Potential ruined with odd pacing
Saw-it-on-Tubi6 January 2019
This film is about 90 minutes, which is pretty typical for the genre, but the leads don't share a scene until the 30 minute mark. It was a nice enough film, but some plot elements seemed to be thrown in at the last second in a way that didn't add to the story.

Also, heads up, parts of the movie take place in Brazil and the characters speak Portuguese, so there are some subtitles.

Likable, but rather bland...could have easily been a t.v. movie
vincentlynch-moonoi13 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Dean Cain is a likable actor. His best role was, of course, as Superman in "Lois & Clark" on television quite a while back. He has not really risen much above television movies since then. And, like him, they're mostly pleasant affairs. This particular film was not a television movie, but it seems like one -- pretty shallow...but mildly pleasant. Here, the likable Cain plays a likable owner of a bed and breakfast in California wine country. But up pops a Brazilian woman who also seems to be the owner of the same property. See where this is going??? It's blatantly obvious with few surprises along the way. We meet a few wacko guests to the B&B, but this will barely hold your attention. Again, a somewhat pleasant diversion.

Cain's acting here is likable, but that's about all I can say in his defense. Brazilian actress Juliana Paes plays the other owner, and she is pleasant, as well.

If you like Hallmark television movies, you'll probably like this film. Otherwise, pass it by.

Not the best
croftonjohn6 May 2013
Not good, not dreadful . Bad editing and performances to a storyline with promise. Still watched and in a strange way , enjoyed. Two main characters did not hit it off on screen but both were not bad. Still worth a view if not paying for it. The problem is the editing and the beginning in two languages. It makes it disjointed .belief is most important in any movie. This does not have it. It has all the components but not the glue to join it up. It's a pity because I wanted to smile, laugh and wish the main characters well in the adventure.the backdrop was right. The mobiles seemed to work but the camera failed to deliver.

Juliana Paes, the only redemption
horsetraders29 December 2011
Warning: Spoilers
I only put spoiler alert because it is so simply obvious that the movie attempts to telegraph what's about to happen.

Juliana does a stellar job with facial expressions and sincerity, especially since her lines were apparently written by a 10 year old. A number of times, just when the movie appears to be making sense and following an understandable path, it slides off into tired and confusing situations.

While I personally like movies with surprises, this one is surprising only in that it simply can't make any sense.

If you have Netflix, and it doesn't cost to watch streaming, and you have housework to do, it might do for white noise, otherwise, don't bother.

Disappointing
VetteRanger19 April 2013
Dean Cain brightens up anything he's in, but he couldn't save this poorly written mess.

There was an idea here with some potential. However, evidently the writer was a 10 year old who has never been out of the house. Virtually no one's actions in the film ring true. There is a lot of law involved, and none of it is even CLOSE to being right. Situations that the writer and director hoped would be zany and funny are just contrived and awkward.

Characters who are meant to be funny caricatures are just annoying. Bill Engvall is completely wasted. Eric Roberts is tragically miscast as a gay hotel reviewer. Juliana Paes seems uncomfortable and insincere in most of her scenes. Julia Duffy is underused.

This film is a waste of everyone's time.

Legal mumbo jumbo
dacicconi15 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The premise of the movie turns on a Will leaving a Bed & Breakfast to Dean Cain's character. The testator was an old lady that wrote her will by hand, then dated and signed it. The local attorney, in a stunning display of malpractice, claims that the will is invalid. This is so fundamentally wrong that it boggles the mind. Perhaps the writer should have done some research or asked a California attorney about the law, and learned that such a will is called a holographic will, and is perfectly legal in most of the States, including California. Then to add insult to injury, a supposed mediation judge working barefooted out of a small decrepit trailer is called in, and he too fails to recognize a holographic will, rules for the intestate heir (Juliana Paes), then compounds his idiocy by demanding $700 for a five minute session. I love the smell of contrivance in the morning. Juliana Paes is wonderful, as is Dean Cain, but there is no hiding from a dumb plot.

A harmless bit of fun
blrnani24 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Given the stuff being served to US college students over the last 20 years I'm amazed at the comments from some US reviewers about immaturity.

(SPOILER ALERTS) Juliana Paes is an exotic Brazilian beauty and Dean Cain is, well, superman, so the mutual attraction would be understanding. However, it's not that simple, starting from the premise that they're both basically simple salt-of-the-earth types just trying to live decent lives.

Juliana has worked herself up to the rank of department store supervisor, but then gets dumped on, by her beach bum boyfriend, her worthless brother, who borrows all the savings she can afford but ends up getting put in jail to escape his debt collectors and needs 8x that to clear his name, and finally her father, who dies leaving her half a million reais in debt (about 1000x the Brazilian minimum monthly wage at the time). The only salvation seems to be a property in a small California town that she's inherited from her grandmother.

Dean is a handyman who has been dumped by his suddenly famous actress wife (who fell for her leading man) but was given a property that he is turning into a B&B - hence the title. The catch is that he was left the same property Juliana inherited, so something's gotta give.

As it turns out, that's their resistance to one another, but of course there are plenty of complications, as well as side issues, along the way. I won't spoil it by saying how it all plays out, but it is all harmless fun of the kind you'd have expected from comedy back in the 60s (an era that produced some great films, so no need to sneer, post-millenniums). Kudos also for a brief comedy turn from Eric Roberts, who plays a swishy hotel reviewer, and Julia Duffy, whose mothering instincts are brought out by the B&B's owner.

Ick!
moviereviewer9913 February 2020
Queued it up in Tubi, because it sounded like it might be like Hallmark's All of my Heart with Lacey Chabet and Brennan Elliott.

It was NOTHING like that movie, especially the acting.

Bed & Breakfast....bad acting and really bad presentation.

I go to movies to watch them, not read them.

Couldn't watch more than 5 minutes, because it was obvious it wasn't like Hallmark's All of my Heart.

Embarrassing
tadeu-br7 December 2011
Pseudoactor and TV presenter, Marcio Garcia directs his first feature film. The film lacks script, directing and acting. The last scene - a displaced product placement - in which Mr Garcia acts is something to be remembered - because it is the most embarrassing moment in the recent film history. Juliana Paes is very famous in Brazil because she played an Indian in a soap opera, and Dean Cain (Dean who?) is virtually unknown after his superman TV show was canceled so many years ago. The movie was one of the biggest BO disappointments last year in Brazil - thanks heaven people still have sense. Because of that it is a shock that Mr GArcia found anyone to put money in a new film.

Immature 8th grade boy may like it
Sorry folks - this movie is written for immature eight grade boys. The whole movie revolves around kissing scenes and staring at the parts of the lead actress. I am surprised that Dean Cain took the role of this cheesy low rent movie. I would not waste your time, unless you are an immature eight grade boy, but even then with all the other films out there - you too would be bored.I am not quite sure why they make movies like this one, unless they have a quota or something. I guess it was supposed to be funny and cute, so if you only had two choices and the other one was reruns of The Andy Griffith Show - I would watch Andy, Opie, and Barney - much more entertaining.

Mediocre but pleasant enough love story
Jackbv12310 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Juliana Paes is a sizzling Brazilian actress and this movie plays to her strengths without crossing over into nudity. Sometimes Juliana is preening for effect and at other times she manages to inject some heart and compassion into her lines.

Dean Cain does his best to support Paes. He is supposed to look like a typical man who is overly impressed by the sexy lady and therefore looks a little clumsy. In the romantic moments he holds up his end but doesn't shine.

It is a pleasant enough love story and of course we know how it has to end. There are really no twists or surprises.

However the ending doesn't totally make sense since it never explains how Ana will get the money she needs to pay her debt, but who knows, maybe the place is worth enough to mortgage it. Also, she leaves abruptly and must still think that Jake is making up to his wife and that she may no longer be the ex, but Ana comes back anyway. Maybe we are supposed to believe she came back for love of the countryside.

It's a romance story, so those frequently don't make sense.

Looked like it was going to be a cute movie until the brother and sister started speaking in a foreign language. I quit watching it at that point.

I watch a movie to WATCH it, not read the English subtitles.

Even with the lack of creativity for a really engaging story and a script entirely predictable ends, the chemistry of the protagonist couple works
fernandoschiavi10 February 2024
Márcio Garcia ventured behind the camera for the first time in 2009 with the short film Stinger. In this work we can see an interesting work with intelligent plans and the correct use of some techniques such as slow motion. At least for esthetic possessed some attractive. In the following year he won his first opportunity in a feature film, this co-production between the United States and Brazil. The Brazilian could with a bigger budget and counting with interesting names in the cast, the chance to start an international career. Distributed by FJ Productions and written by Leland Douglas, who is also associate producer of the production, Bed & Breakfast is a romantic comedy shows nothing more courageous among many others, without any difference in its history and that contains all the clichés of the genre imaginable.

Ana Villanova (Juliana Paes) works as a saleswoman in a large department store in Rio de Janeiro. After discovering that his recently deceased father left her a huge debt and they also inherited her grandmother's property in Webster, a wine region of California, she leaves for the small town. There, he meets Jake Sullivan (Dean Cain), which is separating the film star Amanda Cox (Kimberly Quinn) and who owns the property which Ana believes to be his. Upon discovering the situation, Ana does everything to evict him from the site. The fight for local ownership is the main conflict of a story that already imagine how it will end.

Earlier we have an impression that we are faced with two films, there is no homogeneity. The scenes shot in Brazil, as expected by the counterpoint to do with the weather tranquil and secluded, more rural Webster, is presented with the traditional image of Christ the Redeemer and the people on the beach playing beach soccer and sunning. We have characters that are part of the fellowship of Ana and only appear to even say one or two sentences, having no relevance to the plot. We have known actresses of the Brazilian public in small parts like Priscilla Marinho, the beautiful Luiza Valdetaro, and Daniel Avila who plays brother "problem" of the protagonist. The best known names are Mark Quibbler and Rodrigo Lombardi extremely caricatured in equity. The first attempts to show a character selfish and immature to even speak slang forced and misplaced. The second plays a homosexual exaggerated and unconvincing. After the jokes do not laugh, but by the constrangermos with the performances, the challenge is to convince yourself to finish watching the movie.

After the two parallel stories being rapidly developed, Ana goes to Webster and the film takes the clichés of time, but not enough aser a total disappointment. All ingredients of this type of film are there: one protagonist charismatic and beautiful clothes always appreciate the body (even more Juliana Paes, so well-known by Brazilians), one male protagonist equally beautiful, charismatic, funny and great heart. Could not miss a dog, bucolic and romantic scenarios (a city with Wine Festival was the ideal choice), the question of making a living that will fall for each other despite the dispute individual interests, an event that forces the couple to get together at some point which forces a better understanding of both supporting characters that are responsible for the purely comical cases the attorney Ana, Victor, played by British actor Julian Stone, Jake and the maid, Maria, played by Zilah Mendoza. It is especially Victor who concentrate the best comic scenes. We can also see in a brief appearance actor Eric Roberts as the restaurant critic, Mr. Hopewell. Also ridiculous, Roberts has little time to show that came.

The script Leland Douglas uses the formula already established in Hollywood, but the lack of experience Márcio Garcia is clearly felt. Missing more elaborate plans, cuts faster and dynamic text faster and more subjective. Lack that "timing" for a comedy, especially in the scenes filmed specifically to make you laugh. The direction of Márcio Garcia fails to compromise, but on some occasions he abuses the camera movements. We also often feel ill prepared dialogues and artificial. The interpretations also, in general, were esteriotipadas to try to start some audience laughter in vain. More comfortable in the cast even have the beautiful Juliana Paes, who has charisma and undeniably shows good English. Juliana gets a good chemistry on stage with Dean Cain (Superman's series Lois & Clark - The New Adventures of Superman (1993-1997)) and the presence of the two is what makes continue on until the end.

Other key points of the script come to be ridiculous. Early in the film, Ana learns of father's inheritance almost instantly, the same day of his death, without at least a brief scene of funeral or burial to mitigate the situation. Instead of seeing the suffering a little for the loss of his father, as we see transpire shortly after going without a lot of pain for the loss to the United States. How to believe a law that just pay taxes (even just $ 20) to be considered the owner of the property? Even being an American law is difficult in cer something. And what about a retired judge, for years outside the judicial system and that apparently lives isolated in his house, which acts as a mediator in the case and resolve the situation without resources? In the two previous scenes were obstinate to get the property, and the next scene is all settled by the judge the way it was?

The blend of different cultures is a positive point. We see Ana bikini sunbathing with a typical Brazilian teaching kiss "Brazilian way" beyond landscapes and bustle of Rio de Janeiro. The confrontation not only the property, but customs is interesting to see. The soundtrack also uses this interesting mix. We see from love songs to international samba. Photograph of Craig Kief explores the landscapes and sites and creates a good backdrop for the novel. It is timely to realize, however, that the technique completely changes from California to Rio de Janeiro.

A point to be emphasized, however, are the marketing actions throughout the film, culminating in a ridiculous scene starring the director himself the long, Márcio Garcia. Undoubtedly one embarrassing scene. It is unfortunate at least a scene created for the sole purpose of advertising a product. The director comes out of nowhere to take down the final print cheerful and romantic and let everyone perplexed explicit propaganda.

Even with the lack of creativity for a really engaging story and a script entirely predictable end as we know from the first scene, the chemistry of the protagonist couple works (sorry that only occurs in the final film) and serves perfectly as a passenger entertainment family. Lightweight and uncompromising. Gone to innovate something in script structure and technically. It's just a standard film of the genre, but it lags behind any romantic comedy median American.

I love this movie!
juanireggiemia19 September 2023
Its a great story and the actors and actresses played their parts very well. I loved the story line and the chemistry between Jake and Ana. I also like the supporting actors and actresses especially Maria, Victor, Hank, Judge Conner, and Mr. And Mrs. Harvey. I also like how the movie switches from one place to the other, and both are very interesting and beautiful. This movie is a breath of fresh air as it has no violence or profanity. The different cultures blend well in this delightful film. It has funny moments and the twists and turns keeps the movie interesting. So make some popcorn and enjoy this one!
