Arakawa Under the Bridge (Season One)
Tweekums1 May 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Protagonist Ko Ichinomiyo has been raised to believe that he should never be in debt to anybody so when he falls into the Arakawa River and is saved by the enigmatic Nino he has a problem. He feels he owes her something but she wants none of the material rewards he offers. When pressured to say what she wants she eventually says she wants him to live with her as her lover! Unwilling to be in her debt he agrees and finds himself living with Nino and a group of misfits under the bridge. They are a strange bunch; Nino claims to be from Venus and she is the most normal of the bunch! The others include a 'rock star' who always wears a star shaped mask, a cross-dressing nun, a man in a kappa costume and two children who wear metal masks and claim to have escaped from a lab. Over the course of the first series Ko grows to understand his new community and must ultimately help defend it when his father tries to develop the land.

The set up for the series might make it sound silly; the characters certainly are a strange bunch, but as we get to know them we see that they are fully rounded characters who just happen to be a bit strange. They must deal with their various issues and with each other. Most importantly of all though they provide many laughs. The character designs are a bit less detailed than most anime series but that suits them; it also makes them fairly distinctive. The series also nicely depicts the fact that just mainstream society sees a group as a bunch of misfits and weirdos doesn't mean they don't have their own little society with similar problems as anybody else… they have their jealousies and must work within that society. One might expect a series where a man is forced to become a woman's 'lover' to contain plenty of fan service but I don't recall any such scenes which was a refreshing change; in fact there is little to offend here. Overall I thought this was a fun series and look forward to watching the second season which is titled 'Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge'.

These comments are based on watching the series in Japanese with English subtitles… it is worth noting that rather unusually there isn't an English dub available, at least not on the UK DVDs.

Poetic Direction but my experience is mixed
puneetsharma913 September 2018
It's not a bad anime first episode of this element is awesome and totally hilarious are you can't expect to see words coming.

but other episode are also not that good also not all are bad. Animes little bit on poetic side. But have no story. You can find it first episode but after that there is a little bit story development.

Anime intro is awesome maybe it's not because of music but because of art work that put up on intro.

This anime is not for everyone its if you like something like poetic things that have a little story but they have a sense it's not a common sense sense that you can feel then it's very good anime but I just feel it sometime but most of time I just lose it so not perfect for me. But if you have nothing to watch and Jesus want to get a new taste in your mouth you can try this this is a different kind of dish.

Honestly this anime is so underrated and the reviews i see here are so less and dont justify its greatness. Someone even commented that its like a poem so they dont like it but he/couldn't be further from being wrong. I actually stopped watching gintama even though its funny but this Honestly makes me laugh more.

Rubbish anime

Warning: Spoilers
I just found this anime didn't make any sense whatsoever when it comes to the story as well as the characters. Yeah a rich guy meets a casual looking girl who saves him from drowning, describes herself as "Venus" and wants to be his girlfriend. Then he meets people in costumes which I'm assuming are her people but seem to be coming from somewhere else and not admitting him to why they are there in the first place? Honestly that's not really a story or even an anime to keep me interested in watching more of it!

Even the jokes on this were so bland and not funny. I mean, why bother do this anime if it's not going to be willing to make you want to become interested more. I'm actually glad I only watched two episodes becayse honestly, it just was cringy and just brutal to watch.

I really wish I could rate this anime 0, absoulety the most worst time wasted anime I've ever bumped into!
