It was great....only till the very end.
amanyd-1039621 September 2023
To begin with, I loved the casting for this movie. All three 3 are great fit for their part but Jaideep Ahlawat just shines a bit brighter. The story begins in a mellow, small town, following the same mood but picks up straightaway. Love the mood it sets and the world it tries to create. There's a good amount of thrill, if not absolute mystery, all along the way. The story keeps building and building to the big reveal, the final act, the 'Prestige' ....BUT, the climax just lets you down. Not that it's a failed climax. No, not at all. But you're just left wanting for a more shocking moment after such a long buildup. It is perfectly believable but not what the remaining 2 hours built up to. It lacked a level of shock and awe that was expected. It's a mixed feeling. Would have given the overall film a good 8, but the climax pull it down to a 6. Still a good watch.

Movie is all Japdeep Ahlawat acting
abhishekthecoolguy21 September 2023
Jaideep Ahlawat delivers an exceptional performance, intricately portraying subtle nuances like his character's realization of Maya's (Kareena) true feelings, reflected in his expressions throughout. When Jaideep interacts with the students, it brings a delightful touch of joy. Coupled with a captivating storyline, this movie is an absolute must-watch.

Kareena blends seamlessly into her role, becoming just another face in the crowd, while Vijay's performance leaves a lasting impression. The director ensures there's no excess of songs, which is highly commendable.

This movie is a must-see if you're seeking a compelling storyline combined with powerful acting.

A greatly watchable suspense thriller, albeit ultimately not fully realised
Peter_Young25 September 2023
Now, this is the kind of film I'm sure many people like, and for a reason. Based on Keigo Higashino's novel The Devotion of Suspect X, it is directed by none other than Sujoy Ghosh, a man who sure knows his stuff, especially when it comes to directing mystery films of this sort. The story is well adapted into an Indian setting, and the choice of Kalimpong is very refreshing, providing a nice insight into the local influence of Nepali culture. Technically the film is excellent. The cinematography is very dark and dim, contributing to the atmosphere the director seeks to create. Jaane Jaan benefits from a tight script and solid pacing, and its twists and turns help the narrative. It first gave me some Drishyam (2015) vibes, as it seemed to have a similar plotline of two women dealing with a man intruding their lives and then finding a way to clamber out of the situation with the help of a sophisticated, strategic man who calculates every step and is always a few moves ahead. Sadly, towards the end, it did start to strain credulity, and considering the unusual premise of the story, I wished for an alternative, more satisfying conclusion than the one we ended up getting, which had no justification whatsoever.

Still, the film remained a captivating and engaging watch through and through, enough to make an impact even despite its rather disappointing ending. Above all, it managed to make the characters relatable and even likable, and that's why you might end up wishing for a different outcome. The three stars work well opposite one another to create a nice team. Jaideep Ahlawat infuses his part with the right amount of stoic awkwardness to successfully create a rather shady and questionable man. Film after film, Vijay Varma appears to make a name for himself as a solid actor who can always be counted on to deliver the goods. He is excellent. It's been a while since I saw Kareena do something as worthy as this film. I even felt sorry she didn't use the extraordinary opportunities available to actresses in India to promote her artistic career. And I'm so happy she picked this film. Here, she looks very much a real person - raw and authentic, and never a star. She intelligently uses her sex appeal to a quiet, more implicit effect, and even though she appears a little indifferent and conscious of the situation in some scenes, she puts in an impressive turn overall. I hope she keeps doing similar projects. Very nice film, overall.

An arrow in the sky
prabhnanak22 September 2023
I read the book "Devotion of Suspect X" before I watched the movie. The book truly was unputdownable with an ending which stayed with me for days.

Unfortunately, the movie doesn't live up to the book at all, I was expecting something crafty from Ghosh but it was as if he tried to fit in everything from the book in the movie. There were a lot more characters in the book like Yakuwo and Kudo which were as it seems amalgamated in Vijay Verma's character (Karan Anand).

The ending felt rushed with no solid explanation and Ghosh gave a new angle of "first love".

Performances were stellar and solid with Jaideep Ahlawat being the brightest star. He was so well suited for the role of the teacher and sank his teeth into the role with such ease.

Kareena did justice to her role but I felt she was trapped by the script. The scene in the beginning was a testimony to her acting abilities especially when it came to her being vulnerable and fierce at the same time. I wish Ghosh could have explored her guilt a little better.

Vijay was as usual excellent.

Disappointing climax!
SoumikBanerjee199622 September 2023
It is a prime example of a tastefully decorated ship smoothly covering all its due course, only to sink helplessly right before penetrating the premises of the destined harbour. It is a Story that did everything right and ticked every box only to underwhelm at the onset of its climactic segment!

Finales are highly critical for any film, let alone for a murder mystery feature because it is that particular juncture where threads get loose, revelations crop up on the surface, and even a single mistake could jeopardise the whole situation. I am afraid that was exactly what transpired in this case!

Mr. Ghosh, what the heck happened to you? This is the same person who made films like Kahaani, Badla, Bob Biswas, some of my absolute favourites. Where was that Sujoy Ghosh I knew and adored? I expected much better from him.

P. S. Regardless of the writing and its drawbacks, the performances were impressive. Bebo, Jaideep and Vijay, all three, had done great, as was expected from them.

Climax yet to be released!!
parlovechaudhary-476-89375428 September 2023
This film will be remembered more for the performances delivered by the actors than every other thing combined. All of them were phenomenal; especially Jaideep Ahlawat.

Sujoy Ghosh has done a good job in direction. He has directed all his departments pretty well. He kept everything tight and that keeps us glued to our seats; something rare these days.

Why 6 stars though and not 9-10?

Anton Chekhov, 19th century writer, advised the following once: "If in the first act you have hung a pistol on the wall, then in the following one it should be fired. Otherwise don't put it there."

Vijay played his character brilliantly. A lot was expected out of his character 'Karan'. If only he had solved a few puzzles in the end, found the missing, and matched the brilliance of the great mathematician for once then perhaps....

A outstanding film to watch though.

It will captivate you from start to finish with its smooth storytelling, ensuring that the audience is fully engaged as it unfolds. However, be prepared for a surprising twist that will keep you on the edge of your seat."

It's an experience that will keep you glued to your screen for the entire duration. The storytelling is so smooth and well-crafted that it effortlessly guides the audience along, setting up expectations for a satisfying conclusion.

But just when you think you've got it all figured out, the movie takes an unexpected turn that will leave you utterly astounded. The way it subverts your expectations is nothing short of brilliant, and it's a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of the filmmakers.

The characters are beautifully developed, each with their own unique quirks and personalities that make them feel incredibly relatable. You'll find yourself rooting for them, empathizing with their struggles.

The cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking, with stunning visuals that transport you to the heart of the story's world. The attention to detail is impeccable, and every frame is a work of art.

The soundtrack is the perfect accompaniment to the movie, enhancing the emotions of each scene and adding depth to the storytelling. It's a soundtrack you'll want to listen to long after the credits roll.

The performances by the cast are top-notch, with each actor delivering a memorable and convincing portrayal of their character (Special mention; JAIDEEP ) You'll be in awe of his talent and the way they bring his the story to life.

Good movie but not without flaws
nidhigouthi26 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Overall a nice movie.. acting was extraordinary... 1st half was interesting.. 2nd half becomes a bit slow and predictable.. Few flaws that I could notice: 1. Tara hid the fact about telling cops about best friend Maria from the teacher... It wasn't used against Maya before removing her from suspect list... 2. Teacher went into the hotel room with the beggar but none was mentioned by the hotel owner at time of investigation...

3. Maya did notice the defect in the wall in the beginning of the movie... so did she plan everything already to put the blame on the Teacher???

4. Where did Ajit's actual dead body go???

A solid mystery thriller... Jaideep Ahlawat shines 👍👍
stacymartin-0864321 September 2023
Well are you a sucker for good old murder mystery thrillers? Then I'll highly recommend this movie to you Great performances by the 3 main leads Especially Jaideep ahlawat Dude just stole the show with his acting here Also you may find a major similarity with Drishyam1 No no its not copied from Drishyam1 technically Because the novel this movie is based on i.e "the devotion of suspect X"Drishyam 1's storyline was losely based on this novel only So here one similarity you'll naturally find in this movie with Drishyam But overall the characters bring nice originality and suspense Will keep you hooked on from start.

Story starts on a bad note (for that u need to watch it) as a audience I was like maybe Naren the teacher had a bad phase, but then the story makes a little bit curve. In few minutes u are going to make a little spicy story in ur head suddenly tudum villain came into the storyline. From now on full on planning and masala will entertain you . From my PoV the after the half part it is little bit slow but the story and grip needs that slowness. Also the kudos to the actors and the director who made this movie. A good a movie to watch if u want to do exercise for ur brain 😙 Xd , Kidding ! But it is a good a watch. And the salute to Jaideep ahlawat.

finally Bollywood got its brains back
saru20209 October 2023
Surprisingly/finally, a good movie from Bollywood.

Though it is loosely based on the Malayalam epic: Dhrisyam, it still stands out with its unique portrayal of story-telling with loads of twists & turns and very good characterizations and arc of the character conveying the message in abstract format.

Seeing Kareena Kapoor in a good film like this after a very long time, this is probably the best one of hers.

The professor's character arc was so good and catchy and the drove the entire film forward in the end, it makes us think a lot since there's some math involved and hence there needs some intellectual introspection as well.

The only Con about this film is that it has a lot of violence/negativity around the plot itself

but, if you're a film fanatic, this film is a must-watch for sure.

Ending could have been more satisfying
sharonphilip-5849121 September 2023
Impressive. Unexpected plot twists. Excellent use of colors and cast.

Portrays the intensity of one-sided love and that too from an eccentric academic. A dark experience.

Naaru brought back memories of a guy from my school days who had an equally eccentric way of expressing his feelings, just like the character in the movie. It's not about judging but noticing the resemblance.

While the movie had a strong presence, the ending left me wanting a bigger revelation. Perhaps my anticipation for more depth in this film, beyond a short-story format, influenced my slightly underwhelming experience.

Tricked me into thinking this was going to be a perfect crime movie
A-Shekhar21 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This movie disguised itself to make it look like a perfect crime movie like the "Drishyam" movies only to have the teacher take the fall for it in the end.... ??? Why, so that he has enough time to solve a math problem? Prison isn't that easy or private for god's sake, you think you could just sit all day in prison and solve your maths problem while they feed you and bathe you, and no one bothers you??? What a waste of my time.. all the A=B=C therefore A must be C nonsense and calling Naren, The Teacher, a Mathematical genius who practices Jujitsu and stuff... for what, just to take the fall for it, why lengthen it so much then.. just take the fall, move the body into Naren's room, exchange the heating rod, smash the hands or heck, burn the body there, act crazy, call the cops.. done... why waste our 2+ hours...

Engrossing thriller
madanmarwah29 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie spins an absorbing web of suspense using the following characters in a hilly town Kalimpong which is gloomy, ominous, creepy and dark. A single mother Maya D'Souza (Kareena Kapoor) managing an eatery with two assistants. (She has a school going teenaged daughter.) Her abusive husband Ajit ( Saurabh Sachdeva) who lives separated, has been harassing her and now visits her after many years to extort money. Her neighbour Naren ( Jaideep Ahlawat) a school teacher, a reclusive maths wizard, super sensitive about his balding head, helpful but has suicidal tendencies. A young easy going cop Karan ( Vijay Verma) who has come from Mumbai to investigate the murder.

Director Sujoy Ghosh keeps the suspense alive and the audience will find the narrative interesting. Viewers may find the plot reminiscent of " Drishyam". ( It seems that the movie was planned some years back but was not made earlier due to this reason). There is a dead body to be disposed off, there are attempts to cover up, there are alibis to be checked out, there are loose ends, there is a shifting focus on suspects etc etc, it's all there. Some good acting from all artists who make the characters believable. Kareena's deglamourised avatar as oppressed wife, teacher Jaideep's silent brooding demeanour, husband Saurabh's sinister attitude and cop Vijay's persistent questioning all appear realistic.

Jaideep Alahwat is the OG
enigmaviews18 October 2023
You can criticize this movie as much a you must but this is all about Jaideep. Everyone else is a supporting actor. They sure f'ed up the ending but still, he was phenomenal. Kareena was really good in her role, she played it perfectly. Vijay was excellent as always, charming & sharp.

I sure would have liked a very big twist at the ending, but I kind of saw the ending from a mile away, it's dissapointing that Bollywood is still using sterotypical endings. Endings have always been a weak point for Bollywood and it remains still, be it Khufiya or Jaane Jaan.

I wish we get a new or more fresh movies & web series which have an amazing character ending: Abbas-Mustan style ending, which defo gives you a kick.

A mindbender in the true sense!! Jaideep Ahlawat is brilliant!!
sanjubhat23 September 2023
Film Review: Jaane Jaan streaming on Netflix

Directed by Sujoy Ghosh, this film is a true mindbender with its brilliantly executed twists and turns!!

A mother (Kareena Kapoor) with a murky past is hiding from an abusive husband in Kalimpong when her past catches up with her. She accidentally kills her husband and is in a dilemma about what needs to be done! Her introvert neighbour Naren ( Jaideep Ahlawat), a nerdy yet brilliant mathematician who secretly loves Kareena agrees to help her out and that's when the cat and mouse game with the police begins !! Vijay Verma plays a sharp, handsome & suave Mumbai cop who is coincidentally in Kalimpong in search of Kareena's husband who is wanted in another case !! Who will prevail in the end, the nerd or the cop is what this film is all about!!

All three lead actors -Kareena , Vijay Varma & Jaideep Ahlawat are brilliant in their respective roles , especially Ahlawat with his make-up, quirky mannerisms and calm demeanor in the most stressful of situations!! The guy seems to be getting better by the day!!

Screenplay is crisp and is engaging from the first scene itself. Brilliant direction by Sujoy Ghosh coupled with great Cinematography depicting the dull and gloomy landscape of Kalimpong is also worth a mention!!

A mind bender in the true sense!! Must watch for true aficionados of this genre!!

Going with 3.5 ⭐⭐⭐✨ for this one.. adios 🙂!!

Sorry Sujoy....Drishyam did this better
agasi99921 September 2023
I was looking forward to this film especially because Sujoy Ghosh was directing this film. The movie is a decent thriller but I don't think it has the wow factor that we've now come to expect after seeing the Drishyam movies or similar shows on Netflix. A lot of us watch such movies for the final reveal in the climax or the twist in the tale, however the twist here is a tad tepid and something we could even see coming. When it's finally revealed you just go "oh okay" instead of "wow" and the movie takes an unnecessarily long time to get there. The actors do a good job and keeps us from getting distracted even when you're thinking "why is this going on for this long?"

Intense

Sameer lodaya

sujoy came with this movie in his typical style of direction where he keeps you thrilled and amazed till the end .

The concept is based on the novel the devotion of suspect x but viewers will comment as a small copy of drishyam..it would be wrong if we connect the concept with drishyam as the makers here have shown what was in the book..the concept is well made for screening on a small screen in a little dark and intense manner..the pace of the movie is good and the thrills are also very sharp..the movie will keep you engage deeply..the climax is one of its kind will make you baffled

The casting here is a explosive box where you can see is vijay, jaydeep and Kareena..the character of jaydeep is very unique and he played so marvellously with his partial bald and serious intense looks..Vijay played a wicked cop with his ease expressions and evil smile..Kareena was thankfully shown of her age and not a younger girl which she played very well

Get Thrilled this weekend with this movie.

A Riveting Blend of Crime, Drama, and Mystery
alifarazpbh24 September 2023
"Jaane Jaan" is a compelling fusion of crime, drama, mystery, and thriller genres, featuring a talented ensemble cast led by Kareena Kapoor, Jaideep Ahlawat, and Vijay Verma. The film takes you on a captivating journey through the intricate web of its narrative, leaving you immersed in suspense from the very start.

**Engaging Opening and Stellar Location (8/10):** The film's opening scene, set in a café, immediately draws you into its world, setting the stage for the unfolding drama. The location where the entire movie unfolds, complemented by outstanding cinematography, stands out as one of its strongest points.

**Powerful Performances (8/10):** Jaideep Ahlawat's portrayal of a math genius is a highlight of the film. His character's nuances and the way he conveys emotions with subtle lip movements are a marvel to watch. Vijay Verma shines as a charismatic cop, and his dialogue delivery and charismatic smiles add depth to his character. Kareena Kapoor delivers a commendable performance, effectively portraying a single mother navigating through a sea of emotions and confusion.

**Well-Edited Narrative (8/10):** The film's excellent editing keeps the pacing tight, ensuring that viewers are never bored. With only one song, "Jaane Jaan" remains laser-focused on its story and character development, creating an immersive experience.

**Intriguing Suspense (7/10):** "Jaane Jaan" excels in building suspense. It invites viewers to engage in the story, attempting to predict its course, and even after the credits roll, the film lingers in your thoughts. The mathematical approach that Jaideep's character uses to represent everyday life is a unique and captivating aspect of the film.

**Perfect Runtime and Location (8/10):** The movie benefits from a well-balanced runtime, ensuring that it neither rushes through crucial scenes nor overstays its welcome. The choice of a small hill station as the setting enhances the film's classic suspense feel.

**Memorable Supporting Character (8/10):** Saurabh Sachdeva's portrayal of a character perfectly suited to him adds depth to the narrative. His performance invokes a strong emotional response, making you initially dislike his character, a testament to his acting prowess.

**Conclusion (4/5):** "Jaane Jaan" is a gripping thriller that excels in keeping you on the edge of your seat. With a well-crafted narrative, stellar performances, and a location that adds to its charm, it's a movie well worth watching. If you're a fan of suspense and thriller genres, "Jaane Jaan" promises an enjoyable and thought-provoking cinematic experience. I rate it 8 out of 10 stars for its ability to captivate and engage its audience throughout its runtime.

One time flick

Warning: Spoilers
The movie had good casting, location , crew etc but its similarity with drishyam spoils the show. The plot could have been a bit different with same cast . Then it would have been one of the best thrillers. Jaideep Ahlawat , Kareena and Vijay gave their best performance in the movie . The director and crew ticked all boxes for the movie apart from adapting a similar storyline to drishyam. There was no lag in the movie and the story moves steadily . The movie becomes predictable once you realise it has similarity with drishyam. The background score and cinematography was done well. But is it exactly similar to drishyam? That you have to find out by watching.

Fast paced thriller. Too many plot holes.
desiette2 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Kareena 's character Maya is an ex-stripper sold into the stripping profession by her abusive policeman husband Ajith. The movie opens with Maya living in Kalimpong 13 years after running away from Ajith, with her daughter. Her next door neighbor, Naren, in Kalimpong is a Math teacher nerd who secretly crushes on Maya.

One day Ajith shows up out of the blue and threatens to take Maya 's daughter and turn her into a stripper. Maya kills Ajith. Naren hears the commotion through a hole in their common wall and offers to dispose of the body.

Since Maya has no alibi for the day of the murder, Naren helps he concoct an alibi for the next day and kills a homeless man the day after the murder, and burns his body to make him unrecognizable. Since he does this the next day, the forensic pathologist predicts day of death as one day after the actual murder. Maya has an alibi and the inspector on the case is unable to pin this on her.

All this build up is done very well with great acting. But great acting cannot make up the gaping holes in the plot, which are

1) How did Naren dispose of Ajith's body? We wait till the end, but this is never shown.

2) The inspector shows up at the diner where Maya works. Later he shows up at Maya's daughter's school because Ajith had mentioned he would be going there. The inspector sees Maya there and immediately decides she has a connection to the case. Why? At the time he knows nothing of her. Rather than assume it is a local woman, that is picking up her daughter from the local school, he immediately jumps to the conclusion that she is related to the case and starts spying on her. Just because he ran into her that morning?

3) Maya acts all guarded and serious. But one evening with the inspector at a Karaoke bar and she drops all her seriousness and starts dancing with him! Seriously? This is the guy who could ruin your life!

Nice acting, nice storyline but far too many plot holes.

Did i miss what happened to the body of the husband? The original problem.
charutabhatt26 September 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Movie was going good, but the original problem of disposing the body is still a question. How did the genius man dispose it? Whats the point killing a new man altogether if the plan was for the body to be found in the first place. I was initially thinking its a smart move for police to find the body and then build a story around it.

Also why did they have to show him to be such a genius, that he couldn't even save himself. And that he created such a mess in the entire film and then had to clean it all again, for just confessing the crime.

Also they put all the help the police got in the hands of one poor waitress. Who just spilled the beans, twice. She was the real villain.

Or maybe i missed something cause i was sometimes on my phone.

Jaane Jan Review: (6.5/10) The story seemed a bit repetitive. The main character is Jaideep, who delivered an incredible performance. However, the makeup artists didn't do a good job with Kareena Kapoor and the teacher's looks. The main focus of the story is the teacher admitting to the murder, but most of the other elements were about a dating scam, similar to what was seen in Drishyam. The movie didn't reveal the location of the actual body.
