Oscar-winning actor Ariana DeBose looks to the starry night and sings her heart’s desire in the trailer for Disney’s new animated feature “Wish.”
If you’ve ever wondered how the Wishing Star came to be, this animated musical feature, set to be released on Nov. 22, is an ode to that legacy that has been featured so prominently throughout Disney Animation’s history.
DeBose stars as Asha, a 17-year-old who lives in the magical kingdom of Rosas, a fantastical place ruled by Disney’s newest villain, Chris Pine’s King Magnifico, and built on people’s wishes and hopes. Joining the cast is Alan Tudyk, who voices Asha’s pet goat Valentino. When Asha makes a wish one night, she finds herself encountering “Star,” a cosmic energetic character from the star-filled sky after unintentionally summoning him.

When it comes to the buzzier titles at any film festivals, traditional narrative cinema often hogs the spotlight. But the Toronto International Film Festival, held in Toronto, Canada in September 2023, has also provided an impressive array of non-fiction films, movies that take a look at the real-life workings of humanity. From sports documentaries and intimate explorations of war, to films about legendary musicians and meditative dives into family history, this year's crop of TIFF documentaries has a little something for everyone.
The best documentaries offer audiences a new perspective on the world around them, shedding light on important issues that might otherwise go unnoticed, or even just paying homage to the careers of beloved stars. Without the dramatic flourishes of narrative films, which embellish even stories based on real life, documentaries are able to prevent a much more authentic vision of the world -- albeit subject to the specific viewpoint of their filmmakers.

The film, “Sorry/Not Sorry,” details the stand-up’s downfall after he was accused in a 2017 New York Times article of sexual misconduct by five women. It also deals with C.K.’s attempts at a post-scandal comeback — including a Grammy win in 2021 — along with backlash faced by the accusers. The sale came hours after the film’s TIFF world premiere.
Directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones, “Sorry/Not Sorry” is a New York Times production. Financial terms have not been disclosed, but Greenwich’s Andy Bohn negotiated the acquisition with CAA Media Finance on behalf of The New York Times.
“We couldn’t be happier to be partnering with Greenwich in the release of ‘Sorry/Not Sorry,'” Suh stated. “Their support means that the film – and the...

Chvrches’ Lauren Mayberry has performed her very first solo show, featuring a nine-song setlist that included new, unreleased tunes and a cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Check out the full setlist and watch videos of the performance below.
The show took place on Monday, September 4th, at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC, and marked the first live performance from Mayberry since she announced earlier this year that she would begin releasing solo music. Joined by a three-piece band, her new songs came to life with floral stage decorations, high-energy arrangements, and plenty of space for her bright, clear voice to carry the melodies.
Some songs, like the opener “Bird,” had a driving feel, with ’80s-pop-esque instrumentation. Others, like the closing number “Sorry, Etc.” had a harder, punk-ish feel, with Mayberry shout-singing “I’m sorry, et cetera” on repeat. The Madonna cover came near the end of the set,...

Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun are still working together, despite recent reports that the two have parted ways.
Multiple sources tell Et, “Justin and Scooter are still working together. Justin is not taking meetings to look for new management. The two recently worked on something together.”
Back in 2006, the young Canadian singer was sharing clips of his talent on YouTube. It was then that Braun came across his home video of a cover of a Ne-Yo song and recognized his talent.
In 2007, Braun arranged for Bieber to fly out to Atlanta to meet with him at Jermaine Dupri’s studio. Since then, Braun and Bieber have worked closely together delivering all of his chart-topping albums.
In January, the superstar singer-songwriter sold the rights to his entire music catalog in exchange for a head-spinning payday.

A mini-set of songs from their solo projects was also included, treating fans to full-band renditions of Nick Jonas’s 2014 hit “Jealous” and 2015’s “Cake by the Ocean” by Joe Jonas’s band Dnce.
To mark the ceremonious opening night, the concert boasted special guests Kirk Franklin, producer Jon Bellion, and a gospel choir for a run-through of The Album single “Walls.

Season 2 of young adult romance “Heartstopper” has arrived on Netflix, accompanied by a soundtrack filled with pop and rock. Adapted from Alice Oseman’s graphic novels, the new season continues the cute, queer, colorful and cartoon-embellished story.
Now that they are boyfriends, Nick Nelson (Kit Connor) and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) face the nuanced challenges of Nick’s decision to come out to his family and friends. The first episode kicks off on a solid note with Maggie Rogers’ “Shatter” and Fitz and the Tantrums’ “Out of My League.” The 1975’s “The Sound” uplifts episode three after a stressful round of testing for the Year 11 students. Taylor Swift’s...

Following the Galas and Special Presentations line-up at Toronto International Film Festival, they’ve now unveiled their documentary lineup, which includes Frederick Wiseman’s restaurant doc Menus-Plaisirs Les Troisgros, Errol Morris’ John le Carré film The Pigeon Tunnel, Raoul Peck’s Silver Dollar Road, Roger Ross Williams’ Stamped From the Beginning, and more.
“There’s no question it’s been a very challenging year and I think we’re waiting for the moment, for the market to correct itself for people to realize that their viewers are going to need something more than just celebrity profiles and true crime [docs],” Powers told Deadline. “There’s quite a few sales titles this year that are coming in with strong representation from companies like CAA, UTA, Submarine, Dogwoof, Cinephil, et cetera,” Powers noted. “I think that’s a sign of the strength of what these companies hope are going to have some broad appeal of these films.

The Toronto International Film Festival announced its lineup of documentaries this morning, a slate that includes the world premiere of a film on uncancelled comedian Louis C.K., as well as fresh work from nonfiction greats Raoul Peck, Frederick Wiseman, Errol Morris, Lucy Walker, and Roger Ross Williams.
Sorry/Not Sorry, directed by Caroline Suh and Cara Mones, foregrounds women comedians who accused Louis C.K. of sexual harassment and the consequences they faced as a result. C.K. admitted in 2017 that he had exposed himself and masturbated in front of several women, which appeared to cancel his thriving standup and acting career. But after a pause he resumed standup performances before sold out crowds.
Louis C.K.
“It’s a really nuanced telling of the story produced by the New York Times,” TIFF chief documentary programmer Thom Powers told Deadline. “It’s been six years since the original New York Times reporting on this case.

This 4th of July weekend, Donald Trump largely spent his time, as he often does, on social media, sharing memes of himself or in support of him. One in particular though, in which Trump was turned into George Washington, drew mockery from Willie Geist on Wednesday morning’s episode of “Morning Joe.”
The photo, shared on July 4 by Trump, has his head superimposed onto the body of George Washington, leading troops in battle. There is no text on the image, nor did Trump add a caption to it; it was posted with absolutely no context. So, Geist took it upon himself to add some.
“The obvious distinction there, one of many, is that George Washington was a soldier, Donald Trump chose not to be one,” Geist said bluntly. And, without taking a breath, he simply moved on in the discussion.

Is Becky G's new song about Sebastian Lletget? On June 28, the 26-year-old singer dropped her highly anticipated collaboration with Gabito Ballesteros, "La Nena," and the empowering track and sexy music video center on a woman choosing to dance through life despite having a broken heart.
In the track, Ballesteros begins by singing in Spanish, "Quiere olvidarse del cabrón que no valora / Que está con ella y a la vez con otra," which translates to, "She wants to forget about the bastard who doesn't value / Who is with her and at the same with another."
Another standout lyric is when Becky shouts: "Mejor sola que mal acompañada" which means, "Better alone than in bad company."
But perhaps the most telling lyrics are in the chorus when Becky and Ballesteros both sing, "Baila sola y si supiera / Que bella es soltera /Lo siento, bebé / Le dedicó su ex, el que no...

This article contains spoilers for all seven episodes of I’m a Virgo.
There’s a lot going on in I’m a Virgo, Boots Riley’s seven-episode series on Prime Video. The mere premise of the show itself – that of a 13-foot tall young Black man from Oakland finding himself – is a lot to unpack. And that’s before the Sorry to Bother You filmmaker begins to introduce other elements of magical realism.
Cootie’s (Jharrel Jerome) journey to self discovery features: a cult cartoon called Parking Tickets that has the potential to drive people insane, a billionaire comic book writer who becomes his own fascist creation called The Hero (Walton Goggins), and of course: plenty of revolutionary labor politics.
All of those disparate threads come to a head in the I’m a Virgo finale in which Cootie and friends have sabotaged a power facility in a fruitless attempt at...

The return of one of Netflix's best series isn't too far away.
As previously reported, Heartstopper Season 2 premieres on August 3, 2023.
Unlike The Witcher and You, the second season of the coming-of-age dramedy will drop its entire season on that date.
Netflix shared the first scenes of the season premiere on Saturday at Tudum.
The sneak peek begins with Charlie (Joe Locke) waking up to a sweet good morning message from his new boyfriend, Nick (Kit Connor).
As the scene progresses, we see them send messages back and forth as they prepare for the day ahead before ultimately crossing paths at school.
If the teaser proves anything, their relationship is still flourishing.
Far too often, needless drama is thrown into TV relationships all in the name of creating -- you guessed it -- drama.

No, we didn’t ask Leo Woodall about the “scene” in “The White Lotus” season two. Maybe we should have. Maybe we should have remembered the fact Woodall’s character, Jack, was spotted by Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge), having, um, intercourse with his supposed “uncle,” Quentin (Tom Hollander). But frankly, it didn’t come up. Maybe we got a little sidetracked talking about the Coachella and Glastonbury music festivals instead.

We were idiots in 2014. In almost a decade, Prime Video – as it’s now styled – has invested in some of the best drama around. It hasn’t stuck to one genre or poured everything into a single big-hitter, but has commissioned widely and mostly, very well. There have been bold sci-fi and alt-history that doesn’t pull its punches, from The Man in the High Castle to The Underground Railroad and The Power, as well as culture-redefining LGBTQ+ shows like Transparent, zany comedies like Mozart in the Jungle, action thrillers Reacher and Jack Ryan, and cool collaborations like Swarm.

Have you ever wondered how the Wishing Star, the one that so many Disney characters wished upon, came to be? Well, the Magic Kingdom attempts to explain that eternal question in its newest animated musical, “Wish.”
“West Side Story” Oscar winner Ariana DeBose voices the main character Asha, who, along with her helpful goat named Valentino, finds out one day that their wishes can literally come true. The film is set in the fantastical kingdom of Rosas, which is ruled over by a king voiced by Chris Pine.
Disney, once the gold standard of family films thanks to Pixar and Disney Animation, has recently struggled to score at the box office with its animated offerings. “Encanto,” which was released earlier in the pandemic, was a modest hit given the circumstances, but other releases, like “Lightyear” and “Strange World,” massively flopped in theaters and lost money for the studio. Dave “Lil Dicky” Burd’s Dave is back with season 3. Naturally, many viewers are curious about the cast of the Fxx/Hulu series and where they might have seen the actors before. Find out what shows and movies Andrew Santino, Taylor Misiak, Christine Ko, Travis “Taco” Bennett, and GaTa have been in before, plus who the richest is out of the Dave cast.
Dave ‘Lil Dicky’ Burd and GaTa in season 3 of ‘Dave’ | Byron Cohen/FX Lil Dicky is the wealthiest ‘Dave’ cast member
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Lil Dicky is worth an estimated $8 million in 2023. The rapper hasn’t released new music in some time, which means he hasn’t gone on tour and earned money from that revenue stream. Instead, he has been focused on writing new music and his Fxx series.
Burd’s co-star Santino, who plays his manager in the comedy series, ranks second when it comes to net worth.

Hell Drivers Hell Drivers, 3pm, Talking Pictures TV (Freeview Channel 82), Monday, February 13
Andrew Robertson writes: Tom Yately (Stanley Baker) is an ex-con caught up trying to scrape by. As a trucker in the 1950s his attempts to keep to the straight and narrow are sometimes not the shortest path. There's romance, racism, recklessness. Hell Drivers tells its story with efficient abandon. The cargo may be ballast but it's well balanced. A cast of not-yet-famous faces bring to life a tale of machismo and machinery. Machinations too, in a scheme involving 'getting' and 'quick' but not everyone will be rich. Near everyone involved would go on to higher heights. Unlike many shared early works this holds up well. It may at times look clumsy to modern viewers but this is robust film-making. Six decades and change have not slowed its pace, nor dulled its anger. Sorry We Missed You covers similar ground.

On Sunday night, Madonna appeared at the Grammy Awards wearing an outsized black tuxedo, her eyebrows bleached platinum blonde and her cheeks plumped and smooth. Everyone lost it. Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter: “Looks like she had a face transplant”; “Madonna received the ‘New Face’ award at the 2023 Grammy Awards!”; “Not the Madonna I remember.” By Monday morning, numerous news outlets had dubbed Madonna “unrecognisable” and were busy ringing up plastic surgeons to ask their opinions on a woman they’d never actually treated.
That the reaction has been entirely critical of the 64-year-old pop icon is unsurprising – Madonna has long been a punching bag for the apparent crimes of not being young, publicly expressing her sexuality and not looking the same as she did half a century ago when she first became famous. This is no exaggeration. In 1993, a Smash Hits magazine spread printed the words “Calm down Grandma!

Demi Lovato and Jordan Lutes, also known as Jutes, took the next big step in their relationship on Feb. 4. The couple went red carpet official at the Clive Davis Pre-Grammy gala, where Lovato (who uses she/they pronouns) wore a stunning strapless black dress with a white ruffle detail. Meanwhile, Jutes rocked a simple black suit.
The couple first announced they were dating in August 2022, when Jutes celebrated the "Sorry Not Sorry" singer's birthday with a heartfelt post on his Instagram. "Happy birthday baby. ur a 30 year old minx and i'm the luckiest schmuck in the world cuz i get to call u mine," he captioned the post. "Making u laugh has become my new obsession cuz ur smile literally cures my depression (there's a song lyric in there somewhere). i'm so proud of u for not only surviving everything you've been through but coming out on top and becoming ur healthiest happiest sweetest self.

‘Let Me Love You’ hitmaker Justin Bieber has sold his 15-year music catalogue for a reported 200 million. The 28-year-old singer has followed the footsteps of artists like Bob Dylan, Mick Fleetwood, Neil Young, Sting and Blondie singer Debbie Harry, who have sold interests in their music for fortunes in the last three years, reports Female First UK.
Justin sold the rights to his recording career to London-listed company Hipgnosis Songs Capital, with sources telling Variety that the singer’s tunes will continue to be administered by Universal Music where he has been throughout his career.
As per Female First UK, Hipgnosis Song Management founder Merck Mercuriadis, 59, said in a statement about the acquisition of Justin’s entire portfolio before 2022, which consists of 290 tracks: “The impact of Justin Bieber on global culture over the last 14 years has truly been remarkable. For decades, wishes have been an important part of Disney history, as seen in songs like “When You Wish Upon a Star” to “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes.” Disney’s upcoming movie, aptly titled “Wish,” is taking that concept to the next level, the company announced at the D23 Expo on Friday.
The new, animated film takes place in Rosas, the kingdom of wishes, it was announced at the D23 Expo on Friday. The movie focuses on the power of wishes, and it blends the classic watercolor-esque Disney animation style with a newer, CGI look. Ariana DeBose will play Asha, the 17-year-old heroine and protagonist of “Wish.” Jennifer Lee wrote the film, with Chris Buck, Fawn Veerashunthorn directing.
DeBose treated the D23 audience to a live performance of “More for Us,” one of the songs from “Wish.” The movie will hit theaters in November 2023, in honor of Disney’s 100th anniversary.

Sorry House of the Dragon fans: Patrick Dempsey will not cameo as a long-lost Targaryen on HBO.
Grey’s Anatomy fans who were in attendance at the D23 Expo Friday were probably surprised to see Dempsey with very white hair. When Deadline asked him on the red carpet if he’s planning a special Hotd cameo, he revealed the real reason behind his shocking, snowy ‘do.
Dempsey is playing Piero Taruffi, the Italian race car driver who won the 1957 Mille Miglia, in Michael Mann’s upcoming Ferrari. The movie also stars Adam Driver, Shailene Woodley and Penélope Cruz.
“I’m having a great time, I get to drive a lot of fast cars,” he said.

It might not be part 2, part 3 or part 5 of her new album “Renaissance,” but Beyonce has dropped a new project: During last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Gatorade released a new commercial honoring Serena Williams narrated by the singer.
The video, directed by Jake Nava — who helmed Beyonce’s “Crazy in Love” video — was released as the tennis superstar takes to the U.S Open one last time late Monday night. Williams announced that she was “evolving away from tennis” earlier this month.
The extended version released this morning highlights Williams’ career. The “Break my Soul” singer’s narration starts, “When the world writes her down in history, we’ll begin where she started. At love.”
It continues, “It’s a love that we’ll remember through the generations, a love that started a movement, a movement to always love exactly who you are and who you can be.
