What kind of things does an obsessive documentarian like to watch in their free time? It’s a question I was curious to ask John Wilson, a filmmaker who––over three seasons of his singular HBO series, How To with John Wilson––achieved the rare feat of showing one of the most familiar places on Earth in a new and gnarlier yet somehow more endearing light. “I like watching old, recorded TV stuff,” Wilson explained to me recently on an overcast morning at Visions du Réel, “because it still has a lot of the commercials. I also got a bunch of tapes off eBay recently of extreme weather compilations. There was a trend of news channels compiling all of the disaster footage from major ecological events and news events and just pressing a tape of it and putting it out there. It’s nice to have something on all the time,...

At the root of “radical behaviorism,” a concept popularized by psychologist B.F. Skinner in the 1970s, is the belief that all behavior is the result of external conditioning and can thus be controlled. Think Pavlov’s dog. The title of Dua Lipa’s third studio album, Radical Optimism, nods to Skinner’s concept, but the British pop singer’s conviction that finding joy amid the chaos of life is simply a choice is more akin to that of a self-help book or the principles of Burning Man, which emphasize an empowering sense of self-reliance and expression.
“I know the mind is quick to throw away the moment,” Lipa pronounces on “Falling Forever,” a rollicking barnburner about keeping the lovelights aflame. She dispenses similar nuggets of wisdom and affirmations—often directed at herself—throughout Radical Optimism, acknowledging her control issues on “Whatcha Doing” while at the same time finding a bit...

The morning of the blockade, Emily Collins, co-founder of the climate group Rave Revolution, suits up in a pair of camo pants and combat boots, unaware of the conflict that lies ahead. In the garage, her fellow co-founder, Tommy Diacono, puts the finishing touches on his masterpiece — a human-size planet Earth sign made out of wood with the day’s objective emblazoned in white paint: “Burners of the World Unite.”

Exclusive: Burning Man made national headlines last weekend as shocking weather ravaged the desert campout arts festival and sent thousands searching for ways out of the playa.
From Chris Rock and Diplo hitching a ride out with a fan to a slew of Hollywood types and tech bros sludging through the mud after their private planes couldn’t reach them, it was a crazy year for the event, which has been running since 1986.
So, it’s apt that there’s a docuseries – The Man Will Burn – in the works about the event.
Double Agent, a joint venture between Black Bear and New Regency that is behind Asif Kapadia’s next feature film 2073, Noujaim Films, which was behind Egyptian revolution doc The Square, and The Othrs, the production company behind HBO’s The Vow, are behind the series.

I haven’t been to Burning Man in 10 years. I went for the first time with my wife, and we ran around for a couple of days and thought, “Wow, that was crazy.” It was very stimulating. Lots of lights. This may sound very “woo-woo” and I’m not a “woo-woo” guy, but lately I’ve been hearing that it’s a great place to go to learn something about yourself. It wasn’t even supposed to be an option for me because I should have been shooting a movie in Australia right now but the strike shut me down, so I was at home and available. My buddies were planning a guy’s trip and I thought, you know what, I love these guys and I should go. Maybe I can learn something, see some beautiful art, meet some cool people and have a great time.

Chris Rock and DJ Diplo have avoided troubles relating to the Burning Man festival after getting a ride in a fan’s pickup truck.
Attendees at the Burning Man festival, which is held in the Nevada desert each year, are currently dealing with muddy conditions that have led to shelter-in-place orders due to heavy rainfall.
Diplo shared the ordeal in an Instagram video featuring him and Rock sitting in a pickup truck. Diplo and Rock were with five other people, in addition to bags of equipment.
“I legit walked the side of the road for hours with my thumb out cuz i have a show in dc tonight and didnt want to let yall down. Also shoutout to this guy for making the smart purchase of a truck not knowing it was for this exact moment,” Diplo captioned the post.

Tacoma Fd is one of the funniest and wackiest workplace comedies. The truTV series follows a crew of firefighters in one of the rainiest cities in America. It can be challenging to describe HBO’s How To with John Wilson to the uninitiated. The show, which debuts its third and final season Friday night, presents itself on its surface as a guide to modern life with 30-minute episodes titles like “How to Find a Public Restroom” and “How to Clean Your Ears.” But as told through the eyes of its 36-year-old videographer narrator John Wilson — a self-described “anxious New Yorker” who was discovered by Nathan Fielder, who mines similar surreal territory in The Rehearsal — it begins to take on quirkier and more profound inflections. Imagine Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom with cameras trained on mankind; now imagine it drifting off occasionally into a melancholy road diary of lost America. That’s How To with John Wilson. The series has found a passionate following as well as critical acclaim (season two earned an Emmy nomination for outstanding...

Following a five-day search, it was announced on Thursday that all five men on board were killed in just seconds after the submersible suffered a “catastrophic implosion” 1,600ft from the bow of the Titanic, according to the US Coast Guard, reports Mirror.co.uk.
The search for the submarine prompted widespread conversations and debate on social media, with 56-year-old John making his view on the matter known.
In a post shared to his Twitter, the Serendipity actor tweeted: “I like the adventure spirit – but if someone dies climbing Mount Everest – it doesn’t seem tragic to me – sad yes – but tragic to me is when innocent people die who had no choice.”

From riding boats in Venice to landing in Tuscany in a helicopter, “Book Club: The Next Chapter” star Jane Fonda had quite the adventure in Italy with Diane Keaton, Mary Steenburgen and Candice Bergen.
Her favorite memory there? “When we went to see the Sistine Chapel at night, and there was nobody else there,” Fonda told Variety at the New York premiere on Monday night. “And we had the whole ceiling explained to us by a great guide. That was a real treat.”
Although the sequel was filmed nearly five years after the original, Fonda never lost contact with her “Book Club” co-stars.
“We’ve seen each other ever since we made the first movie,” Fonda said. “We go to each other’s houses for dinner, we text each other, we email each other, we do Zoom together. It’s not like we were apart and then suddenly reunited.”

Emma Chamberlain Is about to go off script. Which, to be clear, is totally fine with everyone here in this industrial warehouse in downtown Los Angeles on this sunny winter day. It’s fine with Chamberlain’s publicist. It’s fine with the representatives from Spotify, who are hosting the Stream On event in which Chamberlain is about to make her appearance. It’s fine with the woman who will be interviewing her, who gives off strong teleprompter vibes herself but who is apparently game to have Chamberlain just wing it.

For many, photos of Cara Delevingne looking frazzled at Van Nuys Airport in September 2022 were evidence that the actor and model was yet another troubled celebrity on a downward spiral. For Delevingne, though, they were a wakeup call that helped trigger a life change.
In a March 8 cover story for Vogue, Delevingne described the photos as a major source of shame. "I hadn't slept. I was not okay," she said, telling the outlet that she had just returned from Burning Man when the photos were snapped - and at the time, she was still in denial about what was actually happening. "It's heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, 'Okay, I don't look well,'" she said. "You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for."

Cara Delevingne Says Concerning Paparazzi Images Led to Rehab Stay, Sobriety Journey: “I Was Not Ok”
Cara Delevingne sparked widespread concern after paparazzi images captured at a private airport in L.A. last September showed the model and actress looking disheveled and acting erratically upon returning from Burning Man. Now, in a revealing cover interview with Vogue, the 30-year-old said she’s grateful for those images because it sent her on a path to rehab and sobriety.
“I hadn’t slept. I was not Ok,” she told Vogue writer Chioma Nnadi. “It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, Ok, I don’t look well. You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for.”
For the interview, conducted in late January, Delevingne confessed that she was four months sober after a stint in rehab late last year. “I’ve had interventions of a sort, but I wasn’t ready.

Located somewhere between a classic opera, a modern dance piece, and a deadly fever dream — between the timeless beauty of ancient myth and the modern nightmare of America’s current immigration policies — Benjamin Millepied’s “Carmen” is stretched across a few too many borders to ever feel like it’s standing on solid ground. And yet, (Nicolas Britell) for the kind of aggressively unclassifiable movie that would never exist if not for these two artists reaching beyond their disciplines to create it themselves.
Loosely inspired by Georges Bizet’s 1875 opera of the same name — so loosely, in fact, that Millepied thinks of his film as less of a re-telling or adaptation than he does a version of Bizet’s tragedy from a parallel universe — this “Carmen” moves the action from the southern tip of Spain to the northern cusp of Mexico, pares the source material’s busy story down to the brink of abstraction,...

Demi Rose is taking it back to Burning Man as she shows off a past festival look from the Nevada desert.
The 27-year-old British beauty is fresh from sharing throwback looks on Instagram, with one documenting a bold and girly topless look and one donning a Burning Man festival outfit that showed Demi’s love of glitter.
Posing with her eyes closed behind shades, she enjoyed Las Vegas and the Black Rock Desert while highlighting her curves in an unusual and bold pasties getup.
All glitter and red hearts at the chest, Demi added in a red shawl, dramatic cream fan, plus statement eyewear.

It's hard to imagine Elizabeth Holmes draped in glow sticks—but The Dropout nearly gave it to us. In the Hulu limited series, Amanda Seyfried stars as Holmes, the bio-tech entrepreneur and founder of Theranos who was found guilty on four counts of fraud in January 2022. While The Dropout, which detailed the rise and fall of the start-up and its founder, ends on a solemn note—with Holmes and her dog getting into an Uber after an argument with Theranos lawyer Linda Tanner (Michaela Watkins)—the series nearly took a very different approach to its final moments. "For the ending, we initially had envisioned it at Burning Man," showrunner Elizabeth...

This year’s limited series race is a competitive one: three Hulu shows are up against titles from Netflix and HBO, and four of the nominees tell captivating and hard-to-believe true stories of greed, fraud and public humiliation. Creatives behind each nominated series — Dopesick‘s Danny Strong, The Dropout‘s Elizabeth Meriwether, Inventing Anna‘s Shonda Rhimes, Pam & Tommy‘s Robert Seigel and D.V. DeVincentis, and The White Lotus‘ David Bernad — reflect on the challenges of writing television when the real-life stories haven’t yet ended, when they realized their projects were going to be powerful and watching their stars come together and discover their characters.

In the mesmerizing and strangely beautiful documentary “Matter Out of Place,” which world premieres in International Competition at the Locarno Film Festival on Wednesday, Austrian director Nikolaus Geyrhalter looks at how we dispose of our trash. But, taking a broader view, he is trying to gain a better understanding of mankind, and the impact it is having on the planet, he tells Variety.
The locations for the film are wide ranging: it moves from the mountains of Switzerland to the coasts of Greece and Albania, to an Austrian refuse incinerator, and then to Nepal and the Maldives, and finally to the deserts of Nevada for the Burning Man event.
When choosing locations, sound was as much of a consideration as the images. Geyrhalter says he invested heavily in capturing high-quality surround sound, which is designed to be heard using Dolby Atmos, and then carefully fine tuned the results when it...

Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for “Lizzy,” the finale of “The Dropout,” which premiered April 7 Hulu.
When Elizabeth Meriwether was first planning “The Dropout” — her Hulu adaptation of the popular ABC News podcast of the same name, which chronicled the spectacular rise and precipitous fall of Theranos founder, Elizabeth Holmes — she had an idea about where she wanted the story to end: Burning Man. “It seemed like an interesting place for a kind of quote-unquote rebirth, you know?” Meriwether said.
She could picture Elizabeth, played by Amanda Seyfried, along with her mysterious new boyfriend Billy Evans, as Burners frolicking in the desert without a care in the world. After all, in August 2018, images of the couple at the annual late-summer festival had emerged on social media: In a viral photograph, Holmes can be seen in a T-shirt and fur-collared jacket, wearing hot pink sunglasses and a blissed-out grin. The Producers Guild on Wednesday unveiled key dates for its PGA Innovation Award, which is bestowed upon the production of a new-media program that elevates the audience’s viewing experience. The application period is open now and the deadline for submission is January 14, 2022.
Programs released between January 1-December 31, 2021 are eligible for the honor, which is in its third year. For programs that cannot be viewed linearly via the existing submission procedure, a video demonstration may be submitted instead.
The PGA said the winning submission will challenge the limits of standard formats and drive forward the industry’s perception and application of new media in an entertainment context. The award honors exceptional distinctiveness, inventiveness, and impact of the submitted work in expanding the conventions of program format, content, audience interaction, production technique and delivery.
Last year, the team behind BRCvr, an official virtual Burning Man Experience hosted on AltSpaceVR, won the award.

Clifford the Big Red Dog was born in a series of children’s books, the first of which was published in 1963. In the decades since, the adventures of the scarlet canine mascot-hero have been spun into three popular PBS Kids TV series, a live musical, video games, and the 2004 animated feature “Clifford’s Really Big Movie,” which was adapted from one of the TV series (and did very little business). All of which is to say that unlikely as it may sound, the new “Clifford the Big Red Dog” is the first really big Clifford movie. So what does that mean?

There is much to be gleaned about the future of creativity from the work being made in virtual reality: From Sundance to Burning Man, the past year has offered many examples of successful large-scale virtual events in 3D. However, among the major fall film festivals, only Venice’s VR Expanded section has made room for the emerging medium, and only the most recent edition showcased a key aspect of VR’s expansion that is poised to grow prominent: the social side.
In addition to the 24 projects in Competition and a handful of others, programmers Liz Rosenthal and Michel Reilhac curated a selection of 34 user-generated worlds created in social platform VRChat. The spaces ranged from sci-fi and adventure quest themes to full-on artworks and interactive music videos, many of which were built on massive scales inconceivable for any physical festival space.

A pop-culture pastiche artist, filmmaker Ana Lily Amirpour has anchored her now three-strong filmography less around a shared a visual aesthetic or thematic concern than around a very singular vibe: It’s as if the girl walked home alone one night, music in her earbuds, perspective chemically altered, imagination running wild and decided at that moment to spend the rest of her career exploring it in film.
Which is a noble project, don’t get me wrong, especially given the ways Amirpour takes her taciturn female protagonists and sets them loose in wholly different mash-ups. With her debut, “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night,” she spun a Farsi-language vampire tale that followed the beats of a western; and with her follow-up, “The Bad Batch,” she imagined the post-apocalypse as a particularly bad trip to Burning Man.
And now, with “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon,” which premiered in competition at Venice on Sunday,...

Of all the live events that pivoted to online experiences in the Covid era, Burning Man was not the most obvious candidate. The 35-year-old desert gathering thrives on chaotic communal interactions under the scorching Nevada sun, where dazed, euphoric wanderers explore vast outdoor sculptures and utopian encampments while adhering to an earthy set of principles established by the founders. Burning Man is the kind of dizzying phenomenon that would never translate to Zoom, but virtual reality is a different story.
In 2020, when Burning Man canceled its physical edition, a team of long-time Burners built BRCvr, a sprawling virtual reality rendition of the Burning Man “playa” that included both virtual renditions of art showcased in years and new offerings exclusive to the environment. Virtual “camps” allowed longtime Burners to revisit their old haunts, DJs played virtual sets, and, of course, there was the virtual burning of the man.

Robert G. Putka's latest indie film, Mister Limbo, will premiere during this year's Fantaspoa International Fantastic Film Festival. The Brazilian genre festival has gone virtual again this year, under the shadow of the global health crisis but that just means that more people in Brazil will get to check out this new film. Two strangers wake up in the middle of the desert with no memory of anything - including their names. Are they dead? Or did they just party too hard at Burning Man? A warm buddy film at heart - but hopefully also a rumination on existential themes such as regret, cynicism, faith, and empathy - Mister Limbo is an odyssey evoking Waiting For Godot on drugs, with a soft spot...

If you’ve watched CBS in the past several months, including during the Super Bowl, you’ve probably heard the network’s new five-note mnemonic. The cue now appears in most CBS promos and I.D.s and has become CBS’ audio signature, often paired with the classic network tagline “This Is CBS.”
Now, CBS is taking the mnemonic a step further, hiring dance music DJ and producer Cid to create three new songs that incorporate both the five-note cue and old audio of a network announcer intoning, “This… Is CBS.” Each song incorporates a different music style: “Oculus Audax” (Latin for “Bold Eye”) comes with an Edm beat; “Unum Oculum” (Latin for “Unified Eye”) is more of a rhythmic chill sound; and “Oculus Fortem” (Latin for “Strong Eye”) is a pop/rock mix. Scroll down to hear more.

For those of you who have never experienced the madness of a Sion Sono film, there is probably no amount of words in the English language that could properly prepare you for the experience of watching Prisoners of the Ghostland. It’s a film that defies definition and induces its audiences with sensory aphasia. With over 50 films under his belt, the Japanese director has built a formidable legacy of films, each one bringing its audiences to places stranger than the last, and each one delving deeper into the insanity of Sono’s artistic vision. Add Nicolas Cage to the mix, and the result is nothing short of a grindhouse classic.
Cage stars as the film’s protagonist, referred to simply as Hero. While serving a lengthy prison sentence for a bank robbery gone horribly wrong, his chance at redemption and freedom comes when the self-appointed government of Samurai Town (Bill Moseley.

Karl Williams, the longtime Paramount Pictures publicist who was integral in campaigns for the studio’s Transformers, Iron Man, Star Trek, Indiana Jones and other franchises, died Sunday of liver complications at Glenbrook Hospital in Glenview, Il. He was 52.
For those like me who worked with Karl, he was a hysterically funny, good-guy, cinema savant and ultimate fanboy — a trailblazer in digital PR before any studio employed such experienced flacks in the current Twitter/YouTube/Facebook/Snapchat-obsessed promo era. For reporters, he was the face of the studio he worked with, notably Paramount, where he spent the bulk of his career. And for those who annually spent time with Karl at Burning Man, he was that groovy guy who ran camp.
Even when Karl was the assistant to a bigger PR exec, he had the answers and the access, whether it was getting you into a screening or possibly getting you into a premiere.

Daisy Ridley and Jennifer Hudson’s avatars stood on stage before a captive audience. “I’ve been holed up for a year, so this is like the first party I’ve been to and it’s just great,” said Ridley, as her animated self smiled and looked out at the room. “I’m in awe,” Hudson added.

Bess Kalb didn’t mean to end 2020 by making Christopher Hitchens’ “Why Women Aren’t Funny” go viral. The 2007 Vanity Fair essay is — like so much of its late author’s work — self-indulgent, poorly written and lacking any well-defined quality beside its ability to irritate people.
One of those irritated people, more than a decade ago, was a young Kalb. In a Twitter thread posted Tuesday, the veteran late-night writer recalled the moment when, as an unsuspecting college sophomore, she picked up a copy of Vanity Fair in Penn Station, then read Hitchens’ essay.
She then drew a narrative line from that moment, which inspired her to pursue a career in comedy, to the creation of “Yearly Departed,” the new Amazon special created by Kalb and featuring a cast made up mostly of women and an all-woman writing staff.
