It's okay

Warning: Spoilers
Squid Girl is a show I consider to have potential, but doesn't really do as much with it as it could. Indeed there are some very funny jokes and some very nice character arcs, but at the same time there are more holes in the story than Swiss Cheese, a ton of unanswered questions, it gives into Anime traits just a few too many times, and a lot of jokes that could have worked if they'd had a bit more development.

So what's the mish-mash? Angered by the pollution of the oceans, Squid Girl comes to the surface and attempts to invade the land and conquer humanity. Unfortunately her first obstacle, a Beach Bar, proves to be more than a match for her as the customers and bar staff don't take her the least bit seriously. In an attempt to prove she is a world dominating Squid, she accidentally puts a hole in the wall of the Bar and is forced into work so as to pay off the damage, all while meeting a selection of colourful, but all very odd characters.

As mentioned, with a premise like that this could be the most brutally funny thing you ever did see, but instead it is rather underwhelming, and there's a lot of questions you find yourself asking about the characters that do remove you from the situation.

For starters, why is Squid Girl a girl? It's never explained! She's a human girl in a white/blue dress with Squid tentacles for hair, and that's your lot! Although other Squid are shown throughout the series which look like regular Squid, she's just human! Is she a hybrid? Can she change form to become human? Were her parents...?

Anyway, she comes to the surface to enslave humanity, yet she constantly gets distracted and ends up delivering food and drink orders even before she's been forced into labour. Not to make a cruel joke, but I feel she may have an Attention Disorder.

Other characters include three siblings, Eiko, Chizuru and Takeru. Eiko I consider the most normal character because she's frequently confused by Squid Girl and indeed everyone else's antics, as well as violently losing her temper every five minutes when Squid Girl goes out of line. Chizuru is the quiet eldest sibling who for some reason has the power to travel at the speed of light and may or may not have an underlying psychotic streak. Takeru is the younger brother who tries to play around with Squid Girl, but she has absolutely none of it.

Aside from the trio, there's Gorō, a butch lifeguard who secretly has the hots for Chizuru, a trio of American scientists who want to experiment on Squid Girl, and Sanae, a neighbourhood friend of Eiko who forms a rather sporadic lesbian relationship with Squid Girl, often being beaten down and painfully thrown away in response.

Again, this could be the funniest thing ever, but a lot of the jokes do fall flat because they're not followed through enough. At the same time the stories, while funny, can be inconsistent, and sometimes earth-shatteringly annoying, as is the case with the Mini- Squid Girl episodes which drive me mental. Also, the series does fall into the same trap as many Anime series, where it literally takes 5 to 10 minutes out so as to indulge the animator's racy side, and sometimes entire episodes such as those involving Sanae's unhealthy sadomasochistic relationship with Squid Girl.

But there are many good points to this series. The animation is top notch, the art style is cute and fun, the characters, though unrelatable at times, are funny to watch, but on the whole there are a few too many questions you find yourself asking that take you out of it.

Would I recommend it? Yes, I'd say give it a watch, because at the end of the day it's still a funny show, Lord knows it got a fair few laughs out of me!

Fun!

This show is very funny, wholesome, and incredibly weird. It was a lot of fun binge watching this. I genuinely like these characters and I would say they're never inconsistent in terms of behavior and mindset. It's always good when characters are consistent even when the show isn't lore heavy. I would definitely recommend this show to anyone who loves animation, sitcoms, and anime in general. Speaking of which, before I wrap up this review I just need to express how much I absolutely loved the animation. It never feels as though any frames are missing in movement sequences. It's very nice to look at and the art style is great as well. They really went all in on the cute and big-eyed characters.

A squidtastic anime!
Tweekums1 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
While 'Squid Girl' is clearly aimed at young viewers it is a lot of fun for all ages; the series follows the adventures of the eponymous Squid Girl as she seeks to conquer the surface world in revenge for humanity's mistreatment of the oceans. Her invasion doesn't get very far; before she has even got off the beach she accidentally damages a beach café and finds herself working in the 'Lemon Beach House' to pay for the damage. Strangely nobody there seems scared of her, probably because she looks almost human, the only obvious sign of her squiddiness is the fact that she has long blue tentacles instead of hair. At the café she makes friends with the owners Eiko and her sister Chizuru, she also meets Sanae, a local girl who has a bit of a crush on her and Nagisa who is her favourite as she is the only person she meets who is afraid of her! The only threat to her comes from a group of scientists led by American Cindy Campbell who wish to experiment on her as they think he is an alien; however their level of competence means they are of little danger to her and serve to provide a few laughs.

Each episode consists of three short stories where Squid Girl has adventures with her new friends; most of these are normal activities for people but seem exciting to Squid Girl. These adventures aren't all fun for her; for example she didn't enjoy it when she was expected to provide vast quantities of squid ink to flavour noodles and was terrified when she saw an inflatable killer whale toy! This series was very cute and a lot of fun; it contained plenty of laughs but more importantly kept me smiling from start to finish. I really liked all of the characters especially Squid Girl herself. The animation was good and the she spoke inserting the words 'squid' and 'ink' into other words added to its cuteness. It is a shame that the series was only twelve episodes long as when it finished I was left wanting to see more.

A really funny anime

Warning: Spoilers
This anime is pretty much about a girl who was born with tentacles for hair that goes by the name squid girl comes to surface to invide mankind but ends up living with a family of 2 sisters by the name Chizuru and Aiko and their brother Takeru. She learns how about humans live up to surfaces and makes many new friends.

This anime overall is some good light hearted fun, I am not too sure why someone compared it to Mighty B considering they are nothing alike. The characters are fun and pretty likeable one you get to know them.

While there is a bit of blood and mild language it's a pretty good anime that a young audiance could watch and a good anime for beginners.

If you want something that is light hearted I recommend this.

The Anti-Mighty B

The first time I watched this show I immediately felt that I liked it. The show does a excellent to good job balancing the tween pounding aspects with the comedy aspects like that Star Vs. The Forces of Evil series on Disney XD and it felt that the writers of the show managed to keep every episode move steadily along without dragging on too much. I honestly think that this show does have a chance to do better along the way like Sailor Moon and One Piece did, since they became TV hits despite the fact that some fans of both hated their first English Dub. Hopefully after the character refence in Splatoon, All that will change.

the first non-Shonen anime I ever watched, and it was great

Squid girl is a very cute protagonist, the plots of the episodes are a little bland, but Squid Girl's personality makes these bland activities unique. I would highly recommend this anime. Its pretty family friendly, cute and something that I think anyone can relate to.
