a raw, delicate piece that could possibly become a sleeper classic if more people see it.

Warning: Spoilers
Falling Overnight follows the story of a man, Elliot Carson, who finds love at the worst time in his life. Scheduled for brain surgery on the next day, he tries to pass the dreadful hours of waiting time by going out. What he didn't expect was that he'll meet her match a day before his possible last day here on earth. It is basically, life giving him the finger if you look at it in a mad perspective. Or it could be a sign of hope. Maybe, a reason for him to weigh on waking up after surgery.

At first glance, the concept behind Falling Overnight seems familiar. A look into love limited by time. Something already established in the love story classic, Before Sunrise (1995). The setup is two strangers meeting for the first time and falling in love despite the short amount of time they spent together. What makes Falling Overnight different from the classic is not just the presence of the lead character's illness. It is the treatment to the concept that sets them apart.

While Before Sunrise tries to show you how sapiosexually-inclined the two lead characters are, 'Falling' takes you to the actual emotions of the characters on screen. They're not trying to prove to the audience that you can indeed fall in love in a short span of time. The film succeeds in portraying human emotion rather than make up through conversation for the otherwise silly little concept. Don't get me wrong. I'm not hating on Before Sunrise, it has its own merits and I love the film as well. This is rather a clear cut distinction between the two great movies. Most people would probably tell themselves, "why would I want to watch another Before Sunrise?" You might miss this little cinematic gem because of that presumption.

Yet another difference the film has from its predecessor is the characterization of the lead. Elliot was not the resident shy boy although it is pretty evident how he chooses to distance himself from the people around him. Maybe, if it wasn't for the illness, he'd be that friend you'd like to hang out with. It is possible that after finding out about his condition, he deliberately chose to separate himself from the rest of the world. This is more evident on the unanswered phone calls from his mates and his brief phone conversation with his mother. Apart from him and his mom, it even appears as if he never told anyone of his condition. Maybe, he didn't want people to worry about him too much. It felt like, he was prepping himself to actually leave.

What makes it more interesting is that Elliot never set out to fall in love. This movie wasn't the bucket list type of picture. He had no intention of splurging it all on his possible final hours. Hell, he only wanted something to drink when they met. And when he realized what life just did to him that night, all he could do was laugh about it in his car. At first you might think, this movie is going to be a definite cryfest. While it may work for some, it might never even be the main goal. The movie had every chance to exploit the drama behind the situation but it never does. Instead, it showed the characters as people. Not a tool for drama.

If you want to see a love story that feels more real than idealistic, this is the right one you're looking for. It kind of reminded me of the quality HBO's Girls had in its first season. Raw and gritty, hits close to home. It wasn't relying on smart, existential thoughts, and witty dialogue. It's pure emotion translated into film. As Parker Croft's debut as the writer/executive producer for this film, I must say he gave a very defined performance as the character he wrote. But the biggest breakthrough comes from Emilia Zoryan's performance. This was her first film yet she acts as if she's been doing it her whole life. Very natural and captivating.

Falling Overnight is a raw, delicate piece that could possibly become a sleeper classic if more people see it.

La vita è bella: Life is Beautiful
abhi-iknowit20 October 2012
There are very few moments in life when you understand you've met the person you are supposed to be with, at least at that point of time. Director Conrad Jackson's take on the movie makes you feel like you are a part of such a moment. Both the lead actors portrait such naivete and at the same time great depth that it makes the story believable. The chance meeting, to the night they spend together, have been woven together so methodically that you never feel out of sync. You feel the pain, the anguish, their love, hope for a future, dreams and just understanding how precious life is in even its most mundane moments.

Watch the movie for a good story made excellent due to its direction and great acting.

Award-Winning Drama 'Falling Overnight' should be experienced at-least once!

Warning: Spoilers
I've been waiting for this movie since I watched the trailer 3 months ago. The song used for the trailer 'Search and Destroy by Sanders Bohlke', also used in the films background kept me hold on this movie for so long and finally I got to watch it over an exhausted weekend.

The film is very simple and moves silently and then takes pace when Chloe enters. The beautiful thing about the film is its optimistic flow, even though the theme is quite serious. 22 old Elliot Carson on the day before he has surgery to remove a brain tumor, he meets Chloe Webb, a young photographer. She invites him to her art show and since they meet at an art show, their night goes together with parties at friend's house, hiking, biking. Their relation is going strong every moment and even Elliot forgetting everything enjoys them with Chloe.

When Elliot breaks the news to Chloe about his surgery, Chloe breaks down into grief. They both knows, in a short span of time they spent together, they have fallen for each other. And Elliot has an uncertain future.

I'm always fond of small budget, intense subject and some outstanding performance genre films. This movie is 86 minutes long (or short excluding end titles :)), Budgeted $50,000 (estimated) and awesome performance by Writer, Actor Parker Croft. Debutant Emilia Zoryan looks promising as well. both are confident, talented actors and have a bright future. Supporting cast does their job well. worth mentioning Cinematography by writer/director Conrad Jackson and Sound Department. Every song used in the movie is nice and situational. The almost end scene when Elliot and Chloe goes to her room and you get to see Parker's powerful acting skills, the start of 'Search and Destroy' song almost makes goose bumps.

Performance wise the lead pair scores best. Emilia is so stunning and graceful that in all her scenes, it's hard to keep your eyes off her. I think in the beginning, the pace of the film could have been more faster. Few of the characters and scenes looks rigid and mechanical. And even though 86 minutes, it could have explored more of Elliot and Chloe's relation. But still the film is quite nice and peaceful.

'Falling Overnight' has won 9 awards so far and out of them Parker Croft has grabbed 7 Best Actor awards. I look forward for these young actors in upcoming projects. This film has to be experienced at least once. I love the Romance, Drama, Music and you get all of them in it in some satisfying ways.

unexpectedly fantastic
carry-9211 November 2012
I've seen the trailer a while ago and thought this might be a good movie. Didn't really expect anything super special, just something you consider watching whenever.

Yesterday I finally decided to watch the film, simply because I felt like watching a Drama. The first thing you hear is this song. I've never heard it before and I really liked it (Shaun Rust - On Your Side). When a movie starts off with a great song I just get excited about what's to come. Music in a movie is always really important to me, I did like all of them here. They were perfectly chosen. Then there's the story. Though it is a Drama, having parts where you're in tears, it does have some happy moments where you smile while watching it. When a film gets you to show emotions, in this case several ones, it's a huge compliment to it. The story is fantastic. The ending could have gone differently but I like when you have to think about how it's going on yourself. That also makes a movie fantastic, when it gets you to think about the rest.

This film is definitely a must see. I don't often tell friends you HAVE TO watch this and that movie but I will with this one. It's simple, yet amazing.

Maybe genuine, but not absorbing, portrayal of millennial romance
lssking10 February 2013
I appreciate natural dialogue and personal interactions captured on film, as this one succeeds in. There aren't the contrivances you see in most Hollywood romances. The lead characters do have chemistry, and it's realistically tentative rather than the lightning-bolt kind. But I just didn't find the them interesting enough to recommend this movie. The viewer isn't really given enough background to form a strong feeling for the male protagonist, just shown that he's in a very precarious situation. And the female character has a strong SoCal intonation and does that thing with the breathless laugh mid-sentence. I just couldn't get invested.

Incredible! Life is beautiful -- even with a brain tumor
juliaduncan9 March 2011
The delicate subject matter of this film is beautifully rendered by writer/director Conrad Jackson. The serious theme is there but the overall tone is one of hope, and the beauty of life wins out over its unpredictability.

Jackson's cinematography enables us to feel the passage of time differently, and he takes us on a journey through a young man's (potentially) last night with simple events that exemplify how precious life is.

The two main actors are endearingly naive, but with depth and complexity beyond their years. Oh yeah, and apparently it was filmed in 14 days - impressive!

I look forward to seeing much more from these actors, from the writers, and from director Conrad Jackson!

Mumblecore. For Pretentious W*nkers by Pretentious W*nkers.
ranndino13 April 2013
Not exactly sure how this made it into the top 10 of my Netflix queue, but my guess is that I read an article about it getting 9 awards from various film festivals.

Two things I have concluded from this experience.

One. When any movie's plot has the slightest possibility of belonging to the "mumblecore" genre make sure to read a few critical reviews PRIOR to watching it. If the term "mumblecore" is used in any of them stay the hell away!

Two. I need to give up on movies easier. Being a huge film buff I tend to stick with a movie even when it's quite obvious in the first 15 minutes that it's absolute garbage. Somehow I keep hoping that it's going to get better. The first and last rule of "mumblecore" is that it never does.

The premise of the movie is that a twenty-something super dorky looking male who was diagnosed with a potentially fatal disease meets a beautiful twenty-something woman, they fall in love and spend a day together. Sounds like it could be interesting, but what the premise doesn't include is that these two are incredibly boring people who have absolutely nothing of consequence to say to each other. They don't talk about movies, politics, college, traveling, music, families or anything else of any value. Their whole interaction consists of completely inane subjects and they seem to be too cool to even pronounce words in a comprehensible way. At one point I tried turning on the subtitles to make out what the hell they were saying, but Netflix did not have them available for this excuse of a movie (which all hearing impaired people should be thankful for).

After watching it I found out that the main character was also one of the writers and producers. Now it made sense why the film was so unrealistic. It was his and every dorky man's fantasy. Just by showing up and existing he somehow got a very attractive girl to be so interested in him that she did all the work pursuing him. There isn't any point in the movie where he does ANYTHING to gain her interest (possibly with an exception of showing up at her art show). He mumbles about nothing and acts pathetic the entire time and we all know that this is the way to win the heart of a gorgeous young woman, don't we?

Neither one of them displays much emotion until the end and overall the film, which was shooting for sympathy, made me want his fatal decease to be infectious because neither one of these two, (or the people they hung out with, for that matter) were gonna contribute anything to the world. The only reason I can think of why this film is rated highly on Netfix is because other hipsters (read excruciatingly boring, entirely useless people who at the same time think they're better than everyone) can identify with these characters.

The pretentiousness of the film is what got me the most. The makers clearly think it's about something deep when it's about nothing at all. The whole script could've fit on a napkin ("let's have two twenty-somethings schlep around and mumble utter nonsense for a day").

I could've made a more interesting film by following a homeless guy with a camcorder.

Excellent film
jason-levin198527 March 2012
I saw this film at Cinequest in 2011 and I was truly amazed. First of all, it was almost impossible to get a seat. All three screenings were sold out, there was a huge buzz about this film. I have to say that the film lived up to the hype and the festival judges agreed giving it the Special Jury Award. It was masterfully executed through and through. The acting was stellar. The two leads were so believable. It felt like I was watching two people truthfully falling for each other. The direction was spot on. The way it was shot was so realistic. I felt like I was a fly on the wall watching their lives. I gave this film 10 stars and can't wait for it to release. Do not miss the opportunity to check out Falling Overnight when it comes your way. I will definitely go to see it again!

too many bad elements
farron3416 February 2013
While I enjoyed the concept of the film, I found the lousy acting to be distracting. The dialogue seemed forced at times and very unnatural considering the circumstances. Also, not sure if I liked the ending, I would have liked to at least get a clue as to what may come in the future.

Cinematically, most (if not all) of the camera work was hand-held, even static shots were shaky – which could work in a more intense film, but this film was quite uneventful. And speaking of static, I thought all of the characters were very one-dimensional, and none seemed to show any signs of real growth.

Thoughtful, Sensitive love story
videoviews529 July 2012
The basic premise of "Falling Overnight" might make some think that the film is a real downer but it's really not, sure the general plot seems bleak but there's more to the film once it gets going.

The film is about Elliot, a 22 year-old who has been diagnosed with brain tumor. Between the headaches, nausea, sensitivity to light and not sleeping Elliot is certainly not in a very good frame of mind and the uncertainly of his future makes it that much more difficult. That is until he meets the beautiful Chloe at her day job when he stops in to buy a drink. He notices an ad for an art show, Chloe's art show and after they chat a bit she invites him to come. With his surgery due the next day Elliot decides to go since it will help get his mind off things, once there the two begin talking a bit more and seem to hit it off. The evening is full as they go bike riding and attend a few parties with friends of Chloe. What starts off as a growing friendship soon begins to develop into love between the two. As morning draws closer Elliot decides to tell Chloe about his surgery which she doesn't take very well at first but soon she becomes supportive and the two spend some very meaningful and loving time together.

What I really liked about the film was that it kept a positive attitude even tough no one is sure of Elliot's future. The film deals more with the time the two young lovers spend together, even though it's a very short time it's time well spent. I also loved the cinematography and they way it placed me right there in the moment.

Another reason I loved the film so much was it's cast, Parker Croft is simply amazing as Elliot, his performance makes you fell each and every emotion and it allows you to create a bond with him. Emilia Zoryan is also terrific as Chloe, this was her acting debut but you would never know it by watching her performance. Emilia is a very beautiful and talented young actress and I hope to see a lot more of her in the future. The rest of the cast also did a great job playing their roles as well.

"Falling Overnight" is a thoughtful love story told in a sensitive way. It handles the subject in a classy and loving way and it tells us that life is beautiful so live each day as if it's your last. A heart-felt film about finding love when you least expect it. An award winning film and for good reason, Director, Conrad Jackson shows great ability in telling a warm and realistic tale, this is a very impressive debut and I look forward to seeing what he and the amazing cast of actors all have coming next.

Young love with a twist
tylerwalker181 January 2013
I try to give all of the movies I see an honest, unbiased rating. For some reason I feel weird giving this a 9/10 rating, just because I didn't know what to expect going into it. I saw the trailer a few months ago and put it in my watch list for later. Today I saw it on Netflix and without any anticipation and on impulse just put it on. Along with an estimated $50,000 budget, Parker Croft and Emilia Zoryan are young, virtually unknown actors, which initially sparked my interest. I was excited to see some new talent and was interested in what was made out of the given budget. This is a story of young love. It is raw, awkward, emotional, funny, sad, tragic and most importantly realistic. Elliot (Croft) and Chloe (Zoryan) cross paths and connect instantly. Chloe is a photographer and invites Elliot to her art show that night, and from there a love story begins to unravel. From parties and shows to a small kick back in the hills and we meet different groups of interesting friends that are out partying and enjoying the night, all while Elliot and Chloe become closer and closer in a matter of hours. It really took a little bit for the characters to grow on me. Through the social awkwardness and little mishaps I finally begun to really like the characters. I took into account Elliot's condition and was very interested in how he would reveal this to Chloe. You learn about this in the beginning of the movie and as the story progresses the condition turns into an overbearing secret. I was anticipating the revelation of this secret to Chloe and I thought it was executed perfectly. This is a simple and realistic love story between two young lovers captured in a sort of cinéma vérité style in the glowing and active city of Los Angeles.

It just pulled at my heart in the sweetest fashion. Like meeting an old friend for the first time.
mavensageriver1 November 2013
I adore this movie! I was surprised at how much it made me feel (and not in a sad way). It just pulled at my heart in the sweetest fashion. Like meeting an old friend for the first time.

It has a laid back pace without being boring. It is sweet, sentimental, raw, intimate and most of all authentic. The actors were perfect, I felt like I was right there with them.

From the two main characters chemistry, to the sharing of the good, the bad, the awkward and the completely random. It feels like I'm hanging out with my own quirky friends, going on a first date with someone I'm wholly enamored with, sharing real life with real people. Nothing about this script feels… scripted. It just feels real.

I like Hollywood movies but this was definitely a nice refreshing change from your standard box office prescription for success, without trying too hard to be different. This is reflected wholeheartedly in the ending which to me was perfect. I won't spoil it for you, I'll just say that it's like life, one day at a time.

P.S. I haven't seen a lot of indie films but this may have gotten me started. I found this movie after seeing Parker Croft as cute Lost Boy Felix in the series Once Upon A Time.

The question here isn't "Is this film good?" (it is... it's very good) the question is why?
parker-413-487383 July 2012
Warning: Spoilers
The question here isn't "Is this film good?" (it is... it's very good) the question is why? Why is Falling Overnight different from films like Restless or Like Crazy. I think the answer is simple... It's real, it's not faking real. If you go to the cinema to be bombarded like an amusement park patron you will hate this film. The Falling Overnight ride is much more subtle and should not be subjected to the crude tastes of those who seek distraction for their movie fix. However if you have a pallet for the intimate, the vulnerable and the honest then you have found your next meal. There is no dish more satiating to those desires then Falling Overnight.

A really wonderful movie.
garyquicker7 July 2018
This movie was a choice on Amazon. I had noticed it but never watched it. Finally, I did watch it. I loved it.

This is a story about a young man who is going to have brain surgery the next morning at 10am. She is working in an ice cream parlor. They meet. What happens between 3 pm until 10 am is both romantic and tragic.

My take on Elliot and Cloye is somewhat different than other reviews. They meet in the ice cream parlor after Eliott had to stop in the parking lot to throw up. He goes in and asks Cloye if he can use the bathroom. She hands him the key. She is attracted to him. He is in another zone. Imagine you were there knowing you would probably die the next day. He wants something sweet to drink. She makes it. They talk. She is having a showing of her pictures that evening and invites him. He admires one of her pictures and leaves with that picture. He has no intention of going.

That evening he is sitting on his wooden floor surrounded by trash bags full of his stuff. A lonely scene. He decides to go to the showing just to do something. Clowe is surprised but happy to see him. She invites him to eat at a mexican restaurant. (I know, eating mexican food before brain surgery. But, hey, it's a movie)

I really love the restaurant scenes. They enter into one of those kind of goofy conversations men and women have when they first meet. He says stuff that is really not funny but Cloye laughs anyway. It is clear during these scenes that Cloye is becoming really attracted to Elliot. In fact, by the end of the meal I think Cloye is in love with Elliot.

What happens outside the restaurant is amazing. I don't remember a scene that conveyed so much meaning. They are parting, Elliot is saying the usual;"I had a nice time, thanks a lot". and some goofy stuff to go along with that. Cloye looks somewhat amused at his awkwardness. She knows at that point that she really does love him and has no intention of letting him go. She enters her phone number into his cell and tells him to call. She then steps forward and puts her arms around him. For me, this embrace is the magic moment. The look on Cloyes face as she embraces Eliott says it all. As she leaves she looks back with a little wave and a loving look.

Think of it. She is leaving with a wonderful feeling. She is in love and is looking forward to a wonderful relationship with Elliot. Elliot on the other hand knows he will never see Cloye again. He sits in his car and cries.

And it goes from there. The ending is for you to decide.
