Flashback episodes always make for some of the best of the show, and this one was no exception.
Rose and Damon's back and forth, as they sniped at each other about what she was saying to Elena, was amusing. I like that she has a snark-y side to her. Stefan's "Shut-up, Damon." was also great.
While I appreciated Caroline sticking to "the girlfriend code"/keeping Elena's secret from Stefan like she'd promised to, she really shouldn't be doubting herself and her lying ability/duplicity (as we saw a couple episodes ago, when she managed to fool KATHERINE - and was rightfully proud at herself for doing it). I guess she just knew Stefan would be harder to lie to than Katherine was because, unlike Katherine, Stefan is now Caroline's friend.
I was happy to see Katherine again. She made a good entrance (all pale, hanging hair and rasp-y voiced). It's easy to forget that Nina was acting to herself in these scenes, because she truly makes us believe in these two completely different characters. And very smart of Elena to not only just give Katherine a tiny bit of blood at a time, but also to use a stick to push the cup over the line (and retrieve it) so that she never was able to get grabbed by Katherine. A less intelligent character (of which there are many on other lesser shows) wouldn't have thought of that. I very much enjoyed all the scenes between Elena & Katherine and the exchange of info. Any who doubt Nina's acting ability should be silenced by how well she totally brings to life these two characters (as well as managing to even portray a 'third' character of sorts - that is, Katerina when she was human).
I'd been fearing for Rose ever since she managed to survive last episode, but especially in this episode when she threw Damon up against the car (after he'd just threatened her) and told him "I'm older than you and stronger" - since that was what Lexi said to him in '162 Candles'...and look where that got her. Damon doesn't appreciate it when someone can kick HIS butt. I thought for sure he was going to off Rose. I was very glad that he saved her when Elijah broke the window, and she was exposed to sunlight. Speaking of that special glass which the UV rays can't penetrate...I guess Angel wasn't the only one to use it.
Interesting that Rose was the one to give Katerina the vampire blood necessary for her to become a vampire (along with the hanging of herself). Certainly didn't take Katerina long to embrace her evil vampire self and use Rose's human as shield, as well as a food source at the same time. One thing you can say about her, she sticks to what she believes. "I will always look out for myself" are definitely the words she lives by.
A really great scene was the Stefan/Caroline one where he told her she reminds him of Lexi. The fact that Caroline asked him to tell her about Lexi and he said "I will, some other time." gives me hope that we may well get an episode sometime in the future featuring flashbacks to Stefan & Lexi hanging out. I *really* want to see this. Please, writers! I enjoyed Caroline's "Ew, no!" response to Stefan thinking Elena was with Damon.
Lauren Cohan did good in her scene after having been burned. I totally bought her fear of Klaus.
Nina killed it in the scene where Katerina returns home to find her family slaughtered by Klaus.
Possibly the best line of the episode was Katherine's "I'll be the safest psychotic bitch in town." line to Stefan, pointing out that she'll be the only one protected from Klaus by her being stuck in the tomb.
I liked the Damon & Rose getting drunk/making out/post-coital scenes and their discussion of turning off their 'switches'. They do work well together. Though I'm sure it's only a matter of time before she's offed, sadly.
The flashback scenes all looked great.
I still don't like Elijah. His hair in the flashback was on par with Damon's (that we've seen in past episodes), hilarity-wise. I hope they permanently kill him sooner rather than later. Next time BEHEAD him, Salvatores, then burn the body. Make sure he's actually *dead*. Though it's interesting that vampires as old as Elijah can compel other vampires like Slater (who I thought resembled Misha Collins, who plays the angel Castiel in Supernatural...especially during his hippie stage in that one Season 5 episode). I really don't wish to refer to the older vampires as 'The Originals' - sounds like a lame band name.
Bonnie's storyline bored me. Considering that I've actually been kinda liking her with Jeremy - since they're less annoying when they're sharing scenes together - it's a shame that it looks as if this won't continue.
Nina was awesome this episode. She had so many different things to portray, but especially her breaking down in Stefan's arms...I almost felt exhausted FOR poor Nina. I also liked seeing Katherine have an almost 'human' moment as she looked at drawings of her family.
This show really doesn't slow down. It's succeeded in not only living up to Season 1, but is coming close to almost surpassing it. Kudos, TVD, for not suffering from the second season slump that so many shows seem to. Can't wait for the show to return.
