Not the worst film I've seen
davidmadden-4089822 May 2022
Im a big fan of low budget b-rated films. That being said, I dont hold a high standard for them either. Thats why I'll give the film 3 stars. Its a watch one time film, break from the norm, but not worth watching a second time even 20 years later when you've totally forgotten what the film is about.

The story is mediocre at best but also has zero closure. You cant have too many open ends on a film like this, it leaves the viewer feeling unsatisfied. I.e. The Denver character isnt explained at all, and because of how it ends, seems a misplaced character to the story.

There are 2 good things to this film, first, it seems maybe the director is competent. Does well setting the scenes and taking some shoddy old west town and making a decent set out of it. Second, actually pretty good acting from the cast which is why Im okay with not fully skipping over this film. They all do a good job at playing their characters.

Horribly bad, but the acting wasn't terrible
manuelasaez19 May 2022
This will probably go down as the worst movie I'll see in 2022; the story was interesting at first but then devolved into nonsense, the movie plodded along at a snails pace and didn't get interesting until the midway point, and the production values just weren't much better than your average made-for-TV train-wreck that has no business receiving a budget.

That being said, the acting was...good? Most if not all of the characters played their roles well, and even with a crap script, they made the best of it. The teenagers were surprisingly adept at delivering their lines like real teenagers do. Now if that's a compliment or an insult, I'll let you decide.

This movie was garbage and will be forgotten and ignored like it deserves to be.

Beware the reviews on this movie; I see a lot of accounts that reviewed this and only this movie, which lets me know that these people know someone that was involved in this movie or worked on it themselves. Disingenuous reviewing is the bane of this site, but it continues to happen; don't fall for their lies.

To those reviewers; you aren't doing anyone a favor by lying about the quality of this movie. It's trash, I know it's trash, you know it's trash. At least be honest about it when you review it.

What a great waste...
QuinTekno20 May 2022
Good concept and storyline but overall the acting was pretty bad, that in combination with the story being so long and pretty much nothing really happening during the whole movie besides from maybe the last 10 minutes.

Sadly a waste of a good concept, and my time.

Doomed from the start
Jblum512 May 2022
Teardrop is a horror mystery about a pair of teachers who bring 3 seemingly random students to investigate a ghost town. They meet an absolutely irritating local who gives them cryptic information about a seemingly random event that happened long ago.

This movie is absolutely terrible. The characters are boring teenager stereotypes , the ditzy "hot" girl obsessed with looks and having a good time , the nerdy Asian obsessed with her GPA who doesn't know how to let loose, and pervy wanna be cool kid who strikes out with the ladies. The dialogue is absolutely atrocious which nearly makes American pie look deep.

The plot is so irritating it's hard to care about, and the production value is right off of lifetime. Really the issue is just the awful flat characters , annoying setting and ludicrous ending.

I did enjoy the sound design. Yay.

This one is a hard skip.

Like a bad video rental in our streaming era
BandSAboutMovies14 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
That Tubi exclusive banner on movies is like a must be 18 years to rent sticker for my ancient brain because I keep watching these movies. Teardrop has two teachers -- Chris (Jeff Branson, who was in the 2010 remake of I Spit On Your Grave) and Rebecca (Murray Gray) -- who have brought three of their students -- Josie (Rachael Thundat), Teala (Megan Lee) and Ross (Michael MacLane) -- to the ghost town of Teardrop.

From the first meeting with hotel owner Denver (Bradley Fisher), you can tell that things aren't going to end well. The whole town is infused with evil due to some hangings in its past and Chris just keeps coming back, again and again, probably dying over and over while dooming everyone who comes with him.

Sadly, none of the characters demonstrate a single unique angle: Josie uses her looks to get whatever she wants, Teala is an Asian hard working professional student and Ross is a white rapper who alternatively tries to connect and push away women. Chris is a writer whose failures have pushed him to teaching and then this town that he's always felt drawn to, kind of like the Branson version of Jack Torrance while Rebecca starts to fall for him for no reason whatsoever. Also: edibles instead of smoking weed because it's 2022.

Ah, it all makes sense to me now. Director Steven R. Monroe made those I Spit On Your Grave remakes as well as the film Complacent and, as most horror directors do these days, plenty of holiday streaming offerings. It was written by Spyder Dobrofsky who also alternates between horror and holidays.

Of all things, I liked the local girl -- well, she can shapeshift, so I don't want to be misgendering someone with that ability -- who basically keeps telling the rapping kid that she's dead and that he's going to die too and even after she makes him puke all over the place -- and lose his chain -- he still considers going back to hook up. I grew up in a small town too, even if we weren't all ghosts that had been lynched a century and change ago and I often wanted to tell anyone new to get out and go anywhere else.

Nobody ever listened.

Below average
sweetstuff122014 June 2022
This movie is below average but I didn't feel it was a complete waste of time. I was mildly entertained/interested by the main character flashbacks and the saloon bartender.

The acting was as you would suspect with a low budget film. Average, at best. The characters were very stereotypical but I think that was intended.

The writing was predictable. There were many, and I do mean many, opportunities for jump scares or other horrific elements, but they were, mysteriously, overlooked and skipped. However, the overall story was interesting and the setting was somewhat unique.

The ending was predictable. I kept expecting a twist of some sort because the main character is a (this is not a spoiler, you find out in the first 10 minutes)"best-selling novelist." However, the end went exactly where you were expecting it to go.

If you've got an hour and a half to spare, you can give it a try but lower your expectations to settle for below average.

Good Story Line
wolfd-119 May 2022
Good story line, acting is mediocre except Denver. Some of the set is to laugh at. The desk for instance in this 100 years old building has metal slides.

Dropping tears
kosmasp21 May 2022
Actually its more a noose around ... let's not get too much into this though. We don't want to give away too much that is. The movie is quite simple in some ways and quite complicated in others. For a low budget horror movies, the effects are ok.

The story is predictable but still has some twists and turns that you may be able to appreciate. Acting is fine and while there are a few cliches that you have to endure, it is nothing that is too bad ... the ending is interesting and may elevate this for some ... again decent effort for a low budget movie.

Solid concept and skillful writing but seemed to be missing something.
qucmarco12 June 2022
Overall, I liked the movie but felt there could have been more time spent on the development of the characters, the location, and the casting. The director's work was unremarkable, and although the FX were good, there just were not enough of them or scary scenes. I also found myself wondering who the target audience was for the film. I'm guessing late teens/early twenties??

The reality is filming post-covid is a challenge on many levels for filmmakers and I understand why some of the choices were made. But I'm a big movie buff, especially the horror genre, and love getting lost in the characters, location, director's choices/vision, and the writing. Except for the latter, not much else stood out for me.

That said, I'd recommend this movie as a good "starter" flick for movie night.

An "American Horror Story" type psychological horror-thriller worth watching
BCPro12 May 2022
The film Teardrop (2022) is a psychological horror-thriller set in an abandoned western ghost town that is full of sinister secrets about its past. It is similar to the show "American Horror Story" so if you enjoyed that show this movie will probably bring back some nostalgia.

We are introduced to a pair of high school teachers (Chris & Rebecca) and three students who are visiting the ghost town for a few days to explore. As they get ready to check into their rooms, they are greeted by a very eccentric front desk local (Denver) who tells them eerie stories throughout the movie about "Teardrop's" past and the disturbing events that occurred through flashbacks.

The teenagers are pretty stereotypical which brings comical relief in between the scarier scenes. Josie, for example, is the typical self-absorbed attention-seeking "popular girl". Teala is a low self-esteemed nerdy teen who is plagued with anxiety and is picked on. Ross is the usual egocentric teenage boy who is constantly getting on everyone's nerves with his devious behavior, especially around the girls.

As the plot unfolds, some of the characters struggle to face their own temptations and "ghosts" of their pasts. We also start to quickly piece together what really occurred in the town as Chris slowly becomes consumed by the evil of the town and its ghosts.

Overall, I really enjoyed the dialogue, acting, and character development along with the film's score. It's a fun horror film and was well executed for Tubi.

FILCH AND FLASH
wop-3152914 May 2022
After witnessing the Tubi Original titled Titanic 666 (lol gets me everytime) I was certain this would be another unbearable experience. It wasn't. They actually threw money at some competent folks on this one.

The only gripe I have for this film is the never ending plucking of that Zeus forsaken guitar. I was hoping there'd be an after credits scene revealing the bloodbath that must have poured from that musician's fingers in order to accomplish that feat. Even during serious conversations, he was just tirelessly twanging away.

The 1st Act is so slowwww and when accompanied with that guitar, you may throw in the towel. However, the 2nd Act is pretty intriguing and the 3rd brings a satisfying conclusion.

The setting is unique for this genre. The acting was shockingly good. You assume the characters will be very one-note, but they end up having some depth. The plot reveals information at a solid pace to keep you engaged. While the twist feels a bit forced and confusing, it was still well written enough to enjoy. Overall, this felt like a really long episode of The Outer Limits (that's a compliment).

One last thing that apparently even writers never know, and I hope one person reads this and it sticks with them so they can pass it on somewhere in their life... when referring to a hanging, the past tense is HANGED not HUNG. So if someone was executed for a crime, you would say that they HANGED him.

(I rate movies based on expectations. You can't put Sharknado on the same scale as Jaws.)

Why did I expect something better?
pattiffany55 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think I officially gave up on this movie when there was only 40 minutes left. The character's motivations for doing things and saying certain things went completely out of the window. The acting wasn't good but it was better than this film deserved. The movie unfortunately builds up the story of the town so slowly that the first kill happens in the last 20 minutes. The more you think about this movie the less it makes sense. Did someone or something send out random letters but not any information on how to get to the town? Were their other's like Chris that thought he was unique? If they knew these people were innocent then why kill them? Even though the movie has a bunch of cursing the deaths aren't explicit. I truly had faith in this movie to do something special because the concept is unique, the acting isn't bad and the way it's shot is fine. The dialogue is a bit forced and lastly they show us the same flashbacks that we've already seen TWICE in the last 10 minutes. Of course they split up in the last 20 minutes for no real reason.

A Great Concept... Poorly Executed.
pmcbii15 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
An abandoned ghost town is haunted by its limited and long gone population. Seen it before? Me too, but that's okay.

The same types of stories are told over and over, in every genre, and that's fine; retellings still often manage to bring something new to the table.

Teardrop did not... but it absolutely could have.

I went into it hoping for, though not expecting, a fresh perspective on the subject; I got what I expected, yet was still disappointed. What could've been a great film was held back by a screenplay that felt far from ready to be shot.

Teardrop, as a concept, had the potential to truly set itself apart, and drastically raise the bar. Sadly, the writing didn't allow the concept to shine.

Major plot points/twists were casually, and constantly, volunteered by the characters (through terrible dialouge), leaving no room for the audience to feel any suspense, or attempt to solve the mystery of Teardrop on our own.

The only thing I could view as an actual twist, delivered effectively, was Chris smothering Josie.

The writing answered every question in the first act, then failed to answer any of the new questions it introduced in the third; we're told everything in the beginning, yet know nothing in the end. When done intentionally, it's masterful. However, this time felt very unintentional.

Overall, Teardrop is conceptual gold mine that wasn't properly dug into.

No, it's just bad
sgenericr22 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Nothing happens until the last 10 minutes. I'm fine with a slow burn if it actually leads somewhere, but nothing happens. There are no twists and no turns. It goes in the most generic straight line it can. I thought maybe there would be something unexpected with the maid, but there isn't. She plays out exactly where you suspect she will too. Of course, I've actually seen other horror/mystery movies before, so if you haven't this may surprise you, but I still doubt you'll be happy you stuck around. I thought the acting was fine.

You could literally watch the last 10 minutes and understand 90% of the story if you are familiar with horror cliches.

It's a free movie and I still want a refund
spaldingg-7190224 March 2023
The acting from the teenagers is some of the worst I've ever seen. Story goes nowhere and I was literally falling asleep watching this. How do so many bad movies get made anyway? The bartender was the best character. The ending didn't make much sense since there was a clear established rule that no one is allowed to leave yet somehow one of the characters was offed when they left the town. Good job writers. The sound is I was really neat and even the flashbacks were the most interesting part although it was pretty obvious who the bad guy was and the relationship with one of the characters. As I said Tubi should be giving refunds for wasted time.

Decent acting
amymay-6991628 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Which,if you were to look at my other reviews,is a MAJOR compliment!!! Where this movie went off the rails was the plot, and thus the plot HOLES. How is this town named after a kid? What was it called before she was born? How can someone have such a unique genetic mutation, yet no one else in the family has it to be referenced to in her case (i.e no one in the family said " great grandma Jane never cried either,so we get why Lorelei doesn't cry") what was the reason for killing.....ANY of them!?! The curse shouldn't have applied to Chris as his grandfather escaped,so why would the great grandmother want to kill her descendant? Why kill the THREE kids on a senior trip!?!what kind of tiny school did they go to!?!?! Skanky girl and lady teacher were really irritating. Just.... WHY!?! Slow as molasses and twice as murky. The ending made no sense, overall a complete waste of time.

Slow Burn Supernatural Thriller starring Jeff Branson from I Spit On Your Grave
leslie-896-814 May 2022
This is the first Tubi Original I've seen. As the run time was only an hour and a half. And the western premise intrigued me.

The lead actor who played a novelist turned teacher (or teacher turned novelist), Chris Cotton "aka Mr. C" who's secret past would become unraveled in this abandoned mining town of Teardrop.

The reason I'm giving it a 7 stars is the Hell Dogs. I wanted to see more of them, rather than their eyes. Too hard to see. Thought there could have been a more wild scene with them...

Don't want to spoil it. But a solid thriller from Tubi. I'll be watching their next ones. Titanic 666.

Cabin Horror in the West
rocker-8584211 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This film has a great ensemble cast, the dialogue and personalities were relatable & authentic! The eerie setting was perfect and predictable, yet still engaging enough to draw you into the story.

Connecting the dots as it moves along from beginning to end, I thoroughly enjoyed the comedic reliefs that character, Ross the Boss brought as well as the in keeper of the town when questioned by Chris, the struggling author/teacher.

Lots of twists, turns & minor jump scares, Teardrop reminds me of the town in AZ, Tombstone, with its real life ghost hauntings and sightings, plus other attractions, that draw tourists from all over.

Lots of potential for a horror epic and screenwriter, Spyder Dobrofsky, has certainly been the first to pioneer this!

As for the actors & actresses, they each brought to life a realistic portrayal of real life individuals! The mannerisms and concern of the only voice of reason, along with the uncertainty of tomorrow's future plus the superficial stereotype of "landing the hot teacher" or being blinded by lust to the point of our demise, has not been forgotten and is a treat to see & yell at the screen for!

While the visual effects were good, I wish there was a bit more oomph to the jump scares, but all in all I give everyone 4 stars! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A somewhat troublesome but still enjoyable enough for what it is
kannibalcorpsegrinder31 December 2022
Heading out into the desert, a group of students on a field trip to a remote Old-West town stay there to gain research and insight into their professor's latest novel, but the more they stay there they come to believe the town is haunted by the ghosts of its past and try to leave the town alive.

This was a pretty decent and enjoyable genre effort. One of the better features here comes from the generally intriguing setup that has a lot going for it. The main setup of the town's history as established through the opening encounter with the ghosts encountering the ghosts which gets further explained later on with the connection to the legacy of the area offers up an original and creative means to instigate the scares with the backstory we get here. As well, the secondary storyline about the students arriving and conducting research in the town for the teachers' upcoming book serves this well enough to get them out there and isolated in the town as a logical reason for the trip. The other great part here is the effective atmosphere here with the supernatural antics throughout here being quite enjoyable. The initial start to their visit with the strange rules and regulations that are in place which serve to downplay modern technology in the community is a decent enough starting point which is fleshed out rather nicely with several small but effective scenarios including the photo mishap and the encounter in the private barn that gives the hint that something's happening. When it becomes apparent that there's an agenda behind their appearance and the whole thing gradually becomes far more intense, the final half picks up considerably with some strong scenes involving the evil influence taking over him and the others which allows for them to start committing violent acts without being aware of it all. That is when the film works best and is what helps to give this the most to like about it. There are a few issues here that hold this one down. One of the biggest factors against this one is the overall lack of any established threat by the ghosts which makes a large part of the film come off as rather underwhelming. With a mystery angle involving the teacher's relationship with the town and a series of strange encounters that end at strange without crossing over into malicious, this very easily can become dull waiting for something to happen in the final half as it does such a great job building up this angle that it fails to capitalize on the scares to be had from executing it. That sets up the other major issue in that hardly any of these scenes, even at the best of times, are all that involved or scary which is a big deal when they're not involved all that often so it feels quite dull when not involving the ghosts and underwhelming when it does. These are the main issues to be had with this one which holds it down the most.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language, Violence, Brief Nudity, and mild drug use.

Warning: Spoilers
I took this film for what it was- a fun ghostly tale that took us back in time a spell, with characters that had human faults and redeeming qualities alike.. My only criticism is wanting to know even more of what may have ailed this community & how it snared further victims over the years, but in the end- I was left satisfied! Many cheers to the crew & cast who poured love and effort to bring this movie to us!!

Slow Burn Horror (Really more Mystery / Supernatural Thriller)
TheGameofChess13 May 2022
Branded as a horror movie by Tubi, I went into it expecting a lot of teenage tropes and slasher beats. But it was really more of a slow burn, unraveling of this main character Chris and how his past was tied into this old west town of Teardrop. More atmosphere than pop scares (Though a few of them)

Really liked the actor who played Ross. Feel like I've seen him before..

Definitely recommend watching this movie for a fun, sorta strange, genre defying horror movie.

"1408" meets "The Shining"
owenrskate13 May 2022
Reminded me of that John Cusack movie 1408 where he's staying in that haunted hotel to write a book on ghost towns. And the town of Teardrop had that eerie Shining presence, hotel clerk Denver /Lloyd, etc. Clearly the movie director took inspiration.

Rather enjoyed htis original movie Tubi's offering for free. (May not be free anymore by the time I'm writing this, not sure). It's about an hour and a half long, didn't need anymore time... and while some scenes go a little slow in the saloon, the ending really had a nice payoff.

Have some interpretations about the ending and Chris, but I won't spoil.

Def worth the watch on a firday night.

Atmospheric supernatural teacher nightmare
lpreble-214 May 2022
As a former teacher, I watched Teardrop with perhaps a jaded eye. Would any high school teacher take three kids on a field trip to a location that doesn't even show up on a GPS? They'd never get past the permission slips. But that sort of thing aside, the western mystery/horror film had good production values, a surprisingly talented cast, and some genuinely creepy scenes. The actor who plays Chris, the lead teacher, reminds me of Karl Urban in all the best ways. There were some sly nods to horror movie tropes, which I always love -- and burlap-headed scarecrows always creep me out. The bartender/hotel proprietor Denver was laconic and had a depth that was unexpected...like he'd played this scene before, and maybe he had..even with the main character. It's definitely worth watching, and even if you know where some of the scares might come from, it's fun to watch everybody get there.

I'm a huge fan of Spyder Dobrofsky. His writing is always outside of the box, be it comedy, thriller or horror. Teardrop is a perfect example of his amazing range. The last twenty minutes of this film creeped me out so much, I don't know how I'm going to sleep tonight....
