- While Susan continues to undergo dialysis, she is stunned when her flighty mother, Sophie, along with her Aunt Claire, pays a visit but won't agree to get tested to see if she would be a potential kidney donor candidate. Meanwhile, not knowing where biological daughter Grace is causes Gaby to turn her feelings of loss into an obsession; Lynette exacts revenge on Tom after she learns about his past with Renee, and Bree tries to befriend a friendless Beth Young.—ABC Publicity
- We open on Lynette, who recently learned that, two decades ago, Tom slept with Renee. As passive-aggressive revenge, Lynette gives him salty coffee, loosens the bolts on his recliner, etc. It's comedy. Visiting Renee quickly catches on to Lynette's schemes. "I know I shouldn't have told you about us," Renee says. "You could tell him you know and deal with it." Lynette refuses as she is enjoying "revenge" far too much.
The reverend, meanwhile, asks Bree to help Beth Young through her tough time. Bree refuses -- and the pair engages in a scripture-quoting war until the housewife relents. "This is spiritual blackmail!" Bree exclaims. Cut to Gaby's dining room, where she eats brunch with Bob and Lee. The happy couple announces that they're going to adopt a little girl. Gaby is sad. "It's just ... I don't even know how Grace is or where she is," Gaby explains. Carlos SNAPS, telling everyone to please stop talking about Grace.
Back at the hospital, Susan is visited by her daughter. Julie offers to give Susan her kidney, but mom refuses for the good of her offspring. Mike suggests that Susan get a kidney from her own mom. "She'll be here tomorrow," Julie says. Susan FREAKS OUT. "This is a nightmare!" she exclaims. Apparently, the two don't get along.
The next morning, Tom drives to work ... and is surprised to find Renee sitting in the back seat. "She found out," Renee says. Tom puts two and two together: Lynette has been messing with him for days. "She is one angry woman," Renee says. "Who knows what she'll do next." Bree, in the meantime, visits Beth, who defends Paul because he has had a tough life. Bree then invites Beth over for an evening with the gals. Beth reluctantly accepts.
Cut to the hospital, where Susan's mom Sophie (guest star Lesley Ann Warren), along with Aunt Claire (guest star Valerie Harper), make a grand entrance. Naturally, Sophie immediately begins needling Susan -- and reacts quite poorly to the suggestion that she give a kidney to Susan. Sophie explains that she is about to take a non-refundable cruise so she can't possibly undergo surgery. Tom, meanwhile, returns home and confronts Lynette. He claims the two were separated when he slept with Renee. Lynette insists that they were only "taking a break." Crying, Lynette storms out.
At the hospital, Susan is about to be discharged. Sophie offers to help her pack her bags or push her wheelchair. "You had your chance to help!" Susan yells. "How can you refuse to even be tested? My own mother!" Sophie apologies for disappointing Susan before running away in tears. Later, Claire shows up at Susan's front door. "She has cancer," Claire explains. "Breast cancer." The cruise is only a cover story because Sophie didn't want to burden Susan. Claire urges Susan not to let on that she knows the truth. "She's trying to make up for a lifetime of me, me, me," Claire explains. "Let her."
Gaby visits a doll shop because her doll, which resembles Grace, needs to be repaired, as Celia had broken its arm off while she & Juanita were playing with her without Gaby's knowledge or permission. Turns out that Gabby has become quite attached to the doll, which she closely associates with Grace. "She calms me down when I get upset," Gaby says of the doll. "The thought of leaving here without her really upsets me." Later, Gaby brings home the repaired doll and puts it safely in the closet. She is comforted. Tom, in the meantime, attempts to apologize to Lynette. "We have had such beautiful moments together," he says. "I didn't want to ruin a single one of them. I hope you can forgive me for this." Lynette appears to soften.
Susan then visits her mother. "I just wanted to apologize for yesterday," daughter tells mother. Susan then explains that the one good thing about having a health scare is that it makes you realize what's most important in life. "That's very true," Sophie says. Susan then tells her mother how much she loves her. Sophie returns the words. It's a touching moment. They promise to get together after the "cruise." The next morning, Tom and Lynette eat breakfast with their kids, who insult and tease each other. This behavior is apparently touching because it causes Lynette to take her husband's hand under the table.
Later, Bree welcomes Susan, Lynette, Gaby and Renee into her home ... and then mentions that Beth is on her way. The women react poorly to the news of the extra guest. "I just felt sorry for her," Bree says. "The poor woman has been shunned by everyone in this neighborhood." Suddenly, the doorbell rings. It's a shaggy haired florist, who delivers Bree flowers. Before anyone can offer any theories on the identity of who sent the bouquet, Beth enters the room. It's immediately awkward until Bree reminds her friends to remember Mary Alice, the first woman married to Paul, who killed herself.
Back in the living room, Beth discovers a gun under the throw pillow on her chair! "It's a 38-caliber!" Bree exclaims. Beth mentions that Paul was shot with a 38. "I think I'm beginning to understand why you invited me over," says a suddenly suspicious Beth, who theorizes that Bree wanted Beth's fingerprints on the gun. Susan and Lynette accuse Beth of bringing the gun. "You're all in on this!" Beth exclaims. "You want to set me up!" She storms out of the house. Later that night, Bree cozies up with Keith, who says that he wasn't the one who sent Bree flowers. So who did?
Cut to the shaggy haired florist at a dingy motel. He takes off a wig and reveals himself to be Zach Young. Uh oh.
