There's a full moon.
Mason (Taylor Kinney) cashes out at a bar, followed by a guy looking funny at him at another table. The guy follows him out, shoving him, saying he knows about him and Marla. Mason denies he's messing with her and tries to talk him down, saying he's just drunk.
The guy whales on Mason, getting him on the ground. Mason fights him off, getting up, grabbing him around the waist and tackling him to the ground. Jimmy's head cracks on the pavement. He's dead.
Back at the Lockwood's, Mason tells the story to Tyler (Michael Trevino), explaining that every full moon since then he's had to sedate himself and chain himself down, or he'll kill everything in his path. He warns Tyler to be careful -- any death at his hands and he'll have a lifetime of it.
Mason asks for the moonstone in return for answering Tyler's questions. Tyler says he's not sure where it is, but goes through the motions of opening his dad's safe in the floor. Mason still claims it's only for sentimental value. Tyler says he doesn't know where it is.
Elena (Nina Dobrev) tells Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) about Mason Lockwood the werewolf, but tells him to stay out of it. Stefan (Paul Wesley) sneaks up on Elena in her bedroom and they rehearse the plan for the day's fight in front of Caroline (Candice King), for Katherine's benefit.
They work out code phrases. When he says "I can't do this anymore," it means "I love you." Aw, vampire code.
Caroline's mom Liz (Marguerite MacIntyre) gets ready for the Historical Society volunteer picture. Caroline warns her mom she's in a mood.
Liz asks what Elena was doing there so late last night (it was Katherine).Caroline says Elena needed to talk. Liz asks Caroline if she's OK, she seems different.
At the Historical Society picnic, Carol Lockwood (Susan Walters) thanks the troops for showing up. Stefan approaches Mason and tries to apologize for Damon (Ian Somerhalder), suggesting a truce. "Tell your brother to watch his back," Mason says.
Stefan points out there's one of him and two of them. He promises Damon will leave him alone. They shake.
Mason walks away and Damon slinks up. Stefan doesn't think the truce will work, he expects Mason to try to stake them both.
In the café, Jeremy can't stop staring at Tyler, the would-be werewolf. He goes to talk to him and ends up being invited home with Tyler and two girls.
Mason tells Sheriff Liz he wants to talk to her about the Council. She denies knowledge of it. He says he knows vampires exist, that there are two of them in town. He names the Salvatores. She says she's watched Damon kill vampires and doesn't believe it.
"What if I can prove it to you?" he asks.
Caroline asks Elena how things are and she says Stefan's been pushing her away because he thinks Katherine will hurt her.
Damon asks Liz what she was talking to Mason about. She makes up a lie about him asking about work in the woods. When he asks what's wrong, she says she's upset over Caroline.
Elena goes to talk to Stefan. Caroline and Damon listen in. Stefan says his "I love you" code and she says hers back.
At the Lockwood house, Jeremy hits it off with Sara as Amy talks to Tyler about that day at the swimming hole. Sara pulls out Jeremy's sketchpad. At first Jeremy objects, then he lets the girls look as he watches Tyler's reaction. It's all drawings of werewolves.
Tyler says he wants to show Jeremy something in the other room, then chokes him against the wall. Jeremy says he knows what Tyler is.
Damon asks Stefan what's up with the "faux drama" in his relationship. A little girl hands Damon a cup of lemonade. He takes a giant swig, then spits it out, choking. Liz watches. It was laced with vervain.
Caroline finds Elena down by the river. Elena apologizes for taking it out on her, saying she's just trying to be a good friend. Caroline says she isn't being a good friend at all -- then she stops when she sees her mom on the phone with someone.
She's telling someone to bring something. Caroline stops her and gives her grief for leaving.
Damon wants to kill Mason for the vervain and expects Stefan to object, but instead he says Mason's making threats and needs to be put down.
Caroline heads for higher ground to try to hear. She can tell something is wrong.
Damon and Stefan corner Mason in the woods. Before they can do anything shots ring out. They're both hit several times with wooden bullets. Liz comes out and injects them with vervain, thanking Mason for being the bait.
Caroline knows something has happened to the boys.
Jeremy tells Tyler he knows about him because of an old diary he found in his house. Tyler says his uncle is a werewolf, but he's not "yet."
He tells Jeremy how the curse is triggered. But he says Mason isn't there for him, he's there for the moonstone, which he pulls out of his pocket.
Liz, Mason and some deputies take the Salvatores down to the old Lockwood dungeon. She tells Mason to leave before she kills them.
Caroline tracks them. They run into Mason in the woods. Mason threatens to tells Caroline's mom about her, and he grabs Elena around the neck before she can charge him.
"I can take you," she tells him. "Wanna bet?" he taunts. "Yea, I do," Caroline says as she grabs him and throws him against a tree then onto the ground, kicking him into another tree. They run off.
In the dungeon, Liz shoots Damon with wooden bullets, wanting answers. She asks how many of them there are and how they walk in the sun. Stefan's not awake.
"But you're my friend," Damon says. "Our friendship was a lie," she says.
Outside, Caroline hears her mom say they have to kill them both. She tells Elena what's going on, but she can't go down into the dungeon because she doesn't want her mom to know what she's become.
One of the deputies grabs Elena, but before they can question her, something streaks through the room in a flash. They can't see her at first, but it's Caroline. She chomps down on one of the deputies, then another, in full vampire flash-frenzy. She pauses, with a blood-streaked face and fangs bared and stares at her horrified mother. "Hi mom," she says.
Later, Elena tends to Stefan, as Damon chews on a deputy to get better. He tries to get Stefan to drink, too. "If there was ever a time to break your diet...." Caroline says. But he resists.
Caroline begs her mom not to tell anyone but Liz asks Damon to kill her instead. He starts to go after her, over the objections of everyone. But he tells them to relax, he's not killing anyone. He says again that Liz is his friend.
Tyler tells Jeremy he doesn't know what the moonstone does, but he's not giving it to his uncle -- just because Mason wants it. The drunken girls come in, see the rock and grab it. They try a tipsy game of keep away.
Tyler follows Sara to the top of the stairs and tries to get it from her, playfully at first, then less so. He yanks it out of her hand and she falls, tumbling all the way down the stairs.
At the bottom, she's not moving. Tyler is horrified.
Then she opens her eyes, announcing she fooled them. She gets up, unhurt.
Caroline comes to the Salvatores'. Damon says it'll take three days for the vervain to leave her mom's system. Damon watches Liz as she calls a deputy saying she'll be out sick for a few days.
Damon tells her they'll compel her once the vervain is out of her system. Caroline is in the hallway when her mom asks Damon to keep Caroline away from her. He reminds her Caroline's her daughter. But Liz says not anymore.
Elena finds Stefan contemplating a chilled bag of blood. He thinks he can learn to control himself on it. He almost died because he was too weak. He thinks he needs to drink it to be able to fight off Katherine. She checks he's serious. He is.
Upstairs, Elena tries to console Caroline. She's scared to go home. She tells Elena that Katherine's going to be there and will want a full report. Elena knows. She asks who Katherine threatened. Matt. Caroline asks what Katherine wants. That's the big question.
Mason leaves a message for Liz, checking on her.
Tyler tells Mason he nearly killed someone today and for a split second he hoped she'd die. He doesn't want to feel that way again. He gives Mason the stone.
Elena tucks Caroline in on the Salvatores' couch. She tells Damon what he did for Liz is the Damon who was her friend. "Stefan didn't drink the people blood, but he needs to. And you know that," Damon says.
Elena finds Stefan, asking him if he really thinks he can control it. He wants to try a little bit every day. She thinks it's worth a try, but she doesn't want him to do it alone. She slices her palm and puts her hand out. "It's you and me, Stefan, always," she says.
He drinks it up, goes all vampire-y and then calms down. She kisses him.
Out in the woods at night, Mason gets into a car with someone. It's Katherine.
Flashback to a year ago in the parking lot. Katherine comes up on Mason. When Mason doesn't understand why Jimmy would think he slept with his girlfriend, Katherine seems to. She hugs him, then smiles fiendishly.
In the car in the woods, she asks him about the stunt with the brothers. She told him to stay away from them, because she wants him focused on the moonstone. He tells her he got it and is rewarded with some making out.
