Because he is sweet and clueless Ray takes Damon and Darby out jogging. Darby thinks Jessica put him up to it because of her fat-acceptance support group but Damon admits it was him. He's afraid Darby's going to die of sleep apnea.
Darby and Damon, during their jog, confront their father with some harsh truths including the idea that if he was in high school with them he would not be their friend since he's a good-looking jock and they are, well, not that.
(Two more repulsive-looking progeny it would be hard to imagine!)
He claims they would totally be buds and points to Tanya as a "friend" who is interesting and different. Later, when he's getting his picture taken in the school hallway with the ball team, in new uniforms he paid for with his "ho'" money, he sees his kids at their lockers and wonders if they may be right.
So he invites Tanya to a movie with him and the kids to prove that he's down with different. They go to what looks like a dreadful foreign flick and Tanya ends up having a conversation with Damon about his sexuality. He doesn't identify himself as gay but says he's not willing to put himself in a box labeled by someone else. Tanya applauds this.
Meanwhile in pimp world Tanya continues to have trouble with Lenore, who is driving her bonkers. She continues to be rude to Tanya and tell her she deserves no money. Tanya meanwhile thinks Lenore broke into her apartment and replaced her Lanvin sweater with a cheap Lankin knockoff. Tanya goes to see Charlie to ask what she should do with this mounting problem. He says to "take care of her." He seems to be implying that Tanya should kill her but then he talks about doing it with "mind bullets" when the time comes.
After another disastrous meeting Tanya freaks out and yells at Lenore that she's not going to take it anymore saying she can play hardball too. Her version of hardball is to steal Lenore's dog. (Which she later brings to the movies in a handbag.) It turns out it didn't have the desired effect, however, because when she goes to return the dog, Lenore has already bought an identical one.
Adding insult to injury Tanya's former colleague Patty is now her boss and she threatens to fire Tanya unless she gives her a free date with Ray.
At the movie Tanya confesses the bind that she's in and says she can pay Ray $200 dollars, which he, nicely enough, agrees to do it for $250. But when he's having sex with Patty she's so irritating he realizes that even though he's getting paid, he's still doing some paying of his own.
Jessica is feeling unmoored. After her disastrous performance at Darby's protest she has an equally unpleasant Scrabble night with Ronnie and a couple of his doctor friends, including the female one he recently reconnected with.
They patronize her Scrabble jitters and generally make her feel dumb. Ronnie confesses during the game, however, that his business is off 40 percent. This further rattles Jessica who takes it upon herself to do some yard work, much to Ronnie's dismay since it gives off the wrong appearance.
Instead he says what he really wants Jessica to do is have his baby. She is flabbergasted since, when they were dating, he said he didn't want children and certainly not the best idea when business is down. He's changed his mind. She doesn't know what to say. He points out that his doctor friend is good at being a wife.
Later, Jessica calls Ray from the bowling alley sounding blue. He's just finishing up a date and is surprised because he thought she canceled. He surprises her and meets her there and sees that she's sad. She says she just doesn't know what to do and apologizes because she realizes she was hard to be married to. He says he wants to offer whatever help he can. They have a lingering hug and who should walk up as they do? Lenore. Jessica called her after she thought Ray wasn't coming.
Jessica introduces them and they pretend to be strangers.
