I want to like Shauna....she makes it hard though
marieamber-9950610 February 2022
Shauna has a lot of bitterness and resents she needs to work through! She needs some therapy and a reality check. She seems to want to push everyone away. I get it and as you get older you will realize that's not a good way to live your life!

Hooked

Warning: Spoilers
Shauna's experiences are fascinating. I have a friend with dwarfism so I'm familiar with the struggles of that condition in general, but Shauna's particular situation is just so rare.

The show starts out slow, just letting you get to know Shauna and her family members (SPOILERS in this paragraph): the sister she's jealous of, the supportive tomboy sister, the overprotective mom, the fun stepdad. And we get to see Shauna's day to day struggles: being carded everywhere, being stopped by police because she's not in a car seat, being dependent on family members), what she does to counteract those handicaps (vaping, tattoos, makeup, dressing more adult). Some of those actions have consequences for her family (her mother is given nasty looks if Shauna's got too much makeup on in public).

**END SPOLIERS**

At the end of the third episode now, we're starting to get into the unique struggles in Shauna's dating life. This is so fascinating, to imagine yourself in her position, and in her potential boyfriends' position... it's very complicated, obviously. I hope they begin to explore this more in depth and with as much honesty and authenticity as Shauna is capable of giving the world.

I imagine these first few episodes are going to be a little more awkward as Shauna and her family get used to the cameras. By the end of episode 3 I can see Shauna beginning to relax so I'm optimistic about the rest of the season.

Shauna comes across as gorgeous, interesting, and fun. I'm rooting for her career on the screen because I think in addition to her fascinating story, she's genuinely fun to watch. Hopefully she remains open, honest, and authentic, rather than going the hokey route with bachelorette-type spin-offs and the like. But I'm betting on Shauna - she's too good for that, and I think she knows it. She's kind of a bad**s. That's what I think makes this show really special and why I will definitely keep watching.

(Tip for anyone new looking to see if this show is for them: wait and binge it. It's really binge-worthy and I'm so bummed I have to wait every week for the next episode!)

Great show, funny girl!
arcanemirage-9017319 January 2022
Shauna Rae is funny, and very engaging. A very refreshing change from all the other shows from this otherwise mundane channel. The family seems to be very caring and supportive. I do think TLC is famous for setting up situations for dramatic effect. This isn't that bad though.

Thought this would an interesting show to watch. All this girl does is "whine" about her disability. She needs to get over it! There are people out there that has a lot "worse" conditions then hers. GROW UP!!

Another strange person show
jacqline-4383012 January 2022
So, here we have another charming woman who happens to have a very strange condition: she is 22 but looks and sounds like an 8 year old. Shauna Rae's condition was caused by chemotherapy drugs when she was an infant. I have to say, that particular tragedy was a new one on me. Thanks mainly to watching TLC, I have been gob-smacked by some truly astounding people, including the 1,000 pound woman, the giant tumor man, the transgender teenager, the hoarders, the , the dwarf families, and the lady who can't stop eating mattress stuffing. The list goes on. These people have dramatically different conditions, but there are a couple of similar veins that run through their stories. One is they aren't the way they are by choice. They either have congenital differences or they developed them later, to everyone's horror. What they all did choose, however, was to publicize their situations on television. We can safely assume these were for financial reasons. After all, if you have an inescapable and rare condition, you might need money, and you might as well benefit financially from the public's fascination in the bizarre. So how does that make Shauna Rae, et al. Different from the freak show performers of the past? In my opinion, there is little difference. The motivations are the same...money. There is the p.c. Premise of creating awareness and acceptance people with rare diseases, birth deformities and underfunded medical conditions. The other commonality among these strange people is they are almost always portrayed as very kind, warm-hearted and brave folks who endure their lots in life with courage and often humor. That's fine. No one wants to watch a show about perpetually grumpy and sad "victims."

better than the usual TLC characters
beachlovingcas17 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I loved the first season for the most part. She was adorable and the family is sweet. Mark and the sisters are great. It is clear Shauna is the priority in the family, which is sad. The mother coddles a bit much, but probably how most moms would be in that situation. Moms do not have a guidebook for these unique situations. The first season Shauna had a few too many tantrums and the family babies her. She is an adult. And she makes sure everyone knows it. She is very pretentious. She goes out of her way to prove she is an adult, but denies it. (Many tattoos and now piercings.) She has made attempts for jobs. She is so far off when it comes to reality, making it clear that the family coddling was a bit much. She expects the world to adjust to her. This season, she is coming across very pretentious. The family needs counseling and I do not mean that in a bad way. Tara is such a smart girl working on a PHD and the youngest seems clueless on life. The family needs to let Shauna be an adult and back off. Shauna keeps telling herself and everyone else that she is an adult, but refuses to admit she really cannot live in an adult world. The episode where they looked at these incredibly pricey apartments and seriously expected it to be doable. Maybe Tara at some point will be able to afford one as a doctor lol, but Shauna cannot even decide on a minimum wage job yet. LOL I hope she realizes how snotty she is coming across, because the show can be fun. One more thing, just because you are 22, does not mean you can drink with the big girls!!! You are 50 pounds!! NOT a good thing.. She wants so badly to be a big girl, which is understandable, but she needs to be realistic!

Annoying
RDK121716 February 2022
She constantly acts annoyed that people think she is a child, and that bars and restaurants ID her when she orders an alcoholic beverage. The whole reason she has this show is because she looks like a child, you'd think she'd get it by now. Also they interview every person or employee that encounters her, where they say the same thing each time: "I was definitely surprised she was 22, my first thought was that she was a child." She doesnt do anything relatively interesting either, just day to day life like the rest of us. This would be much better as a 1hr special about her and her rare disorder, not an entire series. This shouldn't make it past the first season, but Darcey and Stacy are still on TV, so who even knows anymore.

Disappointing
tlharrison-5954624 January 2022
I paid for this show because it looked interesting but wasn't included on Discovery+.

It hasn't really been worth it. The first episode was alright and Shauna Rae seems interesting and fun. She faces a lot of challenges, and does so with a good attitude. That is awesome. Unfortunately I thought this show would be more interesting, diving into what her life is like but the producers don't seem to use much material. Mostly we see one scene after another of Shauna walking into a bar/tattoo shop/brewery/fair/restaurant and being asked how old she is by employees of these establishments, or the film crew/family members ask the employees how old they think she is -- all while playing annoying reality tv background music. I understand that must be a common occurrence in her life that gets very old but how many times can they show essentially the same scene?

In addition to this, a lot of the show feels scripted or forced. Shauna's lunch with her friends was hard to watch because her friends both showed no personality and the conversation was so scripted. I hope it gets better.

Interesting Topic Awful Subject
holiholihoy22 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a parent of a child who is physically different, watch this show and LEARN WHAT NOT TO DO.

As a person living with port wine stain on my face and with alopecia areata, I must say that Shauna Rae is a disappointing excuse for representation of people who have differences. She's a spoiled brat.

The moment something DOES NOT GO HER WAY she lashes out AT EVERYONE who is trying to help her. She insults people to their faces and mistakes it for empowerment.

She doesn't want attention and she wants people to stop asking her for her ID but that's the reality of her life: People will ask her. And instead of educating them, she uses it as an excuse to throw a tantrum. AND HER FAMILY - except her sister Tara - KEEPS ON MAKING EXCUSES FOR HER.

I have a friend with the exact same issues. But she got an education, a job, and now she is a mother and an educator. So it is possible once you can accept that you may have to educate people.

5 stars for the family putting up with her horrible attitude
mellyfontana17 September 2022
This show has a lot of potential, the reality of being a little person with the obstacles and discrimination they can face is a really worthy topic. The family are lovely, they bend over backwards to help and support Shauna and Im not here to judge them for babying her at times because I may do to the same if I were in their shoes. The problem with doing that is it allows her rude, ungrateful and entitled attitude to be the star of the show and run the house. She does have some good qualities but her bad attitude will stop me going back for a season 2. She brings nothing to the table or the show her family make the show watchable.

She really isn't comfortable being herself.
noorataijala18 February 2022
I had many expectations for this show, but it ended being a meh for me. My biggest issue was with Shauna. She complains a lot about situations where her size is noticed. Like at the bar, gym, shopping and at Halloween. She feels anxious in everyday situations and lashes out. To me this is all because she wishes she was normal height because then she could blend in. This show left me sad because I think Shauna needs professional help accepting her self as she is rather than pushing the idea of being independent. She complains a lot how she is not seen as an adult, but also feels helpless, scared and insecure all the time. But yeah. Not a win for me. I would have liked to see Shauna accept herself as she is and for the program to show the growing process, but this was just Shauna's insecurities on parade.

She complains All Day
vasquezrose18 February 2022
Started watching this and at first enjoyed hearing about her life. Then came the temper tantrums and "poor me" attitude and complaining during every episode. The complaints surround the fact she feels people are looking at her and judging her. If she wants people to understand her then she should educate us. But, geez she cries and whines all day. My kids under 5 never cried as much. She wants to be the center of attention and if all eyes are not on her she has a melt down. Too bad! It would have been great watching a strong empowered woman. Perhaps going to counseling would help her. Her mother's lack of confidence in her is debilitating. I won't waste time watching this attention seeking whiner!!

Shes so whiny and complainy over everything
brittanyy-263224 March 2022
She is always jealous of her sisters and should be happy she's alive. My dad got brain cancer and it killed him in 2 months at only 45 years old. She vapes and drinks but complains about everyone looking at her like what do they expect? She's 22 mentally and 8 physically. Goes on blind date and gets weird because dude wanted to give her a hug, then talks bad about him throwing axes, she says everything literally everything makes her uncomfortable. She complained that she couldn't reach the straw in margarita at the bar instead of even trying like get on the bar stool, instead of standing there miserable. I am basically her age and on disability also but you don't see me whining about every little thing. She cried because the dude at Halloween store was trying to find her a costume and complained that the outfits were to kiddy, to uncomfortable or didn't fit but it's apparently her favorite holiday, it doesn't look like it all she did was complain. If you want to listen to someone complaining nonstop this is the show for you.

ANNOYING!!!!!!!!!!!!
bpanzeri17 February 2022
I understand she is facing issues and challenges, she survived this horrible sickness but seems that she doesn't get it, unfortunately things are how they are but i got tired of seeing her crying for everything.... Lets be real, she acts like a child, laughs like a child and i have the impression she loves when someone thinks she is 8 and she has to correct it with a NOOOO I AM 22.

Her family treat her like a child as well, she wants to be independent and doesn't work, she cried for a piece of cardboard hitting her head by her dad's mistake but yet she is worried about her fertility because she wants to have kids?? I hate her attitude she needs a reality check.

She has to be thankful that she is privileged - there are plenty of people with disabilities around the world that decide to be someone instead of crying because a halloween costume is not sexy.

Too much whining!
puterbutt20 March 2022
I like the show for a couple episodes but became tired of Shauna Rae complaining all the time. She's constantly saying how angry she is that people ask for proof of age or just don't automatically know she's an adult. It's ridiculous how much self pity we had to listen to so I stopped watching.

the constant whining and complaining
XYandZzzzzz9 November 2022
Miss negativity is all you get with this woman. She uses her disability relentlessly. Her family is wonderful and very enjoyable. Shauna is a very attractive person. Very intelligent and funny but my gawd I can no longer listen to the victimization of hers. It almost negates all of her good qualities. I hope for her sake she gets out of her own way and realize she's not the center of the universe and that her mother stops enabling her. All that does is allows Shauna to manipulate others and keeps her feeling sorry for herself. She has a need to be constantly the center of attention. I'm out!!!

Nerve wracking
kjordan-5283828 December 2022
My biggest issue is that she acts like she is the only person who suffers from this type of discrimination. It's almost as if she is the only person who gets some form of mistreatment because of her stature even though she is 22. Has she not seen 7 little Johnson's or little people big world, or even the little couple.... Come on now. They all drive have successful careers and families. So what is her deal? She has a lot of issues she needs to deal with before dating somebody and starting a relationship. The one firefighter was a perfect example of a guy who she could have had a real connection with if she knew how to be a nicer person and not so snotty. Her older sister is the only one who has ever been real with her and not coddled her. To be honest... they should send her to live with Johnson's for a bit and whip her into shape!

She looks like a child, and acts like one too
nwcoug28 November 2022
I didn't make it through one episode as it truly was like watching a very spoiled and whiny 8-year-old throwing a temper tantrum. Ya know, the kind of kid that was never told "no" and never given any kind of discipline.

This is a grown woman. Nothing is wrong with her mind, yet she has never held a job, or worked in any way to achieve living on their own. It appears that the only friends she has are her family, and her entitled attitude clearly demonstrates why this is so.

If you enjoy listening to a whiny child, then this is the show for you! If you love listening to someone that constantly mentions their victim status, you will LOVE this show.

Entitled brat!
rosannalukas4 January 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoy watching her family. They seem like caring, funny people. But Shauna herself, ugh. I have no idea how people can stand to be around her. She complains non stop about everything. Moving into their new apartment in NY, she was so ungrateful. I felt awful for her parents, who helped them get into that apartment. They probably go and cry somewhere, after the treatment they receive from her. She treats the guys she dates on the show, very rudely as well. Just because she survived brain cancer, doesn't mean she's allowed to treat everyone like dirt on the bottom of her shoe. Someone needs to put her in her place. If there's another season, I will have to pass.

Another show with people who are trying so hard to be relative and its obvious... her and her family are all annoying. I get they wanna be relevant & used her past as the basis for this.... But this entire show is trash. All i hear is me, me, me. Please stop showing this trash.

I wanted to like this show, I really liked her family, but as the episodes progressed I was bored with her negative attitude. This show is way too one demential, we are being asked to feel sympathy for her all the time, too much for me.

Shauna Rae, a Brat, Whether 8 or 22
northernjezabel25 November 2022
I wanted to like Shauna, the show. The only good thing about it is her sweet family. They literally walk on eggshells around her and bend over backwards to please her.

Shauna is easily annoyed by being mistaken for an 8 year old but unfortunately her health issues make that a regular occurrence. However, her attitude is actually worse than that of a spoiled 8 year old, let alone a 22 year old. And let's face it, even 22 is young, so she's got a long way to go of people treating her like a baby, especially when she acts like one.

I am surprised it's on season two but people will get tired real quick if she continues being a spoiled 22 that looks and acts like an 8 year old.

Her family is so sweet and so supportive of her, she's so blessed and hasn't got a clue.

Very annoying
teeterssheila14 June 2022
My daughter recommended this show and I really tried to get into it but other than the fact that she's short and looks like she's 8 years old..I found it very uninteresting. She tries to act like an adult to prove to everyone she's 22...but it fell flat for me. What really turned me off was her complaining about everything and everyone. I wish her the best in life..I just don't find her life all that interesting.
