You have to see the series before the film, but then it's great
siderite12 January 2022
I can't recommend enough to watch Netflix's Hilda series! It's charming, intelligent, engaging, entertaining and positive, fit for any age category. Hilda and the Mountain King is not really a separate film, but a continuation of the two seasons of the show, so watching it without watching the series doesn't make a lot of sense.

Hilda is again put in a situation where established custom falls short and she has to figure out how to get to the truth and solve the problem, this time one that would affect everybody in Trollberg. It was a bit disappointing that the trigger to the entire film, the swap, was not actually explained. But other than that, the film was just as good as the series and probably just a rework of whatever they had done for season 3.

It's so sad that Netflix's strategy to get more viewers and money does not extend to caring for them once they are in. The system, as is, motivates them to make a lot of shows, but not to continue them. If a viewer felt for it and subscribed, that's great, it doesn't bring more money to continue the show that got them there. And that is probably what is happening with Hilda, too. I really really want to see the show continue, but at this rate, you should probably consider this film as a "wrap up".

I could not have asked for a better conclusion.
Erfangholiz30 December 2021
Definitely my animated film of the year, it paid off everything the show had set up and showed me that the writer knew exactly what they were doing from the very start.

I'm more than happy if this is the conclusion of this series.

INCREDIBLE!
seansohr30 December 2021
I just watched "Hilda and the Mountain King" twice, and it was INCREDIBLE. Everything I could have asked for and then some.

From the breathtaking opening sequence to the art direction to the emotional impact to the jokes to the resolution....all just absolutely amazing. I'd be lying if I said that I didn't cry a little.

At the beginning of the month, I speculated that this would be the saving grace of 2021 for me, and it most definitely was.

Not only did it live up to all of my expectations, but it EXCEEDED them. At times, it almost felt like an apology for some of season 2's shortcomings.

If I only had one small complaint, it'd be the absence of the Great Raven once again. I discussed this in my review of season 2 last year, but again, I'm sort of bummed that the Raven didn't show up here either. He could have taken the role of the Lost Clan pigeon in the search for Hilda.

Just a little nitpick, though. Hopefully, we'll see the Raven or the Marra at least once in season 3, even just a cameo....right? Right?

A fantastic film that caps off the ark beautifully.
pfne30 December 2021
The film is a sequel to the 2 seasons of Netflix show Hilda.

The 2 seasons together are some of the absolute best programs Netflix has ever produced. They're touching, emotional, funny, fantastical and real and are absolutely required viewing for everyone.

The film continues the show and brings charm, warmth, emotion and humour in spades. The story caps of the seasons in a way that is perfect when seen as a whole.

The only flaws I can see with this film is the fact it relies on people seeing the preceding show. Other than that, the voice work, the animation, the music, the story line etc. It's all absolutely fantastic.

such a cute and feel-good movie, good conclusion for a great series
akivabsinger30 December 2021
First of all the original show was a masterpiece, judt perfect in everybway i could think of and truly made me feel good about life whenever i turned it on. Imo it was up there with the best animation shows like gravity falls and over the garden wall.

This movie was a great follow up and conclusion but not as good as the show, it is still really great and nice and completely worth a watch though.

When i found out this will be the end of Hilda i was very sad cuz it was honestly just quality content:,(

I watched this movie with a friend of mine and we really liked it, as always the art and music were FANTASTIC and the story was just totally awesome and heartwarming.

I must admit that me and my friend pretty much predicted everything in the movie but both of us are 15 so i dont think of it much and even with the movie being predictable, we both still really enjoyed it.

Just a really sweet movie thats a great ending for an amazing series:) i really loved this

so yeah, this was a very good movie and im very happy i got to watch it. Me and my friend were looking forward to this since it was first announced and it didn't let us down, totally recommend!

A charming continuation that didn't quite engage me
johnsebastiantan13 January 2022
I love the Hilda series. To me, it always felt like a mix of the creativity from Adventure Time and a tinge of eeriness from Gravity Falls. But I can admit the quality of episodes does vary, and while some are wildly imaginative, others can come off as tame and conventional.

Unfortunately, the movie follows the latter description, and whilst it does have moments of whimsical fun, the overarching story plays out as expected and never quite captures the heights of mystery of some of the best episodes in the series. Still definitely worth a watch if you are a fan of Hilda.

And yes, the animation and sound design is as great as ever!

The Perfect Excuse to Watch Hilda
RaymanHortse3 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
You want an excuse to watch Hilda? Now you finally have one, so go watch it.

Ok, time to give my honest review of this. When they announced that the next part of Hilda series was going to be a Movie i almost cried of emtion and it was worth to do. It is a beautiful story that continued the clifhanger of Season 2 with Hilda converted to a Troll; you can see her fear of how she looks and how her life is changed after that, being a perfect paralel with Hilda's mother; you can also see her complete meltdown and fear to have her away in what they think is a hostile group. Everyone in this mvoie has a reason to be there and try to help in it's way... ones better than others. They respected the voices, the animation and the continuity of the series, thing that is always good specially on a long event like this one.

About that of ones being better is what i want to talk about, some things are very left behind like why no one told Hilda about the Mountain King and the reason of why he was there, she literally asked about it, but the exchanged mother could have told Hilda that he was there way earlier. Ok the movie needs a conflict but could have been told in another way. Also i dislike the captain of the guards, he honestly is a character i disliked in every single second on screen even after he redeemed, that included season 2 completely.

We still have one more season to come, telling us a few more stories about Hilda and her friends, this is a good and not very long adventure to enjoy.

A magnificent movie that's a continuation of the series!
samog-9828918 August 2022
I enjoyed this film so much! Bella Ramsey is such a great actress in both the series and this movie (I look forward to seeing what she'll do next as Ellie in HBO's The Last of Us TV series alongside Her Game of Thrones co-star Pedro Pascal). I'm also very excited to see the conclusion of the third and final season of Hilda which will be coming to Netflix in the distant future! Overall this is a Netflix film that works and that's Y I'm giving this movie a 7/10 I highly recommend this for not just the kids but the whole family as well! Hope you enjoy it!!! ;-)

Everything I could have hoped for
maxdon-0432230 December 2021
This movie continues the story of the Netflix show Hilda, so it is a must watch for anybody who like the shows season 1 and 2, but the show must be seen by anybody who wants to watch this movie.

This movie turned out to be everything that I could have hoped for, it beautifully concluded an ark that had silently started in the background of season 1 and had been openly building all through out season 2.

The Story: As mentioned above, this movie is the third act of a much longer overarching story of the conflict between the trolls and the humans. I can't say anything more without spoiling it.

The Characters: They are just as well done as in the series, maybe even better, as in this movie every character that has any relevance to the story has a clear motivation and don't act dumb, another thing to note is that a character that I found annoying in season 2 isn't annoying in this movie.

The Animation The animation is everything that I expected and more, the movie mostly stays on the same amazing level as the rest of the series but it has moments through out that are of even higher quality! It does not disappoint.

The Flaws: If you forced me to think of a flaw that I notice while watching, it would be this: about 7/8 of the way through the movie a charter types on a keyboard and the finger strokes don't match the keyboard, that is the thing that bugged me as soon as I saw it. When I rewatch the movie maybe I will notice something else, but at the moment that is the only thing that stands out to me.

Séries slightly better, but ok for an ending
dontakeitpersonal24 January 2022
A bit predictable for my taste, from dialogue to storyline. But maybe I've just gotten too used to it by now? I liked the series a bit better because it still had an edge for me. But all and all a good ending to the story. Would have loved to see A bit more action from Frieda and her new powers, but then again it's not an agressive ending with war and big fights.

Touching and beautiful
bm23019921 August 2022
This film was a joy to watch. It was meaningful and sweet just like the Hilda series. I love how much they stuck to the series and all the little easter eggs they gave us. A really good film for kids and adults, beautifully animated and excellently told.

Does what it sets out to
sarcasm_for_free1 January 2022
With the standard animation from the cartoon series and not exactly an epic feel until the very end, this feels more like an extended episode of the show than a big major event movie.

That's alright though, because there's nothing wrong with the TV series and any attempt to swerve from the main plot would probably just alienate regular viewers whilst unlikely to attract new ones.

In other words: watch everything up to the point of the end of S2, or you'll be as lost as a transformed Hilda is in the troll underground.

As for the quality of the product under review, it's pretty much as you'd expect. All the regulars are here, though most of the focus is on Hilda and her mother as they cope with their new life situations and attempt to find each other.

There's a few noticeable lags in the story (and an annoying whiny new baby character to tolerate), but for the most part it'll keep you interested until the emotional conclusion, which to be honest could've functioned as a series finale. Apparently they're making some more though, so don't fret.

I must say though, that kidnapping and forcibly adopting a child are quite harsh actions, yet no-one seems to mind by the end. If you ask me, Hilda's new troll 'mama' is lucky not to get herself arrested. Providing they can find a cell big enough to hold her, that is... 6/10.

A heartfelt wrap-up to two wonderful seasons!
magiczach1 January 2022
Coming off the previous two seasons, there were very high expectations for the film, and I believe it's safe to say that they met and exceeded them.

The art matches that of the series, with gorgeously blended pastel colors and that warm soft lighting of which the show is known for. It's difficult to go ten minutes through the film without being presented a spectacle or landscape that leaves you in awe. The animation itself has been given noticeable refinements since the series, particularly in its character movement and speech animation. It's a subtle, but noticed step forwards.

Accompanying the art and animation is, like the series before it, a fantastic soundtrack. While it may have been more restricted this time, when it does make an appearance, it completely clicks with the aesthetic of the show and the plot in an amazing combination.

The film pushes our two main characters, Hilda and her mother Johanna, to their limits. The relationship between them had been growing more tenuous throughout the running of the series, and in the film it gets further attention and development.

Amidst all this, the other sub-plot regarding the threatening buildup of troll activity outside the city gets pulled to the fore within the film, and has its own bittersweet resolution.

Despite tying up the biggest loose ends from the previous two seasons, and the film being based off the final book installment of the same name, there is in fact a third and final season coming! It's uncharted territory, it could go anywhere.

"Our (last) adventure, Twig! Where should we go?"

as someone who hasn't watched the series
djurrepower1 January 2022
I stumbled upon this movie while scrolling through netflix. Didn't know it was related to a series. But it became pretty clear that I was missing some background information. Not so much so, that I couldn't follow the story. So in the end, I quite enjoyed the film. Maybe if I knew the series I would be a little more invested in the whole worldbuiling and such. But it's not hard to see that this film is made with a lot of love and hard work. All in all, it was decent. But personally I wasn't super impressed.

6/10: ye sure its good.

An Adventurous and Mystical Masterpiece
tyzilla-0245030 December 2021
Hilda And The Mountain King Based on The Graphic Novel and the Netflix Series Bring a Beautiful and spectacular adventure following the events of Season 2s Conclusion. I do recommend you watch the show first before watching this film because alot of moments in movie will hit harder than if someone had not watched the show before. This Movie Mainly focuses on Hilda and her new body of being a troll. The Movie goes deep into the lore relating to the trolls and their history with the town. Without going into spoilers the film offers amazing visual set pieces that are worthy of framing up on a wall which makes Hilda so Special from alot of Animated Shows. In Conclusion this is a must watch for a fan of the Series or Novels and offers a spectical that can only come from a show like this.

Wonderfully On Brand, But it Helps To See the Series First!
icocleric19 January 2022
Hilda is a wonderful and pure Netflix series that I enjoy a lot. The film throws you right into the deep end, and I think it's really beneficial to have seen the series first.

However the story is wonderfully on brand, it had a really great plot, and it really benefits from having the full length of the film. I really love the fantasy elements to this series, and honestly it's so pure and fun.

It was nice to see some of the characters gain character growth within the film too.

Hilda and the Mountain King Based on The Graphic Novel and the TV series Brings and Is spectacle you can only get out of a show like this.

The Film Follows After the events of Season 2 where Hilda is turned into a troll and must find a way to turn back into a Human. Without going into spoilers the Film goes deep into the Lore regarding the trolls and the city and gives a different perspective of what Trolls do and go through In the show I highly recommend watching the show first before watching this film Because alot of scenes will hit harder for someone who had grown with these characters in conclusion this is a must watch for all fans of the show and will be a mystical spectacle which makes Hilda so Special compared to other animated shows.

I love Hilda!! 💙
dspaincat19 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I love the series, I just started it last week, (finished it yesterday), so today we decided to watch Hilda and the Mountain King!!

The movie was epic, describing the lives of the trolls!

I understand...the mom troll just wanted what's best for her daughter, Baba, to be safe, but she swapped Baba with Hilda.

So Hilda is a troll, Baba is a human!

Follow Hilda as she tries to get back into her human form, (along with learning about the troll culture), and finally bring peace to the humans and trolls!

I found the movie satisfying, so is the show!

So go check out Hilda now!!

You'll enjoy t!

An enjoyable adventure from beginning to end
jedfarcry2234 January 2022
Hilda and The Mountain King was a movie that I was really looking forward to because Hilda is one of my all time favorite animated series and it's definitely one that has had a huge impact on me as a person. From the first frame of the movie, you can definitely tell that they took full advantage of the fact that this is a film. With it being Hilda, it ended up having a lot of heartfelt moments and also had a lot of funny moments. I knew that it was gonna be worth the wait but this movie was so good that I ended up watching it twice on the day it came out and I've rarely rewatched a movie in the same day that I watched something. Sure I've rewatched a movie later on down the road but this was the first time that I rewatched a movie in the span of 24 hours and it is so worth it since there's never a dull moment through the 87 minute runtime.
