The car chase on the 376 Parkway in Pittsburgh was filmed in under 4 hours. Cinematographer Matt Meehan strapped an HVX-200 to the top of a vehicle to achieve certain shots. Other angles were filmed by Tom Getty hanging out a side window, leaning down just inches away from the pavement at a speed of 70 MPH.

Tom Getty wrote and directed this movie while attending the University of Pittsburgh from Fall 2008 to Spring 2010. It was shot over weekends and vacations. None of the actors have any formal training with acting.
The scene where Noah Wilson emerges from the lake was actually shot in Tom Getty's pool against a green screen dropped in the water. It took 20 takes to get the effect right.
The idea for "Emulation" came to Tom Getty when he was sitting in a movie theater waiting for the film Death Sentence (2007) to begin. It was during the trailer for Michael Clayton (2007) that it occurred to him, "It wouldn't be very much fun to live in a movie. Too hectic."
