interactive experience!" It's not. Increasingly though, networks are doggedly putting money behind webisodes that supplement their main content (like Fox did partnering with At&T to release the Touch-offshoot web series Daybreak this summer). Interacting with televisions shows over the internet and through other media is nothing new - we do it with our fan forums and sub-reddits and frantic "did you just see that??" texts to friends. The difference here is that there is a desire to both control and quantify that experience through specifically supported forums and other tie-ins that are created and moderated by the network or studio. Again though, what else is new? What makes the upcoming Electric City interesting - it being the latest attempt at a mainstream web series - is Tom Hanks. For more on...

Tom Hanks has debuted the first footage from his new animated sci-fi web-series Electric City, which he developed in collaboration with Yahoo! I was initially excited about this project when it was announced, but now having seen some footage, it didn't really end up being what I was expecting. I was expecting something that looked a lot better, but the animation, style, and design turned out looking a little cheap.
The series was created by Hanks, and he stars in it alongside Jeanne Tripplehorn, Holland Taylor, Ginnifer Goodwin, Jason Antoon, Chris Parnell, and Paul Scheer. The first ten 5-7 minute episodes will premiere on Yahoo! starting on July 17th, with the other episodes being released July 18th and July 19th. The idea is built around an interactive experience so that the viewers can interact with the content and with each other. The story sounds like it could be interesting.

Tom Hanks is heading to Electric City. No, Dunderheads, he’s not guesting on The Office, which is, of course, set in Scranton, Pa., a.k.a. Electric City. The two-time Oscar winner has created a new animated web series about a seeming oasis of idealistic possibility set amongst a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future. Hanks has been working on the idea for years, at one point contemplating bringing his characters to life with puppets. Instead, Yahoo will host a series of short five-to-seven-minute episodes, the first 10 of which will premiere on July 17. Additional episodes will follow on July 18-19, completing the 90-minute adventure.

I wonder if this will move Yahoo’s stock price. From the AP:
Yahoo said Wednesday it is expanding its original offerings, partnering with Liquid Comics to offer motion-comics. The two companies said they’ll make the first two titles — created by film directors Barry Sonnenfeld and Guy Ritchie — available online later this summer through Yahoo! Screen.
Motion comics blend elements of comic book art and animation, offering some movement and action but on a limited scale. It’s gained ground and popularity in recent years as publishers big and small experiment with the medium, which can viewed online or on devices like tablets and iPads.
“This is compelling content from great storytellers, and we are excited to be adding Liquid Comics to our robust slate of premium content partners,” said Erin McPherson, vice president and head of video for Yahoo.

Why did Tom Hanks choose to partner with Yahoo for his next creative venture, “Electric City”? It appears the Hollywood icon has tired of the industry’s lack of creative flexibility and its limits on storytelling -- not to mention the diminishing profit margins. “We can tell this story as long as we keep it alive and fresh online. We can’t exhaust the theme,” Hanks said during a private event Tuesday at Las Vegas’ Bellagio Hotel as part of the Consumer Electronics Show. “We’re trying to make ambiguous attractive. Ambiguity is anathema to them,”...

The hustle and bustle of sharp-elbowed gadget-watchers is a time-honored lament at CES, but this year it’s getting to the point where a journalist can’t even get to look at the darn products, what with all the celebrities hanging around. While celeb endorsements are nothing new, the stars are out in full force this year. We’re not sure whether they’re feeling geek chic as Hollywood’s latest status symbol or simply see hopping on the tech bandwagon as the next logical biz opportunity — like having a clothing line, perfume, or brand of booze.

Actors whose projects start appearing online usually have seen better days, but when none other than Tom Hanks announced that his new series will stream on Yahoo!, you know that online media game is changing.
Yahoo! and Hanks' Playtone imprint are producing the series and apparently, Hanks has been trying to get Electric City off the ground for years, first envisioning using puppets. Hanks' 30-episode (with each ep being about three to four minutes long) animated series, Electric City, will premiere on Yahoo! this spring.
Electric City takes place in a post-apocalyptic city in the future. "On the surface, the Electric City is utopia and under the surface, Electric City is secrets and heavy-handed state control," says Erin McPherson, vice president and head of original programming at Yahoo!. "What we found really compelling is that this is perfect for a highly digital audience, a lean-forward audience who likes to utilize the medium of the Internet.

Web series have taken off in a big way over the last few years, but while one or two stars have been made thanks to their participation in series, and the likes of Joss Whedon have found ways to make the format work for them, few huge Hollywood types have been all that involved. Tom Hanks has decided to be one of the first, signing on to produce and star in 'net-based animated sci-fi series Electric City.
The series will run for 90 minutes via various Yahoo services and split into 20 chunks. And from the sounds of it, Hanks is doing far more than just adding his name to the brand so people check it out. "Tom actually created this. He wrote and he stars in the lead voice," says Yahoo's Erin McPherson. "It is animated and it has a science fiction bent and in that way, like all great science fiction,...

He will get a “created by” credit on the show as well as provide the voice of the title character.
