Young Americans has finally come together. Previously titled College Republicans and then Young Republicans, the film is based on true events from the 1970s and follows future political heavies Karl Rove and Lee Atwater “on a wild road-trip through the South all the way to the White House in a crash course of dirty tricks and politics.” According to Deadline, the movie now has the funding to go forward. Director John Krokidas will reteam with his Kill Your Darlings stars Daniel Radcliffe and Dane DeHaan, who will star as Atwater and Rove, respectively. The book, which is being used as a jumping off point for the big screen story described as The Hangover meets One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Daniel Radcliffe clearly had a blast making Kill Your Darlings (he said as much on our Podcast, which you can find lurking at the bottom of the page). So it makes sense that he’d be seriously considering a reunion with director John Krokidas and co-star Dane DeHaan for College Republicans. If it all comes together – and various representatives have denied that it’s a done deal to The Wrap – the film would see Radcliffe and DeHaan playing the young Lee Atwater and Karl Rove long before they became powerbrokers in American politics. It would also represent a resurgent level of interest in Wes Jones’ script, which hit the Black List back in 2010 and later attracted the interest of Richard Linklater and Paul Dano as director and star, but then went quiet. The story is based on real events from the 1970s and follows Rove (DeHaan) as he runs a...

Is it just me or is this the week of reunions? First, Jennifer Lawrence and David O. Russell, then, Liam Neeson and Martin Scorsese, and now, Dane DeHaan, Daniel Radcliffe and John Krokidas. Given Hollywood's focus more on things that go boom and sell toys, and less on dramas with human beings, it's probably not a total shock that "College Republicans" hasn't gained much traction since landing on the 2010 Black List. But the project is taking another swing at getting made, this time with a pair of compelling actors taking the starring roles. Radcliffe would play Lee Atwater and DeHaan stars as Karl Rove in the 1973-set film in which aspiring politician Rove runs a dirty campaign for national College Republican Chairman under the guidance of campaign manager Atwater (Radcliffe).
The pair go on a spirited road trip to drum up support for Rove's candidacy. Wes Jones wrote the script which ranked higher than the likes of "Argo" and "American Hustle" on the famed Black List.
Radcliffe's reps say he's not confirmed, the role is just one of several he's considering at this point. Shia Labeouf and Paul Dano were circling a previous version of the film.

For every movie that makes it all the way from someone's brain to the big screen, dozens are doomed to spend eternity in Hollywood purgatory — because, quite frankly, getting a major motion picture made is a total bitch.
Only a small fraction of screenplays ever catch the attention of a studio and get put into production, and as you'll see, even that is no guarantee they'll ever be finished. In the messy, ridiculously complicated and maddening process of getting movies made, sometimes even the best ideas slip through the cracks.

Given that he's one of the more diverse and prolific filmmakers out there, it's been a disappointingly long four years without a new movie from Richard Linklater ("Me and Orson Welles" premiered at Tiff in 2008). Fortunately, the Austin, Texas-based filmmaker is back with "Bernie," a dark comedy which reunites him with two of his most memorable leads, Jack Black and Matthew McConaughey, that has picked up strong reviews and, opening in limited release last Friday, has been performing surprisingly well at the box office.
With "Bernie" expanding wider this weekend (read our review), it seemed like the perfect time to look over Linklater's diverse and eclectic career. He'd already made his mark by founding the Austin Film Society in 1985 (which has gone on to be the center of the industy in the Texas city), but since his debut with an ultra-low-budget student film in 1988, Linklater's tackled everything from romance to...

One of director Richard Linklater’s first films, and his big breakthrough, was 1991’s Slacker, a movie about misfit young people in Austin, Texas. Many years and a storied film career later and Linklater finds himself aiming his focus at the youth set once again, but this time he’s looking at a decidedly different subset of the country’s up and comers. College Republicans is a biopic that follows the college careers of conservative political figures Karl Rove and Lee Atwater. Rove and Atwater are divisive figures to be sure, but even their most vicious critics would have to agree that slackers they are not. This might prove to be a chance for Linklater to change up his dreamy, slow moving storytelling style a bit and do something more kinetic and Social Network-y. College Republicans, written by Wes Jones, appeared on the 2010 Black List of best unproduced scripts in Hollywood, and...

Wes Jones' script College Republicans, a dramedy which centers on the early days of Republican strategist Karl Rove, made the Black List in 2010 and was soon rumored as a Richard Linklater film with Shia Labeouf possibly starring. Some things have changed, but it looks like the film is definitely going to happen. Rather than Shia taking the lead, it looks like Paul Dano will play the young Rove as he has some of his early experiences in national politics with Lee Atwater, who later became advisor and strategist to Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. The Wrap [1] says Dano is "officially attached" to play Rove, with the info coming from financing producer Maya Browne. The film will shoot in Austin in November, making it Linklater's immediate follow-up to his true-story murder comedy Bernie. The producer says the film ""is about when Karl Rove and Lee Atwater first met, which...

Paul Dano is attached to star as a young Karl Rove in Richard Linklater’s College Republicans, which is gearing up to shoot here in Austin, Texas this November.
The feature focuses on George W. Bush’s political strategist, Rove, as a college student vying for the coveted seat as chairman of the College Republican National Committee (Crnc). While Rove never actually received a college diploma, he did ultimately receive an official mandate from the eventual 43rd President, George H.W. Bush, after a tight, contentious election and a dirty campaign led by Bush Sr.’s strategist, political wunderkind Lee Atwater.
Rove and Atwater’s biographical road trip to drum up support — in a Ford Pinto, no less — is based on a script by Wes Jones that topped the 2010 Black List, an annual compilation of Hollywood’s most-liked screenplays. We gave the script high marks last year as the buzz grew...

Paul Dano is getting into politics — on the silver screen, that is. The "Little Miss Sunshine" star is spreading his dramedy wings to take on the lead role in the soon-to-shoot "College Republicans."
Helmed by Richard Linklater (of "Before Sunset" fame), the flick tells the story of the completely sketchy controversial young Karl Rove as he vies for the position of chief campus conservative under the guidance of Lee Atwater, who acts as Rove's campaign manager.
In case you've been living under a rock for the last 20 years, Rove is the somewhat unpopular (to put it nicely) politico who has worked behind the scenes for a staggering number of equally unpopular conservative leaders, most notably George H. W. Bush and his son.
Wes Jones' script first gathered some momentum when it landed on the 2010 Black List of top unproduced screenplays, but it's taken nearly a year to nail down...

Having already played a creepy, semi-charismatic practitioner of fanatical and manipulative gospel in "There Will Be Blood," Paul Dano should be well prepared to take on his new role.
According to The Wrap, Dano will play Karl Rove in a new film from director Richard Linklater called "College Republicans." Written by Wes Jones, the film will be about, "when Karl Rove and Lee Atwater first met, which is when Karl Rove ran for president of the College Republicans, and that's when they sort of discovered dirty tricks," producer Maya Browne said.
Rove later became George W. Bush's top political strategist, charting out his rise to the Presidency, many of his presidential decisions, and his re-election campaign. Bush affectionately referred to him as Turd Blossom.
It'll be a change of pace for Linklater, who is known for his romances "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset," alt films "Slacker" and "Dazed and Confused,...

Paul Dano has been lucky enough to appear in some great films at a young age — including There Will Be Blood and Meek’s Cutoff – and now is stepping into the shoes of Karl Rove. TheWrap is reporting that he’ll play George W. Bush‘s senior advisor in College Republicans, a new film from Richard Linklater. Written by Wes Jones, the Black List script follows, according to producer Maya Browne, the time “when Karl Rove and Lee Atwater first met, which is when Karl Rove ran for president of the College Republicans, and that’s when they sort of discovered dirty tricks.”
For those who don’t know, Lee Atwater ended up serving as the Chairman of the Republican National Committee, and also advised Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush during their respective times as President. Shia Labeouf was apparently interested in taking the lead at one point; Browne...

Exclusive Paul Dano is officially attached to play one of the most notorious political operatives in recent American history -- a young Karl Rove -- in "College Republicans," TheWrap has learned. Richard Linklater, who has directed "Slacker" and "Dazed and Confused," is attached to direct. Karl Rove is easily one of the most polarising figures ever to (dis)grace American politics. The man who worked for Richard Nixon and George Hw Bush and helped get George W Bush elected president is a lightning rod for both celebration and scorn. And now his early years as a political manipulator are going to be explored by Richard Linklater in College Republicans, with There Will Blood’s Paul Dano playing the younger Rove.Wes Jones’s script, which landed on the 2010 Black List, follows Rove and fellow political thinker Lee Atwater (who would go on to advise Presidents Reagan and Bush as well as being chairman of the Republican National Committee) when they first meet after Rove drops out of the University of Utah to take a position with the College Republican National Committee. Atwater managed his campaign when Rove opted to run for national chairman of the Committee.

You may not know the name Wes Jones yet, but if his success continues, the screenwriter may become as well known as say, Allan Loeb ("Wall Street 2"), Aline Brosh McKenna ('The Devil Wears Prada"), Diablo Cody ("Juno"), or some of the other well-known now-established scribes who were scrappy up-and-comers a few years ago (super relative of course, not everyone knows these name compared to say Paddy Chayefsky, even then...we digress...). Jones is coming off a hit screenplay even before its been made. His most recent script, "College Republicans" which chronicles the nascent political career of Karl Rove (Shia Labeouf…...

Last month, we told you which scripts had made 2010’s Black List. Compiled every year by Hollywood insiders, the Black List is a list of the “most liked” or “best” unproduced scripts circling Hollywood. The script that got the most votes last year is called College Republicans and was written by Wes Jones. Republicans tracks aspiring politician Karl Rove’s dirty campaign for College Republican chairman. While that project hasn’t gone into production yet, Jones is currently busy pitching his next project called The Epic of Troy Night, and it’s a doozy. I’ll let 24 Frames explain the plot: “It's about a man seeking his love in a fantasy-world New York that's been plunged into a blackout — all while he's looked after by a set of 'Clash of the Titans'-esque rulers who play chess with the universe.” A bit out there, no? 24 Frames describes it as a “fantasy-comedy-existential-romance.

Wizards, zombies and Jackie Kennedy star on list of finest films you didn't see this year
Fancy catching a taut drama about Jackie Kennedy's fight to preserve JFK's legacy in the seven days immediately following his death? Or perhaps a romantic comedy with the legendary title: Your Bridesmaid is a Bitch? Both stories could well find their names into cinemas, along with another 74, after making it on to the 2010 "Black List" of the best unproduced screenplays in Hollywood.
This year's list was revealed yesterday by its compiler, film executive Franklin Leonard. It consists of the screenplays which a team of more than 300 movie producers most liked but that did not end up making it into cinemas by the end of the year. "The Black List is a snapshot of the collective taste of the people who develop, produce, and release theatrical feature films in the Hollywood studio system and the mainstream independent system,...

This year's list was compiled from the suggestions of 290 film executives, each of whom picked up to ten of their favorite scripts. Since the list started in 2004, many screenplays ended up being turned into films. In 2005, two of the top three scripts were "Lars and the Real Girl" which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay Oscar, and "Juno" which actually won the Oscar. The Black List started in 2005 when Franklin Leonard was working for Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company. Leonard was getting drowned in sub-par spec scripts, so he sent an e-mail out to his industry contacts looking for the best unproduced scripts out there. The 2005 Black List and the 2006 Black List were undeniably important in getting a fresh batch of writers on the Hollywood scene. Since then, too many people know about the party and the studio system has learned that people are paying attention. That means that increasingly, scripts have been lobbied into the Black List. [Note: I have no actual evidence I would be able to share, disclose or show you that proves this, so file that assertion under: "Things Dave thinks and gets to write because he's squatted on that soapbox long enough to get squatter's rights."]This year: the majority of the Black List Top Ten has already been sold or optioned. I'm not sure how helpful it is to make a list of good In Production scripts. Certainly less helpful to writer's churning out material that keeps getting passed over (or people who have Not starred in Prison Break...
