Sex & Nudity

  • One of the random dialogue lines that can be heard at the start of a custom level mentions wearing "bondage gear" as a reference to Mad Max.
  • One of Rick the Adventure Core's lines say he's a black belt in pretty much everything, including "bedroom".
  • One of Cave Johnson's prerecorded lines is "If you're hearing this, it means you're taking a long time on the catwalks between tests. The lab boys say that might be a fear reaction. I'm no psychiatrist, but coming from a bunch of eggheads who wouldn't recognize the thrill of danger if it walked up and snapped their little pink bras, that sounds like 'projection'."

Violence & Gore

  • In one of the random dialogue lines that plays at the start of a custom level, there is a sound of a head being blown up, with sound of blood splattering onto the ground, although the speaker quickly makes a comical retort. Mildly dark humour.
  • The violence has been toned down compared to the first game. Turrets can shoot players but there is no injury detail or blood present, although gory sounds can be heard. Characters make death threats towards the player.
  • This game is technically a first-person-shooter, but it is rather about using a portal gun to solve puzzles and get from one area to another. Any violence is very mild, and in some of the ways you can get hurt, no blood can be seen.
  • The player may be damaged by various sci-fi obstacles in the environment such as lasers, turrets guns, fire etc. But the game is designed in a simple, comical manner that reduces the intensity and nature of the violence.
  • The main villain, GLaDOS makes frequent references to death and violent ways of killing. Often times, she attempts to kill the player, but it is easy for the player to escape these situations.
  • Some robots can be destroyed.
  • The player can be shot and killed, but not in a graphic way.

Profanity

  • One of the random dialogue lines that plays t the start of a custom level includes the word 'ass'.
  • God's name is taken in vain 14 times
  • "Crap" is said 11 times.
  • "Hell" is used 5 times.
  • "Damn" is used 4 times.
  • Butt is used once
  • D--g is used 6 times
  • Mild language, including "crap", "damn", "hell", "bloody" and "flipping".
  • "Bloody" is sometimes used by Wheatley

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Lot's of ashtrays can be seen with used cigarettes in them in some areas in the game.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Filled with dark disturbing humor. Most of it can only be seen/heard if you are looking for it.
  • Compared to the previous game, portal 2 is less dark but more chaotic and more intense...
  • Some custom levels may feature blood stains, as they are included in the game files, although never shown in the vanilla game.
  • Do note however that most of the frightening/intense content is diluted by the adventurous nature and comical design of the game. This game has a lot of dark humor that may offend some audiences. The game has generated controversy due to a scene where Wheatly mocks the player for being adopted calling him/her "fatty fatty, no parents". This may offend families with adopted children.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • Probably the tamest fully-fledged game by Valve, violence is infrequent and mostly directed at robotic characters. The player character can die by various methods (dissolved by acid, burned by lasers, blown up, suffocated by toxic gas, being shot at by turrets) although there is no injury detail and the camera simply drops to the floor before the level restarts.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • It's implied that Cave Johnson was poisoned in one part of the game.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Revealing the dark past of aperture science, there are some areas that may seem somewhat disturbing
  • GLaDOS threatens Chell that she will force her to test and endless series of chambers for the rest of her life until she dies, then reanimate her. Basically have her test for eternity without respite as punishment for killing GLaDOS in the first game.
  • Cave Johnson dies in the game
  • The atmosphere of some areas, especially the area underneath the facility and GLaDOS's chamber, may be a bit unsettling for some players.
  • The sequence in which Wheatley and Chell must escape the facility amid crashing and falling objects may be frightening to some players.
  • The scene in which Wheatley betrays Chell may be surprising/unsettling for some players.
  • At the end of the game, Chell fires a portal at the moon, which begins to suck her and Wheatley into space. Wheatley yells for help, but the space core detaches and smacks him into the vacuum of space. Later, we see him floating in space lamenting and apologizing to no one in particular. Though this scene is comical, it may be upsetting.
  • GLaDOS allows Chell out of the facility during the game's finale, complete with a series of turrets singing a happy/sad farewell tune. Chell comes out of a small shack, followed by a Weighted Companion Cube that is sent up. The door to the shack then slams shut and the screen cuts to black. This scene may upset or disturb some, as it is both comical and a bit emotional.
