The concept of ‘masala’ in Indian cinema is one that many have written about, but the most spot-on description I have found lies on this blog, which states: The perspective on ‘masala’ today is essentially one of condescension where one somehow enjoys the movies while laughing at their ‘logical lapses’ or their ‘overblown’ sense of drama or even their ‘larger than life’ characters. In other words the cinema might be ‘consumed’ like junk food but must not be taken seriously. The description finds one of its apogees in the Singam film series, of which the third part is the one I will deal with in this article.

SI3(Singam 3) in Tamil
Starring: Suriya, Anushka Shetty, Shruti Haasan
Directed by Hari
Don’t let the agitated agile ambience of unlimited energy fool you. This is a work of illimitable laziness. The writing is slothful, so much so that it often as though the script is a pretext for the fights. The direction is a muddle of rapidly moving shots with no room for the dialogues and characters to grow. It chokes the breath out of the actors. The performances are so over-the-top, they topple over and fall into the territory of unintentional humour.
The overwrought film opens with a parliamentary session in Andhra Pradesh where there are name plates in front of political dummies with announcements like ‘Opposition Leader’.
There is a law-and-order and situation in Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu’s super-cop Singam must be brought in. At this point in the passionately heroic plot, the entire audience began to cheer,...

Gnanavel Raja's much-anticipated film Singam 3 starring Suriya Sivakumar is the latest victim to fall prey to piracy which has plauged the Indian film industry for years. The movie, which is the third instalment of the Tamil action-masala franchise Singam, was reportedly streamed online hours after it hit the theatres on February 9. Earlier, the illegal Tamil movie streaming site had claimed that it would be streaming the film on the day of its release. Some websites even announced on the social media platforms that they had the original print of the film, a day prior to its release, according to a report in DC. At the audio launch of Yaman, Gnanavel Raja lashed out at TamilRockers.com for releasing the pirated versions of his films online. To which the website responded and challenged the producer to mark the release date of the movie as he won't be able to stop them at any cost.

While Anushka hasn't done a any work in Hindi cinema, she's well known as a leading lady in both the Tamil and Telugu film industries. More recently she's been filming another period film, Rudramadevi, in which hers is the title character. Baahubali shares more than just an actress with Rudramadevi, the films also share Peter Hein, south India's most famous action choreographer and fashion plate, I'm sure we'll be seeing more from him as footage from Baahubali begins...

Chennai, June 2: Even though magic tricks are merely illusions, what differentiates one magic trick from the other is the way it's done. Likewise, films too are like magic tricks, and what differentiates a good film from a bad one is the way it's presented, says Tamil actor Suriya Sivakumar.

The last time we saw Kollywood's leading action star, Suriya, he was playing kung fu fighting conjoined twins in K.V. Anand's medical action thriller, Maattrraan. That film, while okay, never really delivered on the promise that is inherent in a medical action thriller about a pair of kung fu fighting conjoined twins. This time around Suriya is returning to a role that has become iconic in Singam 2. The first Singam film was a huge success in Kollywood, but inspired an even bigger success story with its Bollywood remake in 2011, Ajay Devgan's Singham. This time around it looks like more of the same, but the first one was ridiculously entertaining, so I'm okay with that. This first look teaser does exactly what it says on...

My love for Kollywood superstar Suriya is no secret. The guy is not only one of the buffest action heroes in Tamil Nadu, he also oozes charm and charisma like nobody's business. He managed to take the high concept disappointment 7aam Arivu and make it worth watching almost by himself. So, when Suriya is making a film, I keep my eyes and ears open for news. So, when I heard about Maatran, directed by Kv Anand, I was interested. However, soon after the announcement that Maatran was shooting, there was another announcement that Suriya would be following it up with the sequel to his megahit, Singam. At that point, to me, Maatran became "the film I have to wait through to get to Singam 2"....

Panaji, Dec 3: South Indian superstar Suriya Saturday said regional cinema had potential for success across the country, in the same manner in which 'Tanglish' song 'Why this Kolaveri di' has become the contemporary chant of the nation.
Suriya, who has starred in blockbusters like 'Ghajini' (in Tamil) and the Tamil version of 'Singam' was speaking as the chief guest at the concluding ceremony of the 42nd International Film Festival of India (Iffi) at Panaji.
'Regional cinema is not getting focus. Most of the West thinks that Indian cinema is Hindi cinema,' Suriya said.

In the first of a fortnightly column reviewing new Indian films out in the UK, Ryan Gilbey reviews Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and Singham
Welcome to the first in a fortnightly column reviewing new Indian movies on release in the UK. Indian cinema, and the dominant Hindi-language Bollywood most of all, is the silent success story of Britain's multiplexes. In 2009, more than half of the 20 highest-grossing foreign language films released here were produced or co-produced in India. And yet the attention Indian cinema receives outside specialist publications is negligible. You could say that Bollywood films in Britain were hiding in plain sight, if putting "Bollywood" and "plain" in the same sentence didn't feel like heresy. It would certainly be a shame if anyone were deterred from sampling Indian cinema by this lack of mainstream press; they would be denying themselves one of the richest cinematic food groups of all.

Tollywood’s hottie Anushka was much famous in Tamil film industry with her debut film ‘Rendu’. But later, the actress got literally busy with Telugu projects and couldn’t make her way back here. After a long interval, she has now decided to act in more Tamil films. Apparently, she has occupied a new bungalow in Chennai due to her continuous shooting schedules in the city.
Following the success of ‘Vettaikaran’ and ‘Singam’, the actress is now starring opposite Simbhu in the remake of Telugu movie ‘Vaanam’. She will be repeating the same role of original version while Simbhu will be seen in the role performed by Allu Arjun aka Bunny.
Sneha Ullal, who hasn’t so far acted in Tamil films makes her debut with this movie and she is the close friend of Simbhu. Now with two hot girls pairing with young superstar, Anushka has vowed to put...

Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Raghava Lawrence has been enjoying his privilege of being an excellent director. He has directed only few films and has made it bigger in both Tamil and Telugu film industry. His directorial ‘Muni’ was acclaimed as a commendable family entertainer with himself playing the lead character. Off the late, Raghava Lawrence got involved with acting offers that drenched him in absolute errors. Now after his recent film ‘Irumbu Kottai Murattu Singam’ not doing well at box office, the actor is making his comeback as a director. After ‘Mass’, he will be making a Telugu movie yet to be titled and heroine of the film is none other than his very own favorite Anushka Shetty with Prabhas donning the lead character.

Following an exceptional performance in Manirathnam’s ‘Raavanan’, the actor is now opting for such scripts that will be completely different. As we tend to hear it from the closer sources, it’s revealed that the actor is looking for a fast-paced commercial entertainer like Suriya starrer ‘Singam’. It seems that Boopathy Pandian has been making some alterations over the script.
Just as it was known before Vikram will be playing a cop’s role, which uses his brain rather than his muscle power. But now, the news is that the producers and actor are looking out to change the film’s title.
Somehow, the official confirmations will be made shortly as the first look will be published on all print Medias by next month.

Hottie Anushka didn’t have a better start in Kollywood as soon after the first film ‘Rendu’, she disappeared suddenly. Now the actress has made a stunning comeback in Tamil film industry with two consecutive hits – ‘Vettaikaran’ and Surya starrer ‘Singam’. Brimmed with the successful venture, the actress sets to perform a challenging role of a sex worker in Silambarasan’s upcoming film ‘Vaanam’.
Just as we have briefed enough about this film, it’s a remake of recent Telugu hit ‘Vedam’ that featured Allu Arjun along with Manoj Manchu and Anushka in lead roles. Since Manoj has been severely injured over his shoulders, Bharath will replace him and Anushka will repeat the same role.
Anushka was reported to be performing just an item number in this film, which is completely a rumor as she plays the female lead role and will appear all throughout the film.

Lakshmi Rai would have got herself drenched in absolute desolation. Of course, the actress being a self-publicity maniac of seeking fame with Ms Dhoni was disappointed on that buddy not inviting her for the marriage ceremony. But, she has found a new friend in Kollywood now and that’s none other than Lakshmi Rai. Recently, both of them shook legs together for an item number in Kalainyar Karunanidhi’s ‘Pen Singam’.
Impressed with her (the basis of impression remains unexplained), Raghava Lawrence signs this missy for his next bilingual film titled ‘Kaanjana’. The film is reported to be a supernatural thriller with a mystery revolving around ghost. So, who’s playing the ghost role this time? It’s none other than hottie Anushka. Gautaman BhaskaranTamil cinema is obsessed with idolising its hero, making him gigantically larger than life, awfully unrealistic and, in the bargain, making him monstrous and inhuman. Superstar Suriya is transformed into one such creature in Reliance Big Picture-produced, Hari scripted and directed Singam (Lion). As sub-inspector Duraisingam in a small Tamil Nadu village called Nallur, he does, in fact, seem to be endowed with beastly strength. The story and script have been tailored for Suriya’s daredevilry that includes fighting tens of ferocious looking goons with his bare fists. Sometimes, he ...

If it is a masala film, 100 cars should be smashed, hundreds of villains wearing white dhotis should rush, every 20 minutes the heroine and junior artist should dance in semi clad attires and at the end the hero should win over the villain. Finally the hero will sing the opening song and wave at the audience and send them home.
Director Hari has abruptly followed this formula and poured it hot on the heads of the audience.
The film opens with Durai Singam (Surya) leading a passable life in Nallore. His aspirations have always been taking up his father’s business of provision stores. But, he couldn’t keep away from his father’s (Radha Ravi) requests of becoming a cop.
