Pulitzer Prize-winning filmmaker David Mamet comes out of a 10-year hibernation today with a trailer for his upcoming thriller Henry Johnson. The prison drama finds Shia Labeouf and Evan Jonigkeit turning up the heat inside a hostage situation.
Here’s the official synopsis for Henry Johnson courtesy of the project’s production company 1993:
Written and Directed by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet, Henry Johnson follows the title character (Jonigkeit) as he navigates his search for a moral center, after an act of compassion upends his life. Looking to authority figures he encounters along the way — including his eventual cellmate, Gene (Labeouf) — Henry’s journey leads him down a road of manipulation and ethical uncertainty. The film is an exploration of power, justice and the consequences of letting others choose your path for you.

Paranormal Activity etched its name in horror lore as one of those rare marketing moments that altered the very fabric of the genre as we knew it. An undisputable monster in a genre of monsters. A cultural phenomenon that stood for everything we loved about the genre. A movie that made you feel something in a way only horror can provide. Some went home and turned on all the lights in the house. Some scoffed, proudly unbothered by its attempts to creep them out. But everyone saw it. Everyone talked about it. Most of them thirsty for more home video shenanigans. How the hell do you follow that up? This… is what happened to Paranormal Activity 2.
In 2007, Paranormal Activity made close to $200 million dollars on a $15,000 budget. Meaning the Corleone’s themselves could have put a severed horse head in the bed of every executive at Paramount Pictures to stop...

The best Anna Kendrick movies feature a strong mix of romantic dramas and comedies and some fantasy and thriller films along the way. Kendrick first rose to prominence with a supporting part in The Twilight Saga and, since then, has grown into one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood. She has led a franchise, been nominated for an Academy Award, and lent her voice to some beloved animated characters.
Kendrick has such a versatile filmography that her movies vary pretty heavily in quality, with some being honored during the awards season and others mostly remaining in comfort food guilty pleasure cinema. However, one of the key things about her film releases is that she is often one of the best things in them, delivering great performances every time she appears on the big or small screen, elevating anything she appears in.

Ryan Reynolds' career started young; many were first introduced to him in the brief yet popular TV sitcom Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place. Yet, those tuning into that late '90s comedy about 20-somethings running a pizzeria would have been unaware that Reynolds would go on to become one of the biggest names in Hollywood. It was a bit of a long road to get there, with some early highlights (or lowlights) coming via juvenile comedies like Van Wilder and Waiting before he became one of the most bankable superheroes in the MCU with his performance as Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool.
Reynolds has starred in more than 80 films and TV shows, and looking back at his career retrospectively, many hidden gems hinted at him becoming a pop-culture staple before the success of Deadpool. One movie that stands tall above the rest is 2014's The Voices, a dark...

For many years, Hollywood didn't really know what to do with Ryan Reynolds. He was tried as a romantic lead, but few of his romance films were enormous hits. He also stumbled as an intense horror icon; the remake of "The Amityville Horror" didn't do him any favors. Reynolds was celebrated as a comedic lead in films like "Waiting..." and "Van Wilder," but he could only play an immature buffoon for so long. Many know of his missteps as an action star, as films like "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Green Lantern" have been wildly lambasted by fans and even Reynolds himself. It wouldn't be until performances in films like "The Voices," "Pokémon Detective Pikachu," and of course, "Deadpool" that the destined-for-stardom star would finally become a force to be reckoned with. His 2024 film "Deadpool & Wolverine" (which he also produced and co-wrote) made over $1.3 billion.

With the latest billion-dollar hit Deadpool & Wolverine, Ryan Reynolds has established himself as a brand in Hollywood. A decade ago, the actor had a very different career graph. He was starring in flops back-to-back and interestingly he noticed a pattern in these types of films. After starring in a 2013 supernatural action film that bombed at the box office, he decided to take a step back.

Reynolds decided to reevaluate his movie selection process and started appearing in projects that he felt more comfortable in. He wanted more creative control in his films, a dream that came true when he entered the Deadpool franchise in 2016.

"Even my death doesn't interest them!" Is any of this funny? Studiocanal has revealed an official trailer for a film titled Dear Paris, also called Paradis Paris (Paradise Paris), another Paris anthology film creation featuring an interconnected set of stories. Not related to 2006's Paris, I Love You anthology, but it reminds me of it anyway. A new film from the award-winning director Marjane Satrapi, witness a darkly hilarious love letter to the city of light - with a stunning ensemble cast including Monica Bellucci, Rossy de Palma, Alex Lutz, Martina García, Eduardo Noriega , and Ben Aldridge. A comedy with a dark sense of humor, where a flurry of charming characters confront death only to embrace life once again. This opens in France soon this month, but no international dates are set yet – expected later this year. This looks charming & amusing, with plenty of awkward humor. // Continue Reading ›...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is This What I Told Myself It Would Be?
Directed by Marjane Satrapi and written by Michael R. Perry, “The Voices” has a phenomenal trailer — snappy, stunning, and with a hunky Chinese Elvis impersonator! I would know; I’ve seen it dozens of times in the decade since Lionsgate made the movie: a feature that, up until now, I haven’t watched and will be using this week’s IndieWire After Dark to recommend to myself. Let me (us?) explain.

It seems impossible to think of movies from the '00s without Ryan Reynolds and the immense pop-cultural influence many of his films had on the period. The Canadian actor has been a stalwart on screens for a long time, though, with his earliest roles dating all the way back to 1991. While he cemented his fame and truly became a global superstar in the 00's, Reynolds' older fans will also remember him fondly from his roles like Two Guys and a Girl.
Long before he was known for his comic book character roles, Reynolds had a more wholesome image as the funny guy. He's since gone on to prove he has much more depth, starring in everything from comedies to romances, dramas, horrors, and science-fiction films.

ABC Signature, the production arm of the Disney-owned network, has re-upped its first-look deal with P3 Media, the brainchild of Emmy-winning journalist, producer and attorney Adam Ciralsky.
P3 Media is an intellectual property generator and incubator that is driven by the model of bringing IP engines in-house and churning out premium IP-driven content. Monotony isn’t a problem for the generic citizens of Free City, an open-world video game in the vein of “Grand Theft Auto,” where robberies, shootouts, and explosion are commonplace.
Within this virtual realm of bloodless violence, director Shawn Levy builds the action-packed rom-com “Free Guy,” his most thematically ambitious project yet thanks to writers Matt Lieberman (“The Christmas Chronicles”) and Zak Penn (“Ready Player One”).
Fortunately for this team, their big-budget creation evokes a bit of “The Truman Show” more than it does the dreadful “Pixels,” another picture that bet on the mass appeal of video-game culture but with an angle of nostalgia. Levy, a Hollywood regular behind the bankable “Night at the Museum” franchise, operates in eye-popping VFX set pieces and above-average comic timing, consistently landing dialogue-driven, self-aware gags.

A little boy once said “I see dead people”. In The Voices we have a little girl who can hear dead people. For better or for worse, this film is very much in the M. Night vein.
The Voices kicks off with two ladies restrained in a Saw-esque torture-basement before moving back in time to a little girl, seemingly receiving therapy from a young lady wearing sunglasses (while indoors). I am not a therapist, but I would imagine hiding your eyes from your patient is probably the last thing you would want to do. Having said all that, it turns out our therapist is blind, so that told me. We then have a rather confusing flashback after a flashback.

Somewhere under the mountain of bad ideas that combine to make up The Voices, there was probably what seemed like a good one. If blind people's hearing becomes more acute, could that mean that they are sometimes able to hear voices from the spirit world, inaudible to others? If we ignore the fact that the enhanced hearing thing is a myth and allow for the possibility of a spirit world because this is, after all, genre fiction, that seems to have something, but it is extrapolated into a story with spectacular clumsiness.

"You have the power to choose the spirit..." Vertical Entertainment has released an official trailer for The Voices, described as "this spring’s most unnerving new horror film." From filmmaker Nathaniel Nuon, The Voices already opened in Brazil last year but hasn't played at any festivals. Not to be confused with the other horror comedy The Voices from 2014 with Ryan Reynolds (which is worth a watch sometime). A young girl who grows up blind after losing her mother in an accident hears strange voices throughout her life. When she gets pregnant as an adult, she soon discovers her unborn baby has become a vessel a second chance for souls stuck in limbo to be re-born. Don't believe everything you hear. The horror film stars Valerie Jane Parker, Jenna Harvey, Jonathan Stoddard, Rezeta Veliu, Ashley Bell, Jordan Ladd, and Leslie Easterbrook. It looks rather campy and derivative, but gets super intense...

It’s happening. It’s finally happening. What was once a particularly pervasive and aggressive Internet meme is now a reality. HBO Max’s list of new releases for March 2021 is highlighted by none other than the mythical Snyder cut.
The entity now known as Zach Snyder’s Justice League will premiere on March 18. While it was originally planned to be a four-part miniseries, this recut version of 2017’s ill-fated Justice League will in fact be a four-hour movie. But perhaps even four hours won’t be enough for fans who have been waiting years for just such an event.

Oscar-nominated director Marjane Satrapi returns to filmmaking after a five-year hiatus with “Radioactive,” a biopic of Marie Curie starring Rosamund Pike in a powerhouse performance as the famed chemist and physicist. Amazon Studios has dropped a first trailer for the film, which premieres on Prime Video on July 24.
“Radioactive,” which first bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, tells the story of the pioneering scientist, beginning in the 1870s through her resonance in the 21st century, including her romantic and professional partnerships and breakthroughs in medical study that changed science forever. In late 19th-century Paris, the Polish-born Marie Sklodowska met fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley). Together, they revolutionized the meaning of radioactivity, winning a Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering work, which made Curie the first woman to earn that prize. Pierre died tragically in 1906, sending Curie deeper into her field of study, winning a second Nobel Prize,...

I don’t think it’s much of a secret that right now, there is a lot of uncertainty in the world, and I’m not sure how you’re feeling, but this writer could use a little levity in her life right about now. So, with that in mind, I decided to scour a bunch of the various streaming services out there—Vudu, Tubi TV, Amazon Prime, Shudder, Hulu, Netflix, Crackle and YouTube—to put together the ultimate list of “not so serious” horror and sci-fi movies (and one animated series!) that are currently available to watch from the comfort of your own home, as we hunker down and navigate these uncertain times.
Some of these services are free (usually with ads) and some are platforms that you need a subscription for, but with more than 70 different titles here that range from horror comedy to social satire to pitch-black...

The Iranian-French filmmaker of Persepolis and Radioactive was speaking at the Glasgow Film Festival.
Iranian-French filmmaker Marjane Satrapi, the first woman to be nominated for an animation Oscar with her film Persepolis, has called for more female role models on screen.
“Women are half the population of the world so half the stories should be about us, but that’s not the case,” she said to an audience of rising writers and directors at the Glasgow Film Festival on Friday. “And the stories that are made about women have us as the cheated-on girlfriend or old and looking for love.

If I’m being totally honest, the only reasons that I was excited about having a new Grudge film was because of the involvement of director Nicolas Pesce and the stellar group of actors involved with his latest cinematic endeavor. The Grudge films, both the Japanese originals and their Us counterparts, are movies that I do have a great deal of respect for, but ultimately, they’re not really films I have strong feelings about one way or another. So, I have to admit that I was rather surprised by not only how much I enjoyed The Grudge (2020), but how much it affected me on a personal level. That was something I was not expecting, and I give Pesce and his wonderful cast all the credit for coming together to create a film that provides fans with a stellar start to a new year of horror.

In 1895 Paris, Polish immigrant Maria Salomea Skłodowska (Rosamund Pike) was already headed toward a scientific breakthrough when she met fellow researcher Pierre Curie (Sam Riley). When the two physicists first collide, she’s a coiled mass of awkward tics. “Radioactive,” directed by Marjane Satrapi, is the saga of how this blunt, fast-walking workaholic proved the existence of three things: radium, polonium (which she named for her home country) and love. Under her married name, Marie Curie, she became the first woman to win the Nobel prize, and less than a decade later, the first anyone to win two.
Once Marie and Pierre’s meet-cute is checked-off and the triumphant couple has thumbed their noses at the establishment, Satrapi and screenwriter Jack Thorne (who penned the 19th-century meteorological adventure-romance “The Aeronauts”) are free to experiment with more daring narrative risks. After sparking audience interest with a closing-night slot at the Toronto Film Festival,...

The first person we meet in “Ray & Liz” is elderly Ray (Patrick Romer). Alone in a tiny room, abandoned by his wife Liz (Deirdre Kelly), he has taken to his bed seemingly permanently, waking only long enough to drink as much as it takes to keep himself drunk. He keeps a photo of himself as a young man with his bride stuck to a mirror next to a religious pamphlet that delivers the only foreshadowing this film feels like giving: a Bible verse instructing children to “obey [their] parents in everything.”
“Ray & Liz,” Richard Billingham’s debut feature, punctuates its main action with visits to this room, with the rest of the quietly downcast story taking place during the 1980s, as Ray and Liz descend into poverty, despair, and alcoholism in a council flat outside of Birmingham, England. Their children — Richard and his younger brother Jason — are along for the ride,...

While aquatic horror can be fun any time of the year, there’s just something about a genre movie that pits human characters versus nature’s greatest water-bound predators during these warmer months that really puts me into the summertime mood. And with that in mind, you could say that I was already primed to enjoy Crawl even before the first bloodthirsty alligator snapped into action. Director Alexandre Aja, who already has some experience in this realm with his gore-tastic horror comedy Piranha 3D, proves here yet again that he’s a master manipulator of heightened tension and thrills, but he also delivers up a no-nonsense disaster/killer animal mash-up that doesn’t waste a single minute of its efficient 87-minute running time, and even gives us compelling characters (plus Sugar the dog!) that we give a damn about to boot.
