- Life can be tough for a man who teaches at a school for a living, lives in a DDA flat in Delhi and is coping with the double-digit inflation rates and single digit increments in his salary. Add to that, a teenage daughter, a fast-track son and a wife who loves the good life. The life of the Duggal's is passing by in simply taking care of the basics. Papa Santosh Duggal (Rishi Kapoor) is a teacher & frustrated by not being able to meet the needs of his family. Mummy Kusum Duggal (Neetu Singh), Beti Payal Duggal who loves fashion but can't afford it & Beta Duggal, Sandeep (Archit Krishna) who supplements his pocket money by betting on cricket.
Until one day, they decide to dream. Their ticket to dreaming comes in the form of a wedding invitation. Santosh is a strict teacher and doesn't tolerate mistakes from his students. The rich kids in his class do not pay any attention since they know they will pass anyways without studying. Santosh also moonlights with a tutoring center called Chatwal Coaching Class in order to make ends meet. The owner of the coaching center is Bittu (Rajinder Sharma Nanu).
Santosh was hoping to pacify his family with his income-tax refund, due to which the Duggal family had Rs 7600 extra to spend that month. Payal wanted in iPod, Kusum wants a new fridge, Sandeep wants Dish TV. He will instead be compelled to give up its entire amount after his Meerut-based sister Urmi (Supriya Shukla) invites them over to a wedding. Urmi insists that the entire family has to come for the wedding and that too in a car. Duggal finds that renting a taxi for 2 days will cost Rs 5000. The gift for the groom will cost another Rs 5000. A rich student in Santosh's class offers him Rs 1000 for every mark he awards him on the test paper. Santosh refuses to stake his integrity for the sake of money. Santosh borrows a car from a neighbor, Farooqui (Akhilendra Mishra). At the wedding the car is stolen and is saved by alert inspector Rawat (Deepak Ochchaney), who brings the car to the wedding. Rawat realizes that the car belongs to Farooqi and that Santosh is pretending that the car belongs to him. Rawat charges Santosh Rs 5000, the entire amount which was the groom's gift, no to expose Santosh. Kusum has to sell her jewelry to give a cash envelope to the groom to save Urmi's respect in the family. After the Duggal's return home, Santosh forced to compensate Farooqi as the car gets damaged, when Payal is reverse parking it.
Unable to bear taunts from Farooqi's wife Salma (Natasha Rastogi) that he cannot afford a car, Santosh vows to buy one within the next 15 days. The family is distraught as they have zero confidence in Santosh's ability to buy a car. Santosh wants to buy an Alto as that is the cheapest car at the showroom. Even a WagonR is costing Rs 3,38,000 which Santosh deems too high. It is this decision that will force Payal to seek employment in a call center when she can't bear the thought of going around in an Alto & wants to upgrade. She even has a boyfriend only because the boyfriend has a car. Sandeep confesses that he has been gambling when his contact Kumar (Govind Pandey) is arrested. He keeps his gambling money inside a sealed packet in the fish-tank. Santosh makes Sandeep donate all the betting related winnings among poor kids on the streets.
This leaves Santosh with no alternative but to consider accepting bribes from students and risk being exposed on live TV. Santosh refuses Payal to join call center as he wants her to complete college. The job pays Rs 10,000 per month as starting salary and Rs 25,000 per month after 3 months of training.
He gets 1000 packets of 555 detergent powder when they run a promotion for a lucky car winner, but nothing happens. He asks for advance salary in school & coaching center & is refused. He is about to pass an undeserving student by accepting bribe from his parents, but then an old student comes & greets him & thanks him for making his life. Santosh is emotional is refuses the money. The boy's family is angry & chases Santosh all the way to his house & forces the whole neighborhood around.
Santosh faces them but refuses to pass the boy. The grandfather of the boy thanks Santosh profusely & says that he has every confidence that Santosh will make a good person of out his grandson. He gives 12 months tuition fee as advance & leaves. Santosh finally gets a new car.
