Fred Schepisi is set to direct Israel-based thriller “The Dimona Affair,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is based on the story of a whistleblower who claimed Israel was building a nuclear weapons program. (The country has always denied it has nuclear weapons).
After giving The Sunday Times of London a detailed interview about the program in the 1980s, causing an international scandal, “low level” Israeli nuclear technician Mordechai Vanunu fled the country. He was then reportedly lured to Rome by a female Israeli secret service agent in a honeytrap operation where he was kidnapped and repatriated to Israel. Vanunu eventually stood trial for espionage and treason before being convicted and jailed.
Schepisi, whose last feature project was “Words and Pictures” starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binochein 2013, is set to direct from a script penned by screenwriter and investigative journalist Morrie Rosmarin.

Studiocanal Australia and Goalpost Pictures are developing a feature based on the true story of members of the Vienna Mozart Boys’ Choir and their choirmaster who were trapped in Australia during World War II.
Keith Thompson is writing the first draft and Goalpost’s Rosemary Bright will produce.
It’s the second project backed by the Studiocanal Australia Cultivator Fund which launched in March 2017, but has only just been announced following Screen Australia’s decision to provide development funding.
The 20-strong choir, aged 8 to 14, arrived in Australia in 1939. When war broke out they were declared enemy aliens after their final concert in Perth. The choristers were “adopted” by Melbourne’s Archbishop Daniel Mannix, who made them the choir of his cathedral and arranged for their education and board and lodging with local families.
The choirmaster, Dr Georg Gruber, moved into the home of the visit’s sponsor, Henrietta Marsh.

Stormy Daniels and Kirstie Alley are reported to be among the celebrity participants in the new season of Channel 5’s “Big Brother” in the U.K., which starts Thursday.
British tabloid The Sun cited unnamed sources Monday confirming an “official lineup” of 13 contestants on the show, including Daniels, the former porn star who was allegedly paid off to keep quiet about a sexual encounter with Donald Trump. “Stormy is the biggest signing for this year’s show and she’ll make headlines around the world,” The Sun quoted a source as saying.
On Tuesday, Channel 5 would neither confirm nor deny the participation of Daniels or “Cheers” actress Alley, or the rest of The Sun’s reported lineup. A spokesperson told Variety the names were not official and represented the newspaper’s “amalgamation of speculated names.” The contestants will officially be unveiled at Thursday night’s premiere.

Stormy Daniels, the porn star who claims to have had an affair with Donald Trump, and Cheers actress Kirstie Alley are some of the star names set to appear on the British version of Celebrity Big Brother as Viacom-owned broadcaster Channel 5.
The show, which is produced by Endemol Shine-backed Initial Productions, launches Thursday August 16. The network is theming this summer’s reality hit as The Eye of The Storm and is introducing housemates that have all been caught up in their own media controversies.
British tabloid The Sun reports that Daniels, real name Stephanie Clifford, is the show’s major get. The President of the United States of America will be hoping that the adult film star doesn’t reveal too much more during a possible reality TV stint.
She is reportedly joined by Scientologist Alley, who recently starred on Scream Queens.

Exclusive: Riley Keough and Gina Gammell’s production company Felix Culpa has set Australian filmmaker Simon Stone to adapt and direct Lydia Millet’s New York Times bestseller Sweet Lamb of Heaven: A Novel. Keough is also set to star as Anna in the film and will produce alongside Gammell and Scott Free.
The domestic thriller/psychological horror novel was one of three novels Felix Culpa acquired rights to when they announced their label with Deadline. Sweet Lamb of Heaven follows Anna, a young mother, who is escaping her cold and unfaithful husband, Ned, a businessman who’s just launched his first campaign for political office. Ned chases Anna and their six-year-old daughter from Alaska to Maine, and the two go into hiding in a run-down motel on the coast. The longer they stay, the less the guests in the dingy motel look like typical tourists — and the less Ned resembles a typical candidate.

Hollywood is over-flowing with screen heroines in action films, dramas and comedies, but where are Australia.s?
Two of our most respected film critics/writers have pondered that question and come up with some intriguing theories.
.Is it that so many scripts draw on cinema past? Nothing wrong with that, all art is built on the back of other art, but this might perhaps limit the way writers think about stories," former ABC Radio National critic Julie Rigg posits in the latest edition of Aftrs' journal Lumina.

Justified left us in the middle of some intense moments at the close of last week’s episode, which meant that “Kill the Messenger” had the primary job of cleaning them up. Raylan (Timothy Olyphant), in one of his more genuine scenes, came clean to Art (Nick Searcy) about the tarmac incident. Elsewhere, Ava (Joelle Carter) was set up by her cellmate and a rejected male prison guard (clearly suffering from a severe case of the Napoleon complex), and Johnny (David Meunier) set the stage for a new form of hostile takeover by being one step ahead of everyone else. Then, the credits rolled and viewers were left contemplating the fallout to come.

★★☆☆☆ Poorly timed and fatally flawed, Fred Schepisi's familial Aussie bitchfest The Eye of the Storm (2011) (adapted from the Patrick White novel of the same name) somehow found its way into UK cinemas earlier this year with almost no fanfare. It's hardly surprising when you consider that this is one of the strangest, most mind-boggling dramas outside of Shane Carruth's Upstream Color, seemingly designed as a thespian three-way between Geoffrey Rush, Charlotte Rampling and Judy Davis. Davis is perhaps the only one of this triumvirate to come away with any kudos, such is the flaccid nature of this botched melodrama.
Rampling, last seen in son Barnaby Southcombe's neo-noir I, Anna, hams it up as dying wealthy matriarch Elizabeth Hunter, who watches on with veiled glee as her actor son Basil (Academy Award winner Rush) and aloof, high-society daughter Dorothy (Golden Globe winner Davis) rush to her side in...

Director Fred Schepisi's The Eye of the Storm was long pegged as a potential Oscar contender, but eventually went overlooked completely and now he's back this year with a new romantic dramedy, Words and Pictures, set to premiere at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival. The film stars Clive Owen as a writer whose talent has dried up and Juliette Binoche as an artist struggling to paint. The two clash at the school where they teach, sparking both an unlikely romance and a school-wide war: which is more powerful, the word or the picturec Schepisi is directing from a script by Gerald Di Pego whose screenplays include Message in a Bottle and The Forgotten. Financier/executive producer James M. Vernon has an unusual problem in the Australian film industry: he says he has more money to invest than there are viable projects.
Vernon.s Media Funds Management (Mfm) has co-financed a raft of films including Mark Lamprell.s Goddess, Fred Schepisi.s The Eye of the Storm, Simon Wincer.s The Cup, Stephan Elliott.s A Few Best Men and the soon-to-be-released Brian Trenchard-Smith-directed action thriller Absolute Deception.
Among the Mfm co-funded films in post-production are the Spierig brothers. supernatural thriller Predestination, Russell Scott.s 3D IMAX documentary Hidden Universe and Geoff Davis. WW1 drama The Stolen.
The most recent project Mfm co-funded was Trenchard-Smith.s action comedy Hard Drive, shot on the Gold Coast and starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane.
Typically Mfm provides up to 100% of the producer offset, up to 100% on pre-sales and gap financing based on qualified sales agency sales estimates.

Catch up with the last seven days in the world of film
The big story
Now that Cannes is around the corner, the trailers and teasers, posters and flyers are piling up, ready for the great jamboree that is the Croisette competition. But the one that really got us going was the trailer for a little number that didn't get anywhere near the Palais du Festivals: The World's End, the new one from Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, and director Edgar Wright. All of them have been stretching their wings a little since Hot Fuzz – Pegg in Star Trek, Wright with Scott Pilgrim, Frost in the TV adaptation of Money – but their reunion has sparked lots of interest, and fond memories of their previous work. No doubt that's what's behind the plotline – a bunch of middle-aged men get together 20 years after an epic pub crawl to repeat the experience – and find...

Three's the magic number for Shane Black's superhero sequel as it doubles the takings of Iron Man 2. Meanwhile, Michael Winterbottom's Paul Raymond biopic heads south
The winner
After four days, Iron Man 3 was running just 13% behind The Avengers at the same stage of its UK run, suggesting that the film would finish a lot closer to the superhero team-up (£51.9m) than to either of the earlier Iron Man movies. Seven days later, and it's a similar story, with Iron Man 3 at an impressive £24.6m as of Sunday night, a slim 18% behind Avengers at the same point of release. If it continues at a similar pace, Iron Man 3 should end up around £42-43m here. The first Iron Man film maxed out at £17.4m, while the sequel made it to £21.3m, so the third episode looks set to double its predecessor.

The cantankerous, complex, gay Patrick White published his lengthy The Eye of the Storm in 1973, the year he became the first (and still the only) Australian to win the Nobel prize for literature. Adapted by Judy Morris, it's the first major film based on a White novel, and clearly a labour of love for Fred Schepisi, whose first Australian movie this is since A Cry in the Dark, his underrated movie about the Lindy Chamberlain case, an event that touched on various themes of place and national identity that are to be found in White.
It's the story of a rich, egocentric old matriarch, Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) and her two expatriate children, Sir Basil (Geoffrey Rush), an actor living in London, and daughter Dorothy (Judy Davis), a divorced French princess living in Paris, who returns to inherit her wealth. Both are in...

I'm So Excited | The Eye Of The Storm | Gimme The Loot | Robosapien | Come Out And Play | Shootout At Wadala | 21 & Over | Dead Man Down | Dragon | Chimpanzee | It's Such A Beautiful Day | All Stars
I'm So Excited (15)
(Pedro Almodóvar, 2012, Spa) Javier Cámara, Raúl Arévalo, Carlos Areces. 90 mins
Almodóvar responds to his country's economic woes with camp hysteria and Carry On humour. In many ways this airborne disaster farce – anarchic, absurdist, garishly stylish and gleefully debauched – is a return to the Spanish auteur's subversive roots. But there's a serious subtext to the silliness, and the metaphors are brought back down to earth for a satisfying landing.
The Eye Of The Storm (15)
(Fred Schepisi, 2011, Aus) Charlotte Rampling, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis. 119 mins
The imminent death of Rampling's matriarch throws an aristocratic family's dysfunction into relief in this Aussie drama, whose overstuffed story is redeemed by three watchable leads.
Gimme The Loot (15)
(Adam Leon, 2012, Us) Tashiana Washington,...

The eponymous Patrick White novel of which The Eye of the Storm is based upon, won the Nobel Prize in 1973, and has since been considered ‘unfilmable’. However such a myth has been dispelled somewhat, as Fred Schepisi’s first feature for close to a decade makes for a delectable visual experience, enhanced by a provocative score and a trio of immense lead performances. Though with the actors on board and director at the helm, you can’t help but feel that this remains slightly unsatisfying.
We enter in to the final weeks of the life of wealthy Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling), as the influential and affluent mother of two is on her death bed, waiting impatiently for her children Basil (Geoffrey Rush) and Dorothy (Judy Davis) to arrive. Having dictated much of her offspring’s lives, this ageing socialite is now dictating her very own death, alienating her children one final time before passing.

Iron Man 3 | The Look Of Love | Bernie | Scarecrow | In The Fog | The Lords Of Salem | The ABCs Of Death | White Elephant | I Love New Year
Iron Man 3 (12A)
(Shane Black, 2013, Us) Robert Downey Jr, Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Rebecca Hall. 130 mins
Fears of post-Avengers superhero blowout fatigue are briskly swept away by Marvel's latest epic, whose snappy, poppy script packs in twists and quips between the bludgeoning (but technically seamless) action. It's Kingsley's Bin Laden-esque Mandarin and Pearce's creepy scientist who are out to de-swagger Tony Stark this time round, but there are surprises in store for everyone.
The Look Of Love (18)
(Michael Winterbottom, 2013, UK) Steve Coogan, Anna Friel, Imogen Poots, Tamsin Egerton. 101 mins
Despite the Soho excess, the retro kitsch, the racy subject matter and the great cast, this biopic of Britain's pornographer-in-chief Paul Raymond somehow never feels like it's telling the full story.

Judy Davis is one of the fiercest film actors around. She talks about the flaws in her new film, feeling let down by Woody Allen, and her distaste over the release of River Phoenix's last movie
Judy Davis sounds vaguely discombobulated when she picks up the phone. The 58-year-old actor is at home in Sydney on a Friday evening. What have I interrupted? "Oh, nothing," she sighs. "I was just tidying." She asks how I am. I tell her I just got up (it's the time difference), and she sighs again and says: "Oh God."
Anyone who knows Davis's work will appreciate the disdain she can bring to a simple exhalation. Withering contempt is her on-screen stock-in-trade; her repertoire for expressing it includes an array of tics and twitches, a drop-dead stare and a temper seen to blistering effect in some of her films for Woody Allen, including Husbands and Wives and Deconstructing Harry.

Juliette Binoche (Certified Copy) and Clive Owen (Closer) have signed on to co-star in Words and Pictures.
The duo, who have both carved interesting careers for themselves, will take the lead roles in director Fred Schepisi’s follow-up to The Eye of the Storm, which boasts a script penned by Message in a Bottle writer Gerald Dipego.
Words and Pictures (title change, please) centers on a charismatic English teacher (Owen) who creates an improbable relationship with and an intensely private art teacher (Binoche), only to complicate matters by falling in love with one another.
Production on Words and Pictures is due to start early next year in Rhode Island. So, assuming all goes according to plan and it proves to be more engaging than its elementary plot suggests, expect to see this one at film festivals around the world in 2014.

Veteran filmmaker Fred Schepisi is set to direct romantic drama Words and Pictures, starring Clive Owen and Juliette Binoche.
It will mark the 72 year-old director's first feature film since 2011 Australian drama The Eye of the Storm, which was nominated for three Aacta Awards. In October, he also signed on to direct Australian film The Drowner although it appears that Words and Pictures, which is due to shoot from March 2013, will take precedence.
Words and Pictures is set in a New England prep school where a charismatic English teacher (Owen) and an intensely private art teacher (Binoche) form an improbable relationship. The film is being produced by Curtis Burch and his company, Latitude Productions, with Gary Cogill (Lascaux Films), and screenwriter Gerald Dipego.

Man, talk about a movie title that is going to be a pain to Google. Fred Schepisi ("Roxanne," "Mr. Baseball," "The Eye Of The Storm") is lining up his next movie, the blandly titled "Word And Pictures," but luckily his two leads are much livelier. The always awesome Juliette Binoche and the suave Clive Owen are set to star in the film, penned by Gerald Dipego (“Phenomenon,” “Message In a Bottle”). The story takes place at an elite, insular New England prep school where a charismatic English teacher (Owen) and an intensely private art teacher (Binoche) create an improbable relationship, then proceed to complicate their lives with romance. Guys, get it? Words And Pictures. Okay, the premise sounds pretty generic, but in the hands of these actors we'll definitely be willing to see what they make of it. Production on the movie will begin in March, and we're likely to...

Juliette Binoche and Clive Owen have boarded Fred Schepisi's "Words and Pictures," a romantic drama written by Gerald Dipego. The film will be produced by Curtis Burch's Latitude Productions in association with Gary Cogill of Lascaux Films. The story centers on a charismatic English teacher (Owen) at an insular New England prep school and an intensely private art teacher (Binoche). The pair form an unlikley relationship that complicates their lives. Burch notes, "it is an enchanting love story colored with a sophisticated humor and would be ideal for Fred Schepisi to direct. It was with Fred’s commitment that we were able to attract Clive and Juliette, who are a perfect fit to create the chemistry between the two leads at the heart of the story." Schepisi's latest was "The Eye of The Storm," starring Geoffrey Rush; the Australian director is best-known most for his earlier films "Roxanne,...
