Gorgeous Cinematography, Effects, Not Much New Information
caroline-31721 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
My excitement to see the Montauk Chronicles was spurred on by a radio programme on the release of the internet movie earlier this month. In that programme, the organiser was interviewed and a great deal of information was shared. I was so excited to pay for and download the movie to learn more about the Montauk Project. I researched the film and learnt that it had been a decade or more in the making, having been crowdsourced. I would imagine, then, that there were quite a few people interested in hearing some information about the subject of the Montauk Project.

SPOILER ALERT:

While the cinematography, lead ups, suspense, scariness and special effects were amazing in the film, I cannot recommend the film because I actually learnt more information in the radio programme than I did in the film. I was left feeling that perhaps the truth that is "missing" is that select persons have been implanted with false memories of the Montauk Project, or, more likely, that it was a psy op to mislead us from something else that happened on the site. My opinion du jour is that there were several consipirators, some of whom the filmmaker had to ply over a decade, who felt that they could promote their own products, selves or sales of their own materials based upon an elaborate tale. You may think me horribly harsh to say this based upon the allegations of abject cruelty in the film by those who appeared but do, as the filmmaker suggests, look at the expressions and body language of those speaking. Do you see wincing, agitation, hand wringing, nails into palms, sweating or pupils dilating? No? Me neither. SPOILER ALERT: It's another MOCKUMENTARY. I feel foolish and it's not the first time. Filmmakers who think we like to be titillated this way need to study the victims of sociopaths to see that it is neither "entertaining", nor is good fun. To those of us interested in such subjects, it's a right slap in the face.

It is said that it took 10 years and crowdsourcing to produce the film. 10 years and such a slapdash job at evidence, finding others who had similar experiences? One need only see the complaints of crowdsource contributors up until this year to see the anger they have had until recently about the lack of production of the film. (No, I'm not an investor, I was only introduced to this through a C2C radio programme just this month.)

Would it take 10 years to produce this film? No, IMHO. Is it an overproduced, over-SFXed rebuttal to the lack of a product of the crowdsourcing for the past 10 years? My uneducated guess is: yes. See the first half hour and see if you don't chafe at the overproduction and lack of documentary content. I'm not referring to documentation of the Montauk project, only to my perception that it would have been better to hear more unedited reports from the experiencers in the film, so as to make our own conjectures, as the filmmaker asks us, as to whether the subjects of the film are cracked, telling the truth or just making fun of us all for paying for the film, rather than the SFX.

As they say, your milage may vary.

The Montauk Disappointment
greymkraken24 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
tl;dr Wanted to love it, struggled to finish it.

The good: For an indie production, it was well shot, with good audio. It is, in theory, a documentary about the different claims regarding the various "Montauk projects" discussed in paranormal media.. It interviews several notable personalities involved in the body of Montauk lore, without derision, or apparent positive bias. It wasn't actually the 4 hours I thought I had been watching it.

The less good: Finding a well executed documentary on any fringe topic, is like finding a unicorn, washing your car for you. Those that achieve any degree of success as a cohesive and engaging narrative provide a context for the different interviews, use recreation to support that, and give you a good story. I was hoping for a good overview of all of the extraordinary claims about secret projects that crossed the border into science fiction at Montauk from the last 6 decades. You can either believe all of the tales told about Montauk in the alternative literature, or treat them with complete skepticism. The middle ground as a viewer is to treat it as folktales. I wasn't expecting Montauk Chronicles to prove anything to me. I was expecting to leave it with a decent grasp of the stories related to it, and a sense of how the subjects giving interviews had contributed to its lore. That scope could have been sweeping, or parochial. I had heard or seen interviews with the main three subjects, and have a passing familiarity with tales related to Camp Hero that are a staple of what I'll call the genre. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't have had the slightest clue as to why I should care about their stories, and what those stories really were. I find it tragic honestly. Regardless of your opinion of anyone's authenticity Bielek, Nichols, and Swerdlow, have been contributing to Montauk lore for decades, and what ended up on screen offers scant satisfaction. Those guys won't be around forever, and once they're gone they will become part of the great continuum of rehashed references in future works, and it will become increasingly difficult to know those stories in their words. Aside from that, a lot of beach scenes, a lot of dash cam, and recreations that didn't help me understand anything. And they were interminable.I have no issue with recreation, or a measure of theatrical license, these were just un-needed.

For aggressive skeptics, if it had been a better production, you could hate it more, for better reasons. For true believers who won't criticise anything in paranormal media ever, I am obviously a disinformation agent, and my review should be discarded.

What a ridiculous boring movie
danieletrnal10 July 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Wow. I managed to sit through an hour and a half of this, but it felt like 6 hours. It started out well enough, and I even thought it was very professional (early on). But then we get to these endless re-enactments that go on and on, accompanied by classical music (likely because it is free and in the public domain)... and the visuals were really headache-inducing at times. Three clearly insane guys are interviewed throughout---a really old guy, a really fat old guy and a guy with a beard and an earring. The guy with the beard and earring is probably the absolute nuttiest of the 3. This guy has been abducted and abused by aliens and then abducted and abused by the government. I stopped watching with half an hour to go, but it seems likely he was further abducted and abused by some other group too. He did share one bit of useful info (and this might be a spoiler): You know those gray aliens? No? Of course not, because you are probably sane, but the gray ones are gray and have really big eyes, bad teeth and drool-- according to the re-enactment--- Well those aren't even really aliens, they're just regular old human fetuses that are being mind controlled. So, you know, that's useful to know. I suspect he is truly delusional and not completely lying, although on some level I think he knows none of this nonsense really happened. It does sound like he may have been abused as a child though. But not by aliens. Or big-eyed human fetuses. I could go on and on (and on). I enjoy weird conspiracy theory stuff, and if this had been condensed to 90 minutes with a quickened pace, it might have been OK. But this thing drags like you wouldn't believe. Seek out a 45 minute TV show that explores this instead. Or just pick a different utterly ridiculous conspiracy theory to look into, as this one is wackier than most. (But I really do hope that bearded guy gets on some medication or finds himself a good therapist. He seems legitimately depressed and deluded. The two old guys just seem like they figure "hey, I'm old and I'm just gonna say whatever crazy nonsense pops into my head for whoever will listen")

For Anyone Who's Done Any Real Research Into The Montauk Project This Won't Cut The Mustard!
Ningishzida9999 February 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Not worth the 3 years wait for this documentary!

It should have been a LOT better, the 2-star rating was for Al & Preston, certainly NOT for Stewart Swerdlow. As after doing a bit of research on him, it's more likely than not that he's a conman/dis-informer/mind control slave PROGRAMMER!

Google - "Stewart Swerdlow Scam" or "Stewart Swerdlow Conman"

I've researched The Montauk Project a lot, I've watched possibly every YouTube video related to the subject, I've listened to all Michael Houtzager's audio interviews with Al Bielek, Preston Nichols, Duncan Cameron, Stewart Swerdlow & Larry James, & I've read all of Peter Moon's & Preston's books, & Stewart Swerdlow's too...

This documentary doesn't go deep enough into the rabbit hole, & I imagine for a first timer it would be difficult to grasp the full picture. As they should have gone into more details about the project & the events, for example...

The Nazi's, & the Nazi gold connection is never fully explained & mentioned, Duncan Cameron is only discussed very briefly, the creature released at the end of the Montauk Project is only touched upon, & the pictures of it are never shown! Al & Duncan going to Mars & time travel is only mentioned VERY briefly too...!?!?! The connection to The Philadelphia Project is never mentioned either... There is so much missed out; it really can't be taken seriously for anyone researching the subject!!!

The movie part was grossly exaggerated too, there's an alien scene, whereby a "grey alien" has fangs with saliva dribbling down from them as if it's a vampire or something...

I mean com'on...!?!?

It's just insulting people's intelligence, & disgracing Al & Preston's accounts.

Sounds petty, but it's attention to detail, as this is a massively important & horrifying story that needs to be taken seriously, & retold as accurately as possible for the survivor's sake, & the unfortunate people who didn't make it. Especially when the movie took so long to make...........

In short, it was a big disappointment; it could have been done a LOT better, & does no credit whatsoever to the original story... It's nothing but a flashy attempt at a documentary trying to win an award, & make a few dollars off the back of Al & Preston's story at the same time...

Don't waste your life... Save your money! Or buy beer instead........

Seriously biased movie mainly fit for conspiracy-nuts...
leon-smoothy8 April 2015
I stumbled upon this movie, saw a decent rating and saw it, not because I'm a conspiracy-freak, but because it seemed quite interesting, as any thriller could be, but this was a documentary.

I was very skeptic when reading about the contents though, and I became more and more so the further I watched.

Without spoiling anything here, I felt this to be very biased. I have no doubt that despicable experiments has and are being made on humans BY humans, it's not hard to see what drug abuse/mental illness can result in, and that drugs and torture can completely destroy a person, for sure. A modern example is said to be the so called "MK-Ultra program" run by CIA in the 60-70's, said to have experimented with mind control, involving torture by sleep deprivation, drugs, electricity and occultism, and the US government has even made public apologies (Bill Clinton in the 90's) for things done to it's citizens in these fields, sadly leaving many scarred remnants of human beings left to fend for themselves.

But this is far from proof of aliens from other galaxies. A relevant example is how schizophrenia works (and sleep paralysis), when the brain basically cannot separate a dream-state from being awake, and thus producing images for a person that is basically like watching one movie at the same time and viewfield as another, blending sounds and visions so that the person cannot decide what is what. The Nazis in Germany started many of these kinds of horrible experiments during their rule, which then was continued in the US, Soviet Union and DDR. What has been shown though is basically that it is far more effective and reliable to use mass-psychosis, like Hitler did (successfully with HitlerJugend and SS)and like we see today when governments or media can whip up horrendous behavior in humans. It is simply not effective to break down a human being to a mental wreck with drugs and torture, expecting effective results as a field agent, for example. It is far more effective to use lures such as money, power and a feeling of being part of an important nationalistic/idealistic cause than to make people sick.

I'm not saying all these people interviewed are liars and making this up, just that very scary things can be produced by different means to make people 100% sure that things is physically real and has occurred.

A very unnerving and scary technique are those involving "repressed memories". Late scientific proof has been made showing that people, under certain circumstances, can be convinced that they have been experiencing and being guilty of deeds that is simply planted by psychiatric personnel, often with "help" by medication. It has therefore, as an example, quite recently been deemed not reliable at all as proof by the justice systems in many countries.

It is also documented that several US presidents (from the 80's and forwards) and high government officials, has employed so called "psychics" and "paranormal mediums" as important parts of their decision making during large conflicts, which is seriously worrying, if anything!

So this is sadly, in my opinion, food for conspiracy fanatics, and not at all to be considered objective material. But, knowing this, it could well enough be entertaining for some...

Boring and Dumb
arfdawg-113 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
The Plot: A study of the dark legends that surround the Camp Hero Air Force Base in Montauk, Long Island.

This is one dismal movie that only a psychotic stoner could like.

It's slow and boring and filled with overly dramatic liturgy and music.

The special effects are silly and the action is moronic.

They interview a bunch of feeble geriatric patients who look like they have one foot in the grave and are three sheets to the wind.

There is ONE person interviewed whose face is blurred and it's obvious he's a scripted plant. You can tell he's like 30 when all the others are 300!!

God this was the longest 110 minutes of my life.

Truly mind blowingly awful
carol-2074912 September 2015
this film did not attempt to supply any meaningful info about what may or may not have happened at Montauk and was truly the worst film I have ever seen! it was simply an excuse for a demented (if talented) guy to portray his weird mindset and the 3 main 'knowledgeable sources' were to my mind certifiably insane and did not offer one shred of useful information, nor indeed one shred of evidence.

it started well enough, but then went nowhere logical at all - I only put myself through the agony of watching to the end see if Garentano offered any facts to suggest or deny any wrongdoing, but he offered no conclusions whatsoever.

the only science fiction here was in the minds of those sad folk who featured in the film!

Nothing impressive, but still entertaining
rprince-832-629424 March 2015
-Montauk Chronicles (2015) movie review: -Montauk Chronicles is a documentary following a series of 'alien' events at the town of Montauk. Basically it is a UFO documentary.

-It was 'aight. I don't care much for documentaries like this, but I was at least entertained.

-The story was true, but definitely told in a biased way.

-The pace was surprisingly good.

-The people that were in it were interesting, but not that interesting. They were real, but also very biased. You can tell they had already formulated their opinion, so when the film opened with an opening stating it would tell an unbiased story, and then only interviewed the people that believe it, it kinda lied.

-The music was not great and sounded really synthetic, but that also fit an alien film.

-Basically if you can be entertained by documentaries where you don't buy into anything anybody ways, but are somewhat interested by it, Montauk Chronicles would be worth checking out on Netflix or anywhere else you can see it without paying for it.

Just Not Good.
banglainey9 August 2015
I was hoping for a lot more from this, but the directing style is just not good at all. It starts off like an actual documentary, but then goes into a cinematic narrative, but then also switches back to interviews done documentary-style, and then narrative, and then cinematic theatrical recreations and special effects and sometimes there is nothing going on but still images of weird creepy stuff with loud noises.

This style was just not pleasant to watch. The director needs to pick a theme and stick to it, it's almost like he made 3 different movies in one and the result is just not good. I enjoy bad horror movies, I enjoy crappy documentaries, and I enjoy really nouveau-art type horror where its mainly creepy images and strange music and very little else, but all 3 combined just did not work for me. I kept getting into the documentary part, and then it would switch and I'd be like, darn I was enjoying that. Then they would have a really artistic visual/musical scene, and I'd get into it, and then it would suddenly end and the boring narrative would return.

The movie itself is total garbage, there's little to back it up, and the 3 eyewitness interviewees seem to provide no evidence of any sort. I guess the main old guy they are interviewing is actually an author who wrote stories about this Montauk Project claiming truth, but at the time his books were heralded as fiction, and of course there is no one else coming forward saying any of it is true except for another old guy who seemed senile, and some young guy who claimed to be a psychic genius of some sort who survived all these crazy experiments involving aliens, time travel, psychic warfare, and conjuring monsters into existence with their brains (but if that's the case why isn't he solving the mysteries of the universe and instead just being a regular, depressed looking guy. No really though, I think the other 2 interviewees were probably just fans of the book series and probably senile themselves).

At one point, one of the old, senile men claims there were projects like this going on in every major city in the USA, and that probably a hundred thousand people died from this experiment. That's pretty far-fetched, since only 3 guys seem to remember it. And I'm still not clear what exactly they were experimenting on- seems like they said every sort of conspiracy was going on.

I mean, let's just pick one conspiracy and stick to it, guys, cmon now, we can't do ALL the conspiracies in one film/documentary/slideshow of creepy images with loud and uncomfortable noises intertwined with live interviews and abstract recreations intertwined, it would have been better to just pick one focal point of the film and one directing style.

The one thing that really, really, REALLY bothered me about this movie was the background music during the talking parts. I liked it, BUT, it was way too loud, which made me feel like it was a really low-quality budget movie that nobody actually checked the sound levels on. I mean, it was so bad that at times, during the interviews, I couldn't make out what these mush mouthed old men were saying because the background music would reach a crescendo and drown them out!

Gave a 2 rather than a 1 because it did have a little bit of onteresting parts in it, and it did have some good visuals and was a little creepy.

Dumb, boring, new age conspiracy story
megatom644 August 2015
This movie is basically just an overly long interview with Stewart Swerdlow. He recalls tales of torture, mind-control, traveling through time to collect Jesus' blood. It is all just very very dumb. Who really buys into this stuff? I sometimes like these kind of documentaries because they will have interesting reenactments or are able to create an interesting creepy vibe. This movie doesn't really. The "creepy" segments play out like a wannabe Nine Inch Nail video. Also they will usually have just like one shred of evidence. Really the only evidence shown in the film is a bunker that is on an old air force based. This isn't really evidence, they don't even try to go in there. Just really dumb stuff here, and not even presented in an interesting way.

Complete and utter twaddle
jake_fantom11 August 2015
Warning: Spoilers
If you are looking for a juicy conspiracy film featuring space aliens, evil government agencies, and nefarious human experiments... keep looking. This pathetic excuse for a documentary is an amateurish exercise in sheer idiocy. An assembly of the usual "eyewitnesses" spin fantastic and yet somehow utterly boring yarns about their experiences below ground in a sinister Air Force base where children are mind-controlled for unspecified reasons — all without a single shred of evidence to back up a single bizarre assertion. One of these talking heads, a bearded character named Swerdlow, is an obvious huckster who is apparently promoting some kind of pay-per-view scam he has concocted on a paranoiac members-only website. I have never seen a less credible presenter. Face it, folks, there are enough conspiracy/UFO/secret world government nut jobs out there for them to amount to a market! Anyway, top the whole thing off with a ludicrous high-tension soundtrack, a sound mix that sounds as if it was done by a ten-year-old, and a voice-over script that never uses a simple word when a bigger more pretentious-sounding word is available — and you've got the whole picture. Sooner or later all the usual suspects show up, the Illuminati, the Grays (who we are informed are actually just mind-controlled human fetuses!!!) — everything short of Dracula and the Wolf Man. And with all that going for it, the filmmaking is so plodding and repetitive that it's almost impossible to sit through more than a few minutes at a time. A truly shameful piece of... work.

Unwatchable trainwreck
Eddieb8210 August 2019
I would rather watch paint dry then to sit through that again. Has nothing to do with the subject. Awful narrative and storytelling techniques utilized throughout.

This guy needs to go back to film school or better yet just find something new to do all together. Horrible execution all around.

I've seen more stimulating work by kids with no money editing on iMovie.

VIEWER BEWARE. Save your time and money.

I Want To Believe!
emsky33312 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Three manchildren looking for attention tell a story of a government conspiracy so unbelievable it's unbelievable. I think the final nail in the coffin for me is where the film "documentary" actually turns into a movie script, in which these guys alone stood against both government and extraterrestrial and brought the whole project crashing down *eyeroll*.

I do believe that insane experiments did and do take place and I think these guys (two being stereotypical conspiracy nuts) are cashing in on that attention.

An honest documentation of the Camp Hero Legends with a fresh approach!
starchild86-267-62441418 March 2015
I got a chance to watch Montauk Chronicles at a screening they had in NYC at the Phillip K. Dick film festival and my friends and I LOVED IT! I've been following Alfred Bielek for years watching everything I could about Camp Hero and I have to say I was impressed with Christophers interpretation of the stories these men were saying. The quality of the film is top notch and the visuals were STUNNING! I've seen everything on this subject but nothing comes close to this. The stories of the Montauk boys was truly terrifying and the idea that this could be happening definitely had us talking afterwards. I got a chance to meet Christopher after the Q&A and he seemed like a really nice guy. We had a great time at the festival and I highly recommend this documentary to anyone who doesn't just want to watch the same old talking heads format. Good job!! :)

An amazing work of art.
witchspy14 September 2015
I purchased Montauk Chronicles last month and I wasn't really knowing what to expect. I saw the trailer after hearing the director speak on Coast To Coast AM. I'm a HUGE movie fan. I was born in 1954 and I've had many years to absorb and watch each following decade of movies unfold before my eyes. I'm really turned off by most movies of today. It seems like we lost something in recent years. So here comes Montauk Chronicles a docudrama that covers the tale of three men who say they were part of secret government experiments in the 1970's I was immediately taken by the images/cinematography in the movie. It seems like every frame was pondered over and frankly is quite beautiful. But after a while I realized I've never seen anything quite like this movie before. The central story is good and the interviews are interesting but I was sincerely focused on the craftsmanship in this film. The editing, camera work, creative decisions are all the work of an artist. It's honestly some of the best science fiction or horror images put on film that I've seen in a VERY long time. As for the topic covered. I think the men could be telling the truth about this experiment. They're interesting enough to listen to. It's really the movie as a whole that takes the front seat for me. Bravo. I cannot wait to see what this director makes next.

Wonderful Art and Documentary
anykinds21 August 2017
I ordered Montauk Chronicles after hearing about it on line.

The movie was extremely well constructed throughout and it looked entirely beautiful.

Clearly great care went into the whole thing.

I've never actually seen anything quite like it to be honest.

I also appreciate the non biased approach of the makers.

They didn't shove their point of view down my throat or try to convince me of anything.

It was an involved and rich two hours.

I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a completely different kind of documentary.

I loved how they mixed movie scenes in with the interviews.

It's terrific. I will revisit my disc.

The best example of the "Montauk Project" to this date.
trailmixer14 September 2015
I've been an avid researcher of this story since the very first book came out and I can assure anyone with the slightest interest that this movie is superior to anything that's been written about the situation... ever.

It's as if the director brought the books to life in a way that made perfect sense. A little history of the Montauk Project begins with Preston Nichols first book. In comparison to the movie it doesn't even contain a fraction of the information or emotion. The movie was very well made and I can't think of a better movie of its type. The director chose not to focus on the tangential stories such as the Philly Experiments or Operation Paperclip but that just left more for the subjects to talk about MONTAUK. I'm interested in seeing where other directors take the Montauk thing but as of right now this is the only movie on the subject and it is tremendous. Great job guys.

Montauk - A Dark Past's Constant Presence
michaelyoseph15 January 2021
Christopher Garetano is a master story teller who brought to our attention one story from the disturbing past of the U.S. Government. From what we know, the Government has been involved in the experimentation of people without their consent, or knowledge (MK-Ultra) - so is it so hard to believe that they would do the same with Montauk? Though it is difficult to find hard evidence, Garetano interviews multiple individuals who all speak of the same atrocities. Perhaps it is coincidence, but knowing the nature of our Government and its history, it is not difficult to believe them to be true.

Whether you believe it to be true or not, it is still fascinating and well done. The narrative, cinematography, music, color grading, and structure are all professional and ahead of their time. In fact, the hit series Stranger Things was going to be titled Montauk before they settled on the name we all know today. Stranger Things was undoubtedly inspired by Garetano's masterful vision and story.

Visually Stunning, Informative Film.
jill-hanson-261-56276819 August 2015
Christopher Garetano's Montauk Chronicles is one of the best documentaries I've seen, if not number one on that list.

As you would expect of any first-rate documentary, Montauk Chronicles more than delivers in the content department - with candid interviews of the men who were themselves subjected to this horrific project - but add to its unrivaled substance, Christopher Garetano's artistic vision and extraordinary attention to detail, and you have a true example of cinematic masterpiece.

Montauk Chronicles is undeniably visually stunning, almost immersive - more rich, polished and alluring than even the best that Hollywood has to offer with all of the many millions of dollars spent on mainstream movies who's only hope is to entertain. Christopher Garetano has distinguished himself as a master documentarian, having created with Montauk Chronicles not just a film, but an experience - and that in this day and age is a level of care and expertise not often exacted, even by those most honored, the appointed crowned royals of the filmmaking elite.

For Truth Seekers on any path, of any level of curiosity or experience, this is a MUST SEE FILM. MUST SEE. Watch it, then tell your friends to watch it.

A must see documentary on the Mk Ultra mind programming in Montauk. It's not asking your opinion, just watch it and learn from it. Well filmed and well put together. So glad I found it. True terror that is mind expanding and enlightening. A movie for the higher mind that shows what the US government got up to in the 70's onward.

Best Documentary I've seen in years!
bookah21224 February 2015
Aside from the outstanding cinematography, candid and honest interviews with the actual parties involved in the Montauk Project, and haunting narration you can see that director Christopher Garetano poured his heart and soul into this project. Delaying it's release and scraping the first version with his time, money and reputation on the line further back that he was dedicated to produce quality, well investigated, unbiased work. D o many documentarians have an angle or agenda they are pushing; not Garetano. He lets the viewer decide what is and isn't real based on what those who claim to have been involved report and compare it to historical fact in similar cases. He asks the viewer to join his journey, be aware of subtleties such as facial expressions and voice inflection and come to their own conclusion. This is the real deal, the cross road where horror and non fiction collide. I highly recommend viewing Montauk Chronicals.
