A lovely feelgood film
durham10013 December 2021
With excellent acting throughout. Great music and a warm and fuzzy sense of humour. No idea why people keep referring to Julie Bowen as being the "aunt" - how wrong can you be? If you want to block out the world and all its current angst curl up and watch this - it's the prefect antedote.

Fun little romp thru the late 90's
braincandle-14 December 2021
Great flick about making new friends, discovering new music, and how cool record stores used to be! Asked my wife what she thought at the end and she said "bittersweet" and I couldn't agree more. Some happy, some sad, all mixed in to one fun movie. The inner-workings of a mixed tape all flushed out - with Nick Thune as the standout imo as the gruff record store owner that takes the main character under his wing to share the love of music and mixtapes.

Better than expected

The acting, characters, small things that made me laugh and smile. It just got something. It got a nice, entertaining flow to it.

So overall better than what I had expected.

Although nothing oscar worthy or very original, did enjoy this & even laughed a time or two.

It was cast & acted ok,overall storyline & cinematography decent.

Maybe it was geared more towards teens, but something a family could watch together.

A weekend popcorn flix, worth checking out!

It's fine
brianjohnson-2004316 December 2021
I'd give this a 6 if it was a theatrical release. But for a streaming film I give it a 7 which I feel is slightly above average.

As a person who was about the same age of the main character at the same year in time it was fun to see, even if most of the rest didn't really mimic my life. Perhaps I would have been more critical if it wasn't so suited for someone of my age. But I also was never into punk rock and never lost my parents or was raised by a non-biological parent. So some people could relate more to those components.

It seems like a good film to put on with a family with people of many ages. And it's nice to have movies like that available on Netflix.

Surprisingly heartflet

Once you put aside its Disney-esque sappiness and saccharine on its surface, Mixtape will serve you with a feel-good family drama. It's a sweet tale not only about a coming-of-age but also about bonding and eventually about coping with the bleakness of the past.

Hard warming and delightful
atlastu24 December 2021
I had no idea about this film but i liked its idea when i read its story, and as i started watching it, i was feeling really entertained with a big smile on my face until the end credits. The film has a lot of cool elements, it takes place in the late 90s, so all those from that era will feel nostalgic, also the soundtrack is a big part of the film, with classics by the Kinks, The Stooges, Cheap Trick and many more. The cast are really great, (with the lead young talented actress Gemma Brooke Allen at the helm), and each character is well-written and meaningful. The film focuses on the importance of friendship, family and being your own self while listening to awesome music. Highly recommended.

Cheesy ending lol but a sweet story
niseynisey24 December 2021
A sweet story about grief and trying to live life without those we cared so much for. The ending was a bit too cheesy and unrealistic for me, so I took off a star. The subject matter was easily digestible for a younger audience and wasn't too heavy even though the subject is a hefty task.

i cannot find a reason to not give it a ten stars...
ops-525355 December 2021
So whatever you might think, i have decided, and thats because im a grumpy old man with an ironic wit and have experienced a lot in a lifetime.and whenever i come over a rare movie fick like this i grab it and cram it into my breast and starts crying out loud, this was the missing link in my life!!! So if you love to hug trees, if you love to hug your nostagic lp records or the ultra extended version of a maxi-single, or you like to decorate your room with audiocassette-tape or cd's that you burned when young and now use as a window draper instead of letting your kids burn the cd, because you told them that you did so when you where young...

its a film filled with love love love, its a song filled with hope hope hope, and a story that stays on a high flux velocity even in the most sad and melanconic moments, and just makes you want that time machine to race back into the nostalgia of the 80's and 1990's...

its an extremely well made film, the gadgets, the props, the decorating, and outfit of the staging and dress code are complete and utterly like opening that door to the past. There are tears, but most of all smiles, not smirky one, its the wholeheartedly big adventorous smile the only young adolescents and teenagers can make like when peeling of the 7 layers of wrapping paper just to find the greatest wish of all unfold. The casting crew should get an award for their choice of actors. Gemma brooke allen is the new nova in the sky, and even though im a man i can feel the tingeling feeling in the belly button unwrapping along with her...

well if you wanna cheer up and love the music of the forementioned era the watch mixtape, a film that will bring nostalgia, a very nice tool to stress down from the race of social media and deadly great expectations in your life. Its not oscar worthy, but a marvel for you and you and me.

Mixtape to make you feel better
czarnykwadrat6 December 2021
"Mixtape" (2021) is a really friendly and cosy production to watch with the kids, younger siblings or friends. Perfect for long winter evenings with a cup of hot tea! The film explores topics such as family bonds, passion, friendship and growing up.

Although the film doesn't show any plot nuances, it's still a really decent feel good story. You get what you expect from this type of film.

It's worth appreciating the young cast of the film, who did a great job portraying really likable 90's kids : )

Be aware prop a gander
cmmnaus16 December 2021
This movie takes place in 1999 in the lead up to Y2K. It is supposed to be nostalgic for those at the end of the baby boom while connecting them to tween grand kids. In the first 15 minutes of this movie, the Grand mother suggests that her tween grand daughter will be scheduled for a "flew" shh out. Her best friend neighbor lists having her full schedule of you know what as a benefit. FYI all who are reading this, in 1999 I was a 30 something. I can assure you that NO child ren in my social circles got flew shh otts. Certain schedules were not major topics of conversation. This is revisionist history masquerading as some kind of woke up ness that never was in that time of relative innocence. Don't forget to do your homework!! My O card it is.

Watched this feel-good movie with my husband and kids, relaxing, amusing, amazing music, Julie Bowen as grandma maybe in 20 years from now, Nick Thune with some great comedy lines, the trio of teenagers a breath of fresh air.

Loved it!

Cute, quirky coming of age tale with some nostalgia
halomaniac8815 December 2021
This is a really cute movie. A young girl goes on a journey of discovery and on the way finds new friends and herself.

Beverly is in Junior high, she lives with her grandmother. Her parents were punk rockers who unfortunately died in an accident when Bev was just a baby. She doesn't know who she is or who her parents were. A part of her always questions herself, would my mother have liked me? At the beginning of the film, Bev doesn't really know who she is.

One day she stumbles upon a mix tape that her parents made of some obscure 80s bands. She sees it as a sign from her parents. She thinks they are sending her a message. This story took place in the 90s therefore no YouTube or Spotify. She enlists the help of her friends who go on a musical journey, going to record stores and concerts, playing the guitar, trying to identify with her parents through music.

At the end, Bev realized that she is who she is, she doesn't need to be like her mother, but along the way she made some great friends.

Ugh
davebuttomer10 December 2021
Nothing realistic about this film. Nothing. Even if the film contained a live performance from the Great Joan Jett, this 12 year old audience targeted film would still fail. Misses the mark on so many levels,. Cute idea, so props for that. Stick to High Fidelity for a mature and honest look at music. If seeking a film about family, perhaps watch On Golden Pond.

Awful in every sense of the word
cramercaitlin17 December 2021
I had a very long day and just wanted to watch a nice movie that I didn't have to think too hard about. It's not hard to think about but that is the only redeeming thing i can say about this movie. I hated the acting (I know they're children but it felt so unbelievably forced). All of the dialogue was written like a "motivational" Pinterest post. The main girls entire personality resided it the fact that she was an orphan and wanted to know EVERYTHING about her dead parents. I get it, being an orphan is not easy but it got to the point where I was rolling my eyes whenever she said it solely because she talked about it way too much. The main character is a jerk to her friends and for some reason they still want to be friends with her. Overall, I would say skip this movie because it got really frustrating really fast.

cute
SnoopyStyle8 February 2024
It's 1999 Spokane. Beverly Moody (Gemma Brooke Allen) is an orphan living with her grandmother Gail (Julie Bowen). She finds her parents' mixtape and accidentally breaks it. She decides to find all the songs on the tape hoping for a message from the past. She befriends neighbor Ellen (Audrey Hsieh), angry outsider Nicky (Olga Petsa), and record store owner Anti (Nick Thune).

Gemma gives me Abigail Breslin vibes. This is a cute little coming-of-age movie. I like these girls and their friendships. It's a little odd to have Julie Bowen as the grandmother, but she's going to play that sooner or later. The one part that lost me is Anti taking the girls to the club. No grown man would ever drive three underage girls anywhere unless he's an idiot or worst. Anti doesn't strike me as either. My pitch would be the girls sneaking out and running into him at the club. I was hoping for a bigger revelation about her mother and one of the songs. All in all, this is cute, endearing, and I like the characters.

Cute homage to the 80s and 90s.
lasleym1 February 2023
Biggest distraction for me was the wrong things. Time for example - priority mail boxes didn't come out until 2004. Yellow sweater they put back but then she's wearing in the next scene. The beautiful deciduous rain forest of BC when they are supposed to be in the high plateau of Spokane. Julie Bowen's eyebrows are styled of now rather than the late 90s. Though they did try with the eyeliner. It was distracting but the show was cute. A little too PG meets High Fidelity. The young cast was good, loved the character development with the "weirdos". Not sure how they handled the typical racism of the day assuming all Asian people are the same. And we are trying. I give it an optimistic 7 for trying.

A Feel Good Movie about Finding One Self
The-Sarkologist12 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The funny thing is that I developed a fascination with the idea of mixtapes, and discovered that there was a film about them, which is no doubt why I wanted to watch it. The thing is that I grew up in the 80s, during the era of mix tapes when we would sit in front of the radio waiting for our favourite songs to come of so as to record them. The funny thing is that Hollywood seems to think that mixtapes were shared when in reality we simply kept them for ourselves (with a couple of exceptions - one being that a friend would give them to other friends to get them to listen to different types of music).

Anyway, this film is about a young orphan who lives with her grandmother. He parents died in a car accident and she wants to learn more about them. Well, she finds a mixtape made by them and decides to listen to it, but it gets eaten by the walkman, so she goes on a quest to find all of the songs. During the quest she makes new friends, and also has to fight with her grandmother who is scared of losing her in the same way that she lost her daughter, and the grubby world of pub rock in which her parents were involved.

It's basically one of those feel good films. In fact, I have to admit that it was quite enjoyable. Sure, being the age I am I probably relate more to the parents, who we never actually meet, with the exception of their voices on the tape. Actually, this is one of the good things about the film, namely that we never get to meet the parents - there are no flashbacks, so all we know about them is what the hero of the piece are told, so of course we are left guessing, in the same way that she is left guessing, as to who they are and what actually happened.

Yeah, it was fun, and it certainly was a feel good film. Oh, and it also had a decent amount of music, which you would certainly expect from a film about a mixtape.

Great Story and great songs.
sionnach-liath4 December 2021
I enjoyed this film. It has a feel good quality without being full of schmaltzy. The three girls are great charters. They come across as real with the normal ambitions of young teens. Down ti earth and fun with enough pathos to make the happiness real.

Just too sloppy n unbelievable
dlmoncy23 December 2021
I love a feel good pic, and I'm there to happily manipulated, that's why I choose this movie! But within the first 20 minutes, there are scene after scene that just push the suspension of disbelief beyond logic. Let's start with that piece of bacon that she's eating as if it's a hoagie for multiple shots. This bacon is magic and doesn't diminish as she gives some to a dog, in the most unrealistic way, if you have ever meet a dog! Meanwhile the family across the street is super busy scraping nonexistent snow and ice from a perfectly fine car (and there is green grass n foliage everywhere). At this point I'm wondering who directed this?! Are you not at all interested in reality or your audiences intelligence? Now we get to the big moment- the mix tape. She finds it, listens but then it breaks?! Irrevocably? Well no. Actually tapes are pretty easy to fix. She could've brought that broken tape into the record guy and most likely he would've been able to splice it right back together for her. I understand that then there wouldn't be a movie, but if the conflict is bogus? Also...all my shots (from the "model minority" stereo typed Asian neighbor). No one was talking that way 20 years ago. Period. And why are they putting a black line through the songs they have found, this is one of the few things she has from her parents, now she's crossing out their handwriting?! I don't buy it. Just bad directing. Had it been written with just a little more care it wouldn't feel so insulting and lame. The music is really really great though!

Excellent Feel-Good Flick - Amazing Songs, Great Characters, Terrific Comedic One-Liners
rannynm8 December 2021
Mixtape is an excellent feel-good flick! Amazing songs, extraordinary characters, and comedic one-liners make this movie worthwhile. By the end of the film, I wanted to watch it all over again.

Mixtape follows twelve-year-old Beverly (Gemma Brooke Allen) in 1999. She lives with her grandmother Gail (Julie Bowen) after her parents died in a car crash. One day, Beverly finds a mixtape from her parents and goes on a journey to find out more about them and about herself. She is accompanied by her friends Nicky (Olga Petsa), Ellen (Audrey Hsieh) and Anti (Nick Thune).

This film is incredible. It radiates fun vibes that young audiences need today. The comedy is perfectly balanced to give the movie a lighthearted feel, but doesn't distract from Beverly's quest to find out more about her family. The flick really does resemble life in the 90s, with phrases, taunts and wardrobe that are appropriate to the era. The characters are so loveable. Anti is hilarious with his dry humor which compliments Beverly's eccentric personality. Nicky, Ellen and Beverly make a perfect and unlikely trio. They are all funny, work great together as a team, and are strong together - just as strong as they are individually. The writers fit so many relationships and themes into this movie - friendship, family and finding yourself. It's incredible how they focus on so many topics without jumbling them and making a huge mess. Audiences need a film like Mixtape because it's a breath of fresh air. It's easy to get exhausted from heavily dramatic movies and Mixtape is the perfect comfort movie.

There are several themes in this movie. Beverly learns to find confidence in herself plus she finds amazing friends. She also learns to live life to the fullest, seeing it through new lenses and getting out of her comfort zone.

I give Mixtape 5 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 16. It begins streaming on Netflix December 3, 2021. By Heather S., KIDS FIRST!

Too Awful for words
makoz3 January 2022
Nobody should force their family, kids, cats or dogs to sit through this heap of a mess.

It's easily one of the top 10 worst movies ever made.

Definitely the worst I've ever seen on Netflix.

The plot is so dumb and orchestrated so poorly that I may have brain damage.

This movie should have been called "My Idiot Grand daughter" and it would have made a lot more sense.

It's 10 out of 10 !!
nikolash-582669 December 2021
Whatever you read here won't include spoilers as this is not the suspense kind of movie to hold you on edge with the murderer, weapon and room to be revealed at the end!

It's a feel-good story from start to end, heart-warming, filled with lively conversations, comedic lines, fun and awesome 80s-90s songs that make us nostalgic of that time.

Julie Bowen and Nick Thune bring the experience & charm but the revelation of the film are the 3 young actresses, Gemma Brooke Allen (Beverley), Olga Petsa (Nicky) and Audrey Hsieh (Ellen) who performed to perfection their characters and in-film evolution, showing us how easy it really is for teenagers to create friendships and how resourceful they can be in their search for answers or even forming solidarity against bullying.

All was well balanced and the film offers a ray of optimism for our youths.

Highly recommended for all ages and not just teenagers.

A Melodic Journey of Discovery
sufyaanrashid9523 January 2024
Plot: "Mixtape" follows the story of 12-year-old Sarah, who discovers a broken mixtape that once belonged to her late mother, a woman she never had the chance to know. Determined to unravel the mystery of her mother's life and personality through the eclectic and obscure songs on the tape, Sarah embarks on a heartfelt quest to find each track. In doing so, she not only delves into her mother's past but also finds herself on a transformative journey of self-discovery and understanding, leading to a poignant reconciliation with her grandmother, who has raised her with love and care.

Review: "Mixtape" is a touching and resonant exploration of love, loss, and the enduring power of music to connect generations. The film's premise is both heartwarming and compelling, as Sarah's mission to piece together her mother's musical legacy becomes a catalyst for her own emotional growth and healing. The performances, especially by the young lead, are genuine and moving, effectively conveying the emotional weight of the story. The film's soundtrack plays a central role, offering a captivating and diverse selection of songs that enrich the narrative and evoke a sense of nostalgia. "Mixtape" is a poignant and uplifting cinematic experience that beautifully captures the universal themes of family, identity, and the profound impact of music on our lives. I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a heartfelt and melodious journey of discovery.
