Don't Call Me Nelly
Prismark103 April 2024
From Sally Wainwright who is known more for darker dramas. This is a hybrid of various genres.

The kernel for Renegade Nell lies in Wainwright's previous show, Gentleman Jack. Based on the true story of landowner Anne Lister, who lived a furtive life as a lesbian.

Nell Jackson (Louisa Harland) is a woman we initially see dressed as a man. She is a widow and is off to see her father and sisters. Then she plans to enlist in the army.

Only Nell has some special powers, that she used to fight off some highwaymen. Only later on Thomas Blancheford, the spoilt son of a squire and the local magistrate kills Nell's father, a publican.

Now Nell plans revenge. Only to be falsely accused of murdering Lord Blancheford.

The show has an interesting fantasy angle. Nell's powers through Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed) a sort of Jiminy Cricket type character.

On the other hand Thomas Blancheford wants to dabble in evil through the influence of the Earl of Poynton (Adrian Lester.)

The first episode rattled along nicely. It was pacy, had some good set peices. The villains are hissable.

The fantasy cod historical setting of England in 1705. Allows the show to have the Bridgerton type casting.

Great pilot episode!

Warning: Spoilers
One of the best pilots I've seen in a long time. Though I gotta say, the concept of a fairy who enters her body and gives her powers is really strange 😂 Not a huge fan of the concept and I kinda wish they'd drawn out the mystery of that a bit longer. But I really really enjoyed this episode! It was a perfect introduction to the world, got me invested and ended very well. The music was amazing! Beautiful score. I love the powerful woman lead who's also a sister and a widow. Very cool character building and I'm excited to see where the story goes as we meet new people. Also Rasalas, or whatever his name is, is such a good man oh my gosh I love him. Super fun! I hope the rest of the show lives up to the well set expectations from this pilot.
