Shocking programme. I watched as a parent of ND
children with a SEN & hoped it would address some real issues on unmet needs in our schools.
Instead Ms Gentles stated her technique works on every Child! I have never heard any of the many professionals I've met profess that they have all the answers. It is well know there isn't a one size fits all approach and every child is an unique individual and interventions need to be tailor made, plus what works once may never work again as the circumstances etc can be very different each time.
It was very clear that these Children had a SEN which wasn't being addressed. No mention of any assesments done, SENCO ,OT, SLT or Ed Psych assesments etc and no mention of sensory overload. Just 80's behavioural techniques that don't address root cause of behaviors.
No understanding of safe space to regulate etc, and removing a child's break time which can help them regulate just seem so typical of what many ND children struggle with.
Plus there were no attempt to help them understand questions, even when a child asked for help. Then a dangerous form of restraint which was unnecessary & has caused real harm to children in the past was used! Had they even tried de-escalate using other methods, there seemed to be no understanding that meltdown is not a choice & there are ways to manage this if staff are properly trained to recognise the red flags and address the childs needs properly and in a timely manner. From the view of ND and SEN parents and many SEN professionals, this woman was not an expert in SEN, and are shocked & appalled.
This was not Inclusive & actually is really damaging as many will assume that the so called Behaviour Expert has a magic wand. When in fact these Children had/have SEN & were being failed by their School & Teachers. Shockingly bias & dangerous programme.
