Great premise, bad execution, terrible characters
terrylarosa2 February 2023
Hoping for better and expecting worse. The premise is good though hardly original but there the good part ends. I have to wonder if after watching the finished product the creators looked at each other and said " Hey this is some good stuff ". They must have because somehow this is now a tv show.. the sets look like they were filmed at a high school, the acting and CGI are subpar but not awful. Where the show truly fails is the characters. Remember the pilot of Lost and TWD where you were quickly invested in the characters? Definitely not here. Nobody stands out . I guarantee that after this you'll never hear from 80% of these actors again. A couple veteran actors would have gone a long way but nope; just a bunch of uninteresting faces. A strong lead would have helped too. The characters are not particularly whiny and a couple worked well together but I don't remember a single name. Will be flabbergasted if this gets a second season.

Not actually that bad.
blueskyy_ng10 February 2023
Yes, there were lots of plot holes. Yes, the CGI was bad. That's all true... But if you're looking for simple storytelling, this show is definitely enjoyable enough for you to pass your time with.

It's much better than the new Saved by the Bell, or the new Gossip Girl if you want my honest opinion, and even those shows had positive reviews. What about Will Trent? Does it have anything interesting, or intelligent? Yet, it has a strong following too.

For a non-sophisticated person like myself, I would give this show a few more episodes before declaring that it's moronic and beyond redemption.

And to that someone(s) citing Newton's First Law of Motion, if you have to travel like a million lightyears, relying just on inertia alone isn't gonna take you anywhere, you'll need thrust (for both the speed and navigation).

Getting better
iagbo4524 February 2023
The premise is interesting, though I've seen this idea before. The first episode wasn't very good because of poor acting. But we've continued to watch it (finished 4 episodes so far) and I have say it's both growing on me and the acting is better - most of the actors are growing into their characters and becoming more believable, and evoking my own emotions such as finding some likeable, some irritating. I was glued to my seat during episode 3 and worried about what was going to happen next. The crew seems to be in one crisis after another, which can be tiresome as a continuous plot device. I am being entertained now, though I can't give it more than a 6 at this point.

The Martian, but for morons
Bulsajo2 February 2023
At least that's what it feels like, 15 minutes into the first episode. Anyone looking for the next Expanse or For All Mankind will likely be disappointed. As for plot and characters, cliche-riddled doesn't even begin to describe it. I really don't want to waste any more time reviewing it but I'm short of characters so I'll send out a plea- why doesn't anyone start with some solid material? Where is my Cyteen/company wars/merchanters series? Why can't anyone remake The Lathe of Heaven that does the source material justice? Uplift wars? Well of Souls? Hee Chee and the event horizon? Rendezvous with Rama? The Incal? And then the powers that be cancel Pantheon.

Young Adults are not stupid.
TiberiusJ2 February 2023
A decent budget has clearly been wasted on a terrible story with a great premise. The script is so patronizing to the target audience with all the cliche high school characters and hackneyed villains. These people have been chosen for a mission crucial to humanity's survival and were selected from hundreds of thousands of applicants and passed rigorous testing and training and yet they behave like naughty brats in the schoolyard. It reminds me of the mass produced flash cartoons of the 2000's.

A lost opportunity for the show creators who went for a committee designed, safe option, resulting in something that watches like you've already seen it and were not impressed the first time.

GLAD I STUCK WITH IT
ganthonystx1 April 2023
Like a lot of reviews listed here, I was not impressed with the first couple of episodes (bad acting, bad plot, bad f/x, etc.), but I stuck it out, and am glad I did. The characters have developed nicely, not every episode is "disaster of the week," and subplots are intriguing. I've begun to care about the characters, which is a 180 flip from when I first started watching.

It's always tough to figure out how good/bad a show is going to be after the first episode; especially with a large cast. But the writers have done a good job with creating depth, and some surprises along the way.

As a sci-fi show, the f/x are minimal and middle of the road CG; just enough to let you know it's a show in space.

The Ark is not great, but is getting better with each episode.

I am not alone!!
thejdrage2 February 2023
First off - I was REALLY looking forward to this show for a long time. I watched a bit of it ........ And then a bit more - and finally put on the mute button to read the reviews. And I thought, oh my God, am I going to be the only person who thinks this sucks pond water?

Nope.

The one thing no one else addressed that caught my eye as ludicrous was their 'meal plan' - putting a small, beautifully embossed box, on a full size tray that you'd find in a school cafeteria for a meal. I had to check it out a couple of times to make sure it was a dumb as I thought. It was.

If there is a theme to this program it is exactly that - things are so flagrantly Dumb.

I'm not, so won't be watching anymore of this sad show.

Agreed, Poor man's "The 100". But quite ENJOYABLE and worth giving a shot.
RjNeel30 March 2023
I'm surprised by the barrage of negative reviews. I binged the first 9 episodes and found the show quite interesting. Everyone is respectfully entitled to their opinion, and to be fair, "the Ark" does have MANY FLAWS. Of course, the show's premise of a journey to a new world is not exactly original. Storytelling-wise, it's no BSG or the Expanse, and the CGI is hardly anything to boast about, but when did Scifi shows reduce to just CGI? It's a limited-budget show, and they had to improvise in many areas. Given the constraints, the frugal yet efficient use of resources and execution of a fine script is worthy of applause.

The casting is alright. Of course, the show is lite on big stars, and the character development is disappointing. Almost every scene is crowded, and individual characters or their backstories are seldom or shabbily explored. Therefore, it's tough for the audience to connect to any character. In fact, many storylines are rushed. Garnet's sister or Eva's initial lover served no purpose at all.

However, not all is negative. The banter between the cast is HILARIOUS, each crisis is uniquely designed to THRILL the audiences and the show's central MYSTERY is wrapped neatly. Overall, the show holds a lot of promise. The bad reviews may be due to the initial few episodes, which were agreeably underwhelming. But the show does get better. It's unfair to discard the show hurriedly.

With Syfy, series renewals can be tricky. The low budget is a positive for season 2, but the bad reviews might sink the show. Interestingly, while not great, the viewership is higher than some other shows that were renewed. If it does get renewed, I hope for better characterization, dialogues, and a whole lot better science (currently, the science is laughable and totally understandable if that's what is contributing to low ratings).

Getting pretty good
Hopstimop19 March 2023
Yes, it is a cheaply produced show, but all the culture snobs who write reviews after 15 minutes watching the pilot are simply that: unreliable snobs who have no clue about anything and you shouldn't listen to.

The show's characters are loveble enough to keep watching the first few episodes.

At latest in the 5th episode it starts getting interesting and at the 7th episode the mytery is pretty exciting to wait eagerly for the next episode.

This show at least doesn't try to pretend being an oscar winning drama by getting into politics and intrigues "in medias res", making you just turning your head around, wondering who is with whom. You also don't need 3 seasons to watch for finally learning to distinguish the two asian women from eachother, like so many shows do nowadays, like Star Trek Discovery or Star Wars Andor, just to name a few from the sci-fi genre.

This is a show for relaxing. It doesn't want to change the world nor tries to win anything, it just wants to entertain you and it does the job well.

Give It a Chance.
nightringer-768402 March 2023
First episode, The Ark looked like an adaptation of a Japanese anime mixed with Lost. But later on, The Ark took a more dramatic turn and becoming enjoyable as a mystery-suspense-space drama. With a lot of characters in play, it was becoming a guilty pleasure.

Mostly filled with unknown actors, the assembled Ark One crews showed potential for next season, at least. Too many secrets with too many disasters means a good potential to explore, a good amount of possibilities it could go to. Kinda reminds me of Supernatural when they started.

The producer and creator of The Ark is certainly a name to reckon in showbiz, Dean Devlin. Devlin almost always good with disaster flicks, so give it a chance guys, who knows you'll like it. It's not Star Trek nor the biih budgeted Disney's Star Wars, but certainly a different look on space adventure drama.

I was entertained.
michaeleshelman8 February 2023
This is not meant to be a hard hitting, realistic, edge of your seat big budget blockbuster with gritty plots, and top of the line cg. I was entertained without any anxiety or stress. I thought it was a fun and easy to watch sci-fi adventure. The set up of the characters leaves plenty of openings for adventures and plots twists, challenges and feel good victories. There will some drama, some lighthearted storylines, and some romance. Have you seen any of Dean Devlin's shows? Leverage, The Librarians, The Outpost? They are fun, easy going, with a little flash bang action with a variety of characters to develope. Relax Gene Siskel. Just grab a snack and have some pg-13 fun. Then go to bed, the alarm and the real world come early in the morning.

blightseed2 February 2023
I have no idea how this got greenlit they seem to have no budget. Just not good. Shows that came out 10 years ago had better CGI than this does, I can't help but draw parallel to Stargate universe similar kind of idea stranded on a ship that's broken and falling apart the only difference is universe did it way better looked better with better actors over 10 years ago. Pass for me.

Well I guess my review was too short and I need to add a few more characters so I guess I'll just say it's still a terrible show terrible CGI acting is not great I hope their checks cleared. I'd be shocked if this gets a second season.

Not worth my time
ikata-494172 February 2023
The Ark is another abysmal show from the modern "entertainment" industry. It started with several minutes of annoying loud noise (mute inspiring rather than exciting), and then the cast started talking, which was essentially quieter annoying noise. The characters were dull, shallow, stereotypes and the dialogue was inane babble used to point out the mystery boxes. This show sounds like it was written by Jr. High kids who flunked creative writing. It's the typical and uninteresting formula of mystery boxes + social drama + CGI that comprises almost every show these days. Stupid, boring, and not worth my time. This show is horrible.

I really did want to like this series
Mccadoo1 May 2023
Warning: Spoilers
At first it was ok. Yes, the cast was a bunch of unknown actors, some of whom really do need additional acting classes, ok, most of them actually. And yes, the effects were not great, nor where the sets, or the characterizations....

But I really did want to like it because I love science fiction stories and there's been so much bad sci-fi lately, some really bad sci-fi actually (La Brea???). So I watched the entire run hoping it would develop and find it's feet. It really didn't but at least it didn't get too much worse...not too much.

The acting unfortunately did get worse as the show went along, especially among some key characters, the actress playing the head of engineering for one. And her eventual love interest, the Scottish bad boy too. And then we have one of the all time most annoying characters I've ever seen anywhere in the young female genius with the big glasses and trouble shutting up. Every time she was on screen, and she was on screen a lot, I would cringe. And the annoyance level just kept going up as the actress seemed to really embrace all the bad points of her character. The fact that she's not a very good actress didn't help. I'd find myself staring at the screen and thinking "for the love of God just stop talking!!!".

The writing was bad throughout as well. The basic premise was fine, if already done to death. But the writers kept coming up with implausible and sometimes laughable dangers that the crew would treat like impending doom each time and then deal with much too easily and oft times again, implausibly. Usually in the last few minutes of an episode. It got formulaic, then it got silly, then it got predictable and annoying.

But I think the final insult, the thing that would prevent me from watching another season of this train wreck (if there is one which I doubt), was the final episode. The acting reached an all time low and the cheese fest among the main characters was almost unwatchable. Sworn enemies became friends, all peril was dealt with, usually in a quick and extremely lame way. I was waiting for them all to join hands and break into an inspirational song.

They seemed to both wrap things up and also leave things open for another season at the end. I have no idea how they did in the ratings; I doubt there will be a second season but hey, who knows, La Brea got a second season and that has to be one of the worst television series ever produced, by anyone, anywhere. So who knows. But I don't think the Ark will be back and I doubt we'll see most of the cast again either. With many of them that will be a good thing; young science genius chick I'm looking at you. I wish them well though and hope they're all able to find gainful employment elsewhere.

Flops harder than Nemo out of water.
nick-m-green3 February 2023
You've read some reviews where people refer to the CGI as bad. This is true. You've also heard that the acting is sub par, which is also true. The biggest "oof", as it were, is also in the writing of the show, not just the character interactions, but the characters themselves, and the science.

The show goes out of its way to sort of establish a set of rules for the space that the people here inhabit, how life functions, and so forth, then 5 minutes later they break those rules. Science all of a sudden doesn't matter, and it is all about resolving whatever issue it is that they are experiencing while creating even more chaos.

These people are also supposed to be highly skilled in the fields that they work in, but 99% of the time they behave like high-schoolers. Their actions makes no sense at all.

Nothing in this show is realistic, nothing makes any sense. It is all rush-rush-rush, survive, argue, technical mumbo-jumbo word vomit, and magical skills.

I felt thoroughly frustrated throughout the first episode. Vehemently shaking my head whilst shouting at my screen.

It isn't worth the trouble, nor the dissatisfaction that you will experience.

Better Than Average
Astaroth225 March 2023
As it now stands, this series is underrated. Since I am very tough when I rate something, I sincerely do not understand all the hate it has been getting. While it's certainly not a high budget endeavor, they clearly make the most of it. Next, there are plenty of mysteries to keep one's interest while attempting to figure them out. The characters are both likable and unlikeable, simultaneously, which is another interesting draw; the investment leading one to find out which side they ultimately land.

Frankly, I'll stick with an average show basically because there's so little out there that's any good nowadays. But this is something I'm not just watching to kill time. I'm guessing those giving a rock bottom low rating watched the first episode and bailed before giving it the time it deserves. Definitely not a "10" but much better than the current rating [4.0] indicates.

In the end, I believe I already know what the big twist will be. I won't spoil it, but I'm never wrong when it comes to these things. For those who keep watching you'll see that I'm right.

Yet more morons in space
verminhater14 June 2023
Once again a vastly expensive spaceship is crewed by the most dysfunctional reprobates that could be dredged up. Time after time we see this hackneyed format. I'd love to see a competent crew just once.

On top of that there's the comedically low budget with tracksuits for spacesuits and "helmets" that require a false sealing sound to be played on each use. Add in the budget cgi too. To round it off some parts of the ship have magic gravity.

I could live with the low cost production if I wasn't treated to the moronic crew aspect. I appreciate it's harder to write a good story around a competent crew so find a writer that can and pay them instead of this formulaic repeat.

Ok. I decided I like it!
CreeCart10 March 2023
I first rated this show at three out of ten and then I changed my rating to seven out of ten and now I have changed my rating to ten out of ten. I have watched episodes one through five twice already and I just watched episode six. I love the mystery and the suspense! I love the comedy as well! Please keep up the good work writers , actors, producers, SYFY Channel and everyone involved. It will be nice to have a science fiction show to watch that does not have foul, vulgar words inserted into every sentence spoken. I have wanted to see a science fiction show where I could feel empathy for the characters and root for them to make it to their destination and beyond. I also read that the writers wrote out the first 12 episodes so they knew where the show was heading from the first episode. I always thought, "why don't the writers and producers and creators map out the entire series from beginning to end? And then the networks must sign a contract for the shows that they want, ensuring that the show will not be cancelled until the last episode?" If actors can't continue their roles, they just replace the character with a new actor(explaining that, "the character of so and so will now be played by so and so 2.") And if something occurs in real life don't let it enter into the plot of the show.(unless of course your filming location is destroyed, then find a similar filming location.)

A little cheesy
jack_e-250426 February 2023
At first I was sure I'd last about 20 minutes but by the end of the first episode I decided it needed further review and will give it a few more episodes before giving up. Actually the cast seems to be trying so hard that I want it to succeed. Sure it isn't big budget and has a bit of crappy acting/writing but it does have potential to be worth a season. I watched the Orville and liked it and that was basically cheesy on purpose. This is a more somber space show so far on the level of lost in space reboot with the intent to show us how important this mission is to save their families from a crumbling earth. In todays world it may not be so far fetched.

Big oof
sztypft2 February 2023
I'm was genuinely looking forward to this show but wow how quickly can your hopes be shattered. Could have been something great but instead we've been giving something terrible. With the level of CGI and quality sci-fi currently available I'm surprised this was even made.

Why would someone think that this was an acceptable show to have given the green light too, surely someone watched it 1st?

The Expanse was a lesson on how to make sci-fi this should be a lesson on how not too.

The 1st 5 minutes give you the feeling that it's going to be good the nothing.

Simply put this is terrible and should be avoided.

Don't trust the bad reviews.
rosanna-833359 March 2023
So many of the bad reviews didn't give it a chance. They watched 1 rpisode (sometimes not even that).

Sure the first episode did seem a bit underwhelming but if you just give it chance, you will see that it gets much better. The characters develop and becoming likable.

It's a bit seen before but I really enjoy it. Its an easy watch and it's nice yo have a new space show.

There are intrigues and they have yo solve life threatening situations each episode.

The acting is pretty good. The characters are believable. The dialogues could be improved on and some of tge imagery seems not quite realistic.

Not bad SYFY Channel
teslaman-3215513 February 2023
Not bad for the SYFY channel. It looks like they were trying to replace The Expanse with another less expensive space drama. It's probably not fair to compare this series to The Expanse and so far the storyline in the first two episodes is just mediocre but does have potential with a murder mystery, something weird found at the impact site and many characters appear to be hiding something. The acting is OK, a few characters even stand out like Stacey Read's character. The Ark will probably satisfy most space opera & science fiction fans, but the next few episodes will tell if they can appeal to or retain a larger viewing audience.

There's so much b..b..ba..bad
Unwavering-116 June 2023
I watched all of season 1 because people kept telling me "it gets better", "it gets better." I suppose they were right, because originally my rating was one star and it got itself to a 4 by the end.

There is just so much bad. The acting is horrible and while some might blame that on the writing, I blame it on the actors. Don't get me wrong though, the writing is far worse. The CGI could be better, but it's passable for TV.

Every episode is predictable because there are no original ideas on this show. Well, the ship full of mid 20 somethings that are all at the "top of their fields" yet somehow have the maturity of preteens, is pretty original I guess.

Here's the thing that shows you that not only are the writers terrible, but so is the director(s); almost every main character has a nervous stutter. Sharon the clone, nervous stutter. Alicia, the most annoying character ever, nonstop nervous stutter. Angus, the oblivious plant guy, nervous stutter only second to Alicia. The female Doogie Howser with a drug problem, Dr. Karik, nervous stutter. The future influencer bimbo Cat, nervous stutter. The greatest engineer ever, Ava, nervous stutter. Even Trust, the genius savior of humanity, nervous stutter. I almost wanted to rewatch the entire season to make sure I hadn't missed anyone. Why do the writers think this is believable? How does a director not notice that every scene they're directing has someone stuttering like an idiot? How is this realistic?

I'm a glutton for punishment, so I'll probably check out season 2 to see if they improve anything, but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Back to school for writers
caspichs30 May 2023
I will be quite short. First two episodes were more or less fine. Not great, but fine.

But then it became obvious, that writers missed all classes or never heard anything about biology, chemistry, physics or astronomy. It is not acceptable to fail so miserably in science, if you want to create decent sci-fi show. I will not go into details, but errors are so primitive it hurts.

The plot twists are interesting at first, but in combination with nonsense when it comes to science, it gets annoying.

The characters are so cliché. No, really.

All in all - in only six episodes I went from "interesting" to "Jesus, I can't take it anymore". I see no future for this show.

What a low-rent disaster
yooniverse2 February 2023
Ugh. Where do I begin?!? If only the low-budget production was the only problem. The cast seems like they chose the first 20 or so people in the line for a casting call looking for woke teens. The story is a mashup of sci-fi tropes that required no imagination by the writers. The screenwriters and producers should be ashamed.

The story begins with the usual cryo-sleep crew being awakened by--yes, you guessed it--a calamity that strikes the ship in mid-journey. Of course, that wakes up one of them who wakes up the others. The senior crew members are lost in the accident, and now they are stranded on the ship to fend for themselves. Sounds familiar? Done a million times over.

This show needs to be canceled quickly, and the airtime recovered.
