Strange things going on in Utah and Idaho.
PeteB1234 March 2022
First, we watched the bizarre Lori Vallow Lifetime movie, then we caught the bizarre Martin MacNeil Lifetime movie. What's going on with Mormons?

The Martin MacNeill story is so strange that you'd think it was a work of fiction. Watch some of the actual court video on Youtube and read some of the news articles. Michele's daughter and sister really did have to solve and pursue the case on their own. They were also consultants for the movie.

Nanny with benefits
pumping_iron-14 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Maybe the real Martin Macneill oozed charm, but I thought Tom Everett Scott played his character quite creepy. Honestly, this guy creeped me out. I saw nothing charming about him. Also, who fakes cancer to "protect the family". That made absolutely no sense. Then after his wife's death, he sneaks into his daughter's bed with the excuse he thought she was her dead mother. What was that about. This guy was a weirdo sociopath. The movie was a little boring. The acting was adequate. I was disappointed we weren't told of Gypsy's the "nanny" fate. What happened to her.

A Harrowing Domestic Drama
lavatch12 June 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Dr. Martin MacNeill was the Sunday School Teacher of the Year. He was a respected physician. And he was a devoted family man. That was the superficial impression given of Dr. MacNeill to the ironically named Pleasant Grove, Utah community where he resided.

In fact, Dr. MacNeill had falsified his way in to med school, committed bank fraud, identity theft, and, worst of all, the murder of his caring wife Michelle Marie MacNeill. Dr. MacNeill had a rough childhood, and he would typically diagnose his sociopathic behavior as "acting out."

The sordid details of Dr. MacNeill unfold before the eyes of his incredulous daughter Alexis (Lexi), who adored her father and wanted to follow in his footsteps by attending medical school. But Lexi's career is interrupted with the shocking death of her mother.

The quick-thinking Lexi begins to suspect something is amiss with her father, and she joins forces with her aunt, Linda Cluff, who has always distrusted her brother-in-law. It took years, but Lexi and Linda gathered their evidence to present a case for murder against Dr. MacNeill.

Dr. MacNeill lied to his wife about an affair he was having. Then, after Michelle's death in her bathtub, he shamelessly moved into the family home a woman named "Gypsy," who is ostensibly to serve as the nanny to his three adopted girls. Later, he even makes a pass at Lexi, groping her in a motel.

There were some loose ends to the screenplay, such as the identity of "Olivia," who had some unspecified connection to the three adopted girls. Dr. MacNeill sends Olivia back to Ukraine, and Lexi learns that her father committed identity theft with Olivia's name in order to clear the substantial debts accrued by "Gypsy." But who was Olivia? And what was the connection of Dr. MacNeill to the private investigator who assists Lexi in convicting him? It was never made clear why Dr. MacNeill would meet with his antagonist privately in a coffee shop.

The most moving moments of the film were in the courtroom, where Lexi testifies against her father. The actress was terrific in conveying to the jury the duplicity of her once beloved father and providing them with a portrait of the monster he had become.

The filmmakers were earnest in their attempt to credibly recreate a tragic, true life domestic drama. The most memorable part of the film was the stoic and tenacious daughter, who was relentless in the pursuit of the truth. In the denouement at the cemetery, Lexi leaves flowers on her mother's grave, and we learn that the cowardly Dr. MacNeill has committed suicide in prison.

So Bad
katelynn_dunphy-400235 October 2022
The acting and story line was so over the top. Does anyone know how to act anymore. It was painful to watch.

The only reason I made it through the movie was because it was based on a true story and I wanted to hear the ending.

Don't waste your time. It is time you will never get back.

What was disheartening was the actor that played the father at one time was a good actor. What happened

Lifetime needs to up there game and start hiring some men and women who can act. It is almost like the casting agents are hiring friends. I preferred sharknado to this time suck!

There was a time I used to enjoy lifetime movies. The actors were B rated but had some acting ability. The actress who played the daughter was completely flat the whole movie.

The only actor that had any acting ability was the one that died early in the move. The woman who played the nanny was also horrible.

Please up your game lifetime.

Terrible movie
karena445 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This movie is pretty bad. The script, the plot, the acting. I guess I can't blame the actors, given what they had to work with, but I would be embarrassed to be in a movie like this. The father goes from loving husband to psychopath overnight. The daughter solves a murder that the cops couldn't figure out. She lays out her entire hypothesis during the trial and not once did the defence object. So ridiculous. Might be based on a true story, but I'm sure the trial is complete fiction. Truly bad movie.

Bad on a level I can't quite comprehend
EddieSixx19 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I have given a few 1/10s before in my movie rating days. For this, I am ashamed. I should have saved that score for this piece of utter garbage. Had I known that by comparison some of those former 1/10s would look like The Godfather meets Citizen Kane next to this, I would have given them glowing reviews. I like Tom Everett Scott in most of the work he does, but I have to believe that this was simply a paycheck that he hoped would never see the light of day. Apparently it is based on a true story. Hopefully the actual murderer doesn't have TV priviledges, because watching this movie based on his crimes might be considered cruel and unusual punishment and I would hate to see him freed on a technicality. Simply the worst movie I have seen in many years.

I made an account specifically to write this review.
kathrynramirez5 September 2023
I watch a lot of movies, I love watching thriller/suspense & horror movies they're my forte. However, this movie here was easily one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's a lifetime movie so I went in to the movie with mild expectations. The acting was awful and the actors lacked genuine emotion. The script was atrocious. The plot was excessive. I found myself getting bored and annoyed but stuck it through specifically so I could write this review.

Save yourself an hour and a half and watch anything but this. Just look up the actual case on YouTube you'll get more information and not have to suffer through third hand embarrassment from this cringy script and acting.

Not the best, but still gripping
serge_elia17 April 2023
I've just recently discovered this made-for-TV movie that is based on the true case of Michele MacNeill, who was murdered by her own husband, a fraud and a psychotic womanizer, in 2007.

There's no denying it's not the best crime thriller I've ever seen, but it compensates with being just as tense and gripping as any other crime film, what with its bone-chilling moments that keep you at the edge of your seat, amazing performances (whether it's the desperate daughter or the psychotic father), emotional moments and the like.

In short: not the best, but I loved it nonetheless. A must-watch, IMHO.

Heavy handed and ridiculous
admin-80223 December 2021
Comes down to the director I think. Compelling story, good actors but just terrible result. Everything about it looks implausible even though it's based on a true stories.

Laughably bad, so sad
thejdrage21 January 2024
I'm trying to watch this movie, but it really is SO bad, that I can only take so much of it at a time. And now I'm wondering why am I trying to finish it? And it's because it's based on a true story.

The acting, except for the young actress playing Alexis, is beyond over the top. It's vaudevillian. I've seen these actors in other projects and they are good actors! So I'm going to place the choice on the director.

I think the story, had it been told more coherently and far less dramatically, is sadly fascinating, especially given the makeup of the father. "Good" family man. A doctor, for heavens sake! A dad to a bunch of girls. And he falls in lust with a hussy (just had to used that word!!) with an unforgettable name. And then he does what he feels he needs to do to position Gypsy closer to him.

As luck would have it, despite himself, he and his wife raised an incredible oldest girl and she knew how to take care of things. And away we go!!

I say that last part only from reading other reviews. I haven't gotten that far, nor will I. I can't waste more time on this project. Did want to write a review to give you a chance to hear from yet one more reviewer who says: This is awful. Save yourself!! BUT! If you don't believe us - give it a go. You might be one of the people who actually like it! Then you can write a review saying how wrong we are!

Bad in a good way

This Lifetime movie is soo cheesy and bad in a good way. It has Tom Everett Scott from That Thing You Do and Charisma Capenter from Buffy. My millennial heart loves that.

Very good movie
suzieisqzie26 April 2022
I'm not too sure why people are putting this movie down because this movie is nothing but great. I am a person who doesn't really get interested in movies too much to the point where I sit still And can't move, but this movie the good father was excellent. Not only did it show a daughters internal love for her mom to speak for the dead but she also never gave up and it showed a sister's love thats so unbelievable to her others sisters that she put her life on hold to get make sure she got her sisters all together and took them away from the father who should not even have them based on his actions . It was a very realistic movie and I thought it was great. I have a celebrity daughter that lives in Los Angeles and she agrees that this movie is phenomenon and the daughter that played tje major role in this this movie did a phenomenal job in acting . The movie was very well written and produced . It touched me in many ways . I even cried .

Too Charming
timmyb_848 March 2022
I had binders of evidence for why this movie was terrible, but just as I was about to write it in this review, I realized that it was actually a very charming movie. It was as charming as Martin MacNeill! I am easily charmed by bad movies. 10 out of 10!
