Black Humor, Drama, Thriller and … Masuka
claudio_carvalho8 July 2014
Lumen changes her appearance wearing black wig and make-up on her face. Meanwhile Dexter captures the homosexual serial-killer Lance Robinson and when he is ready to kill him, he receives a phone call from Lumen telling that she is in Miami and has just killed one of the men that raped her. Dexter injects a drug in Lance, puts him in the trunk of his truck and heads to the warehouse where Lumen is. Soon he realizes that the man was not dead and has vanished. Debra prepares and operation with the other cops in the nightclub to ambush the Fuentes brothers. However they are summoned to the warehouse to investigate a call from prostitutes that had overheard shots in the area. Dexter is also requested to go and he needs to find Lumen's victim first. When Lance flees from his truck and the police arrive at the spot, his situation is extremely complicated.

"Everything Is Illumenated" is a great episode that combined black humor with drama and thriller. Lumen shots the man in a hunch and Dexter is concerned with the possibility that her victim is an innocent man. But the situation is resolved thanks to the flamboyant Masuka. My vote is nine.

Intense Dex & Lumen driven story, literate writing, wicked jokes and enchainting ambivalent ending
igoatabase1 November 2010
One actress to rule them all, Julia Stiles. Each fictional goddess should have her shrine and Lumen is no exception. This sixth installment was a turning point. The decisive moment when we have to choose between entering her temple, with the risk of never getting out of it, and running for our miserable lives. When Lumen decided to stay in Miami it was obvious she would inevitably stumble upon our favorite daddy. So as expected the story was driven by her and Dex. The way it was developed was both refreshing and exciting. Their intense run was full of wit and puzzling contradictions. Moreover their growing relationship puts the monster we all know in a completely different light. I even spotted a possible reference to Descartes and his famous rule on slicing things up to gain control or solve a complex problem more easily. The compartment metaphora was as smart as the others and should deepen the layered vision you have of the show. From the serial killer to the father Dex personality is composed of so many mirrors that it's hard to keep up. Everything is Illumenated severely tested his multi-tasking ability and the writers kept surfing on the edgy wave summoned in the past season. Master Masuka was also back with his vicious wisdom and non sense theories. The guy deserves his own talk show ! An other guilty pleasure was the baby. Good or evil ? The recurring joke about him was just irresistibly wicked ! Last but not least the ending duration and velocity were perfect. It successfully packed up all events in a nice wooden box, ready to be opened as a Pandora and unleash its cataclysmic fury. The controversial reference to Rita was heartbreaking and perfectly executed. You should specially be moved by the contrast between the cold floor where the characters are sat down and the ambivalent warmth of the dialogs. Lumen.

A Bit Too Convenient
rwk22 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
SPOILER ALERT! Regarding the ending, what gives with this massive dose of convenience? To say nothing of exceptional luck? Dex just forgets about the guy in his trunk, whose then able to break the glass of the car, alerting everyone in ear-shot. (Ever tried that? Not too easy. For that matter, why not just open a door?) Why didn't Dex, normally so logical, just give him more M99? Thinking fast though, he runs the guy down, kills him, and then dumps him with the dentist. Which is all fine. But Matsuda then whips out a funkified choking sex theory, which while (oddly) plausible the cops buy totally into without any hint of fact-checking. Who ARE these two guys? Why are they in a warehouse? Why a murder-suicide? Man I hope this storyline doesn't die. The dentist had a wife and kids and they at least should be shown clamoring for answers about such a bizarre death.

Also, shouldn't Dex and Lumen be able to track that last cell call directly to another of the killers? Again, convenience.

I enjoyed the episode but it wrapped up a little too neatly. I'm really crossing my fingers that the writers make this just the tip of the iceberg.

Die, die
jotix10016 July 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Morgan has zeroed in Lance Robinson, a killer that lures his gay victims with ads offering sexual encounters on line. He has to leave Harrison with Sonya, the Irish baby sitter, before he goes to do his thing. Sonya, carrying Harrison, is surprised when Harrison utters two words, "die die", instead of "dad dad", heard clearly by the father.

While preparing Lance, whom he lures to his camper parked outside the club where the criminal makes his contacts, he receives a strange call from no other than Lumen Pierce. In fact, Lumen, never having gone back to her native Minnesota, has decided to get one of the people that attacked her. Disguised as a brunette, she gets the man to a warehouse, where she shot him. Now, not knowing what to do, she is seeking Dexter's help. The wounded man, manages to escape, but Dexter follows the trail of blood as he arrives to help Lumen, leaving a "wrapped" Lance in his car.

Meanwhile, Debra Morgan, is briefing the detectives about how they are going to proceed to trap the Fuentes brothers at the Mayan club. The chief of police walks in as she is going through the procedure, a foolish plan, as far as he is concerned and a waste of the taxpayer money. Maria LaGuerta is willing to risk it, so they go with the plan. While monitoring on a vehicle the activity of the club, Deb is called to a crime scene at the warehouse where earlier, Dexter was seen trying to help Lumen. Batista, volunteering to go inside gets lucky spotting a young woman wearing a necklace that shows she knows the Fuentes.

Dexter and Lumen realize it will not take long for the patrol cars to arrive at where they are since he got a phone call for him to go. Trying to get to the wounded man proves too much, but in the end, Dexter realizes he is one of the persons that did attack Lumen. Going to his car, he discovers Lance Robinson had escaped, but catches up with him. Dexter has no choice but do him in, sooner than he thought, placing him next to the other wounded man, who made a confession he was the one. When Deb and the team gets to the scene, they see a scene with two dead persons that must have killed each other.

Wendy West's screenplay goes easy on Dexter, solving his two conflicts with one logical explanation. Steve Shill directed with good pacing for the action. The regulars do their excellent job they do on each episode. Julia Stiles was the guest star.

Die die
dannylee-780829 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
1. Harrison says his first words 2. Angel makes up with Laguerta 3. Dexter pulls a close escape

Ok - despite the fact that I absolutely hate Lumen's character (even taken into the fact that her irrationality and stubbornness are related to her trauma) I actually enjoyed this episode. Very engaging moments. One of the few episodes in this season this engaging. When I see Dex, I see a man who's compulsions keep spelling trouble - but he can't stop it. I'm slightly getting tired of this formula but hopefully this season finds more direction.

S5.E6 - Lumen and More Lumen [9.5/10]
panagiotis199319 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
(S5. E6) My Reaction / Review for Dexter Season 5 Episode 6 ''Everything Is Illumenated'': Episode 5 was great and I gave it a rating of 9/10. Let's see if this one is better or worse. Looks like Dex found his next victim. Lumen ruined everything, she is clearly unstable and that could expose both her and Dexter. At least this guy, the ra-pist is dead and im really happy about that, I would prefer a ritual killing but the neck breaking is good too. Wow the first guy that Dex kidnapped and put in his car is awake? And he escaped? Things just got real messy. Wow Masuka really made me laugh with his theory of what happened. Deb and Quinn are kinda cute together, I hope this relationship wont be short like Deb's previous ones. Overall this was an amazing episode, my rating is 9.5/10.

I don't know...
lingerer-12 November 2010
Warning: Spoilers
where this show is going at the moment. I was so excited after episode 4, just to get slapped in the face by episode 5 and now this... The story is developing as expected so far and that is a good thing.

The directing in this episode was pretty amusing (Batista+Latina->Laguerta "incident", Dex hunting naked guy paralleled by "the march of the detectives", Dex setting up the weird crime scene etc.) but most of it felt like cheap Tarantino tricks used only for their coolness effect. OK, I like shows that don't take themselves too serious but it's getting out of hand here.

The problem is, "Dexter" starts feeling like "A-Team" or even worse: like "Inception". Dex seems to be bulletproof, nothing can happen to him even if he never was as sloppy as in this season. This way no felt tension ever arises, while you clearly see that exactly that (the creation of tension) was the driving intention of the Director. This mismatch causes me feeling detached from the character and I think that's why I'm starting to loose interest.

I hope the writers catch up with the directing and create a darker, more tense and less cartoonish atmosphere for Dex.
