- The film deals with issues such as family hardships, war, dictatorship, and poaching of animals, among others.
- Compared to the first film, there are more frequent and more intense action scenes. This includes battles where casualties occur, although deaths are more implied than shown.

- A main character is killed by a dragon when he saves another character. This is emotionally intense and maybe disturbing for some.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
- The transformation of Toothless, under hypnosis, from Hiccup's ally into a predator who tries to kill him, may be disturbing to young children.
- Intense and dark scene involving a character's death about 3/4 of the way into the movie. There is no blood, and the camera cuts away from it, but the scene and build up in nature is very foreboding and intense.
