Paul Sharits' "Bad Burns" presents an effect created by re-filming celluloid as it burns on a film projector. This creates a vision of stretching and occasionally bubbling-away illuminated shapes over blue tones, an oddly pacific pattern juxtaposed with an image of destruction that is the more poignant because its victim is the very material that allows us to watch the film in the first place. The act itself, of course, creates state in which the viewer must simultaneously appreciate film and appreciate its destruction. Thus it draws attention simultaneously both to film as a medium and to the camera that captures the images for film, positioned as it must naturally be separately from the film that we see burning. An interesting piece visually and artistically.
