One thing is clear from a quick scroll through a cable TV guide or paying attention to the featured show commercials—the scarcity of family dramas.
Once that point is brought up, it's hard not to wonder what that says about our culture and society as a whole.
There was a time when families sat down and watched TV together.
Some of my fondest memories include watching Friday Night Lights and Gilmore Girls with my parents.
However, nowadays, the idea is becoming a foreign concept if the kids are under 18 or at least not teenagers.
There are many motives behind the switch to crime-focused content, whether true or procedural, hospital dramas, comedies, and series full of mature content.
And we are here to shed some light on the reasons for the change!

America’s Got Talent will be back on NBC this summer, and we can’t wait to see the impressive performers who make their way to the competition.
On Monday, the network confirmed that the highly anticipated 19th season will debut on Tuesday, May 28, at 8/7c.
Once again, Simon Cowell will lead the search for the next wave of performers alongside returning judges Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, and Sofia Vergara.
Terry Crews will continue as host, and NBC promises we’ll see some of the “wildest acts” ever to appear on the show.
There will likely be a hiatus after the auditions conclude due to NBC’s commitment to airing the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The good news is that the network has already revealed when we can expect the live shows to get underway.

NBC is setting up another reality summer.
The network has unveiled premiere dates for its summer slate including America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior, Password, The Wall and Weakest Link.
It’s much the same look as last year, although without the likes of Hot Wheels: Ultimate Challenge, Dick Wolf’s LA Fire and Rescue and Jimmy Fallon’s That’s My Jam.
Deadline understands that Hot Wheels, which comes from Endemol Shine North America, Workerbee TV and Mattel Television, and docuseries LA Fire and Rescue, have both been canceled. The latter premiered its first season on May 30, 2023 and the former premiered on June 21, 2023.
In terms of That’s My Jam, Deadline revealed that production had been paused in February, understood to be for celebrity scheduling reasons.
New episodes of Weakest Link, essentially season four of the revived series, will kick off the slate on Tuesday April 2 at 9pm, an hour earlier than last year,...

Plenty of haunted, Halloween and holiday options will crop up on Netflix in the month of October. The harvest doesn’t seem too lean despite the almost five-month writers strike that viewers are sure to feel next year, but at least the WGA and AMPTP have reached a deal, and hopefully, SAG-AFTRA is not too far behind. Luckily, Halloween and fall have a classic canon of films and TV shows that stretches back decades, and some of those staple watches will be available through Netflix throughout the month.

There are a few standout new releases on Netflix in October, but it’s a rather quiet month on the world’s most popular streaming service otherwise!
Highlights this month include a brand-new series from Spook Master Mike Flanagan. The Fall of the House of Usher is a gothic tale loosely based on the short story of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe, and tells the story of two extremely unpleasant siblings whose family dynasty ends up going to hell in a handbasket. Before you ask: yes, Rahul Kohli is in it. That’s all that a lot of people need to know here (we’re people).
Elsewhere, Netflix is dropping a few interesting-looking docuseries, including one on football legend David Beckham. It promises to be an “intimate portrait” of Beckham, and the filmmakers were apparently granted unprecedented access to the sportsman and his family while making it.

It’s big news then when Netflix isn’t No. 1 and a competitor occupies the top two spots, which is the case for the week of Sept. 18-24, with Disney+ sitting atop the charts.
“Elemental,” the feature-length theatrical release from Pixar, rises to the top spot this week, up from second a week ago. Meanwhile, “Ahsoka,” the latest Disney+ original “Star Wars” series, continues to be a major hit, sitting in second place this week. These big wins are proof that Disney’s well-established brands still bring in loads of viewers.
The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most-watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households drawn from over 25 million connected TVs, balanced to the U.S. Census.

Paramount’s decision to air reruns of the biggest show on cable, “Yellowstone,” amid Hollywood’s double strike on broadcast TV this fall is already paying off.
The five-year-old “Yellowstone” rerun of the series premiere is the most-watched linear program of the week, according to the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for Sept. 11-17. This was the first time that the hit show, which normally airs on cable on the Paramount Network, aired on CBS. With many other shows across cable and broadcast either delayed or postponed, we’ll see if “Yellowstone” can continue to dominate Sunday nights throughout the fall — even in reruns.

Vance Walker finally claimed victory as the next “American Ninja Warrior” during Monday’s Season 15 finale, but the journey to winning certainly caused him a fair amount of grief.
After hitting a buzzer during Stage 3 of the NBC competition show’s Las Vegas finals, Walker, along with eight other remaining contestants, went head-to-head to climb the infamous Mt. Midoriyama 75-foot rope climb. While Walker finished his climb with the best performance so far with 3.25 seconds to spare in the 30-second challenge, the 18-year-old finalist had to wait to claim victory until seeing if Caleb Bergstrom and Rj Roman beat his time.
“Waiting to see if I’d won the million dollars was the most terrifying experience in my life,” Walker told TheWrap during a Tuesday morning interview. “I’m already nervous when I’m on the course, but when you’ve done what you needed to do, and it’s...

One second made all the difference during the nail-biting season finale of American Ninja Warrior season 15. With a record-breaking eight qualifying for Stage 4, history was made as the “Great Eight” made the arduous 75-foot rope climb of Mt. Midoriyama. In the end, Vance Walker conquered the tower in an incredible 26:75 seconds, just enough to pass veteran ninja Daniel Gil’s time of 27:99. The 18-year-old joins Isaac Caldiero and Drew Drechsel as the only finalists to ever be awarded the million-dollar prize. More than any amount of money or trophy, Walker takes pride in seeing others inspired by his story. “Walker Texas Ninja” was told at one point he would never walk without assistance, let alone play sports. He was diagnosed at 18 months old with a form of Cerebral Palsy called spastic diplegia in his legs, which required him to wear leg braces. Through sure will, determination, and a never-give-up attitude,...

One reason Netflix has grown into the global leader in streaming is that it has developed content that can play almost anywhere. That latest example is “Who is Erin Carter?,” an English-language action series that unravels the mystery of a British teacher living in Spain who takes down some robbers with the skill of a trained secret agent.
Is she Interpol, Kgb, or CIA? Even with a cast of relative unknowns, the globe-trotting action captivated viewers and propelled “Erin Carter” to the top spot in this week’s Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report for August 28 to September 3. “American Ninja Warrior” contestant Taylor Greene is bringing her A game to the first stage of the finals in Las Vegas, ready to build on her winning streak as the first female to hit the buzzer this season.
In an exclusive clip of Monday’s episode shared with TheWrap, the 15-year-old from Broomfield, Colorado, prepares for the elaborate challenge ahead of her, hoping to set a brand new record.
“I’m definitely a little nervous, but I would say I’m more excited because I feel like I’ve already proven myself and my abilities,” Greene said in the clip. “I’m absolutely ready to become the young women to ever hit a Stage 1 buzzer.”
As Greene gets ready to take the stage, her friends and family line the crowd cheering her on, including 2023 “American Ninja Warrior” reigning women’s champion Katie Bone, who could be dethroned by Greene.

Bob Barker, who died today at 99, was the Patron Saint of Sick Days.
To hear Barker’s name is to be immediately transported.
Maybe you aren’t taken any further than the boxy TV in your living room — the one that was normally off-limits during daytime hours, but which became an inanimate physician and endlessly enabling babysitter whenever your body’s temperature hit 100.
For me, Bob Barker’s name is the magical wardrobe that takes me to every student lounge at every college my parents ever taught at, where I would take a frayed, foamy chair that was normally reserved for undergrads and park myself for hours waiting for my fever to break. Students would peek in, see that a plausibly ill kid was monopolizing the TV, complain that this was the time they normally watched their favorite soap operas and leave. Unless what was on was The Price Is Right,...

Netflix originals regularly take the top spots in the Wrap Report, as they did for the week of Aug. 14-20 once again. But the streamer’s sixth entry in the week’s chart of the most-viewed streaming programs that’s particularly notable: Season 1 of “Suits,” which originally aired on USA 12 years ago, is once again among the top 10 streaming programs.
The legal drama made the charts for four consecutive weeks earlier this summer, and its return to the top 10 demonstrates its lasting attraction among audiences since Netflix added the series in June. Netflix has found new audiences for the series by tapping its recommendation engines to reach viewers of the “Harry & Meghan” documentary as well as leaning into the popular drama and crime genres.
