The chapter begins as Paul is already into the session with Adele. He is sore because Adele was instrumental for having Sunil deported, which in a way, no one could have predicted. Adele makes a valid point in bringing to her patient's mind the gravity of the situation if Paul, knowing the bad blood between Sunil and Julia should have stayed out of the way, something that might have led to serious consequences.
Adele is not quite clear as to why would Sunil must be deported. An exhausted Paul shows signs of going through a rough time. He talks about leaving the profession. In fact, he informs Adele about a prospective patient he has been avoiding because he has begun to examine himself as a man that has lost his call in life.
Paul goes to say he had broken with Wendy. It was a painful parting, especially for the younger woman he was seeing. It becomes clear Paul did not have any serious commitment to her, so he is getting out of the relation before it could develop into something involved. Adele wants to know more about it, but Paul is not forthcoming.
At 57, Paul confesses he feels to jaded from a demanding profession. He had hoped to get to know Adele better but he feels he must leave his obsession. Paul has no idea about her personal life, but Adele does not offer anything to reveal anything. Paul decides this is his last time with her. He walks out of the office and is surrounded by people in the street oblivious to what is going on in his mind.
It is sad to know the season has ended and the announcement of the cancellation of the series came recently. "In Treatment" was one of the best things in recent memory on television. In fact, it elevated the quality of what is normally seen as entertainment. The adaptation of the original Israeli program got a nice treatment by the American creators.
The final episode was written by Anya Epstein and Dan Futterman who are credited as producers of the show. Paris Barclay directed with his usual keen eye for detail. Garbriel Byrne and Amy Ryan made valuable contributions to the show.
