Where was Doctor Corder?
wilvram27 October 2013
I don't know much about Edgar Wallace's original novel, not one of his better known works, but given its alternative title, The Gaol Breakers, it doesn't seem likely it had much connection with what is on offer here. Alva is the vicious and controlling wife of a civil airline pilot, she also has a phobia about bees. With a whole casebook of psychological problems, she would have been more at home in an episode of The Human Jungle under the guidance of Herbert Lom's Dr. Roger Corder, a series that was wrapping up at about the time this film was shot. Like many British second features, it has some good acting and Faith Brook is excellent as Alva, bringing out her vulnerability and evoking some sense of pity for an otherwise deeply unlikeable character. Sadly there is very little suspense and tension and far too much talk, so for a thriller it's not very thrilling.

Faith Brook was the daughter of pre war star Clive Brook. She never attained the heights attained by her father, nevertheless she had a solid career. This film centres around the deranged character played by Brooks, who wants to destroy everything in her path.Whilst her character is interesting the plot is not.It certainly does not come within the definition of mystery.Disappointing.

Warning: Spoilers
I don't want to "destroy" this item, but I really don't see where the crime element is in this tale of a woman on the edge, jealous of her husband, who want him to quit flying - he is a pilot - makes trouble with her neighbour about bees and let the audience expect something that never happens. But it is not uninteresting after all, just gives you a weird feeling after seeing it. Not bad indeed but, again, what is the purpose to have made it for Edgard Wallace Mystery series? The plot keeps you awake, be sure of it. You can watch this movie, but don't expect a thriller or crime film as we often see in this TV series.

The director made some good stuff, look out for his filmography.

A great set-up for murder let down by a weak twist.

Warning: Spoilers
She's one of the most fun shrewish wives I've ever seen in the movies, and gets set up for one of the grizzliest deaths ever on film, but someone had to come in and ruin it all. Faith Brook is grasping and demanding, wanting her pilot husband Maurice Kaufmann to give up his career to be at her side to cater to her every demands.

She harasses the maid, a visiting relative and even the nurse at the hospital who's taking care of her husband when it appears that he's gotten ill because of her constant demands. In fact, they way she stands over him at the hospital is like watching a scorpion standing over something it's just stung, waiting for it to die in agony.

There's a great build-up to the scene where Brook is on her death bed, and then everyone's gathered together to hear the detective's report. I wanted to scream at the screen like Kathy Bates did about the old serial as to the ridiculous twist which is supposed to make the viewer feel sorry for Brooks. It completely ruined the film which could have gotten an 8/10 from me had they resolved it correctly.
