Clay McLeod Chapman doesn't just write horror, he performs it in The Pumpkin Pie Show, an immersive storytelling experience that recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. If you haven't had the pleasure of seeing Chapman perform (which our own Daily Dead Editor-in-Chief Jonathan James experienced at The Overlook Film Festival), you can certainly read his work anytime in a number of books, including his new short story collection, Nothing Untoward: Stories from The Pumpkin Pie Show. To celebrate the release of his new collection, we caught up with Chapman for our latest Q&A feature to discuss his literary influences, twenty years of The Pumpkin Pie Show, writing The Tribe trilogy for Disney press, and his upcoming Marvel project that he describes as "a love story between Deadpool and Venom."

Arriving in theaters and on VOD this Tuesday is The Boy, a quiet thriller that focuses on a burgeoning sociopath and how sometimes too much isolation can definitely be a bad thing. The film premiered earlier this year at the 2015 SXSW Film Festival and while this writer missed out on seeing it in Austin, I enjoyed the opportunity to not only catch up with the film now, but also speak to two of the gentlemen behind the project, co-writer and director Craig William Macneill and co-writer Clay McLeod.
Check out what both Macneill and McLeod had to say about adapting The Boy for the big screen, working with the folks over at SpectreVision and their trio of actors in the film (David Morse, Rainn Wilson and newcomer Jared Breeze) and how they hope viewers to have a little sympathy for the devil after seeing their collaboration when its released this week.

Rifling through his father’s shed, nine-year-old Ted (Jared Breeze) sneaks out a ledger book rather than the Playboy on top of it. He acts out the role of hotel manager to nonexistent customers at his family’s desolate Mtn. Vista hotel. It’s clear he tends toward a system of checks and balances, at least until someone or something challenges that idea — then all bets are off. If the rodent roadkill that he collects to sell to his father (David Morse) dries up, he’ll steal a bag of chicken feed and sprinkle it across the street to sway the game in his favor. Director Craig Macneill keeps these actions from Ted deliberate and considered in his debut feature “The Boy” — hinting at the possible disturbing escalations to come. However, the clean lines and murky atmosphere of dread also leave too little of a surprise by the tale’s end.

Since The Office closed its doors in 2013, Rainn Wilson has been steadily turning in supporting performances in independent productions. That run looks set to continue, with news that the actor has joined the cast of The Boy, which began filming in Columbia in February.
The Boy is envisioned as the first part of a film trilogy that will chart the development of a mass murderer named Ted Henley – visiting him at the ages of 9, 14 and 18. In this initial instalment, Ted will be played by Jared Breeze, with David Morse and Mike Vogel – both about to be seen in the mystery thriller, McCanick – also in the cast. Craig Macneill (The Afterlight) is directing from a script he co-wrote with Clay McLeod Chapman.
The origins of this planned trilogy lie in Chapman’s own novel – ‘Miss Corpus’ – published in 2003. That story follows two unconnected strangers on their respective, but particularly disturbing, roadtrips.

Elijah Wood – who’s had his share of genre dippings with Lord of the Rings, Sin City, and the upcoming Maniac remake – will take his love of horror to the next level by heading up an indie film company called The Woodshed.
The Woodshed will produce mainly low-budget genre flicks – those under the umbrella of horror/fantasy/sci-fi.
Elijah Wood is starting the company with Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller.
Wood speaks about his newest (and riskiest) endeavor:
“I’ve been a fan of horror and genre cinema in general since I was a child and have become increasingly passionate about the idea of there being a space in which horror films that take their subject matter and characters seriously could be produced. What was born out of a conversation of our mutual love for the genre and what we felt was lacking in a broad sense, especially from the U.

Every since we saw Elijah Wood in Sin City, we knew this cat had a love of horror films in him, and the very good news is that he's taken said love to an entirely new level with his new shingle, The Woodshed.
Deadline reports that Wood has partnered with Daniel Noah and Josh C. Waller to form The Woodshed, an indie company that will focus on genre fare. Not surprisingly, Wood is a horror fanatic. “I’ve been a fan of horror and genre cinema in general since I was a child and have become increasingly passionate about the idea of there being a space in which horror films that take their subject matter and characters seriously could be produced,” he said. “What was born out of a conversation of our mutual love for the genre and what we felt was lacking in a broad sense, especially from the U.

The films that make up Sundance’s Shorts Program II all address issues of basic intimacy and loneliness. Whether telling the story of a homecoming between wife and husband, an unexpected encounter with a stranger, or in one case, the way technology’s interference in everyday life renders a relationship unidentifiable, these young filmmakers are all attempting to understand emotions that still remain mysterious.
Take Brie Larson, Sarah Ramos, and Jessie Ennis’ The Arm, for example. The film begins misleadingly. A narrative seemingly about a power struggle between two male teenage friends turns quickly into a darkly humorous depiction of a subject we should probably be taking more seriously — texting while driving. A young couple’s new relationship, which is based completely on texting, is cut short when the girlfriend dies in a car crash because she’s Dwd (Driving While Distracted). Though texting distractions are responsible for thousands of deaths each year,...

Written in collaboration with Clay McLeod Chapman
Our short film—Henley—had been back-burning in our brains for over five years. Clay had published a novel back in 2003 called Miss Corpus. Craig, it turns out, was the only person who read it. There’s a chapter in the book, The Henley Road Motel, which is all about a boy growing up in a family-run roach motel. Think lil’ Normie Bates before donning mom’s summer dress. When business begins to dwindle, our 9-year-old hero cracks a pretty devious scheme to bring customers back to the family business—and poof: A short film is born.
When you’re writing a script and the phrase “a dilapidated motel sits next to a lonesome highway” mysteriously appears on your computer screen, you think—Oh, we’ll be able to find one of those, no problem.
Not that you’d tell the motel owners this.
