Norman Lear was not a man to shy away from controversy. If anything, he sprinted toward it, knowing that doing so would help open people’s minds to pervasive American issues related to discrimination, human rights, and more. Through his landmark sitcoms like “All in the Family,” “Maude,” “Sanford and Son,” “One Day at a Time” (twice!), and “Good Times” (also twice!), Lear helped American families address thorny political and social topics by bringing those circumstances into their living rooms every week.
But one episode has long stood out as his most controversial: “Maude’s Dilemma,” a two-part episode airing in the first season, wherein the lead character (played by Bea Arthur) decides to get an abortion. At the time, abortions were legal in the state of New York (where Maude and her family lived), but the Roe v. Wade verdict was still two months away. CBS was wary about...

The legacy of Good Times continues 50 years on, as Netflix rolls out an animated reboot of the series on April 12.
The original CBS sitcom, created by Eric Monte and Mike Evans and developed by Norman Lear, offered a heartfelt focus on a working-class Black family and starred Esther Rolle as Florida Evans and John Amos as husband James, who were raising three kids in a Chicago public housing project. Rolle and Amos originated their characters on Maude, a spinoff of Lear’s seminal comedy All in the Family.
BernNadette Stanis, who was a teen when she landed her first-ever role as middle child Thelma, tells The Hollywood Reporter that Lear let her improvise audition lines with Jimmie Walker, who was already cast as older bro J.J. “I started in on Jimmie just like I would treat my real brothers,” says Stanis, who recalls stunning Walker when she playfully smacked his shoulder.

Kerry Washington and Elisabeth Moss will star in a limited series adaptation of the Araminta Hall novel “Imperfect Women” at Apple TV+, Variety has learned.
Annie Weisman will adapt the book for the screen. Weisman previously created the Apple dramedy series “Physical” starring Rose Byrne, which aired for three seasons at the streamer.
“Imperfect Women” is described as an “unconventional, psychological thriller examining a crime that shatters the lives of a decades-long friendship of three women. ‘Imperfect Women’ is a mystery complicated by perspective that explores guilt and retribution, love and betrayal, and the compromises we make that alter our lives irrevocably. As the investigation unravels, so does the truth about how even the closest relationships can change over time.”
“From the moment I received Araminta’s novel, I couldn’t put it down,” said Moss. “It was such an electrifying read; I fell in love with it immediately. I...

Hulu plans to celebrate April 20 with Jimmy Kimmel.
The Disney-backed streamer has handed out a six-episode series order for High Hopes, a docuseries following two brothers running a cannabis shop in Los Angeles with Kimmel on board to exec produce.
Hulu describes High Hopes as a “workplace reality series following Belarus-born brothers Slava and Mishka and their stoned crew through the trials and tribulations of taking their cannabis business to new heights. As one of the oldest cannabis dispensaries in Hollywood, Mmd attracts a wild mix of weed-loving customers and is a home away from home for their Og employees who work hard and smoke harder! This season builds to their biggest day of the year — 4.20 — as the gang attempts to expand nationwide and release their own top-shelf cannabis brand. Will they find what they’re looking for or will their hopes go up in smoke?”

“Good Times,” which celebrates its 50th anniversary on Feb. 8, suffered from an identity crisis during its six-season run on CBS. So much so, the lead actors — Esther Rolle and John Amos — would leave the popular second spinoff of ‘All in the Family”(Rolle would eventually return) because the sitcom changed focus.
Norman Lear ruled the airwaves in the 1970s. He blew up the conception of a family sitcom in 1971 with the CBS sitcom “All in the Family” which focused on a working class family from Queen lead by the bigoted patriarch Archie Bunker (Carroll O’Connor). During the first season, Bea Arthur guest starred as Maude, Edith Bunker’s (Jean Stapleton) favorite cousin who was the antithesis of Archie-outspoken, much married, ultra-liberal.
And after a second appearance on “All in the Family,” Arthur got her own series “Maude” in the fall of 1972. The breakout performer on that series was Esther...

When it comes to Lay’s potato chips, it’s long been hard to eat just one. On Friday on ABC, it may also be hard to watch just a single commercial for the popular snack.
Disney has sold one third of all of Friday’s national advertising inventory on ABC to PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay so that the snacking giant can run — and run again — eight different commercials for Lay’s potato chips that show actor Stephen Tobolowsky going through a scenario similar to that from the 1993 comedy “Groundhog Day” in which he is stuck repeating his actions in a time loop — with a different flavor of Lay’s in each run-through (and a growing sense of desperation).
The plan marks the first time that Disney has teamed up with a single client for a day-ong sponsorship. The Frito-Lay ads will also surface on Hulu.

Norman Lear was still active in developing television shows at age 101.
The television icon, who passed away Dec. 5 of natural causes, was in recent weeks working on his TV slate, including redeveloping a reboot of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman after TBS exited the scripted originals business and the cable network released the project, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
“He loved the slate and was excited to bring it to the world,” a source close to Lear says.
Schitt’s Creek alum Emily Hampshire remains attached to take on the role originally played by Louise Lasser as well as co-write and exec produce the live-action update. The comedy landed at TBS on Lear’s 99th birthday on July 27, 2021, after months in development at Sony Pictures Television, where Lear and Brent Miller’s Act III Productions remains based with an active overall deal.

Norman Lear changed television. That, we know, is an absolute fact, and I’ll get to it in a moment. But what really saddens me at the news of Norman Lear’s death, at 101, is he won’t be here anymore to serve as a voice of reason as the United States continues to lose its mind.
Lear was a World War II hero who spent much of his life defending democracy via what he put on our television screens and also in his high-profile advocacy work. He often talked of what inspired him to be politically active: At 9 years old, Lear was tinkering with his radio when he discovered the bile spewing from anti-Semitic broadcaster Father Charles Coughlin over the airwaves.
“I think about it all the time,” Lear told me in 2019, when I spoke with him multiple times for a Variety cover (among the several times I had...

Broadcast television, the medium to which Norman Lear dedicated most of his career, will honor him in primetime Wednesday evening.
In a rare joint effort, all of the major broadcast networks will run a simulcast of “an on-air in memoriam card” paying tribute to the iconic TV writer and producer. The tribute, “in recognition of Norman Lear’s vast accomplishments and influence across television,” will run on CBS, ABC, NBC, Fox, and The CW at 8 p.m., the networks said in a statement.
Lear died Tuesday at 101 years old.
His death sparked a flood of tributes from actors, writers, executives, networks and companies, all honoring his career, which spanned the 1950s into the 2020s.
While his work in Hollywood as both a writer and producer spanned both film and television, there was perhaps no one else more closely associated with the medium of broadcast TV over the course of his career.

Following its surprise 2022 Emmy win for Best Variety Series Directing, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” is out of the running for the same prize this year, leaving an opportunity for “Saturday Night Live” to bounce back and achieve its 12th victory in the category. It does, however, face several formidable challengers, including “The Problem with Jon Stewart,” the host of which once starred on “The Daily Show,” which notably halted a “Saturday Night Live” success streak in 2015.
“Saturday Night Live” is the only former winner in this directing lineup, while “The Problem with Jon Stewart” stands as the only new nominee. The three other returning contenders are “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” and “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which have now amassed a collective total of 18 mentions in this category.

This story about “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter” first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Norman Lear has been winning Emmys for more than 50 years, so it makes perfect sense that he’s back in the race this year. His first two came in 1971 for his groundbreaking series “All in the Family,” while his fifth and sixth came in 2019 and 2020 for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience” specials that included real-time reenactments of “All in the Family” episodes.
The last of those came when he was 98 years old, making him the oldest Emmy winner in history. So when Lear turned 100 in the summer of 2022, it made sense that ABC, the network that aired “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” would embrace the ensuing tribute special “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter,” and...

Although the Emmy Award for Best Pre-Recorded Variety Special has not gone to a retrospective program of any kind since the category was established in 2018, several such winners were crowned over the preceding decades when all variety specials competed for the same prize. This year’s pre-recorded program lineup happens to include two televised celebrations of industry legends, one of which – “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” – is heavily favored to become the first special of its kind to achieve this exact honor.
The other commemorative special that could block the Burnett one’s path to victory is “Norman Lear: 100 Years of Music & Laughter.” Based on the untested nature of their format, both will have to watch out for every one of their fellow nominees, which include “Lizzo: Live in Concert” and Netflix stand-up specials starring John Mulaney, Trevor Noah, and Wanda Sykes.

White House Plumbers shouldn’t require a spoiler warning. The HBO miniseries is about the Watergate scandal. But, since it’s told from the perspective of Nixon’s political saboteurs, E. Howard Hunt (Woody Harrelson) and G. Gordon Liddy (Justin Theroux), the five-episode satirical drama covers a ton of ground that the average person is likely coming upon for the first time.
“There are a lot of people who know Nixon resigned, maybe they’ve heard the word Watergate, maybe they only know ‘gate,’ like they’ve seen this-gate and that-gate. There’s an opportunity here to just let people know what President Nixon did. It’s a story where, maybe it’s been long enough that it’s time to remind people. But now, let’s go one step further,” said David Mandel, who directed all five episodes and is an executive producer alongside the show’s creators and writers,...

Jamie Foxx is looking to get back into the spotlight as soon as possible, as it was just announced that he and his daughter Corinne will be co-hosting the game show We Are Family, set to premiere on Fox next year.
The news comes the week after Corinne Foxx revealed that her father Jamie had been released from the hospital following a “medical complication.” The details of that episode have yet to be disclosed, leading to much speculation as to what happened with Jamie. Corinne Foxx, who has been the de facto spokesperson for Jamie, didn’t help matters much when she announced that he had actually been out for some time, posting on Instagram, “update from the family: Sad to see how the media runs wild. My Dad has been out of the hospital for weeks, recuperating. In fact, he was playing pickleball yesterday! Thanks for everyone’s prayers and support!

The HBO drama “The Leftovers” (2014 – 2017) created by Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta remains arguably one of the most Emmys-overlooked shows of all time. The series received only one Emmy nomination during its three-season run, and not even for the universally acclaimed lead performances by actors Justin Theroux or Carrie Coon. The duo might have had bad luck back then, but they’re both returning to overtake the Emmys this year in the Movie/Limited Series acting categories.
The acting was undoubtedly one of the strongest and most compelling assets of “The Leftovers.” The chief of police, Kevin Garvey, who goes on different levels of mental exploration, was Theroux’s first main TV protagonist role. Coon started off the series as a supporting character — grieving mother and wife Nora Durst — in season 1. She continued as the co-lead opposite Theroux until the end of the series. Despite their powerful presence on screen,...

The White House Plumbers (accidentally) took down the presidency, but can Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux take down their Emmy competition? The “White House Plumbers” stars are both contending in Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor, but only Harrelson is currently predicted to earn a nomination at the moment, sitting in fourth place, while Theroux is in ninth. If you’re predicting just one of them, you might want to reconsider that because this category is kinder to double noms than you might think.
Since 2000, there have been 10 projects that have fielded a pair of nominees in limited series/TV movie actor. And half of them hailed from HBO, home to “White House Plumbers” as well. In 2004, “Something the Lord Made” nabbed bids for Mos Def and Alan Rickman. Four years later, “Recount” stars Kevin Spacey and Tom Wilkinson faced off. ABC has extended its deal with Jimmy Kimmel for the comedian’s late-night talk show “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” for another three years, which will take him through Season 23.
“After two decades at ABC, I am now looking forward to three years of what they call ‘quiet quitting,’” he joked in a statement Tuesday.
The extension of Kimmel’s self-titled Emmy-winning series will make him one of the longest-running hosts on TV, among the likes of Jay Leno, whose late-night show lasted 22 seasons.
“For 20 years, Jimmy Kimmel has been a huge part of the ABC family and the heartbeat of late-night television,” Craig Erwich, president of ABC Entertainment, Hulu & Disney Branded Television Streaming Originals, said in a statement. “Not only has he entertained our audiences night after night with his sharp comedy, dynamic interviews and irreverent humor, but he has gotten us through some of the most momentous events in our history with optimism and heart.

Jimmy Kimmel is no longer vacillating.
The comedian is staying in late-night after extending his contract with ABC for a further three years.
The deal ends a year of speculation within the late-night community after Kimmel told Howard Stern that he was debating whether to stick or twist.
Cancellations/Renewals Scorecard: TV Shows Ended Or Continuing In 2021-22 Season
The pact will keep Kimmel as host and exec producer of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! through its 23rd season. January will mark the 20th anniversary of the show, which premiered in January 2003.
The deal means that he will surpass Jay Leno, who hosted NBC’s The Tonight Show for 22 years — though Kimmel still has a few years to go to catch up to Conan O’Brien, who spent 28 years in late-night; Johnny Carson, who hosted The Tonight Show for 30 years; and Kimmel’s hero David Letterman, who spent 33 years in late-night.

Jimmy Kimmel isn’t going anywhere.
Despite flirting with moving on for years now, the ABC host has agreed to a three-year extension. The lucrative new pact will take his Emmy-nominated Jimmy Kimmel Live! through its 23rd season, making Kimmel one of the longest-tenured talk show hosts in television.
“After two decades at ABC, I am now looking forward to three years of what they call ‘quiet quitting,'” he joked in a statement Tuesday.
The news is a considerable win for ABC, which, as a result, won’t have to try to reinvent the time period at an already challenging time for linear television. Moreover, Kimmel has proved himself a major asset for the network and its parent Disney, well beyond his nightly hour of late night hosting. He regularly appears at the company’s annual upfront presentation, where he skewers his...

One of the more awkward moments that took place during the 2022 Primetime Emmy Awards was when Quinta Brunson won her well-deserved Best Comedy Writing trophy for penning the pilot of ABC’s “Abbott Elementary.” She was forced to give her acceptance speech while standing next to a “passed out” Jimmy Kimmel who, as explained by co-presenter Will Arnett, got hammered at the bar after losing yet another Emmy.
Backstage in the press room, the writer/actor/producer joked to reporters that she “might punch [Kimmel] in the face” for ruining her Emmy moment. While celebrity slaps definitely go viral, we have an even better idea for Brunson that doesn’t involve physical touching — remember, we’re still in a worldwide pandemic!
Since Brunson will actually be a guest on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” this Wednesday, she should get the ultimate revenge by lying down on the floor next to him throughout his entire monologue.

“I’m the one in the white hat,” Norman Lear announces as he and his producing partner, Brent Miller, several decades his junior, appear in Zoom boxes in late August.
At 100, the “newly minted centurion,” as he proudly describes himself, still appreciates a laugh. Amazon Freevee has given the greenlight to “Clean Slate,” a new comedy from Norman Lear’s Act III Productions, starring Laverne Cox and comedian George Wallace. The original comedy has been in development at Freevee since February 2021, back when the ad-supported streamer was known as IMDb TV.
“Clean Slate,” which comes from Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen, centers on car wash owner Henry (Wallace), whose estranged child comes home to Alabama after 17 years. But he must do some soul searching as he comes to terms with the fact that his adult child is a trans woman, Desiree (Cox). There’s no word yet on an episodic order, when the series might shoot or an estimated premiere date.
Ewen serves as executive producer and writer on “Clean Slate,” and he has story credit along with Cox and Wallace. Cox will also serve as an executive producer on the show, while Wallace is a producer.

The special was officially titled The Pepsi Super Bowl Lvi Halftime Show Starring Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar and 50 Cent.
Notably, this is the first time that a Super Bowl halftime show has prevailed in the category, although previous halftime shows have won in other crafts categories. Where else but at the Emmys could you expect to see legendary TV producer Norman Lear go up against hip-hop legends like Snoop Dogg, Eminem, and Kendrick Lamar? They’re all nominated for Best Variety Special (Live), one of the widest-ranging categories at this year’s Creative Arts Emmys. Who among these strange bedfellows will prevail?
According to the combined predictions of more than 1,000 Gold Derby users, the award will go to Lear and his fellow producers for “Live in Front of a Studio Audience,” the recurring program that features live performances of classic Lear sitcoms, in this case “The Facts of Life” and “Diff’rent Strokes.” It gets leading odds of 10/3, and for good reason: it won both times it was nominated before (2019-2020). In 2020 it defeated a Super Bowl Halftime Show, an Oscars telecast, and a Tonys telecast. This year it’s up against another Halftime Show, Oscars telecast,...

While NBC’s Primetime Emmy telecast on September 12 will likely get the most attention from the media and TV fans, it’s the Creative Arts Awards where the vast majority of trophies are handed out. Night 1 of the Creative Arts Emmys will take place Saturday, September 3 at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and will focus primarily on animation and unscripted fare. Gold Derby editors Denton Davidson, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon recently got together to wage a war of words over their predictions for many of these races. Watch the editors’ Emmy predictions video slugfest above.
For Best Animated Program our staffers reach a consensus that Netflix newbie “Arcane” will pull off a win over more established favorites like “Rick and Morty,” “The Simpsons” and “Bob’s Burgers” as well as MCU’s “What If?” Daniel notes, “I think after ‘Primal’ won, that told me that the show that stands out here will likely win.” Denton agrees adding, “It also just won three juried awards. It cleaned house there and it’s the only one among the nominees that just took home three juried awards.

Even though nominations for the 74th annual Emmy Awards were announced a month ago, an exclusive list of individuals have reason to celebrate all over again. The TV academy recently added the nominations credits for producers on series. A whopping 27 performers, writers, and directors now have two or more bids in 2022 for their work in front of and behind the camera.
Extending his advantage at the top of this impressive list, Bill Hader has received six nominations this year. He returns to the Comedy Actor category for “Barry,” earned bids for Comedy Writing and Comedy Directing for the HBO series for episodes “starting now” and “710N,” respectively, and now adds a nomination in the Comedy Series category as an executive producer. The performer also netted a Comedy Guest Actor bid for his hilarious turn as relatives Igor, Gregor, and Timor on an 11th season episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Nothing has been set in stone for now, but Norman Lear and Brent Miller have a pretty good idea what they’d like to do if ABC decides to air another edition of Live In Front of a Studio Audience.
“We’ve talked about Maude for a handful of years and I guess now more than ever, it feels like the right choice,” says Miller, who joined Lear for Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees. “Because of obvious reasons with Roe v. Wade [being overturned], and it having one of the most iconic episodes of television, not just for Maude but for television in general.”
Miller is speaking about the 1972 two-parter dubbed “Maude’s Dilemma,” in which the comedy’s title character played by Bea Arthur discovers that, at 47, she was pregnant. At the time, Lear — who created the show for CBS — opted to have Maude terminate her pregnancy because of her age.

That makes the feat of capturing an Emmy nomination all the more impressive, and each of these nominated programs participating in today’s Deadline’s Contenders Television: The Nominees award season event deserve their accolades.

When the Emmy Awards 2022 nominations were announced on July 12, producers were not included among the nominees in many categories. That is standard procedure by the Television Academy as they vet the possible producers. As of last night, those names have been added to the Emmys.com website.
Who are the 50+ celebrity producers who just received extra nominations? Many were expected, such as Jason Bateman (“Ozark”), Quinta Brunson (“Abbott Elementary”), Bill Hader (“Barry”), Bob Odenkirk (“Better Call Saul”) and Jason Sudeikis (“Ted Lasso”).
Check out our list below, and you’ll also see some pleasant surprises. Although snubbed for acting categories, Selena Gomez, Ben Foster (“The Survivor”) and Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan: The Movie”) are now 2022 Emmy nominees.
All of these actors/actresses have additional nominations than what is currently indicated on IMDb (most for producing; some as hosts):

Can that nostalgic feeling be enough to garner an Emmy nomination? If the 2022 list of nominees is any guide, the answer is yes.
In the live variety special category, the proof is in the pudding. Per usual, the Grammys, the Tonys and the Oscars — slap and all — are nominated. However, the final two slots are filled by ABC’s “Live in Front of a Studio Audience: The Facts of Life and Diff ’rent Strokes” and NBC’s “Pepsi Super Bowl Lvi Halftime Show.”
The Norman Lear and Jimmy Kimmel live special has been nominated each time it has aired previously — first for the recreation of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons” in 2019 and in 2020, with “Good Times” in the mix. With “The Facts of Life” and “Diff ’rent Strokes” this year, not only were old stories retold, more A-list stars — and talent from the original shows— joined in.
