Had me laughing
MyBoss1 April 2011
I'm an American living in Japan, but I don't really watch too much Japanese TV. That was until one of my friends turned my on to "Unubore Deka." The show was about halfway through it's run when I moved to Japan, so I went back and caught myself up to where I needed to be, and followed it from there, and I'm sure glad I did.

"Unubore Deka," or "Narcissistic Detective," tells of one conceited police detective who can't help but fall in love with women who ultimately turn out to be criminals. Of course, there's plenty of comedy, a bit of drama (not so much as many other popular J-Dramas, however), and an overall fun storyline with a decent arc.

What made "Unubore Deka" stand out most to me was the character interaction between the main character himself, Unubore, and his 4 bar friends. Each character has their own personality, and although some characters were more developed than others, when together they create a hilarious atmosphere of a bunch of guys shooting the breeze and just having fun guy talk at the bar, something all guy love. Also, (but not really related to the score of the show) Unubore happens to live in my neighborhood, Tokorozawa, Saitama, in the show, which of course is fun because I can say he lives in the same neighborhood as me! :)

All in all, a really fun show, and I'm actually a bit sad it's over. "Hey, hey, hey!"

comedy is difficult to do right - but this one has it!!!

Warning: Spoilers
even more so in Japanease drama - as really 95% of the time it's drama not comedy.

I really lucked out when I pick to try this TV series out of the blue. Only my 3rd Japanaes TV series. Now there are lots of subtitles to read for a comedy. They are not just going for slap sticks , which it's got. But also sarcasm, wordplay, reference to other show, and chemistry. The show doesn't have black or deadpan - which in my opinion are the hardest comedy style to do.

Even as a non-Japanese speaker, I find this funny as they are crazy in this show. The main character, is a police detective , he has the habit of falling in love with the female guest star in every episode. And his facial expression while doing this is way way wayyyyy overdone but is absolutely priceless.

The problem is knowing that the guest female lead will be the perpretrator of crime in every episode itself turns the crime genre on it's head. So where's the fun? But I'm not giving it away, as the show still needs to find out the how and why.

The funny thing is when Unubore goes to do the arrest, he literally goes through this song and dance. But also ask the killer to marry him instead !!!! On top, there are many a side notes. He meets 4 other hapless single dudes regularly in this bar. One is a professor who studies attraction of the opposite sexes. One a photographer, one a baker/chef, one a struggling actor - who plays the dectective friend - the cop (unubore) in a show - so a show inside the show itself !!!! twisted.

Oh man. And i've only started. te cutting, editing is unrelenting - combine with the script and acting, absolutely not a dull moment.
