I've seen worse with more stars.
dannyreyntiens4 June 2021
I don't think it was made to get awards. And you shouldn't go into it, thinking it did.

Everyone, especially Gary Cole, seem to be having a great time and it transfers over to the viewer. Well for me it did. I enjoyed watching it and was more entertained by this film than I do with most modern comedies. The only problem that I can see is that it doesn't know whether it want's to be a vampire spoof or just a vampire comedy or a teen vampire comedy.

I guess sorority girls really do suck...
paul_haakonsen7 August 2013
Well, this wasn't no Bram Stoker's "Dracula", nor was it (luckily) not a Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight" either. This movie was sort of a light-hearted romantic comedy with just a hint of horror, oh, and with vampires.

The story is about a college professor named Wayne Gretzky (played by Adam Johnson) who becomes enthralled with the new student to his class Chris Keller (played by Julie Gonzalo). They start to have a relationship, but it turns out that they have more in common than just a mutual attraction. And the fact that Wayne is a vampire also does tend to prove somewhat of an issue in matters of the heart.

I will say that the storyline was fairly straight forward, however, it wasn't particularly an impressive or overly interesting storyline. And what kept the movie afloat was the use of comedy throughout the movie. Mind you, it is not the kind of comedy that will have you laughing hard and in tears, but it is the kind that worked well enough and was just subtle enough to peak its funny head.

It should be noted, however, that the people hired for the various roles and characters were actually doing good jobs with the roles and characters that they were given. It was just the script that proved somewhat of a ball and chain around their ankles.

In overall, then "Vamp U" is a movie that is intended for a young teenage girl audience, and it doesn't really offer much for others in the audience, as this movie is a no brainer from start to end.

Could have been more, but it catered to a teenage girl audience.

Uneven but fairly fun at its best; at its worst...
I_Ailurophile20 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think the production design is solid, and in its fundamental craft the movie is well made. The costume design, and hair and makeup work, are genuinely terrific. The blood and gore are swell, as well as other contributions of all those behind the scenes. I like the cast, and I think the joint direction of filmmakers Maclain Nelson and Matt Jespersen is swell - especially not least since, for both, this marked their first full-length feature as writers or directors.

The writing is where things get a lot more murky.

At its best: I'll say this, it's not every comedy (let alone horror comedy) that can actually make me laugh, and if nothing else is true about 'Vamp U,' it manages just that. The humor is definitely uneven, though. Where the writing focuses on absent-minded vampire Wayne Gretzky, slightly oblivious Chris, or the good doctor Arthur Levine, the jokes and gags are consistently enjoyable. Elsewhere it's more mixed and sometimes juvenile, including scenes with Chris' sorority; up until the climax, scenes with Fred's fraternity brothers could mostly be cut outright without losing anything. It's not just the humor, though, for the narrative at large is a mixed bag; I feel like if the screenplay were tightened and dispensed with at least one of the story threads, the picture as a whole would have benefited. This is especially true as the horror element doesn't particularly show up until around halfway through; after it does, likeable characters side with unlikable characters, and the fun suffers in another way. There are a lot of good ideas here - only, there are perhaps too many, so as the length progresses the movie seems overfull and spread thin. I enjoyed 'Vamp U,' but it simply didn't need to be So Much, and for that overindulgence, the climax also feels weirdly underwhelming.

At its worst: I looked at the other credits that the filmmakers can claim. They are few and undiscoverable for Jespersen, and many and noteworthy (as producer) for Nelson. I don't think they by any means intended the latent undercurrent of 'Vamp U' that totally alters the viewing experience. I'm inclined to think it manifested organically, by happenstance, like how 'Live and let die' was meant to be "James Bond does blaxploitation" but turned into "James Bond versus the black people." In the same way, 'Vamp U' - the story of a college coed who involuntarily becomes an extra vicious vampire and must be stopped - accidentally becomes apologist for sexual assault. Consider: Gretzky is both entirely obsessed with Chris, and "didn't mean to" turn her into a vampire, and "couldn't help himself." Once Chris turns that corner, she embraces what happened to her as a means of self-empowerment, which is dangerous to Gretzky, to the frat boys who chiefly saw her only as a sexual object, and to others who ignored or underestimated her. Making more vampires (spreading awareness, empowerment, outspoken defiance) - noticeably, that we see in the film's narrative, all women - is more dangerous still to the perpetrators and would-be perpetrators, and so Gretzky turns for aid to his former paramour and past victim, who out of some misplaced or twisted motivation, and/or impaired judgment, enables and joins with her one-time abuser against her own daughter. As the "good guys" put the newly christened vampires to violent ends, they mock them, laugh, and have sport.

Again: I don't think this extra level was intended. I fail to believe the cast would have signed on for the feature if it was. But the incidences are very notable. And even though not every last iota of 'Vamp U' falls in line with that sordid second layer - well, nor does every last iota of the intended farce meet with success. The same uneven writing the dampens the fun of the horror comedy puts holes in the ugly tapestry of what it might dubiously represent.

I passed out from exhaustion partway through watching this (but had sense enough to pause before I did). When I awoke to resume, that's when I had the above realization, and when my overall opinion soured. Was the first half, that I initially thought was funny, actually not that great as my brain scrutinized it? Did the first half lose my favor only after the unsavory notions entered my mind? Was my viewing experience for the remainder likewise colored by the thoughts that came to me? I'm not sure any more, and I'm not sure it makes a significant difference. If the writing were stronger, the entertainment value would speak for itself, and the underhanded, unintentional messaging may well have evaporated into nothing. If the comedy were more consistently worthy, if the horror and its blending with the comedy were more mindfully approached, all those thoughts bent toward critical analysis would have been diminished.

'Vamp U,' as it exists, is fun, but flawed. It's fun, but flawed, even though it arguably bears an asterisk beside its name that warrants earnest assessment - not necessarily from a standpoint of castigation, but simply as meaningful discussion as to how such perspectives arise in storytelling and what it says about our culture. With all this said, however - how much does it deserve one's attention over the many other pictures one could watch instead, that one way or another are more roundly and assuredly excellent? For my part, I don't regret watching this, but it turns out that I have extremely mixed feelings about it. Take that as you will.

Drive a stake through the heart
darren-wigham21 October 2013
I don't know what I expected from this. The vampire genre has been dying for a long time and after the Twilight Sagas and the True bloods have urinated on the grave even the comedy vampire can be laid to rest after this turgid effort. Few laughs and terrible performances (I can't call it acting as there wasn't any in the whole sorry piece - even the usually excellent Gary Cole is phoning it in here) from an entirely charisma free cast. I watched this while lying in bed due to a bad knee injury - I can assure you the pain of my knee ligaments snapping was preferable to being put through this again. Still others out there might like it.

Bad
marritjonker14 September 2014
This movie is really boring and bad. I stopped watching after 20 min because the acting was bad and the storyline. I love vampire movies or series but this one really sucked. When the movie started i already thought wtf is this. But okay i do like Alexis Knapp and i guess that's why i downloaded it. (I'm sorry for the bad English i think there are some faults in the grammar lol) If you want to see the movie i say give it a shot but i didn't liked it. My opinion. This is a really cliché movie and i know that and i didn't even saw the whole movie. I don't know what you guys think of it but i say that you don't have to spend your time on this.

A fair review...
destroyerwod24 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
*Very Minimal Spoilers, i put it mostly cause i am not sure if it can be considered spoilers really, better prevent than being sorry* Its kinda surprising this movie only got 3 reviews considering i saw it in the video store of my local village in the Eastern township of Quebec.

Honestly i was expecting something somewhat middly funny with some teen romance but that could also make me feel for the characters. Honestly i was half satisfy in that department. Let me explain. This movie enter the category of Never Cry Werewolf, My Babysitter's a Vampire, Suck and even Decoy which use aliens, all of those funny light hearted vampire/werewolves movies. Even maybe Fright Night which is a bit more adult based, especially the remake. Its not to be taken seriously, its teen stuff, you usually get yourself in the place of the characters and think "how cool would it be if that was me" lol.

The thing is, this movie failed a bit to relate me over the characters. The fat dude ain't that funny or cool, the "boyfriend" dude ain't really a boyfriend and more or less a childhood friend with a very minimally developed relation in the movie. You never really feel for this guy. The prof vampire, i couldn't even really feel for him either as he seem to show regret killing sometimes but you see him kill and pretty much he don't care really about the guy that he killed. Or he make bad jokes about siring(and now having to kill her) the daughter of his former love that he tough he killed...

All the relations in the movie seem to be somewhat badly developed and the laughs are kinda minimal. Yet somehow i still kinda liked the movie and was not bored or anything... i would say it was borderline. The chick playing Chris was interesting and she was to my opinion the best character of the movie. The Sorority girls where also hot, and somewhat i kinda liked the movie... so i would say honestly its OK, don't expect to be impress but it ain't trash either. The fact that it don't take itself seriously at all really help giving it the free pass...

It's alright.
the-awesome-von-grimm10 November 2014
I am more of a British comedy fan than American, but even tho this movie has a 4, it is amusing enough if you want an airy story on a Wednesday night. It's not a big masterpiece, but for some weird reason I still enjoyed watching it. Even tho it's storyline if far beyond bad. During the movie I sometimes grew big big question marks above my head, since some scenes are too ridiculous to watch. But some of the jokes in it were actually really funny and made me laugh. I love vampire movies, even bad ones, and that is a big part of why I still recommend it to some people. Or maybe it is because it has a big what the f... factor in it. It is a bit like Sharknado: it is so weird and ridiculous that you have to watch it.

Don't expect much, but you'll probably get a bit more
stephyoggi5 April 2014
It's a perfectly fine movie. I hate when people critic movies so harshly for no reason at all. I went to the 'Forrest Gump' IMDb and saw the pompous things people wrote about it, and I just can't imagine why you need to be cynical SO MUCH that you are mean about light-hearted movies like Forrest and obviously silly movies like Vamp U. I just don't understand what people are looking for out of a movie with a college girl's boobs as the film cover.

If you are expect nothing, then you'll pleasantly find it's actually got pretty solid comedy, especially if you don't mistake the purposeful awkwardness as bad acting. If you are sick of browsing Netflix for two hours only to end up watching ANOTHER documentary about lions or history, just watch this.

Vamping like it's 1399
nogodnomasters23 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I apologize. I liked a dumb 2 star film like a 4 star production. Wayne Gretzky (Adam Johnson) is a vampire who accidentally killed Mary (Julie Gonzalo) the love of his life in 1711. For 300 years his fangs have become limp as he feeds off animal blood and confides his troubles to Dr. Arthur Levine (Gary Cole). Dr. G known as "The Great One" is a history professor who teaches history as if he was there...and he was.

As it turns out Mary didn't die, she just became Amish. Her daughter, who could pass for her twin (also played by Julie Gonzalo) , seduces Dr. G. leading to a vampire creating and killing free for all.

The humor was pun filled, something I could sink my teeth into. Adam Johnson came across like a cross between Paul Giamatti and Zack Garifalakis. The one classroom scene of an excited student was reminiscent of one in "Back to School" however Tom (Matt Mattson) made me laugh. He is a member of the STD fraternity and vampire blogger.

Parental Guide: No f-bombs, sex or nudity. Implied sex. Bleeped out F-bomb. Implied nudity from the back.

A mix between American Pie and Buffy, nice.
selienvdvelden17 August 2015
I like the new vampire movies, so this one was on my list. It's nothing like Twilight, just saying (I liked Twilight, but I know there are a lot of people who are not very fond of the whole shiny-vampire-romance). This is definitely nothing like it. I did read the review that was written here on IMDb, and so I did not expect much of it, but it was a nice movie. I had a couple of laughs, definitely did not waste my time, and there are some pretty nasty things going on, made it interesting. Couldn't help but thinking it was kinda like a mix between American Pie and Buffy. So if you like fantasy, bloodsucking hot teenage girls & bad jokes - watch it.

Just Don't Think Too Much About It!
solojere29 March 2021
Vamp U is an Indie comedy about a history professor named Wayne Gretzky, who is also a vampire. When Gretzky accidentally bites one of his students, things spiral out of control as the campus becomes overwhelmed with female vampires. Overall, it's a fun little film as long as you don't think too much about it. The cast was also pretty good, all things considered. I love the character of Wayne Gretzky. I had a professor who acted just like Gretzky when I was in college. He had the same mannerisms and everything (except he wasn't a vampire, I think), which made this film funnier to me. Also, I loved Alexis Knapp in this film. She stole the show in whatever scene she was in. Don't get me wrong. This isn't a perfect film. There are a lot of things that don't make sense. But if you need an escape from reality or just want a fun watch, this is the movie for you.
