Criterion adds Jellyfish Eyes to its collection, the directorial debut of prolific Japanese artist Takashi Murakami. Known for his multi-faceted platforms of painting, sculpture, and a continual blending of media meant to push the boundaries of what defines notions of art, his 2013 debut is a psychedelic children’s adventure conveying significant messages as concerns social media, the environment, and human interaction. Having had his work featured at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles during a 2007-2009 retrospective, it’s perhaps no surprise Murakami premiered his film at Lacma (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) in 2013, before it spread to other venues and ultimately a limited theatrical release in the Us in July, 2015. Named by Time magazine in 2008 as one of the one hundred most influential people (the only visual artist to make this particular round) perhaps explains the high expectations and underwhelming critical response to his first cinematic effort.

Another Earth director Mike Cahill returns with a new sci-fi drama, I Origins. Here’s what he had to say about that and other things...
Could the unique makeup of the human eye hold the key to life after death? That’s the tantalising mystery at the heart of director Mike Cahill’s latest film, I Origins. Cahill’s no stranger to making sci-fi dramas on a budget; in 2011, he brought us After Earth, an atmospheric, thought-provoking movie with some great performances from his frequent collaborator Brit Marling and former Lost star William Mapother.
I Origins is cut from the same indie cloth. It’s about a young scientist who’s investigating the evolutionary origins of the eye, and following a shocking personal tragedy, finds himself veering off on a different and less mainstream scientific direction.
Shot on a budget slightly higher than Another Earth, but still tiny by Hollywood standards,...

Underwater Love
Directed by Shinji Imaoka
Japan, 2011
Genre-mixing has become a mainstream element to modern day filmmaking. From zombies and slapstick (Shawn of the Dead) to video games and comic books (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) to the “mumblecore” independent movement’s dramedies (Cyrus, Greenberg, Please Give), mixing genres has become a steadfast part of the way audiences see and identify with particular films. As the line between genres and sub-genres blur, occasionally a film comes along that goes against the grain, suggesting a new subgenre all its own. Thus is the case with Shinji Imaoka’s “pink musical (pinku eiga)” Underwater Love (Onna No Kappa), outlandishly splicing the extremities of musicals and soft-core pornography. Yes, there is porn. And yes, it’s actually brilliant. By juxtaposing the light nature of musicals to that of the graphic nature of pornography, Imaoka interjects an emotion that is pivotal to the development...

[Our very sincere thanks to Screen International contributor, film translator and all purpose man of Japanese film Jason Gray for the following report from the set of Shinji Imaoka's Underwater Love.]
Just over a month ago I had the opportunity to visit the set of Shinji Imaoka's latest pink film production, Underwater Love (Onna no Kappa, 『おんなの河童』), shot by legendary cinematographer Christopher Doyle (see previous Twitch post). Underwater Love marks Japanese production company Kokuei's 50th year in the pinku eiga business as well as their first foreign co-production, in partnership with Germany's Rapid Eye Movies.
I was picked up in front of famed indie cinema Theater Pole-Pole Higashi-Nakano by the film's publicity company staff and we were off to Lake Kasumigaura in Ibaraki Prefecture. I was joined on the 90km ride by Japanese cinema expert and former Tokyo animeOnline editor Bryan Hartzheim, who also happened to translate the shooting draft of the Underwater Love screenplay.
We turned off the highway, navigating local roads and rural routes until we finally arrived at the waterfront set. Lake Kasumigaura was much larger than I expected.

You'll be forgiven if you found it fantastically strange when word came out that acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle - the man behind the camera for all of Wong Kar Wai's key films - was currently at work in Tokyo as the cinematographer on Japanese pinku picture Underwater Love. Pinku, for the uninitiated, is essentially a form of Japanese soft-porn and the idea of Doyle moving into skin flicks was already weird enough to catch the attention even before we heard that the film was also a musical. Yes, a Japanese sex musical. And now it gets even weirder with the first official plot details:
From Japan's Kokuei Company and Germany's Rapid Eye Movies comes a whimsical pink film (softcore ) musical about a woman and a sea creature. The story involves Asuka, a woman in her thirties who works in a lakeside fish factory. She's about to be married to her boss,...
