Exclusive: Netflix has tapped Discovery’s top production executive Jhamal Robinson as VP of Production Management for the U.S. and Canada.

Reporting to Ty Warren, Netflix’s VP of Physical Production, Robinson will oversee production management for Netflix series and films in North America. The Ucan production leads for series, film, non-fiction, production planning, and strategy & operations will now report to him.

Netflix has ordered a new animated comedy series from “Norsemen” creators Jon Iver Helgaker and Jonas Torgersen, the creatives’ first foray into the cartoon arts at a time when adult-focused animation is booming and live-action production has slowed or stopped in many territories.

“Captain Fall” will track titular Jonathan Fall, a wet-behind-the-ears yet good-hearted sea captain who unwittingly finds himself at the helm of a smuggling ship. Details about animation style, casting, direction and production have yet to be announced.

Netflix has ordered 20 episodes of the show to be released in two parts. Helgaker and Torgersen will serve as creators, showrunners and executive producers for the series, with animation vet and Netflix producer Joel Trussell (“Electric City”) joining them as executive producer.

The first trailer for the seafaring World War II epic “Greyhound,” directed by Aaron Schneider, has landed. The movie stars Tom Hanks as a Navy commander on his first wartime assignment amid World War II’s Battle for the Atlantic between the Allied and the Axis powers. We've been provided with the first teaser trailer, poster, and a few images from director Ben Ketai's horror film Beneath.  Coal mines are scary enough places when everything's going right, but the terror level jumps up a few notches after a collapse traps the crew 600 feet underground; it's only a matter of time before they turn on each other in a desperate bid to survive.  This teaser leaves out the dialogue, opting instead to let the music and camerawork take viewers down into the depths of the mine and follow along on the inevitable descent into madness.  It proved an effective decision, as Beneath has been chosen to be the opening film of Screamfest, starting October 8th. New York — Yahoo's latest slate of original programming is led by Ed Helms as a 4-inch-tall crime fighter.

"Tiny Commando," created by the "The Office" star, was unveiled Monday night in a presentation by Yahoo to advertisers in New York. It stars Helms, along with Zachary Levi, of "Chuck," and Gillian Jacobs, of "Community."

Following in Netflix's footsteps, Yahoo will simultaneously release all episodes of "Tiny Commando" and other comedy series this fall.

At Comic-Con last weekend, web series were part of the story, as Bryan Singer and Tom Hanks both unveiled new online ventures. Tuesday, while the headlines tout Yahoo!'s new boss Marissa Mayer, the web portal launches the first ten 4-7-minute episodes of Hanks’ animated dystopian sci-fi adventure “Electric City." The next ten installments will be released on July 18 and 19. Heinlein fan Hanks has been developing the Reliance Entertainment-backed project for some two years at Playtone. The well-written, handsomely animated series immediately draws you into its polluted future world, in which rebel grandmothers fight against mob gangsters via hunky hired assassin Cleveland Carr, voiced by Hanks. Every so often a new web series comes out that is heralded as an "all new type of interactive experience!"  It's not.  Increasingly though, networks are doggedly putting money behind webisodes that supplement their main content (like Fox did partnering with At&T to release the Touch-offshoot web series Daybreak this summer).  Interacting with televisions shows over the internet and through other media is nothing new - we do it with our fan forums and sub-reddits and frantic "did you just see that??" texts to friends.  The difference here is that there is a desire to both control and quantify that experience through specifically supported forums and other tie-ins that are created and moderated by the network or studio.  Again though, what else is new? Earlier this year, we brought you the news that Tom Hanks would be bringing an original creation to Yahoo! in the form of the company's first ever scripted series, Electric City. The first teaser trailer for the project is now available. Tom Hanks is heading to Electric City. No, Dunderheads, he’s not guesting on The Office, which is, of course, set in Scranton, Pa., a.k.a. Electric City. The two-time Oscar winner has created a new animated web series about a seeming oasis of idealistic possibility set amongst a dystopian, post-apocalyptic future. Hanks has been working on the idea for years, at one point contemplating bringing his characters to life with puppets. Instead, Yahoo will host a series of short five-to-seven-minute episodes, the first 10 of which will premiere on July 17. Additional episodes will follow on July 18-19, completing the 90-minute adventure.

Yahoo said Wednesday it is expanding its original offerings, partnering with Liquid Comics to offer motion-comics. The two companies said they’ll make the first two titles — created by film directors Barry Sonnenfeld and Guy Ritchie — available online later this summer through Yahoo! Screen.

Motion comics blend elements of comic book art and animation, offering some movement and action but on a limited scale. It’s gained ground and popularity in recent years as publishers big and small experiment with the medium, which can viewed online or on devices like tablets and iPads.

“This is compelling content from great storytellers, and we are excited to be adding Liquid Comics to our robust slate of premium content partners,” said Erin McPherson, vice president and head of video for Yahoo.

Morgan Spurlock's feature Mansome, a documentary that takes a comedic look at male grooming habits, is heading to Yahoo as a new short-form web series. The new series, executive produced by Spurlock through Warrior Poets, Jason Bateman and Will Arnett through DumbDumb and Ben Silverman through Electus, will expand its scope to include other male-focused subjects such as sports and gadgets. The 55-year-old, who had spent years, developing Electric City, has finally decided to turn to Yahoo to stream the animated futuristic programme, which will premiere in the spring.

The Oscar winning actor is also lending his voice to a character in the show, about a peaceful city in a post-apocalyptic world.
