Another Reality Show About Finding Back Up Dancers
lambiepie-227 March 2022
Make no mistake, this is a reality show about a talented Grammy Winning Artist with sold-out shows finding new backup dancers for an upcoming performance and stage show at Bonaroo 2022, which pre-pandemic audiences reached 85,000 folks!

Sounds harmless, right? Yeah. But this Grammy-winning talented artist is Lizzo, and the backup dance troupe she envisions for this show are plus-sized women like her, which she dubs "Big Girls."

However, many reviews about this reality program right here on IMDb have NOT been about that, which is unfortunate. It has been about personal preferences for women to look like "dancers " in shows. The reviews are full of negative stereotypes, mean, nasty adjectives and are missing the point of this reality show.

While some reviewers call this "watching unhealthy" or "promoting unhealthy" lifestyles, this reality program is doing something interesting. It's not doing any of those things; it's the opposite.

This reality show shows you how they have to go through the same grueling processes as ANYONE who wants to be a dancer/choreographer. The sweat, the exhaustion, the payoff - the HARSH rejection and getting the job for a lucky few.

The job. Yes, these are women auditioning for a job, a hard one. Being on the road performing in front of audiences. This reality show gives one a peek as all of them do in performing. As a reviewer, I can't write anything wrong with giving them the same props as I offer other dance performers on reality shows - good luck!! Bring on your best. Many did - some didn't. Jayla was my overall out-of-the-gate favorite, as there were a few others, and the game's name in this reality show is who can sustain the best stamina. STAMINA. There is nothing more healthy in dance & grueling, pressuring touring than stamina.

Even with the "ones that were chosen," there is still no guarantee they will make it to the stage for "Bonaroo ."Yep, just like in most performance dance reality shows.

There is the education here, and it seems like many need to be educated. Why is this really upsetting for those reviewers? Why are they so apt to write "promoting an unhealthy lifestyle" when those women are not sitting WATCHING life happen? They are auditioning and dancing just like ANY OTHER dancer - have THE SAME STORIES, and most importantly, the same talent. I question, all those writing bad reviews, did they look at the show(s); or did they just want to rush to negative judgment?

I applaud Lizzo and these dancers for allowing us to see how the process is none and WHY she chose to choose these dancers for her show. However, this reality show is not that spectacularly different from many dance reality shows. It follows the same formula as the ones preceding it. There's entertainment out there for everyone, and that's a good thing. We all do not have to fall for an appearance ideal, which is a good thing. As long as one is qualified and can do the work and gets the chance to do so - that's all that's needed.

Ignore the haters. This is a fun show!
pinkblueberrycat27 March 2022
I was shocked when I came on here to see people's reviews of this show and found that the ratings have essentially been brigaded by people who hate Lizzo and/or fat Black women loving themselves unapologetically. If competition reality shows aren't for you, that's fine. But writing hateful reviews about the size of the show's cast is shameful behaviour. Yes, this show centres women whose BMI puts them in the 'obese' category. Nowhere (at least, from what I noticed) does the show say that non-fat viewers need to gain weight, or that there are zero health risks associated with being fat.

If you think this show is 'promoting obesity', watch one of the hundreds, if not *thousands* of shows on Amazon Prime where fat people only feature as the butt of fatphobic jokes, or in stereotypical roles (like as nannies). The world is not going to end because of one show where fat people are celebrated.

Anyway, onto the show itself. I didn't have high expectations from a celebrity-fronted reality show, so I was pleasantly surprised by how good this is. Lizzo comes across well and you don't need to be a super-fan to be interested. She seems happy to sit back and let some of her talented contacts go on camera to impart their wisdom about fitness, self love, choreography, and more. The self improvement angle reminds me of Queer Eye, but unlike Queer Eye, this is an extremely female-centred show. I'm not exaggerating when I say that cisgender men practically don't exist in this series. It'll ruffle some people, but as far as I'm concerned, it's a refreshing departure from the norm in TV in that respect! And Lizzo doesn't have time for the stereotype of women as 'catty' and incapable of forging bonds with others that they see as competition. Of course there's drama. It's a reality competition show! But the toxicity is really kept to the minimum compared to other shows that are obvious influences in other ways, such as America's Next Top Model or RuPaul's Drag Race.

If you love to see talented, diverse, and confident women on in the performing arts, you need to see this! Especially if you're dying for some body positive TV since Shrill got cancelled.

It's alright!
kwihui2 April 2022
It was alright but there were too many "fake" emotional moments.

And one moment really caught me was when "Jasmine" took the rightly shining moment for one of the girls who'd won the week's prize - she chose that moment act up with tears, brining focus on her, ruining the moment for the "grrrl" who had won!

We, the viewers, all know and can see why she was upset- in her mind she'd figured she is the one who deserve the win! It's the green eyed monster shining through.

What Isabel said about the Korean people's views were true. However, it's changed great deal. With the affluences and the western influences, there are greater numbers in the "larger" sizes. Both the young men and in the young girls. These issues were never present in the past. They were less able to afford for the most people. However, with the automobile industries and high tech industries on the rise it's citizens became more affluent! And the Western cultures also made it possible to eat better, and everything better overall. So the old thinking has to change! Can't be helped, but to change accordingly.

The larger girls are culture shock to that society. Change or be left behind!

It's great to see these programs, to bring attention to these young peoples struggles. Many are due to their genetics. Many are due to medical conditions, such as with the thyroids mid functioning.

The thing is, to understand that the society is made up of many different people. So give it a break and Stop judging people by their weights, how they look, all external things! You don't know what's going on in their life. The struggles they are going through!

It's not easy being non judgmental, I know, because we are built to judge quickly, it's our survival tool. However, we are not in the life threatening situation so the early judgments is not needed! Take a minute to rid of your prejudices and preconceptions and give them a chance to show their character shine through. I think you will be pleasantly surprised in most cases.

These themes were running throughout the program. I am glad to see that somebody thought this was a great idea, to tell the world that not all men desire those skinny women. In fact, many men desire women with "more meat!"

You can be big/large and be absolutely beautiful! Also be healthy! These young women are proving that!

Good For Them.😊👍

Finally, Humanization
TMV202226 March 2022
I've never written a review for imdb before but when I saw the disgusting review bombing, I felt compelled to do so.

I am a fat woman, and I have never seen a show with so many fat people in it that didn't base its premise around fixing our bodies, especially for fat and trans women of color! The people who are saying this show "promotes bad habits/unhealthiness/etc" haven't even watched this show. They just see fat woc and immediately dismiss it without giving it a chance. Its literally about dancing. Where fat women. Exercise. Constantly on screen. We are not promoting an unhealthy lifestyle for simply existing in our bodies. Fat people and fat women will always exist. Statistically you probably have a fat friend and to those of you typing vitriol of us all over the internet, how do you think they would feel if they could read the things you say about us online?

I love that in this show you can see how the women are positively impacted by a space that Lizzo has created for these women to feel comfortable in their own skin. Before Lizzo, I know I have never thought I was allowed to be sexy, to learn how to accept my body as is, and it brought me to tears to see these women grow and improve throughout their personal and professional lives.

You can tell that Lizzo has control over this show and its premise, she discourages toxicity and looks to foster a group that builds each other up which is a rarity on reality television. This show is such a joy to watch, the women are so talented and always managed to surprise me. I hope this show opens the eyes of people who are straight sized and create more opportunities for fat people around the world to exist in peace.

Thank you Lizzo, for creating opportunities for these women who would not have it otherwise. You've changed the world and me. Watch this show with an open heart.

I AM BLOWN AWAY I LOVE THIS SHOW!!
fwwbtww25 March 2022
As a skinny girl I have never experienced anything these girls have been through but I was able to understand and emphasize with them while watching this, Lizzo is such a good rolemodel and she's a great host for the journey these girls are gonna go through

So after saying all of that this show is legit BADASS the dancing is phenomenal they all dance very great and you have intimate moments with the girls and them accepting and respecting themselves and their bodies this is a very body positivity show it's mainly about Lizzo looking for new background dancers for her performances and tours and she wants to get dancers that are big girls well they put it as grrrls and I love that, and it's sort of a competition show for the 10 spots Lizzo has for her background dancers and 13 girls are brought in and they have to basically compete for the 10 spots but during it they all learn to grow with eachother and bond till the end when it comes to whose securing the 10 spots so the girls stay in a mansion together and you just see day to day each challenge they go through. And of course there's some drama but it doesn't take over the whole show or of how every episode is.

So I Really Recommend it whether your skinny or big or whatever, this show will still make you feel positive about yourself regardless and I love seeing a show that showcases big girl bodies and how girls live with it and embrace it so yes I really recommend it, Everyone should give it a watch I guarantee you'll like it or at least enjoy it :)

Why so much hate?
scarte327 March 2022
I'm not a big girl but I can appreciate the intent and purpose of this show. I certainly can't dance like these girls do. I'm glad they're being given the opportunity to showcase their gifts and chase their dreams! Who doesn't love that???

A hater. That's who. Ignore them.

Normalizing unhealthiness
Aris2514 May 2022
Is being fat the only vice out there? Obviously not. But it's the only vice these days with a strange tendency of being considered rude to point out. It's not rude to point out that smoking or drinking is bad. So why is it rude to do the same for overeating?

Whether being fat is beautiful is a matter of individual preference. But whether it's healthy, that's science and the answer is no. Pretending like it's ok to be this fat is misleading. Fat people should not be attacked or made to feel less, but accepting bad health should not be encouraged.

3 stars for the ladies who obviously try hard to be good at what they do.

Feel-Good Positive Fun & Haters Hate It
antevasin-2375825 March 2022
First off these ladies are talented! They defy conceptions (at least mine anyway) on the athleticism of plus-sized people. Their skills and abilities are awe-inspiring. Most of all, these dancers are just eye-popping good. They bring it!!

Lizzo keeps the energy high and on the empowering/ positive side. In how many reality shows do you hear the host say, "no toxicity"? Furthermore, have you ever heard that sentiment expressed on an all women show? This show gives viewers a joyful 50 minutes of smiles, cheers and to be wowed.

Some are offended that the show presents these ladies as capable, lovable and lovely. Derisive comments about the bodies of the dancers - cowardly masked under the pretense of concerns for their health - seem to say that their talents are irrelevant. The comments wish to ignore the fact that Lizzo's dancers are expected to and can dance a 90 minute set - no small feat for most people. Also, I didn't see anyone proselytizing unhealthy eating. If viewers are looking to be offended by the presence of the dancers, at least be honest about the true motives. They have nothing to do health by the way.

The show not only gives these ladies permission to shine and show off their talents, it insists upon it. And as a result this show crackles with feel good vibes.

Unfortunately we live in a cancel culture age wherein, for some poor souls, dragging others down into their darkness is as effortless as breathing. Hopefully the message that these dancers are born to shine, will enable all of us to sparkle when the darkness endeavors to win the day.

Actual Honest Review
katcallender26 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First, Lizzo's established Big Grrls group are not actually big girls. When you meet the official members throughout the show, the biggest girl I saw was about a size 14. So how are you going to have all these size 20+ girls on and complain about their stamina?! Second, for stamina being such a huge issue, how the hell did Jayla make it so far? She had messy lines, super bad stamina and her face always looked so painful when she danced...just a straight ugly look on her face throughout all her dances. Overall it felt like they were pandering a bit tbh. When Lizzo finally starts to pick her dancers, to no one's surprise, they're all the smallest ones lol! Also, Moesha was probably one of the best bigger dancers and she was let go because of one ankle issue? When Jayla had two bad ankles and a knee? Come on now...

Pioneering the path for self love and acceptance
rowshanreordan26 March 2022
Lizzo's show is groundbreaking and will undoubtedly make many uncomfortable and outraged and her unabashed acceptance of large bodies. Her focus on bringing women up instead of tearing them down is refreshing and well past due in our society and on reality shows. This show is about strength, coordination, commitment and confidence. These large bodied women do things that most women could not do regardless of body size. Thank you Lizzo and the team for putting yourselves out there and taking a stance against judgement and undeserved negative messaging around natural bodies of all shapes, sizes and skin tones.

LIzzo lets everything hang out but her real personality
smithnumber9 April 2022
I have to say upfront that as someone in their 50s, I am not the target audience for this show. So while all the "you go girl" and "slay queen" sentiments make me wince, I can see that a younger audience would find it inspirational.

Lizzo herself comes across as a fun lady, somewhat bawdy and sweet at the same time, but I think the show has pigeonholed her into being a hyper-positive role model. All people are a combination of good, bad, positive, critical, mean and kind, but we are only allowed to see the good facets of her personality, making her a one-dimensional host.

I would love to see what her full personality is like. The parts where the camera lingers after she delivers yet another platitude are quite telling - she's almost laughing at herself, joking around. I would have like see more of that.

The contestants themselves aren't really all that exciting - LIzzo is the star of the show, and I think most people are aware that shows like this only exist to prop up the host and increase their fan base. Their journey also lacks any real tension because the eliminations are not part of every show, and it's reasonably obvious who is going to make the cut.

All in all, it's a a good time passer and for some it will be more than that. Someone a lot younger and less cynical than me.

I was really liking this show until they let Isabel go and kept Jayla. Jayla was giving attitude, and was worst than Isabel and just didn't fit! I have a feeling I know why that choice was made and it is dumb. I highly DO Not recommend.

Superb on every single level!
kimskava25 March 2022
A complete departure from the unreal expectations society has for women's bodies. These young ladies are working out for hours every day, promoting positivity, shooting for their dreams, and sharing of themselves by being vulnerable. Anyone who pretends not to see or understand this is exactly the type of individual Lizzo's attempting to educate.....but they may be past hope...lol.

Representation Matters
jstanton-3263026 March 2022
How refreshing to see a positive reality show featuring real women, with real bodies. I loved that the tiny amount of cattiness was shut down immediately. Ecstatic about this proving to the masses that just because a woman is big, doesn't meant she's unhealthy and doesn't workout. Kudos to Lizzo and this entire team for putting this together. It's important and necessary!

The dance show I've been waiting for.
pihrrvc26 March 2022
Great energy. Great music. Great dancers. Period.

Reality / competition shows can be a little awkward. This didn't have too many obviously staged moments and was well edited. The main content of dancing; choreo; and workshops was excellent. The cast of characters was delightful. Soo many real, moving moments.

Yeah honestly don't waste your time watching. I gave it a shot by watching two episodes. I'm all for representation but Lizzo is portrayed as incredibly self centered on the show and I could not get past it. Don't even get me started with that theme song * eye roll*

Great Entertainment!!
ichiniikunsan2 June 2022
Lizzo's show is fun and filled with positive self-affirment. Every dancer is awesome, and I like how people are not always eliminated either; providing a safe space for the dancers to do activities that boost their esteem and build friendships.

I would like to see longer dance scenes if there is a season 2.

LIZZO IS CHANGING YOUR MIND!
cbachelor-2207525 March 2022
Daily Lizzo is on the grind to break that image of someone else's ideal of how a body should look. She is that constant reminder, even when you get sucked into the false images everywhere, that you are beautiful in the skin and body you were born with, and you still can be an icon. In every way, I am glad she exists and is the star she was meant to be. This show is inspirational. Period.

Empowering, but needs work
BlackEden22 June 2022
It's great to see the diversity and inclusion of different gender identities, beliefs, sexual orientations, ethnicities and body sizes in this show. A lot of the activities performed are also based around shattering toxic, patriarchal, euro-centric ideas of what women should be, which is fantastic.

As a woman, who also has struggled with an ED, I found myself tearing up alongside some of the dancers and their similar stories and struggles. I also found myself smiling and feeling empowered when these beautiful women found their self worth, and supported each other.

The only thing that bothered me was the food component. Being active isn't sufficient enough to maintain health. The dancers were being fed pre-packaged, deep fried, high meat meals, and these are all known to be top contributors of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and other obesity-related diseases.

We should all feel beautiful in our bodies and learn to love ourselves in order to improve our mental health. However, at the same time, we should also be learning how to take care of ourselves physically by adopting healthier eating habits (also for the sake of our planet). Plus, what we eat not only affects our physiology, but eventually our mental health as well - it is a feedback loop.

I hope Lizzo starts to care more about the long term health of herself and her dancers. You could see how limited many were in their mobility and stamina due to the basic physics behind their weight vs gravity. Start with eating some fresh vegetables, folks!

These women are in shape!
jillcarlier727 March 2022
This show goes to show you that you can be fit but still plus sized!

I find it strange that its rated below 3.0 but the people that actually look the time to write a written view rated it 9/10!

This is so different than what people are used to...

Do you know there are plus sized woman who eat amazingly AND exercise hard? This show does NOT promote unhealthy living, as some have stated....

I know people who eat super healthy and exercise and who are thin...who have gotten cancer...or died of heart disease...

stop thinking you know so much, people, and accept reality! OPEN YOUR HEART AND MINDS!!!

Thank you, Lizzo!!! Go Big Grrls!!!!
